Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Inspired by the electron-activated dissociation technique, the most potent tool for glycan characterization, we recently developed free radical reagents for glycan structural elucidation. However, the underlying mechanisms of free radical-induced glycan dissociation remain unclear and, therefore, hinder the rational optimization of the free radical reagents and the interpretation of tandem mass spectra, especially the accurate assignment of the relatively low-abundant but information-rich ions. In this work, we selectively incorporate the 13C and/or 18O isotopes into cellobiose to study the mechanisms for free radical-induced dissociation of glycans. The eight isotope-labeled cellobioses include 1-13C, 3-13C, 1′- …

Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research is to apply both computer vision and natural language processing techniques for visual question answering (VQA) on a medical image dataset. Deep learning and machine learning libraries were used in the research. The research includes understanding key achievements in the field of visual question answering, identifying techniques applied in general images and applying them along with new techniques to medical images. There are many more articles explaining the application of visual question answering to general images than on applying VQA specifically to medical images. In this research, I initially developed a model of VQA that …

Patients with a new cancer diagnosis can experience distress when diagnosed. There are disparities in treatment of cancer patients based on social determinants, but minimal research exists on the relationship of those social determinants and distress after a new cancer diagnosis. Our goals were to determine the social determinants associated with distress after a new cancer diagnosis and determine the relationship of distress with outcome. Patients with a new cancer diagnosis at one institution from January 2019 to December 2020 were analyzed. Patients were given the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) distress thermometer during their first visit. Demographics, tumor characteristics, …

When Normal Is Not Normal: A Theory Of The Non-Linear And Discontinuous Process Of Desired Change And Its Managerial Implications, Richard Boyatzis, Udayan Dhar
Faculty Journal Articles
Desirable change may appear chaotic, slow, or not sustainable. We may expect linear, continuous change, but it eludes us. Measurement and statistical analysis about behavior change often requires data showing continuity and having normal (i.e., Gaussian) distributions. When we encounter phenomenon that does not fit this expectation, we seek to transform the data to render it compatible with our method of analysis. We move from actual behavior to perception of it through surveys or transformations of the data. We believe this ignores “naturally” occurring data and what it says. Such techniques are convenient for statistics but may hide important features …

A Narrative Inquiry On Public Middle School Teachers Experiences With Demoralization, Jessica E. Alfieri
Doctor of Education Program Dissertations
Teachers may become demoralized when they feel they are unable to access the moral rewards of teaching. Some moral rewards of teaching include building relationships with students, adjusting methods of instruction that impacts individual student growth, and completing a creative and engaging lesson plan. The purpose of this qualitative narrative inquiry was to explore the experiences of public middle school teachers with demoralization in the context of their teaching environments. Six participants who self-identified as demoralized completed semi-structured interviews over Zoom. These interviews were then restoried into narratives, then manually coded into themes. The themes that were developed included time …

Exposure To Free School Meals In Kindergarten Has Lasting Positive Effects On Students’ Attendance, Samantha Trajkovski, Amy Ellen Schwartz, Michah W. Rothbart
Exposure To Free School Meals In Kindergarten Has Lasting Positive Effects On Students’ Attendance, Samantha Trajkovski, Amy Ellen Schwartz, Michah W. Rothbart
Population Health Research Brief Series
The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) is the country's second-largest food assistance program, serving free or reduced-price meals to 30 million students daily. A growing number of schools and districts offer Universal Free Meals (UFM), which provides free meals to all students regardless of income. This brief summarizes findings examining the relationship between exposure to UFM in kindergarten and attendance and weight outcomes in NYC students from grades K-3. The results demonstrate that children who receive free meals through UFM in kindergarten have better school attendance than those who do not. In addition, there is no evidence that receipt of …
Effects Of Neighborhood Disadvantage And Peer Deviance On Conduct Problems: Interactions With Age Of Onset, Courtney Marie Goetz
Effects Of Neighborhood Disadvantage And Peer Deviance On Conduct Problems: Interactions With Age Of Onset, Courtney Marie Goetz
LSU Master's Theses
Youth with conduct problems (CP) generally fall into two developmental classifications, child-onset and adolescent-onset, which exhibit different causal processes and life course trajectories. Research suggests that child-onset CP is more likely to be related to individual predispositions, while adolescent-onset CP is more associated with social factors, such as peer delinquency. Living in impoverished and disorganized neighborhoods increases the risk for associating with deviant peers. Thus, the current study tested the hypothesis that neighborhood factors would be more strongly associated with adolescent-onset CP than child-onset CP, which would be explained by a greater association with deviant peers. Linear and negative binomial …
Are Income Tax Breaks For Seniors Good For State Economic Growth?, Ben Brewer, Karen S. Conway, Jon Rork
Are Income Tax Breaks For Seniors Good For State Economic Growth?, Ben Brewer, Karen S. Conway, Jon Rork
Carsey Publications
In this brief, authors Ben Brewer, Karen Conway, and Jon Rork discuss the findings of their recently published study that investigates, directly, the impact on state economic growth of expanding income tax breaks for seniors. All state income tax systems contain provisions that reduce the state income tax burden for elderly households, and most modest-income elderly households owe little in state income taxes. Each year state legislatures consider expansions to these tax provisions, which tend to benefit primarily upper-income elderly households, with advocates suggesting such changes will be “good” for the state, in part by retaining and attracting elderly residents. …
