In The Imaginal Realm Before She Could Read: A Healing A/R/Tographic Inquiry, Barbara Bickel
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
This healing a/r/tographic inquiry ritually cycles through ancestral time to the present inspired by a recently found small grey book above the author’s dad’s desk—10 years after his death. This article shines light and memory onto spirit infused matrixial borderspace(s) through the co-mingling of text and image; returning to a site where text first met image in the early years of the author’s life. She is both the young dreaming artist-child and the responsible artist/researcher/teacher seeking embodied relational imaginal knowledge through the light of both image and word.

Data’S Entanglements: Artmaking As Corresponding Companion During Diffractive Analysis, Kelly Clark/Keefe
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
This essay invites readers into two creative correspondences that emerged during the author’s involvement in a participatory arts-based research project called Life Lines. The Life Lines project aimed at engaging a small group of young adults alongside researchers in their use of multimodal arts practices to inquire into what makes young adult identity work work the way that it does. In Life Lines the phenomenon of identity and the approaches to inquiry used to explore it were conceptualized through a material feminist framework that proposes the co-constituting nature of meaning and matter (i.e., bodies, atmospheres, and objects of …

Assessment Of Co-Occurring Disabilities In Young Children Who Are Deaf And Hard Of Hearing, Brittany A. Dale, Raschelle Neild
Assessment Of Co-Occurring Disabilities In Young Children Who Are Deaf And Hard Of Hearing, Brittany A. Dale, Raschelle Neild
Perspectives on Early Childhood Psychology and Education
Overall, the literature is clear that more research is needed on various assessment techniques for identifying co-occurring disabilities in young children who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH). As individualized, norm-referenced assessment measures are updated to keep up with the changing demographics of the United States, there appears to be more of an effort to include children with various disabilities within the standardization samples; however, the communication barriers and required assessment accommodations remain the most salient with DHH students. Because accommodations are test-specific, psychologists must be cognizant of the accommodation and interpretation procedures of each test they select for …
The Importance Of Early Number Concepts For Learning Mathematics In Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Children, Clifton Langdon, Christopher Kurz, Marie Coppola
The Importance Of Early Number Concepts For Learning Mathematics In Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Children, Clifton Langdon, Christopher Kurz, Marie Coppola
Perspectives on Early Childhood Psychology and Education
This chapter discusses important background knowledge and research findings from a variety of disciplines that inform best practices for supporting optimal mathematical achievement in all children. First, discussion will begin with the importance of early numeracy for later academic outcomes, and why prioritization of instruction time and early intervention are needed to increase the likelihood of a strong foundation in numeracy. Second, a brief overview of numeracy development milestones will provide a basis for discussion of our central thesis: language experiences can impact numerical cognition, which then have a significant impact on academic outcomes. Third, given the importance of numeracy …
Educational Strategies For Deaf Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd), Aaron Shield, Patrick Graham, Raschelle Neild
Educational Strategies For Deaf Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd), Aaron Shield, Patrick Graham, Raschelle Neild
Perspectives on Early Childhood Psychology and Education
In this paper we highlight some of the difficulties that deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are likely to exhibit in the classroom, such as echolalia and insistence on sameness, deficits in perspective-taking and theory of mind, difficulty producing and comprehending facial expressions and pronouns, articulation difficulties, and challenges with social interaction. For each challenging area we propose educational strategies that teachers may find useful, including video modeling, visual schedules, Social Stories, Power Cards, and peer support groups. We encourage educators to be flexible and creative in their use of multiple teaching strategies with these children, …
Asl Rhyme, Rhythm, And Phonological Awareness For Deaf Children, Leala Holcomb
Asl Rhyme, Rhythm, And Phonological Awareness For Deaf Children, Leala Holcomb
Perspectives on Early Childhood Psychology and Education
The author, who is of multigenerational Deaf heritage, provides a review of the literature on spoken and signed rhyme, rhythm, and phonological awareness used with young children. While a foundation of knowledge has been built with early language approaches in spoken language, little is known about parallel forms of these approaches in American Sign Language (ASL). ASL rhyme, rhythm, and phonological awareness have historically been absent from early childhood classrooms that serve Deaf children. The author explores why this is the case and draws upon historical events to provide answers. An autoethnographic account of the author’s experience with early language …

