Journal of Innovation and Teacher Professionalism
This study aims to improve seventh-grade junior high school students’ scientific literacy through the use of the science-poly game on the topic of motion. The learning process was implemented using the lesson study approach, which consists of three stages: plan, do, and see. In the planning stage, teachers collaboratively designed learning activities and literacy-based questions integrated into the science-poly game. During the implementation stage, students participated in the game while engaging with scientific problems that required them to analyze questions, identify key scientific terms, and formulate conclusions. In the reflection stage, teachers discussed the learning outcomes and evaluated the effectiveness …

On Edible Food Recovery: Integration Of Local Agriculture Into Santa Clara County Food Recovery Networks, Anna Keenan, Caitlin Delamora, Jenna Martinez, Vansh Malik
Environmental Studies and Sciences Senior Capstone
Santa Clara County (SCC) produces over 50 million pounds of surplus food, yet 31% percent of county residents are reported to be at risk of food insecurity, lacking reliable access to proper, affordable nutrition. Additionally, SCC produces approximately 40,000 tons of food waste annually. Food waste decomposes in landfills, producing greenhouse gas emissions, posing a pressing public health and environmental issue. California’s food waste law (SB 1383) addresses this challenge. We aimed to provide actionable insights that enable local farmers to donate more surplus produce, identifying ways to divert food loss from local farms to recovered food hubs, turning potential …

BACKGROUND: CLN3 disease, also called Juvenile Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis (JNCL), or Batten disease, is an ultra‑rare, neurodegenerative lysosomal storage disorder generally affecting individuals during the first decade of life. There can be a delay in diagnosis or misdiagnosis due to a lack of awareness, and when the most common presenting symptom of visual loss is attributed to more common conditions affecting vision. METHODS: We used a previously published Expert Mapping Tool (EMT) to identify multidisciplinary professionals with diagnostic or clinical management expertise, as well as patient advocates with experience of CLN3 disease. A systematic literature review of published evidence using …

BACKGROUND: Integrated behavioral health (IBH) is an evidence-based approach to addressing mental health in primary care settings. It typically involves augmenting a primary care team with a behavioral health professional (e.g., psychologist, licensed clinical social worker) who sees patients for brief, focused concerns; can function as a bridge to specialty care; and provides medical providers with support and education about patient behavioral health concerns. IBH has slowly begun to disseminate across the United States, but practices encounter significant implementation barriers. How IBH is implemented has not been systematically studied outside of trials, yet this study could provide a rich foundation …

Human muscle biopsies are often required to study or diagnose diseases. However, traditional approaches are challenging due to limited sample size, quality, or participant discomfort. Fine-gauge needle biopsies (≥ 14-gauge), present an alternative but may yield insufficient tissue for comprehensive analysis. Ultrasound guidance, coupled with vacuum-assisted, single needle-insertion multiple sampling addresses these challenges. In 19 healthy participants (mean age: 30.1 ± 10 years, 42% male), 2-3 samples were collected from a single needle insertion into the vastus lateralis (VL) and tibialis anterior (TA). Summed VL and TA sample masses averaged 148 ± 38 mg and 166 ± 64 mg, with …

A Multi-State Look Into Early Intervention Speech-Language Pathologists’ Confidence Identifying And Diagnosing Autism, Allison Gladfelter, Adelaide Parr, Anna Cannone, Sarah O'Connor
CISLL Publications
Purpose: Although autism can be reliably diagnosed by 18 months of age, long wait times and limited access to qualified providers prevent families from obtaining timely diagnostic services. Trained speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are qualified to diagnose autism, ideally as part of a multidisciplinary team. SLPs working on early intervention (EI) teams are well-situated to help close this diagnostic wait time gap. The purpose of this survey study was to explore EI SLPs’ experiences serving autistic children, confidence in identifying and diagnosing autism, and their perceptions of barriers or facilitators to diagnostic confidence and wait times.
Method: 287 EI SLPs from …

Press Protection As Anticorruption, Zachary Reger
Press Protection As Anticorruption, Zachary Reger
Texas A&M Law Review
As the partisan press of the Founding Era gave way to the commercial press of the nineteenth century, then to the professional press of the twentieth century, American journalism assumed an increasingly skeptical attitude toward governmental power. Today, the investigatory and information-spreading functions of the “fourth branch” are more important than ever to checking public corruption in a vast administrative state. At the same time, the press faces financial crisis, threatening the anticorruption interest.
This Essay evaluates three mechanisms for shoring up the corruption-fighting role of American journalism: (1) constitutional speech protections for the corporate form taken by most modern …

Paternal Alienation, Paternal Strain, Generativity, Adjustment, And Resilience (P-Apgar): A Conceptual Framework For Fathers’ Perinatal Psychosocial Adjustment, Rachael Elizabeth Schmitz
Nursing and Health Sciences
Paternal perinatal depression is underrecognized, and existing tools often fail to capture male-specific symptomatic expressions. Fathers experience significant psychosocial changes during the transitional period, yet clinical assessment of paternal mental health remains largely absent from routine clinical practice. This paper introduces a multi-dimensional tool called the P-APGAR. The theory-informed conceptual tool is meant to guide the assessment of fathers’ perinatal adjustment, operationalizing core elements of role-based, relational, and emotional adaptation. The model adapts the logic of the traditional newborn APGAR score to a father-centered context based on Paternal Identity, Alienation, Paternal Strain, Generativity, Adjustment, and Resilience. A theoretical synthesis approach …

Contributions to Books
Published as Chapter 11 in Research Handbook on Environmental Regulation, David Williamson, Gary Lynch-Wood & Agne Prochorskaite, eds.
Rapid global trade expansion beginning in the 1990s spawned a parallel expansion in non-state (‘private’) environmental regulatory (PER) programs. They issue regulatory standards, monitor and judge performance, sanction poor performance, and sometimes regulate state activities. PER programs constitute extensive and complex transnational governance agglomerations encompassing environmental certification, corporate social responsibility, and environment-society-governance programs, typically intertwined with governmental and intergovernmental regulatory programs.
Using forestry and climate change examples, this article analyzes key features of PER programs, how they may be growing empirically more …

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are key reservoirs of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), with municipal sludge containing high bacterial densities and diverse ARGs that may spread through land application. Hydrothermal treatment (HT) is a process that inactivates pathogens and stabilizes biomass, but its performance at moderate temperatures is less understood. We evaluated HT (100°C–250°C; 2–24 h) for degrading bacterial DNA and ARGs in dewatered municipal sludge. DNA was quantified by fluorometry, bacterial presence confirmed by 16S rRNA gene PCR, and ARGs profiled by qPCR targeting 84 clinically and environmentally relevant genes. HT up to 250°C produced modest carbon densification, high solids …

The Role Of Personality In Collegiate Athletes’ Indicators Of Performance And Injury Experiences – A Mixed Methods Study, Allison Traub
The Role Of Personality In Collegiate Athletes’ Indicators Of Performance And Injury Experiences – A Mixed Methods Study, Allison Traub
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This mixed methods study explores the impact of collegiate athletes' indicators of personality traits as attributed to athletic performance, injury experiences, and sport identity.
