Increasing Student Engagement: Case-Based Teaching And Learning, Necole Leland, Lisa Nicholas

UNLV Best Teaching Practices Expo

Case-based learning (CBL) is an active learning approach using hypothetical or real life problems that help learners develop clinical judgment and problem-solving skills (Bastable, 2023). CBL can be used in multiple settings, including the classroom, the clinical environment, and simulation. CBL can be used in most disciplines to bring real life scenarios to life for learners. Learners identify the problem in the case, develop multiple approaches to solving problems, discuss different viewpoints or assumptions, propose alternate decisions, and weigh consequences (Young & Paterson, 2007). CBL helps make connections that transfer theoretical knowledge to practical application (Billings & Halstead, 2020). CBL …

Facial fractures, specifically orbitozygomatic and zygomaticomaxillary complex fractures, are well-documented and common injuries. Pseudoaneurysm formation following cerebrovascular blunt trauma is a rarely experienced complication with an incidence rate of less than 1% with only a few cases reported in the literature. Traumatic pseudoaneurysm formation of the sphenopalatine artery (SPA), the deepest branch of the maxillary artery, is extremely rare due to the deep location of the SPA and its protection from bony landmarks. In craniofacial trauma, pseudoaneurysm formation is not apparent on physical examination due to its deep location and usually presents as persistent nasal bleeding. SPA pseudoaneurysms can present …

Natural Variation In Host Feeding Behaviors Impacts Host Disease And Pathogen Transmission Potential, Alaina C. Pfenning-Butterworth, Rachel E. Vetter, Jessica L. Hite Feb 2023

Natural Variation In Host Feeding Behaviors Impacts Host Disease And Pathogen Transmission Potential, Alaina C. Pfenning-Butterworth, Rachel E. Vetter, Jessica L. Hite

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Animals ranging from mosquitoes to humans often vary their feeding behavior when infected or merely exposed to pathogens. These so-called “sickness behaviors” are part of the innate immune response with many consequences, including avoiding orally transmitted pathogens. Fully understanding the role of this ubiquitous behavior in host defense and pathogen evolution requires a quantitative account of its impact on host and pathogen fitness across environmentally relevant contexts. Here, we use a zooplankton host and fungal pathogen as a case study to ask if infection-mediated feeding behaviors vary across pathogen exposure levels and natural genetic variation in susceptibility to infection. Then, …

The coronavirus pandemic, declared as a national emergency on March 13th, 2020, has caused extreme social and economic disruption all over the world, forever leaving a distinct imprint on history. Although many companies struggled immensely, either barely pulling out of the pandemic alive or having to completely shut down, several other companies have found ways to flourish during this unprecedented time.

The beginning of the pandemic brought lowered advertising rates. Several companies made the marketing decision to run campaigns during this time to take advantage of these lowered rates while creating a company response to the pandemic itself. The world …

Why & What Attorneys Should Know About Community Resources Available To Survivors Of Domestic Violence, Kristen Clarke Kellems, Kristen Clarke Kellems Feb 2023

Why & What Attorneys Should Know About Community Resources Available To Survivors Of Domestic Violence, Kristen Clarke Kellems, Kristen Clarke Kellems

Faculty Publications

This CLE program explains why attorneys representing survivors of domestic violence should understand and use community resources as part of effective legal advocacy. Leaving an abusive relationship can create immediate risks involving safety, housing, finances, transportation, childcare, and emotional health. These barriers can affect a survivor’s stability, decision-making, and ability to participate effectively in a legal case. Drawing on survivor and volunteer-attorney perspectives, the presenters show how appropriate referrals can strengthen both client outcomes and legal representation while keeping attorneys within their professional role.

The program surveys Utah resources available through 211, the Department of Workforce Services, domestic violence shelters, …

Subtypes Of Dual Users Of Combustible And Electronic Cigarettes: Longitudinal Changes In Product Use And Dependence Symptomatology, Anne Buu, Zhaoxue Tong, Zhanrui Cai, Runze Li, James J Yang, Douglas E Jorenby, Megan E Piper

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Introduction: Cross-sectional surveys found behavioral heterogeneity among dual users of combustible and electronic cigarettes. Yet, prior classification did not reflect dynamic interactions between cigarette and e-cigarette consumption, which may reveal changes in product-specific dependence. The contexts of dual use that could inform intervention were also understudied.

