College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research
Generally, there are scant data about the constituents and eventually the biological activity of essential oils (EOs) from aromatic plants that grow naturally in Sudan. The present study aimed to determine the chemical composition, and antioxidant and enzyme inhibitory activities of EO extracted from the fruit of Chamaecyparis obtusa (Siebold and Zucc.) Endl. (family Cupressaceae), root of Chrysopogon nigritanus (Benth.) Veldkampis (family Poaceae) and aerial part of Lavandula coronopifolia Poir (family Lamiaceae). The fruit of C. obtusa contained only monoterpenes, mainly hydrogenated ones, with α-pinene (69.07%) as the major component. Oxygenated sesquiterpenes comprised the highest content of the C. nigritanus …

The Association Between Civic Engagement Via Participatory Art And Adolescents’ Self-Esteem And Self-Efficacy, Michaela Ann Hayes
The Association Between Civic Engagement Via Participatory Art And Adolescents’ Self-Esteem And Self-Efficacy, Michaela Ann Hayes
Theses and Dissertations
Civic engagement refers to actions taken by individuals to address issues of public concern, which can come in many forms including engagement in art. Participation in these activities can have positive impacts on the individual, including improved mental and physical health, as well as on the community through increased appreciation for differences and acquisition of values such as tolerance. The Bioecological Model suggests that an individual's participation in civic activities is influenced by the various levels of their environment. These experiences may be particularly impactful for adolescents. Indeed, adolescents who participated in civic engagement activities have been found to have …

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints
Ancient human genome data that has accumulated in recent years can be employed to establish the spatiotemporal trajectories of genetic variants associated with human diseases. Such knowledge might illuminate if and how past adaptations impact contemporary human health and medicine. Scarcely any studies have yet been attempted to evaluate the genetic susceptibility to neurodegenerative disorders in ancient human communities. Using publicly available ancient human genome-wide data the present study evaluates the molecular predisposition to neurodegenerative disorders in ancient human communities. To this end we screened the ancient genome-wide data for the presence of variants unequivocally associated with neurodegenerative disorders in …

Analyses Of Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Interviews, Alexander J Adams, Matthew Sherman, James J. Purtill
Rothman Institute Papers
Interviews are a critical component of orthopaedic surgery residency selection for both the applicant and the program. Some institutions no longer report Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) designation or class rank, and US Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 recently switched to pass/fail scoring. During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, all Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education programs conducted virtual interviews and subinternship rotations were restricted. These changes offer significant challenges to the residency match process. The purpose of this study was to examine the residency applicant interview and ranking process at a large urban academic university setting. We hypothesized …

With the increased use of composite materials, researchers have developed many approaches for structural and prognostic health monitoring. Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy (BbDS)/Impedance Spectroscopy (IS) is a state-of-the-art technology that can be used to identify and monitor the minute changes in damage initiation, accumulation, interactions, and the degree of damage in a composite under static and dynamic loading. This work presents a novel artificial neural network (ANN) framework for fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites under fatigue loading, which incorporates dielectric state variables to predict the life (durability) and residual strength (damage tolerance) from real-time acquired dielectric permittivity of the material. The findings …

Investigating Stigma During The Early Stages Of A Pandemic Through The Lens Of Covid-19, Zach Thornton, Bethany Hodge, Sheridan Langford
The University of Louisville Journal of Respiratory Infections
Background: Individuals face stigma associated with numerous health conditions. Stigma can arise rapidly during the early spread of a new disease, adding to the burden felt by those affected. COVID-19 can be used as an example to study stigma during the early phases of a pandemic. This narrative review is a descriptive analysis that tracks the ways in which COVID-19 stigma was discussed in the scholarly literature during the first year of the pandemic to understand how stigma was viewed in the context of a rapidly spreading pandemic.
Methods: PubMed was used as a non-exhaustive sample of the literature. Searches …

Worldwide have been facing the era of dynamic life with the rapidly changing global situation for decades. This era is colored by volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (VUCA) situation that is aggravated by the COVID-19 pandemic. We have all experienced the VUCA situation with the COVID-19 Pandemic that has lasted over 2 years. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)1 report should be a common reference for dealing with situations that are not just uncertain but also called “uncertainty complexes”. So-called because its dimensions take on a new form that has never been seen before in human history. The complexity of …

A Work-Related Thyrotoxic Periodic Paralysis In A Worker Exposed To Heat Stress: A Case Report, Shanti Puji Lestari, Muchtaruddin Mansyur
Occupational and Environmental Medicine Journal of Indonesia
Thyrotoxic Periodic Paralysis (TPP) is an uncommon disorder, characterized by the triad of acute hypokalemia, muscle paralysis, and thyrotoxicosis. Attacks are typically transient, last hours to days, and may be triggered by many conditions, including exposure to heat stress in both indoor and outdoor activities. Indoor workers, especially those working around furnaces, ovens, smelters, and boilers, are at a higher heat stress risk, even higher risk if they have other individual factors such as obesity, dehydration, slower heat acclimation, consume certain medications and presence of underlying diseases. A 48-year-old man presented a sudden onset weakness in all four limbs, associated …
