It is well-known that a stigma exists toward tattooed individuals. In the corporate world, many employers have asked their employees to cover any skin ink to preserve the image the company may have. Even in the U.S. Army, recruits are restricted in the placement of their tattoos, not being able to have designs on their face or certain sizes on their neck and hands (Lacdan, 2022). Studies show that “people view tattooed individuals as possessing a number of negative character attributes'' (Broussard & Harton, 2018). The question we must ask ourselves is why these stigmas exist. Not only are the …

Cuyahoga County Grocery Store Assessment, 2023, Roger Sikes, B.J. Fletcher
All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications
High profile grocery store closures in working class neighborhoods have galvanized community efforts and political will to address grocery store gaps – albeit in a reactive manner. Grocery stores are an essential part of our communities, providing access to food, medicine, jobs, household items and banking services. Their relevance merits a robust focus on policy solutions.
This Grocery Store Assessment is a collaboration among public sector entities and neighborhood leaders to better understand the grocery store landscape, learn from implementation efforts and develop proactive policy solutions. There are 223 small, mid and large-scale grocery stores and 11,000 grocery workers in …

Background: Identifying at-risk children with optimal specificity and sensitivity to allow for the appropriate intervention strategies to be implemented is crucial to improving the health and well-being of children. We determined relationships of body mass indexes for age and sex percentile (BMI%) classifications to actual body composition using validated and convenient methodologies and compared fat and non-fat mass estimates to normative cut-off reference values to determine guideline reliability. We hypothesized that we would achieve an improved ability to identify at-risk children using simple, non-invasive body composition and index measures.
Methods: Cross-sectional study of a volunteer convenience sample of 1,064 (537 …

The New York State Dental Journal
The purpose of this study is to determine the student perceptions on teaching methods for first year dental students using zoom to teach didactics and preclinical hand skills. Because of COVID- 19 other means of teaching had to be implemented and classes were held remotely. Our aim is to determine student perceptions on retention, understanding and learning of didactic and preclinical hands on lectures. Students felt that didactic lectures through zoom increased their retention and understanding in learning the material. They felt that pre-clinical hands on lectures through zoom decreased their retention and understanding in learning.

Making Morbidity Multiple: History, Legacies, And Possibilities For Global Health, Justin Dixon, Emily Mendenhall, Edna Bosire, Felix Limbani, Rashida A. Ferrand, Clare I R. Chandler
Brain and Mind Institute
Multimorbidity has been framed as a pressing global health challenge that exposes the limits of systems organised around single diseases. This article seeks to expand and strengthen current thinking around multimorbidity by analysing its construction within the field of global health. We suggest that the significance of multimorbidity lies not only in challenging divisions between disease categories but also in what it reveals about the culture and history of transnational biomedicine. Drawing on social research from sub-Saharan Africa to ground our arguments, we begin by describing the historical processes through which morbidity was made divisible in biomedicine and how the …
Labor Market Regulation And Worker Power, Hiba Hafiz, Ioana Marinescu
Labor Market Regulation And Worker Power, Hiba Hafiz, Ioana Marinescu
University of Chicago Law Review
Due to a lack of competition among employers in the labor market, employers have monopsony power, or power to pay workers less than what the workers contribute to the employers’ bottom line. “Worker power” is workers’ ability to obtain higher wages and better working conditions. While the antitrust agencies have just begun developing policy and enforcement strategies to regulate employer monopsony, broader government policies that impact market forces, the formation of labor market institutions, and workers’ voices and exit options also play a defining role in shaping worker power relative to employers. For example, in addition to antitrust enforcement, worker …
Introduction To The Symposium On Labor Market Power, Eric A. Posner
Introduction To The Symposium On Labor Market Power, Eric A. Posner
University of Chicago Law Review
Recent empirical work on labor markets reveals that they are beset by frictions, including high levels of concentration and frequent collusion, contrary to the traditional view of labor markets as being perfectly competitive.1 The implications of this work for law and policy have only begun to be explored. The University of Chicago Law Review convened a symposium to bring together scholars from various disciplines and with different subject matter expertise but with a common interest in understanding the regulation of labor markets in light of new empirical results. The papers delivered at the symposium have been published in this symposium …

Labor Market Concentration And Competition Policy Across The Atlantic, Satoshi Araki, Andrea Bassanini, Andrew Green, Luca Marcolin, Cristina Volpin
University of Chicago Law Review
Drawing upon data from the largest cross-country study of labor market concentration to date, this Essay analyzes the level of concentration of labor-input markets in Europe and North America and provides a comparative perspective on employers’ monopsony power. It explores the characteristics of monopsony in labor markets and documents its impact by looking at the magnitude of employer concentration in selected jurisdictions. Using a harmonized dataset of online vacancies, this Essay shows that European labor markets are no more competitive than North American ones. It also supports the view that the effects of concentration on labor markets are broadly similar …