Preparing Practitioners To Work With Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Infants, Toddlers, And Their Families: Professional Competencies That Result In Positive Outcomes, Marilyn Sass-Lehrer, Jodee Crace, Raschelle Neild
Perspectives on Early Childhood Psychology and Education
Infants and toddlers who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) are unique in their physical and individual abilities and resources. Their diversity extends beyond hearing levels and involves physical, cognitive, social-emotional, and communicative attributes. Families with newly identified children have a wide range of backgrounds and experiences that influence how they respond to learning that their child is DHH and what they need from professionals in the first few days and months after their baby has been identified. While knowledge and skills generic to the field of early childhood special education provide a foundation for working with these children …

Session 12: Active Learning To Minimize The Possible Risk From Future Epidemics, Kc Santosh
SDSU Data Science Symposium
In medical imaging informatics, for any future epidemics (e.g., Covid-19), deep learning (DL) models are of no use as they require a large dataset as they take months and even years to collect enough data (with annotations). In such a context, active learning (or human/expert-in-the-loop) is the must, where a machine can learn from the first day with minimum possible labeled data. In unsupervised learning, we propose to build pre-trained DL models that iteratively learn independently over time, where human/expert intervenes only when it makes mistakes and for only a limited data. In our work, deep features are used to …

Along with machine learning modeling, numerical simulations of respiratory airflow and particle transport can be used to improve targeted deposition at the upper respiratory infection site of numerous airborne diseases. Given the need for more patient data from varied demographics, we propose a machine learning-enabled protocol for determining optimal formulation design parameters that may match nasal spray device settings for successful drug delivery. We measured 11 anatomical parameters (including nasopharyngeal volume, nostril heights, and mid-nasal cavity volume) for 10 CT-based nasal geometries representative of the population for this aim. We also ran 160 computational fluid dynamics simulations of drug delivery …

2d Respiratory Sound Analysis To Detect Lung Abnormalities, Rafia Sharmin Alice, Kc Santosh
SDSU Data Science Symposium
Abstract. In this paper, we analyze deep visual features from 2D data representation(s) of the respiratory sound to detect evidence of lung abnormalities. The primary motivation behind this is that visual cues are more important in decision-making than raw data (lung sound). Early detection and prompt treatments are essential for any future possible respiratory disorders, and respiratory sound is proven to be one of the biomarkers. In contrast to state-of-the-art approaches, we aim at understanding/analyzing visual features using our Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) tailored Deep Learning Models, where we consider all possible 2D data such as Spectrogram, Mel-frequency Cepstral Coefficients …

Student, Teacher, Mother, Wife: A Constant Learner’S Education And Call To Action, Taylor D. Bunn
Journal of Multicultural Affairs
The purpose of this reflective single case study was to explore one woman’s perspectives on learning from childhood to adulthood. Though friendly, gregarious, and well-liked, she never quite fit in with others. Well into adulthood, she realized she was gay, prompting her to reflect on her formal and informal education, professional experiences, and personal relationships. Qualitative data were collected via semi-structured interviews and analyzed using Freire’s (1970) conscientization as an underlying framework. The subject openly discussed her struggles, successes, and worldview, candidly reflecting on where the system failed her and how she hopes educators will seize opportunities to learn alongside …
The Intersection Of Academic Freedom And Trigger Warnings, Ashleigh Maldonado
The Intersection Of Academic Freedom And Trigger Warnings, Ashleigh Maldonado
Journal of Multicultural Affairs
The purpose of this policy brief is to explore the intersection of academic freedom and trigger warnings. The author argues that the vague language within academic freedom policies and the blurred lines between judicial jurisdiction over first amendment rights and institutional jurisdiction over academic freedom policies sets the stage for future limitations on teachers’ rights within the classroom. Te author also argues that while much attention is given to the academic freedoms of instructors, more attention should be afforded to the academic freedoms of students when considering their requests for trigger warnings.

Reporting Of Doctoral Student Attrition: A Policy Brief, Cece Lively
Journal of Multicultural Affairs
Roughly half of all doctoral students in the United States will never complete their degree requirements (Council of Graduate Schools, 2020). That staggering number is larger for ethnic minority and female students, particularly for Black students who have the lowest completion rate (47 percent) and who make up only 13 percent of doctoral degrees (Lovitts, 2001). Additionally, retention rates for online students are an additional 10 to 20 percent lower than students who attend in-person (Rovai & Wighting, 2005). Thus, ethnic minority students in online doctoral programs are at a higher risk of not finishing their degrees compared to other …
