Symposium: The Future Of Reproductive Rights: An Embryo Is Not A Person: Rejecting Prenatal Personhood For A More Complex View Of Prenatal Life, Cynthia Soohoo

This essay considers current claims for prenatal personhood after the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. It first explains how the Dobbs decision unnecessarily adopts a binary view of prenatal life, suggesting that the only option for courts and legislatures is to recognize prenatal personhood or deny protection for prenatal life. This ignores popular understandings that certain laws can and should protect prenatal life, especially where criminal or tortious actions are concerned, but not grant full legal personhood. The Dobbs decision also refused to draw meaningful lines about the value of prenatal life in …
Detection And Capture Of Nitrogen Fixing Bacteria From Soil And Roots Using Plant Specific Lectins, Alana Horton
Detection And Capture Of Nitrogen Fixing Bacteria From Soil And Roots Using Plant Specific Lectins, Alana Horton
Natural Sciences and Mathematics | Biological Sciences Master's Theses
Diazotrophs increase plant productivity by providing ammonia directly to plants in the rhizosphere or through association with the roots (Sun et al., 2021). Leveraging diazotrophs can aid in the reduction or application of harmful synthetic nitrogen fertilizers. This thesis aims to use plant root proteins, or lectins, to more rapidly recover viable diazotrophs that are likely to associate with crops. In this study, lectins, are used to recover bacteria from bulk soil by taking advantage of the binding relationship between lectins and bacterial cell surface polysaccharides. When commercially-available lectins were used with a magnetic pulldown to separate the lectin, bacterial …

Public-Private Partnership (P3) Success: Critical Success Factors For Local Government Services And Infrastructure Delivery, Antonio M. Lopez, George M. Marakas
Engaged Management ReView
The Public-Private Partnership (P3) approach is a viable option to address the slow growth and burgeoning need to deliver infrastructure projects and services by state and local governments. This study focuses on identifying critical success factors (CSF) that influence the success of P3s for local government service and infrastructure delivery. A framework is presented for integrating relationship and project management CSFs identified from previous literature into P3s. In addition, public agency entrepreneurial orientation is introduced as a potential CSF – a focus that has been absent in previous P3 CSF literature. To empirically assess the influence of these CSFs on …
Augmenting Digital Stethoscopes For Spatial Auscultatory Imaging, D Shin
Augmenting Digital Stethoscopes For Spatial Auscultatory Imaging, D Shin
Defensive Publications Series
While digital stethoscopes are easy to use and enable recording the diagnostic signals to external storage, the process of manually choosing the points on the patient’s body at which stethoscope measurements are to be taken is the same for analog and digital stethoscopes. This can be inefficient and suboptimal in terms of acquiring the most suitable and useful auscultatory data. This disclosure describes techniques to augment a digital stethoscope to perform spatial auscultatory imaging via simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) techniques enabled by a camera and inertial measurement unit (IMU) on the digital stethoscope. The SLAM techniques provide the digital …

Introduction: The perceptions of students, faculty, staff, and clinicians regarding blindness or visual impairment (BVI) and physical therapist practice were explored before, during, and after interactions with a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) student with BVI.
Review of Literature: Information is sparse about the prevalence of students with disabilities in DPT programs in the United States. Medical school programs that welcome students with disabilities report positive interactions with faculty and student peers.
Subjects: 36 (20 students, 11 faculty, 2 staff, and 3 clinical instructors)
Methods: A recent DPT graduate (pseudonym JM) with BVI classified as …

Viscoelastic Properties Of Human Facial Skin And Comparisons With Facial Prosthetic Elastomers, Mark W. Beatty, Alvin G. Wee, D. B. Marx, Lauren Ridgway, Bobby Simetich, Thiago Carvalho De Sousa, Kevin Vakilzadian, Joel Schulte
Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications
Prosthesis discomfort and a lack of skin-like quality is a source of patient dissatisfaction with facial prostheses. To engineer skin-like replacements, knowledge of the differences between facial skin properties and those for prosthetic materials is essential. This project measured six viscoelastic properties (percent laxity, stiffness, elastic deformation, creep, absorbed energy, and percent elasticity) at six facial locations with a suction device in a human adult population equally stratified for age, sex, and race. The same properties were measured for eight facial prosthetic elastomers currently available for clinical usage. The results showed that the prosthetic materials were 1.8 to 6.4 times …

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Early Retirements In Law Enforcement, Alecia Ainslie
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Early Retirements In Law Enforcement, Alecia Ainslie
Master of Arts in Criminal Justice Leadership
The American Psychiatric Association defines post-traumatic stress disorder as a psychiatric disorder that may occur in people who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event such as a natural disaster, a serious accident, a terrorist act, war/combat, or rape or who have been threatened with death, sexual violence, or serious injury (Torres, 2020). Why are law enforcement officers retiring at an alarming rate due to post-traumatic stress disorder? “Law enforcement professionals anticipate and accept the unique dangers and pressures of their chosen profession. However, people under stress find it harder than people not experiencing stress to connect with others and …