Civilizational Heritage In The Age Of Innovation: Exploring The Importance Of Civilizational Heritage In The 21st Century, Bibi Pelić, Ulrike Michel-Schneider
Civilizational Heritage In The Age Of Innovation: Exploring The Importance Of Civilizational Heritage In The 21st Century, Bibi Pelić, Ulrike Michel-Schneider
Comparative Civilizations Review
‘What has civilizational heritage to do with innovation?’ you may ask. ‘I just got the latest iPhone and don’t see any connection.’ You would not be the only one to ask this question.
If we backtrack a thousand years or so and look at innovations from the past, such as the Via Appia or the Colosseum, did the Romans think about civilizational heritage when they built these two magnificent structures? Did they care about civilizational heritage? What about the ancient Egyptians whose building innovation, ‘the pyramid,’ is still an enigma for us today?
Innovation is thus nothing new, but it …
Physicochemical Technique In Municipal Solid Waste (Msw) Landfill Leachate Remediation: A Review, Hamidi Abdul Aziz, Siti Fatihah Ramli, Yung-Tse Hung
Physicochemical Technique In Municipal Solid Waste (Msw) Landfill Leachate Remediation: A Review, Hamidi Abdul Aziz, Siti Fatihah Ramli, Yung-Tse Hung
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
Leachate generation is among the main challenging issues that landfill operators must handle. Leachate is created when decomposed materials and rainwater pass through the waste. Leachate carries many harmful pollutants, with high concentrations of BOD, COD, colour, heavy metals, ammoniacal nitrogen (NH3-N), and other organic and inorganic pollutants. Among them, COD, colour, and NH3-N are difficult to be completely eliminated, especially with a single treatment. They should be handled by appropriate treatment facilities before being safely released into the environment. Leachate remediation varies based on its properties, the costs of operation and capital expenditures, as well as the rules and …
Medical Device-Related Pressure Injury (Mdrpi) Prevention In The Intensive Care Unit (Icu): An Evidence Based Practice Quality Improvement Project, Sana Shah
DNP Projects
Introduction: All intensive care unit (ICU) patients utilize various medical devices for care and treatment, placing them at high-risk for medical device-related pressure injuries (MDRPIs), which can lead to life-threatening infections, wounds/scars, and consumption of additional time and products to rectify these issues. Lack of appropriate decompression measures and improper bedside handoff report was recognized in the ICU at a hospital in Connecticut (CT).
Method: A literature search using CINAHL, MEDLINE, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews was conducted, restricting the search to the period between 2018-2022. The keywords searched were: “pressure injuries,” “adult patients,” “intensive care …
Trust Alteration And The Dead Hand Paradox, Jeffrey N. Pennell, Reid Kress Weisbord
Trust Alteration And The Dead Hand Paradox, Jeffrey N. Pennell, Reid Kress Weisbord
ACTEC Law Journal
Trusts are popular instruments for wealth transmission because they can be crafted to suit almost any imaginable estate planning goal that is not contrary to public policy. With the abrogation of the Rule Against Perpetuities in most states, settlors may impose trust terms that will be legally enforceable for scores of future generations, if not in perpetuity. Long-term and perpetual trusts, however, present a paradox of dead hand control, because the specificity and the durability of settlor-imposed restrictions tend to be inversely related. As donative preferences become increasingly specific and restrictive, trusts become less durable with the passage of time, …

Faculty Readiness And Learning Needs For Incorporating Virtual Healthcare Into The Curriculum, Kelley Connor, Jason Blomquist, Darci Mccall, Cara Gallegos, Janet Reis
Nursing Faculty Publications and Presentations
Objective: Virtual healthcare technologies are becoming increasingly acceptable and available to patients and providers to deliver care. Although common in practice settings, many nursing schools have not integrated virtual care concepts into the curriculum. One reason may be because faculty are not prepared to teach these concepts. The purpose of this study was to assess the virtual healthcare learning needs of faculty.
Methods: An exploratory, descriptive study design was used to evaluate faculty receptiveness and readiness to teach virtual nursing care concepts. Thirty-seven full time faculty members were asked to complete an anonymous survey consisting of demographic, open-ended, and Likert …

Autism is a lifelong, genetic disorder that creates communication challenges, including social-emotional reciprocity, nonverbal communicative behavior deficits, and relationship struggles; restricted or repetitive behavior patterns and interests; and sensitivity to sensory inputs.1 This disorder presents a range of conditions, known as the autism spectrum, which spans from “low-functioning” individuals, who have significant speech challenges, to “high-functioning” individuals, who can communicate but have other social and behavioral challenges; high-functioning autism has traditionally been called Asperger’s syndrome. This disorder has become more of a mainstream topic, with television shows and movies, such as The Good Doctor and Rainman, depicting characters on …

A Case Of T-Cell Large Granulocyte Lymphocytic Leukemia In Rheumatoid Arthritis, Ciji Robinson, Sruthi Ramanan, Harjinder Singh, Jasdeep S. Minhas, Hazem Zebda
Rheumatology Articles
T-cell large granulocyte lymphocytic (TLGL) leukemia is a lymphoproliferative disorder involving clonal expansion of cytotoxic T-cells and subsequent cytopenia, most notably neutropenia, as well as splenomegaly. TLGL leukemia is commonly associated with autoimmune disorders, most commonly rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We present a case of a 54-year-old female with a past medical history of seropositive RA who was lost to follow-up and thus was not on any active treatment for RA for several years. She returned to the clinic with worsening joint pain, swelling, and stiffness involving multiple joints. Screen laboratory work revealed an absolute neutrophil count (ANC) of 0.19 K/uL, …

Dredged Sediments Contain Potentially Beneficial Microorganisms For Agriculture And Little Harmful Cyanobacteria, Megan A. Rúa, Ashley N. Julian, Louise Stevenson
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Abstract Introduction Soils worldwide are degrading, raising concerns about our ability to feed the growing global population. Soil amendments that can alleviate degradation are gaining attention. The application of sediments dredged from waterways to agricultural fields has increasing promise as a means for improving degraded soils. However, herbaceous plant species may have difficulty establishing on dredged material because of low nutrient availability, inhibitory levels of toxins, unsuitable moisture conditions and lack of microorganisms capable of ameliorating these characteristics. To counteract these issues, we sought to understand if the use of a cover crop would increase the abundance, diversity and function …
