Barriers Of Iucd Uptake Among Sexually Active Nulliparous University Students In Dar Es Salaam Tanzania, Fatma Shaib Mohamed

Master of Medicine in Family Medicine

Background Family planning contributes an important role in prevention of unintended pregnancy, unsafe abortion, maternal and child mortality. One of the methods used is an IUCD that help in preventing unintended pregnancy. Un intended pregnancy is a public he alth concern worldwide among younger women, resulting into unsafe abortion. Preventing unintended pregnancies in youth is crucial yet challenging. Few studies have addressed the problem of the low utilization of IUCD among university students. This group is overwhelmed with physiological, social, and economic issues in relation to reproductive health especially on family planning accessibility and use. Gap of knowledge and skills …

A Century Of Critical Buddhism In Japan, James Mark Shields Mar 2023

A Century Of Critical Buddhism In Japan, James Mark Shields

Faculty Contributions to Books

This chapter introduces the central arguments of Critical Buddhism as a lens by which to view the course of “modern” Buddhism in Japan, particularly as it relates to politics. It traces philosophical and political precedents for Critical Buddhism in the context of Japanese modernity, by focusing on several progressive Buddhist figures movements from mid-Meiji through early Shōwa, including the New Buddhist Fellowship and the Youth League for Revitalizing Buddhism. I argue that previous attempts to centralize criticism as a basic Buddhist precept were unsuccessful in part do to an inability to distinguish the Buddhistic components of their thought and practice, …

Application Of Multiphase Ct Angiography In Acute Ischemic Stroke, Salman Mansoor Mar 2023

Application Of Multiphase Ct Angiography In Acute Ischemic Stroke, Salman Mansoor

Pakistan Journal of Neurological Sciences (PJNS)

This article explores the use of multiphase CT angiography (CTA) as a valuable tool in acute stroke management. Unlike traditional imaging methods, multiphase CTA provides a more comprehensive view of the neurovascular system and can detect occlusions and aid in treatment decision-making. Recent studies have shown that multiphase CTA has high accuracy in identifying patients who are suitable for endovascular treatment. Furthermore, it has also been used to visualize intracranial aneurysms and track the development of collateral circulation during and after treatment. Despite concerns regarding radiation exposure and image interpretation, multiphase CTA remains an essential imaging modality in the management …

French Tort Law Reform: A Rapprochement To Other Legal Systems?, Dimitra Tsiaklagkanou Mar 2023

French Tort Law Reform: A Rapprochement To Other Legal Systems?, Dimitra Tsiaklagkanou

Journal of International Business and Law

The revision of French tort law is proving to be a long process, starting with a first draft by the working group directed by Pierre Catala and Geneviève Viney in 2005, and only reaching a proposed new law tabled by Senators in 2020. The need for revision arose due to the silence of the current French Civil Code on tortious liability, which was mainly developed over the last two centuries by the jurisprudence, while only five such articles can be found. The intended revision of French tort law looks beyond the codification of jurisprudential solutions and towards legal innovations. This …

A Single-Cell Gene Expression Atlas Of Human Follicular Aspirates: Identification Of Leukocyte Subpopulations And Their Paracrine Factors, Yohan Choi, Hayce Jeon, Mats Brännström, James W. Akin, Thomas E. Curry, Misung Jo

UK CARES Faculty Publications

Leukocytes are in situ regulators critical for ovarian function. However, little is known about leukocyte subpopulations and their interaction with follicular cells in ovulatory follicles, especially in humans. Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA- seq) was performed using follicular aspirates obtained from four IVF patients and identified 13 cell groups: one granulosa cell group, one thecal cell group, 10 subsets of leukocytes, and one group of RBC/platelet. RNA velocity analyses on five granulosa cell populations predicted developmental dynamics denoting two projections of differentiation states. The cell type-specific transcriptomic profiling analyses revealed the presence of a diverse array of leukocyte-derived factors that can …

Effect Of Lifestyle-Based Lipid Lowering Interventions On The Relationship Between Circulating Levels Of Per-And Polyfluoroalkyl Substances And Serum Cholesterol, Stephanie Morgan, M. Abdul Mottaleb, Maria P. Kraemer, Debra K. Moser, Jessica Worley, Andrew J. Morris, Michael C. Petriello Mar 2023