Methods: This study conducted secondary analysis on 13 waves of data from 227 dual users who participated in a 2-year observational study. The k-means method for joint trajectories of cigarette and e-cigarette consumption was adopted to identify the subtypes of dual users. The time-varying effect model was used to characterize the subtype-specific trajectories of …

Influence Of Learning Style And Learning Flexibility On Clinical Judgment Of Prelicensure Nursing Students Within A Human Patient Computer Simulation Environment, Elizabeth Sharon Robison Feb 2023

Influence Of Learning Style And Learning Flexibility On Clinical Judgment Of Prelicensure Nursing Students Within A Human Patient Computer Simulation Environment, Elizabeth Sharon Robison

Dissertations

Nursing education is experiencing a transition in how students are exposed to clinical situations. Technology, specifically human patient computer simulation, is replacing human exposure in clinical education (Nehring, 2010b). Kaakinen and Arwood (2009) discuss the need to apply learning theories to instructional designs involving simulation for successful learner-centered outcomes. Developing effective teaching strategies using technology to support enhancing student performance outcomes requires a paradigm shift from traditional, clinical-based models.

The purpose of this study was to begin to close research gaps and support development of evidence-based practice in implementing simulation by examining prelicensure nursing students' learning styles and flexibilities relative …

Nrf2 Sequestration By Ssh1 Tips The Balance From Neuroprotection To Neurodegeneration In Alzheimer’S Disease, Sara G. Cazzaro Buosi

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Oxidative damage is one of the earliest events in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathogenesis and precedes the clinical stage of disease. The nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor (Nrf2) is activated in response to oxidative stress, which protects the brain from oxidative damage and AD pathogenesis. Although Nrf2-mediated oxidative stress response declines with age and becomes dysfunctional in AD brains, the mechanistic basis for this dysfunction is unknown. Here, we demonstrate through in vitro and in vivo models, as well as in human AD brain tissue, that Slingshot homolog-1 (SSH1) acts as a counterweight to neuroprotective Nrf2 in response to oxidative stress …

The Doctor Knows Best: Take Your Schoolwide Temperature With Data, Hank Bohanon, Todd Winton, Sam Cusworth, Sheryl Healy

Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works

No matter what type of doctor you see, they usually collect similar information. Even before the doctor enters the room, someone will assess your blood pressure, weight, height, and temperature. These are markers related to your health. If your blood pressure or temperature is too high, or perhaps your weight has gone up or down drastically since your last visit, the doctor will know something in your treatment plan needs to be addressed. Like screening for these essential health markers, schools can also use data to see how the larger system is working. These screening tools also help teams determine …

The Landscape Of Immunotherapy For Retroperitoneal Sarcoma, Alicia A Gingrich, Elise F Nassif, Christina L Roland, Emily Z Keung

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Significant multidisciplinary scientific effort has been undertaken to understand the heterogeneous family of neoplasms that comprise soft tissue sarcomas. Within this family of neoplasms, outcomes for retroperitoneal sarcomas (RPS) are currently limited given a lack of effective therapies. In this review, we focus on immunotherapy and its relationship with the common RPS histologic subtypes. Although initial outcomes for RPS patients with immune checkpoint inhibition alone have been somewhat disappointing, subsequent analyses on histologies, the tumor microenvironment, sarcoma immune class, tumor infiltrating lymphocytes and genetic analysis for tumor mutational burden have yielded insight into the interplay between sarcomas and immunotherapy. Such …

Blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm (BPDCN) is a rare hematologic malignancy with historically poor outcomes and no worldwide consensus treatment approach. Unique among most hematologic malignancies for its frequent cutaneous involvement, BPDCN can also invade other extramedullary compartments, including the central nervous system. Generally affecting older adults, many patients are unfit to receive intensive chemotherapy, and although hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is preferred for younger, fit individuals, not all are eligible. One recent therapeutic breakthrough is that all BPDCNs express CD123 (IL3Rα) and that this accessible surface marker can be pharmacologically targeted. The first-in-class agent for BPDCN, tagraxofusp, which targets …

Uk Men’S Experience Of The Gender-Role Journey And Implications For Clinicians And Mental Health Services, Laurie Grandi, Steve Minton, Katie Tipton, Jon May

School of Psychology

Gender-role journey (GRJ) theory (O’Neil, 2015; O’Neil & Egan, 1992) provides a framework for exploring men’s transition from accepting traditional gender roles toward pro-feminist activism and gender-role transcendence on a bipolar continuum. Previous research findings suggest that men may experience distress and ambivalence when questioning traditional gender roles. A better understanding of this distress could help therapists effectively explore gender-role attitudes with men. In this study, latent profile analysis was used to identify distinct categories of men in the U.K. (N = 569) from a convenience, general population sample based on GRJ-phase attitudes. Six categories were identified and labeled based …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

IntroductionThe technology to mine the ocean floor for valuable minerals such as copper, nickel, and cobalt is currently being developed. Scientists have warned repeatedly about potentially serious and irreversible environmental impacts from deep seabed mining (DSM), including but not limited to: removal and destruction of sensitive and poorly known seafloor habitats and species; metal-contaminated and fine-particle sediment plumes that can impact benthic and pelagic fauna; changes to water properties; and increases in noise and light1,2. What remains to be substantially debated are the social impacts of DSM.

