Webinar: Improving Recreational Trail Accessibility With A Volcanic Ash Treatment, Charles Riley, Ashton Greer Feb 2023

Webinar: Improving Recreational Trail Accessibility With A Volcanic Ash Treatment, Charles Riley, Ashton Greer

TREC Webinar Series

Recreational trails serve as valuable transportation corridors and support the health of users. Wheelchair accessibility of recreational trails depends on a variety of conditions, including slope, cross-slope, and surface characteristics. This project focused on improving the firmness and stability of a 0.2-mile section of trail that was otherwise accessible. The existing trail surface consisted of loose ¼” off-specification aggregate on native soil. A volcanic ash-Portland cement binder, studied in prior research, was batched, distributed, mixed, wetted, and compacted on site to improve the firmness and stability of the surface resulting in a smoother surface with less rolling resistance. The webinar …

OBJECTIVES: To identify correlates of survival and perioperative outcomes of upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) patients undergoing open (ORNU), laparoscopic (LRNU), and robotic (RRNU) radical nephroureterectomy (RNU).

METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, multicenter study that included non-metastatic UTUC patients who underwent RNU between 1990-2020. Multiple imputation by chained equations was used to impute missing data. Patients were divided into three groups based on their surgical treatment and were adjusted by 1:1:1 propensity score matching (PSM). Survival outcomes per group were estimated for recurrence-free survival (RFS), bladder recurrence-free survival (BRFS), cancer-specific survival (CSS), and overall survival (OS). Perioperative outcomes: Intraoperative blood …

Shared Reflection On The Perceived Effect Of Culturally Responsive School Leadership On Student Suspension Data In K-8th Grade Chicago Public Schools, Christopher Alan Donald Graves Feb 2023

Shared Reflection On The Perceived Effect Of Culturally Responsive School Leadership On Student Suspension Data In K-8th Grade Chicago Public Schools, Christopher Alan Donald Graves

Theses and Dissertations

Racial discrimination in schools in the U.S. has resulted in a disproportionate number of Black students receiving exclusionary and punitive consequences, in which they are more likely to end up part of the School to Prison Pipeline and less likely to graduate. The researcher completed interviews with eight elementary school principals in Chicago Public Schools whom were identified using publicly available data. All participants were selected for their prior success in reducing the number of Black student suspensions by at least 20% during the years of 2016-2019. The focus of this study was to determine (1) What school leadership practices …

Hospital Uncompensated Care Costs And Profits: A Comparison Of Mississippi And Arkansas, Pre- And Post- Medicaid Expansion, Edrin R. Williams Feb 2023

Hospital Uncompensated Care Costs And Profits: A Comparison Of Mississippi And Arkansas, Pre- And Post- Medicaid Expansion, Edrin R. Williams

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Research Objective

Mississippi's healthcare systems are ranked 49 out of 50 on many overall performance indicators, including access to care, quality of care, cost and utilization of services, health outcomes, and income-based healthcare disparities. Nationally, some evidence suggests coverage gaps are wider and growing faster in states that have yet to adopt Medicaid expansion. Multiple hospitals across Mississippi are currently experiencing financial instability, which could cause service reductions or closures, particularly in rural (54%) areas such as the Mississippi Delta. Because of these performance constraints, we evaluated Mississippi hospital uncompensated care costs, total margins, and operating margins for years 2011-2020. …

Holistic Framework To Contextualize Dietary Quality Assessment: A Critical Review, Jessica M. Phelan, Richard R. Rosenkranz, Connor J. Phelan, Sara K. Rosenkranz

Kinesiology and Nutrition Sciences Faculty Research

Numerous dietary quality indices exist to help quantify overall dietary intake and behaviors associated with positive health outcomes. Most indices focus solely on biomedical factors and nutrient or food intake, and exclude the influence of important social and environmental factors associated with dietary intake. Using the Diet Quality Index- International as one sample index to illustrate our proposed holistic conceptual framework, this critical review seeks to elucidate potential adaptations to dietary quality assessment by considering—in parallel—biomedical, environmental, and social factors. Considering these factors would add context to dietary quality assessment, influencing post-assessment recommendations for use across various populations and circumstances. …

The Crafting Of Pre-Service Special Education Teachers’ Perceptions Of Problem Behavior: A Post-Intentional Phenomenological Study, Jamillah Gilbert Feb 2023

The Crafting Of Pre-Service Special Education Teachers’ Perceptions Of Problem Behavior: A Post-Intentional Phenomenological Study, Jamillah Gilbert

