Journal of Critical Global Issues

China has one of the world’s oldest and largest sets of minority affirmative action policies, which provide 125 million individuals from recognized ethnic minority groups with preferences in family planning, school admissions, employment, business financing and taxation, and financial subsidies. This paper aims to examine how China implements preferential policies for ethnic minority undergraduate applicants to its higher education institutions. Policies of preferential admissions in China are designed to compensate for inequalities in educational opportunity among different ethnic groups. This compensatory approach is based on the concept that equal treatment of differently situated groups may itself create inequality. Yet preferential …

Artificial intelligence (AI) is built into many products and has the potential to dramatically impact societies around the world. This short theoretical paper aims to provide a simple framework that might help us understand how the introduction and/or use of products with AI might influence the well-being of humans. It is proposed that considering the dynamic Interplay between variables stemming from Modality, Person, Area, Culture and Transparency categories will help to understand the influence of AI on well-being. The Modality category encompasses areas such as the degree of AI being interactive, informational versus actualizing, or autonomous. The Person variable contains …

The aging global population requires a new social model to meet the growing social, economic, and physical needs of seniors. Western social models need to be reconsidered in light of examples that support communal ways of living, which are sustainable through smart city design for more supportive geriatric care systems. To address the complex problems of geriatric care in this growing aging population with specific needs related to increased lifespan and limited financial resources, the use of emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT), should be considered. As retirement ages rise and funds for …

Investing In Climate: A Role For 'Sovereign Climate Funds', Marianna Kozintseva, Thierry Wizman

Sim Kee Boon Institute for Financial Economics

Efforts to address climate change have generally been focused on deploying mitigation technologies. However, it is adaptation technologies (and climate risk transfer) that will have to gain an increasing share of an investment pool dedicated to climate if human systems are to stay resilient to climate forces. Just like mitigation projects, adaptation projects have a strong public goods aspect, wherein public returns exceed private returns, and thus call for the state’s involvement. We argue that sovereign climate funds (SCFs) - new types of sovereign wealth funds with a climate investment mandate - can be critical purpose-built conduits especially for undertaking …

Exploring Code Vulnerabilities Through Code Reviews: An Empirical Study On Openstack Nova, Taleb Fahmawi, Ahmad Nabot, Issam Jebreen, Ahmad Al-Qerem

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

Effective code review is a critical aspect of software quality assurance, requiring a meticulous examination of code snippets to identify weaknesses and other quality issues. Unfortunately, the biggest threat to software quality is developers’ disregard for code-writing standards, which leads to code smells. Despite their importance, code smells are not always identified during code review, creating a need for an empirical study to uncover vulnerabilities in code reviews. This study aimed to explore vulnerabilities in code reviews by examining the OpenStack project, Nova. After analyzing 4873 review comments, we identified 187 comments related to possible vulnerabilities, and a pilot study …

Blockchain Technology Trends In Different Sectors: A Review, Afaf M. Bugawa

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

Purpose: Currency transactions between companies or people are often controlled and characterized by third- party organizations. To make any such transaction or set up any digital payment transaction, a credit card company or bank acts as a middleman who helps to complete the transaction. The service provider charges a fee for this. Such transaction systems tend to be centralized, as the information involved in the process is managed and controlled by a third party, not the transacting parties. Blockchain technology innovates upon the transaction mechanism because it helps decentralize the environment by eliminating the third party in the transaction process. …
