Faculty Research 2023

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by synaptic loss, which can result from dysfunctional microglial phagocytosis and complement activation. However, what signals drive aberrant microglia-mediated engulfment of synapses in AD is unclear. Here we report that secreted phosphoprotein 1 (SPP1/osteopontin) is upregulated predominantly by perivascular macrophages and, to a lesser extent, by perivascular fibroblasts. Perivascular SPP1 is required for microglia to engulf synapses and upregulate phagocytic markers including C1qa, Grn and Ctsb in presence of amyloid-β oligomers. Absence of Spp1 expression in AD mouse models results in prevention of synaptic loss. Furthermore, single-cell RNA sequencing and putative cell-cell interaction analyses reveal …

The Stewardship Model Of Necessity, Joseph Graziano Mar 2023

The Stewardship Model Of Necessity, Joseph Graziano

Notre Dame Law Review

The current understanding of the necessity defense to trespass to property in American law stems from a simple—or perhaps simplistic—balancing of rights. Based in the individualistic understanding of property as a right against the world that creates an obligation for others, necessity pits the interloper’s right to life, liberty, or property against the property owner’s right. Although feasible in the extremes, dueling rights leads to an unwieldy judicial task, discouraging advocates from alleging the privilege and discouraging judges from recognizing the privilege. Overall, the right to exclude has become more and more the libertarian vision of a right to be …

A Prophylactic Approach To Compact Constitutionality, Katherine Mims Crocker Mar 2023

A Prophylactic Approach To Compact Constitutionality, Katherine Mims Crocker

Notre Dame Law Review

From COVID-19 to climate change, immigration to health insurance, firearms control to electoral reform: state politicians have sought to address all these hot-button issues by joining forces with other states. The U.S. Constitution, however, forbids states to “enter into any Agreement or Compact” with each other “without the Consent of Congress,” a requirement that proponents of much interstate action, especially around controversial topics, would hope to circumvent.

The Supreme Court lets them do just that. By interpreting “any Agreement or Compact” so narrowly that it is difficult to see what besides otherwise unlawful coordination qualifies, the Court has essentially read …

Implementation Of A Daily Spontaneous Breathing Trial Protocol, Berenice Monarez Mar 2023

Implementation Of A Daily Spontaneous Breathing Trial Protocol, Berenice Monarez

Cohort XI

Patients in the intensive care unit who require endotracheal intubation are at higher risk of further complications and increased mortality. Inconsistent spontaneous awakening trials (SAT) and spontaneous breathing trials (SBT), mechanical ventilation weaning strategies, and interdisciplinary rounding processes contribute to prolonged mechanical ventilation duration and length of stay in intensive care. The (Robertson et al., 2008) study found utilization of an evidence-based protocol for endotracheally intubated patients will decrease days that a patient requires mechanical ventilation. Daily spontaneous-breathing trials (SBTs) are proclaimed as the best method for assessing readiness for discontinuation of mechanical ventilation. SBT protocols have also been shown …

The Scope Of Compelling Government Interests, R. George Wright Mar 2023

The Scope Of Compelling Government Interests, R. George Wright

Notre Dame Law Review Reflection

In constitutional cases, any relevant government interest may be said to vary in its breadth or scope. Government interests can be characterized narrowly or broadly. The narrowness or breadth of how courts choose to formulate a government interest may well affect that interest’s overall weight or legal significance. For example, a public interest in safety and security, broadly conceived, may seem compelling. But the public interest in merely some modest upgrading of a safety and security regulation may seem less than compelling. A court might adopt either description. A court’s choice to characterize the government interest at stake as either …

Addressing Plastic Pollution Through Green Consumption: Predicting Intentions To Use Menstrual Cups In The Philippines, Alvin Patrick M. Valentin, Ma. Regina Hechanova-Alampay

Quantitative Methods and Information Technology Faculty Publications

Plastic pollution is a global environmental crisis that poses a huge threat to the health of people and marine ecosystems worldwide. A significant source of plastic pollution is menstrual hygiene management, and an approach that can help address this crisis is the usage of washable and reusable menstrual cups. Using an extended theory of planned behavior model that includes self-identity and perceived quality, the study predicted intentions to use menstrual cups in the Philippines. Structural equation modeling results showed that perceived quality predicted attitudes towards menstrual cup usage. Moreover, attitudes, perceived behavioral control, and self-identity predicted intentions to use menstrual …

Spontaneous Resolution Of Traumatic Bronchial Tear After Thoracic Crush Injury, Erik Schwarze, Donald D. Chang, Corbin J. Cleary, Ilya Rakitin Mar 2023

Spontaneous Resolution Of Traumatic Bronchial Tear After Thoracic Crush Injury, Erik Schwarze, Donald D. Chang, Corbin J. Cleary, Ilya Rakitin

Surgery Articles

Traumatic bronchial tears are rare life-threatening injuries. Here, we report a 28-year old male who presented after sustaining a crush injury to his thoracic cavity, resulting in a spiral left mainstem bronchial tear secondary to high intraluminal pressure. While preparing for surgery, a preoperative bronchoscopy found that the bronchial tear had re-approximated and effectively sealed the laceration. No operative intervention was performed and the patient subsequently underwent a full recovery. While most bronchial tears undergo surgical intervention, our report describes the successful management of a bronchial tear injury with a non-operative approach and supportive care.

Prediction Of Strawberry Yield Based On Receptacle Detection And Bayesian Inference, Sunghyun Yoon, Jung Su Jo, Steven B. Kim, Ha Seon Sim, Sung Kyeom Kim, Dong Sub Kim

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The receptacle of strawberry is a more direct part than the flower for predicting yield as they eventually become fruits. Thus, we tried to predict the yield by combining an AI technique for receptacle detection in images and statistical analysis on the relationship between the number of receptacles detected and the strawberry yield over a period of time. Five major cultivars were cultivated to consider the cultivar characteristics and environmental factors for two years were collected to consider the climate difference. Faster R–CNN based object detector was used to estimate the number of receptacles per strawberry plant in given two-dimensional …
