A Review Of The Efficacy Of Popular Eye Cream Ingredients, Hanin Hamie, Reem Yassine, Rajaa Shoukfeh, Dilara Turk, Farhan Huq, Meena Moossavi

Medical Student Research Symposium

Every year, there are new products on the market advertised to preserve a youthful appearance and reduce the signs of aging. One classic example is eye cream. Due to the periorbital region’s high susceptibility to damage from external factors, along with its tendency to demonstrate early signs of aging, periorbital skin is a common target for anti-aging therapy. While some of these ingredients have proven efficacious in clinical trials, others have not shown to be clinically significant. Various products contain different combinations, formulations, and doses of these ingredients. This review evaluates the efficacy of popular topical ingredients found in common …

Assessing Post-Operative Complications In Pediatric Cochlear Implant Surgery, Nina Brahmbhatt, Andrew Stefan Md, Bianca Siegel Md

Medical Student Research Symposium

Cochlear implantation (CI) surgery is the standard of care treatment for pediatric patients diagnosed with severe-to-profound sensorineural hearing loss. There is compelling evidence that supports the use of CIs to improve hearing, language comprehension, and speech development significantly in children of all ages. While the operation is considered relatively safe, invasive procedures involving the skull can put patients at risk of adverse events.

This study aims to help pediatric otolaryngologists identify high risk patients and take preventative measures to ensure minimal complications.

The specific objectives include the following:

1) To determine the incidence of postoperative complications in pediatric patients undergoing …

Role Of Intraflagellar Transport Protein Ift20 In The Formation And Function Of Motile Cilia In Mammals, Mohammad Z. Abdulghani, Wei Li, Tao Li, Michael J. Holtzman, Gregory J. Pazour, Zhibing Zhang

Medical Student Research Symposium

Cilia are microtubular structures present on most mammalian cells, which can be categorized into motile cilia and primary cilia (non-motile cilia). The axoneme of both cilia types possess intraflagellar transport (IFT) machinery, composed of unique protein complexes that travel in opposite directions along the microtubules. Although the role of IFT in primary cilia formation has been well studied, little is known about its role in mammalian motile cilia assembly. IFT20 is a component of IFT-B complex. We generated conditional Ift20 knockout mice by crossing floxed Ift20 mice with the Foxj1-Cre transgenic mouse line to specifically delete Ift20 from motile cilia. …

An Educational Intervention Differentiating Pressure Injuries From End-Of-Life Wounds, Alicia Perez Varela, Annette Callis Mar 2024

An Educational Intervention Differentiating Pressure Injuries From End-Of-Life Wounds, Alicia Perez Varela, Annette Callis

Providence Nursing Research Conference 2023 – Present

Background

End-of-life (EOL) wounds are identified in the literature as Kennedy Terminal Ulcers (KTU), Skin Failure (SF), Trombley-Brennan Terminal Tissue Injury (TB-TTI), and SCALE (Skin Changes at Life’s End). EOL wounds have a similar appearance to pressure injuries (PIs) with a fundamentally different etiology. The misclassification of EOL wounds as PIs results in increased Hospital Acquired Pressure Injuries (HAPI), hospital fines, and less-than-optimal EOL wound management.

Purpose

To examine the effectiveness of an educational intervention on EOL wounds in increasing nurse confidence in providing End-of-Life Care (EOLC) and differentiating PIs from EOL wounds.

Methods

This quasi-experimental study used the 28-item …

Management Of Sepsis With The Quick Sequential Organ Failure Assessment, Jeanna Adams Mar 2024

Management Of Sepsis With The Quick Sequential Organ Failure Assessment, Jeanna Adams

Providence Nursing Research Conference 2023 – Present

Abstract

Background:

Sepsis can be a source of morbidity and mortality particularly when there are delays in treatment. Early identification may improve time to antimicrobial administration. The quick Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (qSOFA) is an evidence-based practice screening tool that, when in used in conjunction with the Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS) criteria can enhance recognition and treatment of sepsis. On a suburban Southern California hospital Neurological/Telemetry Unit the qSOFA is automatically calculated in the electronic medical record (EMR) but the bedside nurses were unaware of its availability and value. In addition, sepsis was not being identified in a timely …

