Vaccine Hesitancy And Moral Persuasion, Max Vitro Apr 2022

Vaccine Hesitancy And Moral Persuasion, Max Vitro

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

It’s clear that overt, science-based messaging is not enough to persuade everyone to get the Covid-19 vaccine, no matter how encouraging the data. Previous research on vaccine-hesitant attitudes suggests their beliefs are more deeply rooted in moral values making them much more difficult to change. One promising approach to attitude change is moral reframing, or reframing messaging around the core basis of a person’s attitude or beliefs. This study tests that approach among Loyola Chicago undergraduate students. The results suggest beliefs around the Covid-19 vaccines have become moralized, yet they are amenable to using this communication technique.

Secession Sanctified: Bishop Francis Huger Rutledge And The Coming Of The Civil War In Florida, Lee L. Willis, Iii

Florida Historical Quarterly

Standing before the congregation of Tallahassee's St. John's Episcopal Church in May 1865, Bishop Francis Huger Rutledge personified the collapse of the Confederacy. Visibly weak "with trembling hands and unsteady voice," the prelate opened the Eucharist with prayer. Temporarily forgetting orders handed down from the Union forces occupying Florida's capital, Rutledge included a blessing for the President of the Confederate States of America in his benediction. Realizing his error, he bowed his head and repeated the last lines of his invocation, this time uttering "United States of America" instead. Having been at the forefront of Florida's secession movement four years …

Historic Notes And Documents: "Everything Is Hubbub Here": Lt. James Willoughby Anderson's Second Seminole War, 1837-1842, James M. Denham

Florida Historical Quarterly

As the Second Seminole War drew to a close in the spring of 1842, Lieutenant James Willoughby Anderson prepared to leave territorial Florida for a post in the Old Northwest. Pondering his experiences and life changes since entering the territory in 1837, Anderson would have looked back on many significant accomplishments. He had helped produce an important topographical map, accumulated distinguished service commendations, and made important professional relationships certain to advance his military career.1 But most of all, Anderson would have thought of the important personal relationships forged during his four years of service in Florida: his courtship and marriage …

Violence, Racial Etiquette, And African American Working-Class Infrapolitics In Jacksonville During World War I, Robert Cassanello

Florida Historical Quarterly

Before the 1980s, many historians thought that working-class African Americans were victims of racism and consequently played passive roles in history. With the emergence of the new social history, scholars of African American and urban history reexamined previous notions of black culture. They came forward with sources and interpretations suggesting that working-class blacks played a major role in shaping race relations in urban America.

Historic Notes And Documents: The Mix Diaries, Gayle Penner

Florida Historical Quarterly

On the evening of March 22, 1836, Capt. Mervine P. Mix, U.S.N., brought the USS Concord to anchor in Key West harbor. The island was a good place to repair several damaged sails and to rest after the long voyage from the Portsmouth Navy Yard in New Hampshire. The Concord, 127 feet long with a 17-foot draft and mounting 18 guns, was one of the navy's finest sloops-of-war. Under its first commander, Matthew C. Perry, the Concord traveled some 2,800 miles, visiting ports in Russia, France, Spain, Italy, and the Greek Islands. With Mix in command, the ship sailed from …

Historic Notes And Documents: Life In Miami And The Keys: Two Reports And Map From The Monaco-Alana Mission, 1743, R. Wayne Childers

Florida Historical Quarterly

In 1743, some forty-five years after the Franciscans abandoned their disastrous mission to the Calusa, Jesuit Fathers Joseph Maria Monaco and Francisco Xavier Alaiia proposed Christianizing the Indians of the South Florida Keys.1 The natives had previously indicated that they wanted instruction, but when the priests arrived, the Indians rejected educational efforts and asked instead for supplies and whiskey. Despite the less than warm reception given the two priests, a fort was built for their protection. Alana returned to Havana to report on the expedition, leaving Monaco behind with twelve soldiers. The Governor of Cuba ordered their immediate return, however, …

Fernandina Filibuster Fiasco: Birth Of The 1895 Cuban War Of Independence, Antonio Rafael De La Cova

Florida Historical Quarterly

In early January 1895, Cuban exile leader Jose Marti completed preparations in the United States and the Caribbean to ignite a revolt against Spanish colonial despotism in his homeland. Three vessels were chartered in New York and Boston to retrieve hundreds of weapons from a warehouse in Fernandina Beach, Florida, and board contingents of Cuban revolutionaries in Key West, the Dominican Republic, and Costa Rica to disembark on the island in conjunction with nationwide internal uprisings. During the previous forty-five years, Cuban patriots had been launching dozens of similar military filibuster expeditions from the United States, which the federal government …

Florida In American Popular Magazines 1870-1970, Tommy R. Thompson

Florida Historical Quarterly

One might say that in the nineteenth century Americans discovered Florida. Fascinated with the abundant sunshine and the beauty of its flora and fauna, a steady progression of visitors tantalized the rest of the country with an "Edenic" image of the peninsula. Just one of the many travelers who journeyed to Florida, Harriet Beecher Stowe set the tone in the early 1870s with a description that made it practically irresistible to Americans of means: "The great charm, after all, of this life, is its outdoorness. To be able to spend your winter days out of doors, even though some days …

Of Vultures, Souls, And Galen: Theology And Medical Cures In Early Medieval Europe, Christina Cannon Apr 2022

Of Vultures, Souls, And Galen: Theology And Medical Cures In Early Medieval Europe, Christina Cannon

Campus Research Month

Examining how medical cures in early medieval Europe reflect the theology of the time is one that involves tracing and defining the emergence of a more defined field of "medicine," beginning with Galen. The work briefly examines prevailing contemporary views of the relation of body to soul, as well as what medical cures looked like. Understanding how 'pagan' thought was conceptualized and related to 'Christian' thought during the period is also helpful, and the work seeks to broadly consider these themes while noting particular examples that answer the question of how theology and medicine were related in medieval Europe.

Reconstructing The Confederate Widow: An Analysis Of The Wives Of Fallen Confederate Soldiers And Their Response To Reconstruction And The Post War Era, Christian Beasley

Campus Research Month

This study provides an analysis of how the post-civil war era and Reconstruction affected the financial, social, and political lives of the wives of fallen Confederate soldiers. Because men were the head of families and traditional breadwinners in the South, the widows of the 258,000 fallen Confederate soldiers had to reintegrate themselves into society and support their families without the assistance and comfort of a husband. Although this integration may seem straightforward, these widows struggled to overcome the economic and social difficulties laid before them, including the patriarchal traditions, mourning expectations, severe droughts, and unemployment that plagued these women. This …
