Change Of Air Quality Knowledge, Perceptions, Attitudes, And Practices During And Post-Wildfires In The United States, Alessandro Del Ponte, Lina Ang, Lianjun Li, Noah Lim, Wilson Tam Wai San, Wei Jie Seow
Political Science Faculty Articles and Research
Amid worsening climate change, the recurrent wildfires have substantially worsened air quality in the Western United States (U.S.). Understanding the knowledge, attitudes, perception, and practices (KAPP) over time in response to natural disasters such as wildfires is crucial for public health interventions and disaster preparedness. This is the first study to investigate the change in air quality KAPP over time in response to natural disasters. Previous studies have only assessed KAPP at a fixed time point. Using a two-wave panel survey (during and post-wildfires), we assessed the association between KAPP and respiratory health indicators as well as the changes over …
A Constructivist Grounded Theory Of Spiritual Competencies Development In Counseling Supervision, Emmanuel Javert Nnadozie
A Constructivist Grounded Theory Of Spiritual Competencies Development In Counseling Supervision, Emmanuel Javert Nnadozie
Dissertations
Developing religious and spiritual competencies is paramount in the training of counselors to become effective in addressing clients’ religious and spiritual issues in counseling. Clinical supervision in practicum and internship courses is key to the development of these competencies, but questions as to how best they might be infused in counselor training remained. The purpose of the study was to create an explanatory theory of the process of the development of religious and spiritual competencies in clinical supervision. Utilizing grounded theory, experts in the field of supervision and spirituality were interviewed. The ways paradigm was used as a sensitizing concept …
A Discursive Approach To Analyzing The Social Construction Of Exercise During Pregnancy, Savanna Kerstiens
A Discursive Approach To Analyzing The Social Construction Of Exercise During Pregnancy, Savanna Kerstiens
The Qualitative Report
While research has demonstrated that exercise is healthy for pregnant women (Ramirez-Velez et al., 2017), many pregnant women do not meet medical recommendations and hesitate to engage in exercise. This may be related to the dominant discourses circulating in society and popular media. For this study, I selected a sample of top-selling pregnancy books to explore the attitudes, beliefs, and ideas circulating in these texts surrounding exercise during pregnancy. I conducted a discourse analysis to deconstruct the meaning of the language used and the advice given. Throughout the analysis, a postmodern feminist epistemology is employed to consider the implications …

Aims: To gain a deeper understanding of nurses and midwives' experiences following involvement in a critical incident in a non-critical care area and to explore how they have 'moved-on' from the event.
Design: An interpretive descriptive design guided inductive inquiry to interpret the meaning of moving-on.
Methods: Purposive sampling recruited 10 nurses and midwives. Data collection comprised semi-structured interviews, memos and field notes. Data were concurrently collected and analysed during 2016–2017 with NVivo 11. The thematic analysis enabled a coherent analytical framework evolving emerging themes and transformation of the data into credible interpretive description findings, adhering to the COREQ reporting …
The Nested Embryonic Dorsal Domains Of Bmp-Target Genes Are Not Scaled To Size During The Evolution Of Drosophila Species, Juan Sebastian Chahda, Priscilla Ambrosi, Claudia M. Mizutani
The Nested Embryonic Dorsal Domains Of Bmp-Target Genes Are Not Scaled To Size During The Evolution Of Drosophila Species, Juan Sebastian Chahda, Priscilla Ambrosi, Claudia M. Mizutani
Faculty Scholarship
Egg size is a fast-evolving trait among Drosophilids expected to change the spatial distribution of morphogens that pattern the embryonic axes. Here we asked whether the patterning of the dorsal region of the embryo by the Decapentaplegic/Bone Morphogenetic Protein-4 (DPP/BMP-4) gradient is scaled among Drosophila species with different egg sizes. This region specifies the extra-embryonic tissue amnioserosa and the ectoderm. We find that the entire dorsal region scales with embryo size, but the gene expression patterns regulated by DPP are not proportional, suggesting that the DPP gradient is differentially scaled during evolution. To further test whether the DPP gradient can …

The Forgotten Activists Of Georgia: The Black Women Of Savannah, Emily Zanieski
The Forgotten Activists Of Georgia: The Black Women Of Savannah, Emily Zanieski
Honors College Theses
Historians of the Civil Rights Movement in Georgia have primarily focused on how the national movement unfolded in the city of Atlanta. More recent scholarship has highlighted the role Martin Luther King Jr. played in Albany; however, many of these analyses focus on figures within the larger movement rather than focusing on local, grassroots organizers. Additionally, their primary focus tends to be on the role of Black men, leaving behind the voices of Black women who led alongside them. Through a Long Civil Rights Movement (LCRM) approach, I argue that Black women in Savannah, Georgia played an instrumental role in …
The Foreign-Born And The American Dream: An Analysis Of Trends In And Determinants Of Immigrant Homeownership, Jared Schneider
The Foreign-Born And The American Dream: An Analysis Of Trends In And Determinants Of Immigrant Homeownership, Jared Schneider
Honors Projects
For many Americans, owning a home is an important step in their life journey and constitutes a meaningful component of a person’s achievement of the “American Dream.” This paper analyzes the extent and possibility of homeownership for foreign-born residents of the United States. This paper utilizes Integrated Public Microdata Series (IPUMS) American Community Survey (ACS) data to analyze trends in immigrant homeownership and evaluate the factors that influence homeownership rates among immigrants. To get a view as to what changes have been occurring over time, this paper looks at data from two separate years: 2006 and 2019. I find a …

