Synthetic Biology Design As A Paradigm Shift Toward Manufacturing Affordable Adeno-Associated Virus Gene Therapies, Logan Thrasher Collins, Selvarangan Ponnazhagan, David T Curiel

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Gene therapy has demonstrated enormous potential for changing how we combat disease. By directly engineering the genetic composition of cells, it provides a broad range of options for improving human health. Adeno-associated viruses (AAVs) represent a leading gene therapy vector and are expected to address a wide range of conditions in the coming decade. Three AAV therapies have already been approved by the FDA to treat Leber's congenital amaurosis, spinal muscular atrophy, and hemophilia B. Yet these therapies cost around $850,000, $2,100,000, and $3,500,000, respectively. Such prices limit the broad applicability of AAV gene therapy and make it inaccessible to …

The Necessity Of Global Standardization Guidelines For Space Travel, Josh Larson, Mallory K. Casebolt Jan 2023

The Necessity Of Global Standardization Guidelines For Space Travel, Josh Larson, Mallory K. Casebolt

National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)

This study explored the interest in global standardization guidelines for space travel. Due to the lack of accepted minimum international standards and commercialized space travel guidelines, there is a need to explore the feasibility of developing of an agency or clearinghouse for the standardization of certifications, requirements, and ethical standards for space travel between global governments and private entities. This study employed a two-round Delphi design to investigate the need to establish and prioritize such guidelines. The findings yielded from this study provide guidance on how an agency or clearinghouse is needed and could potentially aid in developing such guidelines. …

Lightweight Pairwise Key Distribution Scheme For Iots, Kanwalinderjit Kaur

Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice

Embedding a pairwise key distribution approach in IoT systems is challenging as IoT devices have limited resources, such as memory, processing power, and battery life. This paper presents a secure and lightweight approach that is applied to IoT devices that are divided into Voronoi clusters. This proposed algorithm comprises XOR and concatenation operations for interactive authentication between the server and the IoT devices. Predominantly, the authentication is carried out by the server. It is observed that the algorithm is resilient against man-in-the-middle attacks, forward secrecy, Denial of Service (DoS) attacks, and offers mutual authentication. It is also observed that the …

Cybersecurity Continuity Risks: Lessons Learned From The Covid-19 Pandemic, Tyler Fezzey, John H. Batchelor, Gerald F. Burch, Randall Reid

Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice

The scope and breadth of the COVID-19 pandemic were unprecedented. This is especially true for business continuity and the related area of cybersecurity. Historically, business continuity and cybersecurity are viewed and researched as separate fields. This paper synthesizes the two disciplines as one, thus pointing out the need to address both topics simultaneously. This study identifies blind spots experienced by businesses as they navigated through the difficult time of the pandemic by using data collected during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. One major shortcoming was that most continuity and cybersecurity plans focused on single-axis threats. The COVID-19 pandemic resulted …

Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice

Phishing is a common social engineering attack aimed to steal personal information. Universities attract phishing attacks because: 1) they store employees and students sensitive data, 2) they save confidential documents, 3) their infrastructures often lack security. In this paper, we showcase a phishing assessment at the University of Redacted aimed to identify the people, and the features of such people, that are more susceptible to phishing attacks. We delivered phishing emails to 1.508 subjects in three separate batches, collecting a clickrate equal to 30%, 11% and 13%, respectively. We considered several features (i.e., age, gender, role, working/studying field, email template) …

Dimensionality Assessment Of Fatigue In Collegiate Aviation Operations: A Structural Equation Modeling Approach, Daniel Kwasi Adjekum, Julius Keller, Flavio Antonio Mendonca

National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)

There have been recommendations for evidence-based studies into the safety risk posed by fatigue in the flight training environment from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Extant research suggests a paucity of studies on the dimensionality of fatigue in collegiate aviation when compared to scheduled service and military flight operations. As a unique population, collegiate aviation pilots have rigorous course schedules that require intensive studying. Many pilots in this population are active in campus student organization activities and often have part time jobs. These conditions may exacerbate fatigue risks. …

Why Should Airline Workers Be Trained To Respond To Fume Events?, Judith Tl Anderson Jan 2023

Why Should Airline Workers Be Trained To Respond To Fume Events?, Judith Tl Anderson

National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)

The potential for engine oil and hydraulic fluid fumes to contaminate the ventilation air supplied to the aircraft cabin and flight deck has been recognized since the 1950s as a function of the design and maintenance of the bleed air system. The presence of oil and hydraulic fluid in the bleed air matters because the fumes contain complex mixtures of chemicals, including toxic additives. Starting in the 1950s and continuing to this day, crewmembers around the world have documented ill health during and after breathing these fumes. Also, some crewmembers have reported impairment and even incapacitation inflight, resulting in investigations …

Mental Health In Pilots Ages 19-26: What Are The New Pilots Telling Us?, Jason T. Lorenzon, Diana Semilia

National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)

Mental Health is stigma that reaches all professional pilots. After spending a considerable amount of money, a pilot is always afraid of losing his/her medical certification. This leads many pilots to not be honest and forthcoming about his/her own health situation or if he/she is forthcoming with any medical deficiency, the regulatory framework at the Federal Aviation Administration may put a further burden on the pilot to provide additional medical documentation, or the FAA may even amend, revoke, or suspend a pilot's medical certificate.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations,14 CFR Parts 61 and 67 and internal protocols creates a …

Static And Dynamic Analysis Of A Bistable Frequency Up-Converter Piezoelectric Energy Harvester, Mohammad Atmeh, Alwathiqbellah Ibrahim, Abdallah Ramini

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Using energy harvesting to convert ambient vibrations efficiently to electrical energy has become a worthy concept in recent years. Nevertheless, the low frequencies of the ambient vibrations cannot be effectively converted to power using traditional harvesters. Therefore, a frequency up-conversion harvester is presented to convert the low-frequency vibrations to high-frequency vibrations utilizing magnetic coupling. The presented harvester consists of a low-frequency beam (LFB) and a high-frequency beam (HFB) with identical tip magnets facing each other at the same polarity. The HFB, fully covered by a piezoelectric strip, is utilized for voltage generation. The dynamic behavior of the system and the …

The Federalists Of The Internet? What Online Platforms Can Learn From Reddit’S Decentralized Content Moderation Scheme, Vincent Marrazzo Jan 2023

The Federalists Of The Internet? What Online Platforms Can Learn From Reddit’S Decentralized Content Moderation Scheme, Vincent Marrazzo

Nebraska Law Bulletin (Selected Issues)

As online platforms become the primary carriers of news and information in society, their content moderation policies will have increasing power over users’ daily lives. Centralized moderation is inappropriate and inefficient because it forces all online communities to adhere to the same (and often arbitrary) standards. Decentralized moderation, however, allows most moderation decisions to be made by users who are intimately aware of the contours of individual online communities. Such decisions are less likely to restrict content that is not violative of an online communities’ standards.

This concept of subsidiarity mirrors the arguments made in favor of federalism in which …