Theses and Dissertations

A disproportionate number of Black students with disabilities experience exclusionary discipline practices (e.g., suspensions and expulsions) in K-12 public schools. This disparity persists, regardless of the severity of identified problem behavior, the school’s average socio-economic status, or the type of public school attended. Given that teacher education programs (TEPs) are pivotal training grounds for pedagogical and philosophical formation, it is crucial for TEPs to demonstrate accountability for building critical consciousness of the factors that produce and perpetuate this disparity. Gaining a fuller understanding of how pre-service special education teachers craft their perceptions of problem behavior during their TEPs may help …

The Integrative Conceptual Model: Ecological Risk And Protective Factors For East Asian Immigrant Fathers’ Psychological Well-Being In The United States, Kwangman Ko, Sun-A Lee, Jaerim Lee

ETSU Faculty Works

In response to the dearth of research focusing solely on immigrant fathers, we propose the Integrative Conceptual Model to investigate the psychological well-being of recent immigrant fathers from East Asia to the United States. This model addresses how multiple factors in the society (e.g., policy), work and community (e.g., employment), family (e.g., father-child and couple relationships), and individual (e.g., education) levels in the host and home countries are linked to East Asian immigrant fathers’ adaptation to their new environment. More specifically, we focus on the unique risk factors and protective factors to their adjustment, which are vital to the psychological …

Analysis And Technical Optimization Of Processing Condition For Better Quality Of Robusta Coffee Production, Usman Ahmad, Khalimatus Sa’Diyah, Sathivel Subramaniam

Faculty Publications

The wet processing of robusta coffee starts with harvesting coffee cherries, followed by sorting the cherries, pulping, fermentation, washing, drying, hard skin hulling, bean sorting, and packaging. Soaking fruit before pulping is an alternative for coffee farmers to delay the pulping process if time does not al-low it. The fermentation process aims to remove mucus that is firmly attached to the hard skin. The addition of L. casei bacteria can accelerate the process but affect the final taste. This study aimed to optimize the duration of soaking and fermentation processes for obtaining coffee beans with a minimum number of unpeeled …

A Modern Multimodal Pain Protocol Eliminates The Need For Opioids For Most Patients Following Total Knee Arthroplasty: Results From A Retrospective Comparative Cohort Study, Leland Van Deventer, Amy Bronstone, Claudia Leonardi, Matthew Bennett, Peter Yager, Vinod Dasa

School of Medicine Faculty Publications

Purpose: Modern multimodal analgesia has been shown to significantly reduce opioid use following total knee arthroplasty (TKA). This study was conducted to determine if changing TKA discharge opioid prescriptions from automatic to upon request resulted in more opioid free recoveries without compromising pain control. Methods: Between December 2019 and August 2021, an orthopedic surgeon performed 144 primary unilateral TKAs; patients received the same multimodal analgesia protocol except for postoperative opioid prescribing. The first consecutively-treated cohort automatically received an opioid prescription following discharge (automatic group) and the second cohort received opioid prescriptions only upon request (upon request group). Opioid prescription data …

Urethral Caruncle With Associated Renoureteric Anomalies, Sohail Ahmad, Akash B. Pati, Santosh K. Mahalik, Kanishka Das

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

A urethral caruncle is a rare differential diagnosis for a prolapsed mass at the urethral meatus. The aetiopathogenesis of this entity is unclear. We report a three-year-old female patient who presented to a tertiary care teaching hospital in India in 2019 with intermittent bleeding from the introitus for a month. Investigations revealed a urethral caruncle and associated renal anomalies which has not been described in the previous literature. The patient was discharged with a prescription of a Sitz bath twice daily and advised to apply betamethasone (0.1%) cream locally once daily. There was a significant improvement after six weeks of …

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Scrub typhus is a disease endemic to the Indian subcontinent caused by the obligate intracellular pleomorphic organism, Orientia tsutsugamushi. Scrub typhus, among other acute febrile illnesses, manifests as prodromal symptoms of fever, malaise, myalgia and anorexia followed by a distinct maculopapular rash, hepatosplenomegaly and lymphadenopathy. We report the case of a patient presenting to tertiary care hospital in southern India in 2021 who developed a rare cutaneous vasculitis secondary to infection with Orientia tsutsugamushi. After performing the Weil-Felix test, a diagnostic titre of >1:640 against OXK was obtained. Furthermore, a skin biopsy was carried out which confirmed the diagnosis of …