Department of Paediatrics and Child Health

In the field of rare diseases, progress in molecular diagnostics led to the recognition that variants linked to autosomal-dominant neurodegenerative diseases of later onset can, in the context of biallelic inheritance, cause devastating neurodevelopmental disorders and infantile or childhood-onset neurodegeneration. TOR1A-associated arthrogryposis multiplex congenita 5 (AMC5) is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder arising from biallelic variants in TOR1A, a gene that in the heterozygous state is associated to torsion dystonia-1 (DYT1 or DYT-TOR1A), an early-onset dystonia with reduced penetrance. While 15 individuals with TOR1A-AMC5 have been reported (less than 10 in detail), a systematic investigation of the full disease-associated spectrum has …

Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) balance self-renewal and differentiation to maintain hematopoietic fitness throughout life. In steady-state conditions, HSC exhaustion is prevented by the maintenance of most HSCs in a quiescent state, with cells entering the cell cycle only occasionally. HSC quiescence is regulated by retinoid and fatty-acid ligands of transcriptional factors of the nuclear retinoid X receptor (RXR) family. Herein, we show that dual deficiency for hematopoietic RXRα and RXRβ induces HSC exhaustion, myeloid cell/megakaryocyte differentiation, and myeloproliferative-like disease. RXRα and RXRβ maintain HSC quiescence, survival, and chromatin compaction; moreover, transcriptome changes in RXRα;RXRβ-deficient HSCs include premature acquisition of an …

Chikungunya Virus And Its Envelope Protein E2 Induce Hyperalgesia In Mice: Inhibition By Anti-E2 Monoclonal Antibodies And By Targeting Trpv1, Carina Z Segato-Vendrameto, Felipe A Pinho-Ribeiro, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Chikungunya virus is an arthropod-borne infectious agent that causes Chikungunya fever disease. About 90% of the infected patients experience intense polyarthralgia, affecting mainly the extremities but also the large joints such as the knees. Chronic disease symptoms persist for months, even after clearance of the virus from the blood. Envelope proteins stimulate the immune response against the Chikungunya virus, becoming an important therapeutic target. We inactivated the Chikungunya virus (iCHIKV) and produced recombinant E2 (rE2) protein and three different types of anti-rE2 monoclonal antibodies. Using these tools, we observed that iCHIKV and rE2 protein induced mechanical hyperalgesia (electronic aesthesiometer test) …

Regulation of RNA processing contributes profoundly to tissue development and physiology. Here, we report that serine-arginine-rich splicing factor 1 (SRSF1) is essential for hepatocyte function and survival. Although SRSF1 is mainly known for its many roles in mRNA metabolism, it is also crucial for maintaining genome stability. We show that acute liver damage in the setting of targeted SRSF1 deletion in mice is associated with the excessive formation of deleterious RNA-DNA hybrids (R-loops), which induce DNA damage. Combining hepatocyte-specific transcriptome, proteome, and RNA binding analyses, we demonstrate that widespread genotoxic stress following SRSF1 depletion results in global inhibition of mRNA …

The discovery of monokinase-selective inhibitors for patients is challenging because the 500+ kinases encoded by the human genome share highly conserved catalytic domains. Until now, no selective inhibitors unique for a single transforming growth factor β (TGFβ) family transmembrane receptor kinase, including bone morphogenetic protein receptor type 2 (BMPR2), have been reported. This dearth of receptor-specific kinase inhibitors hinders therapeutic options for skeletal defects and cancer as a result of an overactivated BMP signaling pathway. By screening 4.17 billion “unbiased” and “kinase-biased” DNA-encoded chemical library molecules, we identified hits CDD-1115 and CDD-1431, respectively, that were low-nanomolar selective kinase inhibitors of …

Inherited retinal diseases (IRDs) are a diverse set of visual disorders that collectively represent a major cause of early-onset blindness. With the reduction in sequencing costs in recent years, whole-genome sequencing (WGS) is being used more frequently, particularly when targeted gene panels and whole-exome sequencing (WES) fail to detect pathogenic mutations in patients. In this study, we performed mutation screens using WGS for a cohort of 311 IRD patients whose mutations were undetermined. A total of nine putative pathogenic mutations in six IRD patients were identified, including six novel mutations. Among them, four were deep intronic mutations that affected mRNA …

Effects Of A Head-Cooling Cap On 5-Km Running Performance In The Heat, Bernhard J. Spannagl, Mark Et Willems, Andrew T. West

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 16(6): 193-204, 2023. Cooling the head region during exercise can enhance running performance, but this observation is limited to intermittent cooling. This study investigated the effects of continuous head cooling on 5-km running time-trial (TT) performance in hot conditions. Six male and four female triathletes completed two experimental sessions consisting of two 10-minute runs at 50% and 70% O2max followed by a 5-km TT in the heat (32.0±0.3 °C, 50.1±1.2% RH). In a randomized crossover design, either an ice-filled cooling cap or no cooling cap was provided prior to the 10-minute run at 70%O …
