Child Abuse In Residential Homes Of Ghana, Alyssa Minor
Child Abuse In Residential Homes Of Ghana, Alyssa Minor
Ballard Brief
Children placed in residential homes in Ghana suffer from physical violence and physical neglect more often than children in family-based homes. In overcrowded residential homes, many basic needs are often not being met, and the use of physical violence is common due to inadequate funding, lack of training, lack of clear policies, and years of normalizing violent disciplinary actions. This problem of child abuse within residential homes of Ghana creates financial burdens on the country and negative psychosocial effects for children suffering from neglect or physical violence, hindering their ability to reach their full earnings potential. Very few interventions have …

Predicting Mobility Using Limited Data During Early Stages Of A Pandemic, Michael T. Lash, S. Sajeesh, Özgür M. Araz
Department of Marketing: Faculty Publications
The COVID-19 pandemic has changed consumer behavior substantially. In this study, we explore the drivers of consumer mobility in several metropolitan areas in the United States under the perceived risks of COVID-19. We capture multiple dimensions of perceived risk using local and national cases and death counts of COVID-19, along with real-time Google Trends data for personal protective equipment (PPE). While Google Trends data are popular inputs in many studies, the risk of multicollinearity escalates with the addition of more relevant terms. Therefore, multicollinearity-alleviating methods are needed to appropriately leverage information provided by Google Trends data. We develop and utilize …
Virtual Training In Child Welfare, Penny Putnam Collins
Virtual Training In Child Welfare, Penny Putnam Collins
QIC-Takes
Child welfare offices and training centers had to transition their classroom instructor-led training to virtual platforms when the pandemic hit. Some training systems were already using virtual platforms or asynchronous learning tools to deliver training content, but no agency was 100% virtual pre-pandemic. The transition was sudden and there was a steep learning curve for some trainers. Changes made when the pandemic hit may now be the new normal. This QICTake highlights what our QIC-WD sites and team members experienced as child welfare agencies shifted to, and are now embracing, virtual training. What We’re Seeing Finding the Right Tools for …

#Blackatuark: Digital Counterpublic Memories Of Anti-Black Racism On Campus, T. Jake Dionne, Joe Hatfield, Gabrielle Willingham
Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations
After #BlackLivesMatter protests in summer 2020, many leaders in the US South reevaluated monuments dedicated to the confederate and segregation eras. Black affiliates of the University of Arkansas used the Twitter hashtag #BlackatUARK to demand the removal of memorials commemorating a segregationist senator and share their experiences of anti-Black racism on campus. We argue that #BlackatUARK provides a counterpublic memorial of campus life that opposes and transforms dominant public memories, geographies, and subjectivities. Our analysis of the hashtag expands the conceptual boundaries of the kairos/metanoia partnership to show how digital counterpublic memories gain momentum and produce tangible rhetorical effects across …

Systematic Review Of Ct Angiography In Guiding Management In Pediatric Oropharyngeal Trauma., Steven D Curry, Dallin N Christensen, Pooja M Varman, Kimberly A Harp, Dwight T Jones
Journal Articles: Leon S. McGoogan Health Sciences Library
OBJECTIVES: Pediatric oropharyngeal trauma is common. Although most cases resolve uneventfully, there have been reports of internal carotid artery injury leading to devastating neurovascular sequelae. There is significant controversy regarding the utility of CT angiography (CTA) in children with seemingly minor oropharyngeal trauma. The goal of this study was to appraise changes in diagnosis and treatment based on CTA results.
METHODS: A comprehensive search of PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Scopus, the Cochrane Ear, Nose and Throat Disorders Group Trials Register, and the ClinicalTrials.gov database was performed following PRISMA guidelines.
RESULTS: The search yielded 5,078 unique abstracts, of which 8 articles were …

Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP) is a major concern for people with epilepsy, their families, their care givers, and medical professionals. There is inconsistency in the SUDEP counselling doctors provide, compared to what is recommended in clinical guidelines. Numerous national and international surveys have highlighted how epilepsy professionals, usually doctors, deliver SUDEP risk counselling, particularly, when they deliver it and to whom. These surveys help understand the unmet need, develop suitable strategies, and raise awareness among clinicians with the eventual goal to reduce SUDEPs. However, there is no standardised survey or essential set of questions identified that can be …

Nonmagnetic Negative Refractive Index Media Based On Chalcogenide Glasses, N. Boutabba
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
We report in this work the study of the permittivity and the losses in non-linear nonmagnetic negative refractive index media. We analyze the permittivity and the losses dependence on the inclusion number of the particles used in the suggested media that is made by interlacing plasmonic metallic particles and a dielectric. We show that the exhibition of a negative permittivity in these strongly anisotropic media depends not only on the inclusion number of the particles and the frequency range but also on the oscillation frequency of free electrons in the metal which plays the major role. We finally suggest the …

