The Implications Of The Midyear Departure Of Residence Directors In Housing And Residential Life, Chelsea Titus
The Implications Of The Midyear Departure Of Residence Directors In Housing And Residential Life, Chelsea Titus
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
High attrition rates among entry-level student affairs professionals have been documented for decades, yet little research has examined the implications of midyear departures within housing and residential life. Residence directors serve as live-in professionals responsible for crisis response, student conduct, staff supervision, and community development. When a midyear departure occurs, the disruption extends beyond the vacancy and affects supervisors, colleagues, and residential communities. The problem addressed in this study was the organizational and supervisory impact of midyear residence director departures. The purpose of this qualitative narrative inquiry was to examine the factors contributing to midyear departures and to explore how …

Reducing Humpty Dumpty Syndrome In Pediatric Inpatients, Jeanene Burns
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Doctor of Nursing Practice project examined pediatric inpatient falls. The healthcare agency involved in the project identified concerns regarding pediatric inpatient falls. Data were collected on pediatric inpatient falls that occurred on two nursing units at this agency based on the Generalized Risk Assessment for Pediatric Inpatient Falls and the Humpty Dumpty Falls Prevention Scale. Results from the project indicated marginal statistical significance, with approximately a 60% reduction in falls after the implementation of the Humpty Dumpty Falls Prevention Scale. A recommendation for future research is a comparison of the two pediatric fall risk assessment tools after the Humpty …

Bridging The Divide: Exploring Stigma And Enhancing Belonging For Online Faculty In Higher Education, Stephanie L. Wanamaker
Bridging The Divide: Exploring Stigma And Enhancing Belonging For Online Faculty In Higher Education, Stephanie L. Wanamaker
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Online faculty in higher education experience stigma and negative perceptions regarding online education in academia. Despite the rapid growth and success of online education, negative perceptions and stigma have not evolved at the same pace as the success of online institutions. Many online faculty members frequently experience skepticism, criticism, and marginalization from their residential counterparts within their academic communities. As a result of these experiences, online faculty are experiencing a reduced level of belonging, contributing to increased levels of burnout, poor satisfaction, and struggles with professional identity. Despite these experiences, little is known about the problem or how online faculty …

Transcription factor EB (TFEB) is a master regulator of lysosomal biogenesis and cellular clearance pathways. TFEB activity is tightly controlled by multiple post-translational mechanisms, but the exact molecular mechanism controlling its stability has remained elusive. Here, we identify the IκB kinase (IKK) complex as a key regulator of TFEB protein stability through a phosphorylation-ubiquitination cascade. A high-content kinase inhibitor screen reveals that IKK inhibition increases TFEB protein levels, and genetic ablation of IKK components increases TFEB stability, upregulates lysosomal genes, and enhances lysosomal biogenesis and degradative capacity. Mechanistically, we show that IKK phosphorylates TFEB on a cluster of serine residues …

Oral contraceptives (OCs) are extensively utilized and generally considered safe (reference); nonetheless, infrequent hepatobiliary complications such as cholestasis and hyperbilirubinemia have been documented, particularly among individuals with a genetic predisposition. We present a case involving a 19-year-old female who exhibited significant conjugated hyperbilirubinemia shortly after the commencement of OC therapy. Comprehensive investigations ruled out alternative causes, and the findings from liver biopsy, in conjunction with the clinical context, indicated an estrogen-induced cholestatic injury, likely revealing an underlying Dubin–Johnson syndrome. This case underscores the critical necessity of acknowledging hepatic adverse effects associated with estrogen as well as the influence of genetic …

Propaganda Ai: An Analysis Of Semantic Divergence In Large Language Models, Nay Myat Min, Long H. Pham, Yige Li, Jun Sun
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Large language models (LLMs) can exhibit concept-conditioned semantic divergence: common high-level cues (e.g., ideologies, public figures) elicit unusually uniform, stance-like responses that evade token-trigger audits. This behavior falls in a blind spot of current safety evaluations, yet carries major societal stakes, as such concept cues can steer content exposure at scale. We formalize this phenomenon and present RAVEN (Response Anomaly Vigilance), a black-box audit that flags cases where a model is simultaneously highly certain and atypical among peers by coupling semantic entropy over paraphrastic samples with cross-model disagreement. In a controlled LoRA fine-tuning study, we implant a concept-conditioned stance using …

Reasoning On Time-Series For Financial Technical Analysis, Kelvin J. L. Koa, Jan Chen, Yunshan Ma, Huanhuan Zheng, Tat-Seng Chua
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
While Large Language Models have been used to produce interpretable stock forecasts, they mainly focus on analyzing textual reports but not historical price data, also known as Technical Analysis. This task is challenging as it switches between domains: the stock price inputs and outputs lie in the time-series domain, while the reasoning step should be in natural language. In this work, we introduce Verbal Technical Analysis (VTA), a novel framework that combine verbal and latent reasoning to produce stock time-series forecasts that are both accurate and interpretable. To reason over time-series, we convert stock price data into textual annotations and …

