In this issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Kokkinos et al5 studied the relationship of both a single CRF value, and change in CRF, with all-cause mortality in a large (n 1⁄4 93,060) sample from the ETHOS (Exercise Testing and Health Outcomes Study) cohort. In this cohort, CRF was estimated as the peak metabolic equivalents (METs) derived from the peak speed and grade obtained on a treadmill exercise test. The findings from the single measure of CRF showed, compared with the low-CRF group (w5 METs), reductions in mortality rate across each higher-CRF group in both those …

Effect Of Xylitol Versus Sugar On Caries Risk, Alyssa Birmingham, Kailey Hart, Raissa Igihozo, Amanda Osmolski Mar 2023

Effect Of Xylitol Versus Sugar On Caries Risk, Alyssa Birmingham, Kailey Hart, Raissa Igihozo, Amanda Osmolski

Dental Hygiene Student Research Posters

The effect of xylitol versus sugar on caries risk is a rising trend in caries prevention. The dominant explanation for this trend is explained by xylitol’s ability to significantly decrease caries rates in recent studies. To answer the question, in adult patients, what is the effect of xylitol versus sugar on caries risk, we compared previous studies in a literature review. The limitations of these findings include the many intrinsic and extrinsic factors that influence plaque accumulation that were not considered. Further research is needed to determine if xylitol alone has caries-prevention qualities.

Estimating The Prevalence Of Two Or More Diseases Using Outcomes From Multiplex Group Testing, Md S. Warasi, Joshua M. Tebbs, Christopher S. Mcmahan, Christopher R. Bilder

Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications

When screening a population for infectious diseases, pooling individual specimens (e.g., blood, swabs, urine, etc.) can provide enormous cost savings when compared to testing specimens individually. In the biostatistics literature, testing pools of specimens is commonly known as group testing or pooled testing. Although estimating a population-level prevalence with group testing data has received a large amount of attention, most of this work has focused on applications involving a single disease, such as human immunodeficiency virus. Modern methods of screening now involve testing pools and individuals for multiple diseases simultaneously through the use of multiplex assays. Hou et al. (2017, …

Penguins Go Parallel: A Grammar Of Graphics Framework For Generalized Parallel Coordinate Plots, Susan Vanderplas, Yawei Ge, Antony Unwin, Heike Hofmann

Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications

Parallel Coordinate Plots (PCP) are a valuable tool for exploratory data analysis of high-dimensional numerical data. The use of PCPs is limited when working with categorical variables or a mix of categorical and continuous variables. In this article, we propose Generalized Parallel Coordinate Plots (GPCP) to extend the ability of PCPs from just numeric variables to dealing seamlessly with a mix of categorical and numeric variables in a single plot. In this process we find that existing solutions for categorical values only, such as hammock plots or parsets become edge cases in the new framework. By focusing on individual observations …

Extension Publications

Global food shortages are caused mainly by drought, the primary driver of yield loss in agriculture worldwide. Drought stress negatively impacts the physiological and morphological characteristics of rice (Oryza sativa L.), limiting the plant productivity and hence the economy of global rice production. Physiological changes due to drought stress in rice include constrained cell division and elongation, stomatal closure, loss of turgor adjustment, reduced photosynthesis, and lower yields. Morphological changes include inhibition of seed germination, reduced tillers, early maturity, and reduced biomass. In addition, drought stress leads to a metabolic alteration by increasing the buildup of …

A New Normal Regression With Medical Applications, Nicollas S. S Da Costa, Gauss M. Cordeiro

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

We define the generalized odd log-logistic normal regression with a dispersion systematic component. We obtain a linear representation, some of its properties, and maximum likelihood estimates. Furthermore, we carry out several simulations for different schemes to evaluate the accuracy of the estimators. The robustness of the new regression model is proved by modeling COVID-19 data. The proposed model explains COVID-19 ICU survival times of the patients in a Brazilian hospital.

PURPOSE: To conduct a cost-effectiveness study of nonsurgical and surgical treatment options for distal radius fractures using distinct posttreatment outcome patterns.

METHODS: We created a decision tree to model the following treatment modalities for distal radius fractures: nonsurgical management, external fixation, percutaneous pinning, and plate fixation. Each node of the model was associated with specific costs in dollars, a utility adjustment (quality-adjusted life year [QALY]), and a percent likelihood. The nodes of the decision tree included uneventful healing, eventful healing and no further intervention, carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, and tendon rupture as well as associated treatments for each event. …

The cell-penetrating peptide (CPP) penetratin (PEN) has garnered attention for its potential to enter tumor cells. However, its translocation mechanism and lack of selectivity remain debated. This study investigated PEN’s insertion into healthy cells (H-) and cancer cells (C-) using micromolar concentrations and various techniques. Raman spectroscopy was used to determine PEN’s location in the lipid bilayer at different lipid-to-peptide ratios. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) and zeta potential analysis were used to measure the lipid–PEN complex’s size and charge. The results showed helical PEN particles directly inserted into C- membranes at a ratio of 110, while aggregated particles stayed on …

A Satellite-Based Monitoring System For Quantifying Surface Water And Mesic Vegetation Dynamics In A Semi-Arid Region, N. E. Kolarik, A. Roopsind, A. Pickens, J. S. Brandt

Human-Environment Systems Research Center Faculty Publications and Presentations

Semi-arid and arid systems cover one third of the earth’s land surface, and are becoming increasingly drier, but existing datasets do not capture all of the types of water resources that sustain these systems. In semi-arid environments, small surface water bodies and areas of mesic vegetation (wetlands, wet meadows, riparian zones) function as critical water resources. However, the most commonly-used maps of water resources are derived from the Landsat time series or single date aerial photographs, and are too coarse either spatially or temporally to effectively monitor water resource dynamics. In this study, we produced a Sentinel Fusion (SF) water …