Fall Prevention Quality Initiative: Implementation Of Fall Ambassador Safety Team (Fast), Jerome Codilla, Joanna Arraiza

Providence Nursing Research Conference 2023 – Present

Background

Patient falls are the most common adverse events reported in hospitals and represent a persistent patient safety issue. Annually, roughly 700,000 to 1 million patient falls occur in United States hospitals, resulting in around 250,000 injuries and up to 11,000 deaths (LeLaurin et al., 2019). Nurses are responsible for the identification of high fall risk patients and development of a plan of care to minimize risk. Multifactorial strategies have been shown to reduce falls, but evidence of a sustainability team (fall champions) is lacking. Review of the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI) data on a 33-bed progressive …

Providence Nursing Research Conference 2023 – Present

Background:

Triage is the process of sorting and prioritizing patients requiring medical treatment. A primary goal is to identify high-risk or life-threatening situations. Emergency Severity Index (ESI) is a validated method to assign an acuity level from Level 1 (emergent) to Level 5 (non-urgent). ESI handbook states competency is vital to the success and accuracy of the ESI tool & requires periodic assessment of RNs participating in triage. The Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) reports only 60% accuracy in assigning acuity.

Aim:

The aim of this evidence-based practice project was to determine compliance with triage standards and provision of initial …

Using A Virtual, Case-Based Approach To Developing Clinical Competency In Hospice, Melissa Robinson, Sasha Holden, Tara Poulsen Mar 2024

Using A Virtual, Case-Based Approach To Developing Clinical Competency In Hospice, Melissa Robinson, Sasha Holden, Tara Poulsen

Providence Nursing Research Conference 2023 – Present

Background:

There has been a shift in nursing education away from a teacher-centered approach that is focused on requiring learners to memorize large amounts of content to a concept-based approach that is learner-centered and focuses on the development of critical thinking, clinical judgment, and problem-solving skills (Giddens et al., 2020). Conceptual learning requires learners to connect facts and exemplars to concepts through active learning experiences such as completing case studies or problem-solving activities (Baron, 2017). This allows learners to ‘practice’ thinking and apply new knowledge to clinical practice.

The clinical education team is applying this knowledge to the current competency-based …

Effective Non-Pharmacological Pain Relief Interventions Among Neonates: An Integrative Research Review, Staci Shaw Mar 2024

Effective Non-Pharmacological Pain Relief Interventions Among Neonates: An Integrative Research Review, Staci Shaw

Providence Nursing Research Conference 2023 – Present

Background:

Newborns encounter many painful events, including heel sticks, venous blood sampling, peripheral intravenous insertions, and more. Newborns cannot verbally express pain, and caregivers rely on changes in vital signs (increased heart rate, decreased oxygen saturations) behavior (long periods of inconsolable crying), and facial expressions to grade newborn pain. Pain management in neonates is critical to preserve neurodevelopment. Due to adverse effects of pharmacological pain management interventions in neonatal populations, non-pharmacological pain management interventions are often utilized in newborns, such as swaddling, non-nutritive sucking, kangaroo care, oral sucrose, holding, touching, music, and breastfeeding. However, the most effective pain management intervention, …

Sepsis 5 Rights Round (S5rr), William Lim, Bilma Pellissery, Jenny Carrillo

Providence Nursing Research Conference 2023 – Present

Background. Sepsis-related hospitalizations with prolonged length of stay (LOS) are rising in the US. Likewise in our setting, sepsis is the #1 diagnosis-related group (DRG). Moreover, our sepsis patient outcomes for DRG-related LOS, timely discharge, readmission rates, and observed/expected (O/E) mortality did not meet our healthcare system’s regional goals. Thus, because evidence suggests that interprofessional rounds may improve those outcomes among non-sepsis patients, we decided to add afternoon interprofessional rounds to existing morning rounds. Those Sepsis 5 Rights Rounds (S5RR) would focus on the right patient, place, time, level of care, and plan of care.

Purpose.The purpose of this …