A Preliminary Volterra Lotka Model Analysing Cancer, Intracellular Parasite, And Immune Cells Interaction, Nadia Boutabba, Gehan Abuelenain
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
In this paper, we investigate the dynamics of immune and tumor cell densities in the presence of a parasite using the prey- predator Volterra-Lotka model in a biological system, assuming that the parasite is either a down or up-regulator of the induced immune cells. Thus, we analysed the model for equal and non equal initial conditions and report their impact on the populations growth.

Ola Distribution: A New One Parameter Model With Applications To Engineering And Covid-19 Data, Ola Al-Ta’Ani, Mohammed M. Gharaibeh
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
We employed the notion of mixture distributions to suggest a new one parameter continuous distribution for modeling real lifetime data called Ola Distribution. Its properties are explored including moments and related measures, moment generating function, reliability analysis functions, order statistics, Bonferroni and Lorenz curves, stochastic ordering, Re ́nyi entropy and mean deviations. The maximum likelihood method is adapted to estimate the parameter of the distribution. Applications to engineering and COVID- 19 data sets are presented to illustrate the usefulness of the suggested distribution. The applications showed that Ola distribution outperforms some competitive distributions and can be considered as a useful …

Predictive Analysis Of Misuse Of Alcohol And Drugs Using Machine Learning Algorithms: The Case Of Using An Imbalanced Dataset From South Africa, Alexander Boateng, Christopher Odoom, Eric Teye Mensah, Sarah Mensah Fobi, Daniel Maposa
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
Drug and alcohol misuse has become a significant global distraction to the development of the youths and future leaders, especially in South Africa. The ideal solution to these unhealthy practices is for institutions, governments, and individuals to put preventive measures such as counselling, sanctions, and fines to help control drug and alcohol misuse. However, it is challenging to know the group of people or individuals engaged in such deteriorating activities by merely monitoring individuals physically. It makes it difficult even to plan the measures to control the issue. Therefore this paper has applied and compared six supervised machine learning algorithms …

On The Robustness Of Right Truncated Esscher Transformed Laplace Distribution, K. Krishnakumari, D. George
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
Truncation arises in many practical situations such as Epidemiology, Material science, Psychology, Social Sciences and Statistics where one wants to study about data which lie above or below a certain threshold or within a specified range. Right truncation often happens when an event/source is detected if its measurement is less than a truncation variable. The present study aims to introduce a right truncated version of an asymmetric and heavy tailed distribution namely, Esscher transformed Laplace distribution beyond the interval (−∞,b). Various distributional and reliability properties of the proposed distribution are investigated. The performance of η, the parameter, is estimated using …

ROSA Research Briefs
A post-National Day Rally survey conducted in August 2022 found that the rising cost of living and health-related issues were ranked among the top concerns of Singaporeans (Baharudin, 2022). This comes as no surprise as global crises such as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the Russo-Ukrainian conflict, has resulted in global and domestic inflation (Gov.sg, 2022). In May 2022, Singapore reported a 13-year high core inflation of 3.6% (Channel News Asia, 2022), while in September 2022, Singapore’s core inflation had risen to 5.3% (Ang, 2022). Additionally, the government announced that Singapore residents will see a goods and services tax (GST) …

At the mid-point of this three-year pilot project, the evidence suggests that the Mobile Rural Law Van is accomplishing its primary objective of better meeting the needs of people in rural Wellington County and North Halton. Is the success after two summers and one winter of operation sustainable? Sustainability is about more than just money, more than cost and about cost per person served. Sustainability depends on how the project operates and how it is connected with the community being served. This paper identifies the non-monetary factors that make the Law Van project sustainable, suggesting adjustments that might be made …

Effect Of Xylitol Versus Sugar On Caries Risk, Alyssa Birmingham, Kailey Hart, Raissa Igihozo, Amanda Osmolski
Dental Hygiene Student Research Posters
The effect of xylitol versus sugar on caries risk is a rising trend in caries prevention. The dominant explanation for this trend is explained by xylitol’s ability to significantly decrease caries rates in recent studies. To answer the question, in adult patients, what is the effect of xylitol versus sugar on caries risk, we compared previous studies in a literature review. The limitations of these findings include the many intrinsic and extrinsic factors that influence plaque accumulation that were not considered. Further research is needed to determine if xylitol alone has caries-prevention qualities.
