Michigan Tech Research Data

Current vaccine formulations heavily rely on cold chains to avoid
degradation during transportation and storage. Vaccines typically degrade
when exposure to temperature outside of 2 – 8°C range, leading to waste and
logistical challenges, particularly in rural areas. This study investigates
the ability of poly(lysine)- and poly(glutamate)-based peptide coacervates
to improve the thermal stability of porcine parvovirus (PPV), a model
non-enveloped viral vaccine. We hypothesized that both the length and
specific amino acid sequence of the peptides forming the coacervates would
influence the stability of PPV. Long polypeptides (400–800 mers) provided
significant protection, slowing PPV inactivation at 60°C for up …

Social Education In Disruption – From Pressure To Proactive Solutions, Aoife Prendergast Mar 2026

Social Education In Disruption – From Pressure To Proactive Solutions, Aoife Prendergast

Journal of Social Care

In November 2025, FESET members gathered at the European Parliament in Strasbourg for our seminar, “Under Pressure – Social Education in Disruption.” The choice of venue was a deliberate statement of intent. By anchoring our discussions within the heart of European democracy, we underscored a fundamental truth: social education is not merely a domestic or peripheral concern. It is a vital pillar of social cohesion and the democratic fabric of the European project.

As President of FESET, it is an honour to introduce this collection of insights and research to the readers of the Journal of Social Care, reflecting …

How To Train Social Intervention Professionals In A Polarised World?, Bruno Michon

Journal of Social Care

This article examines the challenges of training social intervention professionals in an increasingly polarised society. Drawing on theoretical perspectives on political and affective polarisation, it explores how contemporary social divisions shape social work practice. The analysis includes findings from a five-year qualitative study on radicalisation prevention in France, highlighting tensions between security imperatives and the ethical foundations of social work. These tensions often generate mistrust and professional dilemmas for practitioners. The article argues that social work education must address polarisation directly. It proposes three key responses: reaffirming human rights as the ethical foundation of the profession, adopting professional stances that …

The Evolving Landscape Of Social Education In The Uk: The Legacy Of Neoliberalism Affecting Uk Children And Those Who Support Them, And The Considerable Value Of Its Potential Counterbalance — Social Pedagogy, Robyn Kemp Mar 2026

The Evolving Landscape Of Social Education In The Uk: The Legacy Of Neoliberalism Affecting Uk Children And Those Who Support Them, And The Considerable Value Of Its Potential Counterbalance — Social Pedagogy, Robyn Kemp

Journal of Social Care

This paper examines the erosion of concern for the social and relational in the United Kingdom through four decades of neoliberal policy, and argues for social pedagogy as a principled and urgently needed counterbalance. Drawing on a career spanning public, charitable, and academic practice primarily with children in and on the edges of care, it traces how the introduction of neoliberalism under Thatcher in the 1980s — and its institutionalisation through New Public Management in the 1990s — systematically dismantled the relational, ethical, and communal foundations of work with children. The consequences are documented in stark statistical terms: rising school …

Is Authentic Assessment Our Only Hope? Exploring The Potential Of The Integrative Framework For Social Care To Address Challenges Posed By Generative Ai., Jennifer Mcgarr, Dr. Margaret Fingleton

Journal of Social Care

Social Care education in Ireland is experiencing rapid change, driven by technological advancements and the growing influence of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI). While these developments create new learning opportunities, they also raise concerns about academic integrity and the erosion of critical thinking. Educators must simultaneously ensure graduates meet CORU’s regulatory standards and can adapt to the evolving scope of social care practice. CORU is Ireland’s multi-professional state regulatory of health and social care professions. Traditional assessment methods are increasingly questioned for their ability to foster professional competence, prompting interest in authentic assessment approaches that emphasise real-world application and the development …

Dataset For Geospatial Interpolation Of Soil Profile Depth In The Magic Valley, Idaho, Usa: Use Of Publicly Available Well Report Data, Akira Byrne, David P. Huber, Dylan Thompson, Josh Enterkine, Jennifer Pierce