Law Enforcement’S Use Of Social Media: It Is More Then Just A Post, Brad Litke
Master of Arts in Criminal Justice Leadership
Social media has become a preferred way to communicate for many and can be a look into the user’s personal life. However, law enforcement also knows this. Law enforcement’s use of social media for investigations has been proven to be effective in monitoring gatherings and helping to solve crimes. While legal, law enforcement also has an ethical responsibility to the community and have strong policies in place to prevent misuse of this tool. This is not the only use of social media by law enforcement. Social media is also used to interact with the community. Reviewing the good and bad …

Culture Of Wellness Toward Resiliency, Shelby Stemig
Master of Arts in Criminal Justice Leadership
Stress and burnout are increasingly prevalent amongst law enforcement officers and civilian staff due to job demands and job-related traumas. A culture of wellness planning is how administrations can build resiliency against stress and burnout. A wellness plan should emphasize organizational responsibility, officer responsibility, formal and informal leadership, and external collaborations. Agencies can also utilize the same cognitive behavioral therapies that supervised release agents find beneficial for clients. There are great similarities between the utilization of cognitive behavioral interventions, evidence-based models, and thought behavioral links between supervised release clients and law enforcement staff members. Often, cognitive behavioral therapies are used …

Compendium-Wide Analysis Of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Core And Accessory Genes Reveals Transcriptional Patterns Across Strains Pao1 And Pa14., Alexandra J Lee, Georgia Doing, Samuel L Neff, Taylor Reiter, Deborah A Hogan, Casey S Greene
Faculty Research 2023
Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen that causes difficult-to-treat infections. Two well-studied divergent P. aeruginosa strain types, PAO1 and PA14, have significant genomic heterogeneity, including diverse accessory genes present in only some strains. Genome content comparisons find core genes that are conserved across both PAO1 and PA14 strains and accessory genes that are present in only a subset of PAO1 and PA14 strains. Here, we use recently assembled transcriptome compendia of publicly available P. aeruginosa RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) samples to create two smaller compendia consisting of only strain PAO1 or strain PA14 samples with each aligned to their cognate reference …

Webinar: Improving Recreational Trail Accessibility With A Volcanic Ash Treatment, Charles Riley, Ashton Greer
Webinar: Improving Recreational Trail Accessibility With A Volcanic Ash Treatment, Charles Riley, Ashton Greer
TREC Webinar Series
Recreational trails serve as valuable transportation corridors and support the health of users. Wheelchair accessibility of recreational trails depends on a variety of conditions, including slope, cross-slope, and surface characteristics. This project focused on improving the firmness and stability of a 0.2-mile section of trail that was otherwise accessible. The existing trail surface consisted of loose ¼” off-specification aggregate on native soil. A volcanic ash-Portland cement binder, studied in prior research, was batched, distributed, mixed, wetted, and compacted on site to improve the firmness and stability of the surface resulting in a smoother surface with less rolling resistance. The webinar …

OBJECTIVES: To identify correlates of survival and perioperative outcomes of upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) patients undergoing open (ORNU), laparoscopic (LRNU), and robotic (RRNU) radical nephroureterectomy (RNU).
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, multicenter study that included non-metastatic UTUC patients who underwent RNU between 1990-2020. Multiple imputation by chained equations was used to impute missing data. Patients were divided into three groups based on their surgical treatment and were adjusted by 1:1:1 propensity score matching (PSM). Survival outcomes per group were estimated for recurrence-free survival (RFS), bladder recurrence-free survival (BRFS), cancer-specific survival (CSS), and overall survival (OS). Perioperative outcomes: Intraoperative blood …

Shared Reflection On The Perceived Effect Of Culturally Responsive School Leadership On Student Suspension Data In K-8th Grade Chicago Public Schools, Christopher Alan Donald Graves
Shared Reflection On The Perceived Effect Of Culturally Responsive School Leadership On Student Suspension Data In K-8th Grade Chicago Public Schools, Christopher Alan Donald Graves
Theses and Dissertations
Racial discrimination in schools in the U.S. has resulted in a disproportionate number of Black students receiving exclusionary and punitive consequences, in which they are more likely to end up part of the School to Prison Pipeline and less likely to graduate. The researcher completed interviews with eight elementary school principals in Chicago Public Schools whom were identified using publicly available data. All participants were selected for their prior success in reducing the number of Black student suspensions by at least 20% during the years of 2016-2019. The focus of this study was to determine (1) What school leadership practices …

Hospital Uncompensated Care Costs And Profits: A Comparison Of Mississippi And Arkansas, Pre- And Post- Medicaid Expansion, Edrin R. Williams
Hospital Uncompensated Care Costs And Profits: A Comparison Of Mississippi And Arkansas, Pre- And Post- Medicaid Expansion, Edrin R. Williams
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Research Objective
Mississippi's healthcare systems are ranked 49 out of 50 on many overall performance indicators, including access to care, quality of care, cost and utilization of services, health outcomes, and income-based healthcare disparities. Nationally, some evidence suggests coverage gaps are wider and growing faster in states that have yet to adopt Medicaid expansion. Multiple hospitals across Mississippi are currently experiencing financial instability, which could cause service reductions or closures, particularly in rural (54%) areas such as the Mississippi Delta. Because of these performance constraints, we evaluated Mississippi hospital uncompensated care costs, total margins, and operating margins for years 2011-2020. …