Economic Feasibility Analysis Of Variable-Speed Pumps By Simulating 15 Multiple Water Distribution Systems, Conrad B. Truettner, Brian D. Barkdoll
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
The UN Sustainability Goals address measures to reduce environmental pollution. Water distribution systems (WDSs) use electric energy, which pollutes the atmosphere through, at least partly, the burning of coal. This study simulates, through modeling, variable-speed pumps (VSPs) on 15 different real WDSs on the network solver EPANET and analyzes the payback period. An algorithm is introduced here to select the optimal pump speed pattern to save the most energy while satisfying the constrain of sufficient pressure at all times and all locations. It was found that five of the 15 systems operated unsuccessfully using a VSP, due to the VSP …

Motherhood And Me (Mom-Me): The Development Of An Acceptance-Based Group For Women With Postpartum Mood And Anxiety Symptoms, Victoria A Grunberg, Pamela A Geller, Kelley Durham, Alexa Bonacquisti, Jennifer L Barkin
PCOM Scholarly Works
Untreated postpartum mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) place women and their families at risk for negative biopsychosocial sequelae. Innovative and tailored treatments are needed to address potential disruptions in maternal functioning. Third-wave cognitive-behavioral approaches, including acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), hold promise for optimizing functioning given the focus on values-based living, rather than symptom reduction.
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to describe the development of an innovative psychotherapy group for women with symptoms of PMADs.
Methods: This seven-session group, Motherhood and Me (Mom-Me), includes selected skills training from ACT, DBT, and Emotion-Centered …

Heart and Vascular Articles
Mycotic aneurysm of the aorta is a rare disease with a high mortality rate due to its likelihood of aneurysmal rupture. This syndrome is predominantly seen in patients over age 65 with the most common presenting symptoms being fever and back pain. Our case illustrates a mycotic aneurysm of the aorta presenting in an elderly female with vague abdominal pain, flank pain, and generalized weakness. We review the investigative approach, diagnostic modalities, and treatment options in patient management. This case emphasizes the need for a high index of suspicion of mycotic aneurysms of the aorta in critically ill elderly patients …

Genetic susceptibility for xerostomia, a common sequela of radiotherapy and chemoradiotherapy for head and neck cancer, is unknown. Therefore, to identify genetic variants associated with moderate to severe xerostomia, we conducted a GWAS of 359 long-term oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) survivors using 579,956 autosomal SNPs. Patient-reported cancer treatment-related xerostomia was assessed using the MD Anderson Symptom Inventory. Patient response was dichotomized as moderate to severe or none to mild symptoms. In our study, 39.2% of OPC survivors reported moderate to severe xerostomia. Our GWAS identified eight SNPs suggestively associated with higher risk of moderate to severe xerostomia in six genomic regions …

System Dynamics Modeling To Understand The Impact Of Covid-19 On Indian Economy, Anuja Shukla, Neha Tomer, Preeti Singh
Management Dynamics
COVID-19 has led to a severe health crisis. This sudden and wide impact of corona virus has brought the global economy to its knees. The virus has spread across the world through the chain of transmission. In India, the first case of COVID-19 was reported in the month of February 2020 and has spread drastically within past four months. As a preventive measure, the government announced complete lockdown in the month of March 2020 to stop this pandemic situation in India (Suri, April 30, 2020). This invisible virus has compelled many business organizations to shutdown their respective activities and to …

Covid 19 pandemic presented humanity with unprecedented challenges which put millions of livelihoods at risk. The economic and social disruptions impacted the lives of millions of people across the country . Like most companies, the surge of unexpected cases (and orders) initially caught Flipkart off guard. Nationwide lockdowns caused orders per day to go down to zero in some regions, only to see an unforeseen surge come in the next few months. While business was on a rollercoaster , there was also the challenge of running a huge organization remotely - thousands of employees including the on ground delivery personnels.

Management Dynamics
In August 2021, nearly 200 million people globally were believed to have had Covid-19 since the first case was reported in China in late 2019. The reported global death toll topped 4.26 million even as the World Health Organisation (WHO) expressed grave concern over the coronavirus, its mutations and the ever growing list of symptoms. The Covid-19 pandemic has rightly been regarded as the worst disaster befalling the global social and economic landscape in the last almost 100 years. Whilst previous natural or manmade disasters viz. earthquakes, floods, epidemics and World War I/II were largely confined to a continent or …