Neighborhood-scale environmental factors, including disinvestment in infrastructure, may impact cardiometabolic disease risk. To our knowledge, no prior studies have investigated the association between neighborhood disinvestment and incident diabetes. We used a virtual street audit of Google Street View Imagery to generate a neighborhood disinvestment score for participants' residential addresses in the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL). An item response theory model was fit to indicators (litter, graffiti, under-maintained buildings, bars on windows, and abandoned buildings) to form a scale measuring a latent level of disinvestment. Ordinary kriging was used to estimate levels for each residential address within the …

Fungal diseases are an emerging public health threat, yet their epidemiology remains poorly understood due to limited surveillance. Electronic health record (EHR) datasets offer opportunities for studying fungal diseases, but their national representativeness is unclear. We compared inpatient encounters for aspergillosis and histoplasmosis between Oracle EHR Real World Data (OERWD) and the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project National Inpatient Sample (HCUP NIS), a nationally representative discharge-derived database. We analyzed inpatient encounters from both databases and applied calibration weights to OERWD to improve alignment with national benchmarks. Relative differences (RDs) in encounter counts were compared using Wald tests. Survey-weighted quasibinomial models …

Background: Preterm infants requiring prolonged hospitalization in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) are often exposed to early-life stress, which may contribute to long-term health consequences. Epigenetic markers, particularly DNA methylation (DNAm) of stress-related genes such as SLC6A4 and NR3C1, have been identified as potential biomarkers of early-life stress. Limited research has compared DNAm patterns between term and preterm infants or examined associations between NICU-related stress and DNAm in preterm populations. Objectives: This pilot study aimed to (1) compare DNAm patterns between preterm and term infants, (2) examine relationships between NICU-related stress and DNAm alterations in preterm infants, and …
Secondary Dual Language And Immersion Content Teachers And Their Instructional Materials, Curtis Larsen
Secondary Dual Language And Immersion Content Teachers And Their Instructional Materials, Curtis Larsen
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations
Secondary dual language and immersion (DLI) teachers who teach content courses, such as social studies or science, balance two central responsibilities: meeting content-area standards and supporting students’ language development (Cammarata & Tedick, 2012). Managing these responsibilities presents challenges when preparing and using instructional materials in languages other than English (Moate, 2014; Morton, 2013; Skinnari, 2020; Sun, 2017). While existing research shows that DLI teachers expend enormous energy seeking and preparing instructional materials for their content-area classes (Mathieu, 2022), little is known about the factors that guide this work or how well existing materials meet teachers’ needs. This dissertation sought to …
What Works In Martial Education: How The Experience Of Martial Educators Defines Living Muay Thai’S Place In An Evolving Martial Community, Justin Markus
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations
Martial education, particularly Muay Thai, rarely offers formal educator training, and what does exists is rarely backed by research. Educators frequently develop in isolation, within communities lacking evidence-based frameworks. Some practitioners may find their way to pedagogical knowledge, but most do not. Living Muay Thai (LMT) was founded in 2020 to address these gaps. This qualitative phenomenological study evaluated LMT’s impact on martial educators after its first five years (April 2020-July 2025) and identified 11 areas for future development. Seven Muay Thai educators participated in semi-structured interviews and a focus group. An emergent phenomenological analysis generated findings; a reflexive thematic …

OBJECTIVES: This study explored potential resilience factors that facilitate engagement in physical activity (PA) among adolescents with chronic musculoskeletal pain after completing intensive interdisciplinary pain treatment.
METHODS: Ten adolescents aged 13 to 17 years with a history of chronic musculoskeletal pain from a mid-western pediatric hospital in the United States participated in this qualitative study. Participants provided demographic information and completed semistructured virtual interviews. The interviews focused on their pain experiences, resilience, and engagement in PA. Transcripts were analyzed using primarily directed content analysis based on a pain resilience framework.
RESULTS: Participants highlighted several key resilience factors that influenced their …

This study seeks to understand cardiac medication use in a large cohort of males with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) followed prospectively with focus on current practices and adherence to consensus directed medical therapy (CDMT). DMD patients have been enrolled in the Advanced Cardiac Therapies Improving Outcomes Network (ACTION) Dystrophinopathy Registry since 2021. Cardiac medication use was analyzed at enrollment and most recent follow-up. CDMT was defined as concurrent use of angiotensin-converting-enzyme inhibitor (ACEi)/angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) /angiotensin receptor-neprilysin inhibitor (ARNI) plus beta-blocker (BB) plus mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist (MRA). Two hundred sixty-five males with DMD (median age 17.5 (IQR 14.5-21.5) …

BACKGROUND: Obesity in childhood is complex; structural equation modeling (SEM) offers an approach to ascertain complicated relationships between weight and proximal (health behaviors, child health) and distal (family/household, community) variables. The objective of the study was to use SEM to map the influence of different etiological clusters on obesity in childhood.
METHODS: Secondary analysis of baseline data from patients and parents enrolled in a multi-site study of pediatric weight management was conducted. The primary outcome was weight status (utilizing percentage above the 95th percentile BMI, %95BMI). SEM was used to evaluate the influences of variables proximal and distal to child …