Geosciences Research Data

Soil depth is critical to ecosystem productivity, acting as a reservoir for water, nutrients, and carbon. Deeper soils enhance water holding capacity to withstand droughts in native and agricultural systems, and provide more volume for long-term carbon sequestration, directly influencing soil health and climate regulation. This dataset scraped public well log (AKA well driller’s report) data from the Idaho Department of Water Resources (IDWR) to create a soil depth map across the Magic Valley in south-central Idaho, USA. Soils in this region are predominantly loess-derived silt-loams, underlain by undulating beds of basalt on top of deep rhyolite. Starting in the …

Youth Care Under Pressure: Addressing Complex Cases Of Youth Homelessness Through Cross‑Sectoral Collaboration And Reflective Practice., Gwendy Moentjens Mar 2026

Youth Care Under Pressure: Addressing Complex Cases Of Youth Homelessness Through Cross‑Sectoral Collaboration And Reflective Practice., Gwendy Moentjens

Journal of Social Care

Young adults (18–25 years) constitute about a quarter of the homeless population in Flanders and often experience difficulties transitioning to adulthood. Research conducted at KU Leuven shows elevated rates of mental health issues (23%), intellectual disabilities (14%), and addiction-related challenges (17.7%) within this demographic, with many individuals having a history in youth care services (Hermans & Italiano, 2021).

Due to the combination of these complex factors, these young adults frequently fall between the cracks of existing service provision. Previous literature argues that addressing youth homelessness effectively requires a specialised, integrated and intensive approach (Hermans & Italiano, 2021).

Drawing on experiences …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Background: Wearable devices offer an opportunity to objectively monitor and capture sleep and activity in psychiatric inpatient settings, where traditional approaches often rely on subjective reporting or staff observation, both of which have inherent flaws. Technologies such as Fitbit, Garmin, Oura Ring, GENEActiv, Empatica, and WHOOP (among others) have been used to passively collect physiological data that may inform care planning and clinical decision-making. Despite growing interest, the extent to which these wearables are feasible, acceptable, and useful in inpatient mental health settings remains unclear. Synthesizing this evidence is essential to inform their potential integration into psychiatric care.

Objective: This …

The ‘Culture Box’: A Promising Tool For Creating An Inclusive Space In Nursing, Kechi Iheduru-Anderson Mar 2026

The ‘Culture Box’: A Promising Tool For Creating An Inclusive Space In Nursing, Kechi Iheduru-Anderson

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Introduction/Background: The CDC (2021) declared racism a serious threat to the Public's health. The Future of Nursing 2020-2030 called on nurses to strengthen nursing education curricula to prepare nurses to address health equity issues and social determinants of health in meaningful ways (National Academy of Medicine, 2021). To promote health equity and address the social determinants of health, nursing must confront racism and social identity meaningfully. However, many educators are wary of discussing cultural issues; others must learn how to address them or begin the conversation (Iheduru-Anderson & Wahi, 2022). Preparing nurses to address social determinants of health and health …

Long-Term Variability Of Air Quality And Greenhouse Gas Emissions From Rice Crop Burning In Punjab During 2012–2020, Harsimranjit Kaur Romana, Dericks Praise Shukla, Ramesh P. Singh

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Punjab, India's primary rice and wheat production hub, has witnessed rapid expansion of paddy cultivation over the past two decades, driven by minimum support price incentives, changes in government policies, alignment of sowing with the monsoon season and the adoption of high-yielding varieties. This transition has intensified groundwater extraction and shortened the fallow period between rabi and kharif crop seasons, reducing the window between rice harvesting and wheat sowing, leading to widespread open-field burning of rice residue and recurrent post-monsoon air-quality deterioration across the Indo-Gangetic Plain. Despite numerous short-term or single-pollutant assessments, a spatially resolved, multi-pollutant and multi-decadal evaluation linking …