Effect Of Lifestyle-Based Lipid Lowering Interventions On The Relationship Between Circulating Levels Of Per-And Polyfluoroalkyl Substances And Serum Cholesterol, Stephanie Morgan, M. Abdul Mottaleb, Maria P. Kraemer, Debra K. Moser, Jessica Worley, Andrew J. Morris, Michael C. Petriello

UK CARES Faculty Publications

Exposure to certain per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) has been shown to be positively associated with total and/or low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Examining this association in lipid lowering interventions may provide additional evidence linking PFAS to cardiovascular risk. We examined the relationship of 6 PFAS with cholesterol in a 6-month lifestyle-based intervention. We quantitated PFAS in 350 individuals at baseline and post intervention and examined associations of PFAS with cholesterol before and after intervention. Food frequency questionnaires and GIS analyses were used to investigate PFAS hotspots and possible exposure routes. Cholesterol significantly decreased following intervention and in parallel, PFOS, PFOA, PFHxS, and …

Impact Of In Utero Drug Exposure On Neonates Requiring Ecmo: A Retrospective Cohort Study, Hallie Walther, Aric Schadler, Karen Garlitz, John Anthony Bauer, Lindsay Kohler, Erika Waldsmith, Hubert O. Ballard

UK CARES Faculty Publications

The incidence of in utero drug exposure (IUDE) and neonatal extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) utilization have both increased over the past decade. However, there are no studies to date that examine the impact that IUDE has on neonates requiring ECMO. In this retrospective cohort study, we compared the clinic course and outcomes of neonates who were placed on ECMO with IUDE vs. neonates without IUDE. Analysis included data extracted from medical records from all neonatal ECMO runs between January 2014 and January 2021 at the University of Kentucky Children’s Hospital. A total of 56 neonatal patients were placed on ECMO …

Experiences Of Diverse Health Care Workers’ Providing Maternal Care During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Qualitative Study At Five Hospitals In Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania., Fatma Zahran

Master of Family Medicine

Background There are drastic changes in patient care with respect to maternity due to the COVID-19 pandemic with negative impact to health care workers. With Interruption of everyday basic services, arose the need to redistribute the scanty health care workers across health care facilities in sub-Saharan Africa. Its effects and involvement on maternity practice in Sub-Saharan Africa are nevertheless to be analyzed. This study aims to explore the likely ramifications for obstetrics and gynecologic practice in Tanzania. At present there are limited studies looking at impacts of COVID-19 in sub-Saharan Africa and Tanzania. No study has been carried out to …

The Money War: Democracy, Taxes And Inflation In The U.S. Civil War, Ariel Ron, Sofia Valeonti Mar 2023

The Money War: Democracy, Taxes And Inflation In The U.S. Civil War, Ariel Ron, Sofia Valeonti

History Faculty Publications

Both sides in the U.S. Civil War financed military spending by issuing new fiat currencies. The Union ‘greenback’ underwent moderate inflation (by wartime standards), but the Confederate ‘greyback’ suffered hyperinflation. Existing explanations for these price movements typically treat only one of the two cases and adopt either a quantity theory or rational expectations approach. We compare Union and Confederate policies directly and highlight the importance of taxation for assuring the value of inconvertible money. Combining monetary and fiscal history literatures, we find that tax policies were determined by long-term development of democratic governing institutions. Higher levels of democracy in the …

An Historic Analysis Of The Operation Of A Truancy Court Conducted In An Urban Middle School, Lisa Gray Mar 2023

An Historic Analysis Of The Operation Of A Truancy Court Conducted In An Urban Middle School, Lisa Gray

Dissertations

Truancy is a concern that most school districts around the country are familiar with. This study was to examine the development of a truancy court established in an effort to conquer this problem. There were several school districts, from inner city to rural, that believed truancy courts helped to reduce attendance issues. Data were collected and assessed from the observations of the existing truancy courts. It was determined from the data that truancy courts were only productive if the judge had the support from the parents. Some were repeat offenders, whereas some just needed a little guidance to get back …
