Exploring Negotiated Autonomy In The Physician–Physician Assistant Collaborative Dyad, Stephen Robie
Exploring Negotiated Autonomy In The Physician–Physician Assistant Collaborative Dyad, Stephen Robie
Doctor of Philosophy in Translational Health Sciences Dissertations
Physician Assistants (PAs) are integral members of multidisciplinary medical care teams who practice medicine legally under the supervision of physicians. During medical care, supervision is a dynamic process of collaboration wherein a PA who displays competence is granted increasing independence by the supervising physician. This process has been referred to as negotiated autonomy. Despite being noted in work-force literature, the mechanics of how negotiated autonomy operates in real-time have not been described. As organizations increasingly work to integrate PAs into practice, new-hire training programs called ‘on-boarding’ have been implemented to accelerate PA professional development with a goal of increased efficiency …

The COVID-19 pandemic, a black swan event, created an unprecedented global health hazard and disrupted global economic activities. During the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, various governments announced lockdowns. India went under lockdown from 25 March 2020 for 21 days. These lockdowns disrupted the social fabric and economic activities. We examined the demographic and socio-economic determinants of COVID-19 infections and deaths across over 400 districts in India. Using statistical methods, we observed that the infection patterns demonstrate localized characteristics across districts. Areas with a larger male population and higher economic activity witnessed higher infection rates. Districts with more agricultural …

The stakes of information ownership and control have risen dramatically since the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, after which tens of millions of people in the United States recognized that companies harvest massive swathes of data incidental to our activities and that seemingly innocuous information, such as rideshare or location data, credit card payments, or even monthly cyclical health trackers (i.e., menstruation or birth control) could potentially expose them to civil or criminal liability when linked to a chain of causation in jurisdictions penalizing voluntary abortion.2 Data scientists recognize the scale, scope, and massive power …

Department of Social Work and Child Advocacy Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Despite young Black women’s high rates of social media use and risks for victimization at the nexus of sexism and racism, the relationship between these variables remains under researched in this segment. We surveyed 354 Black American women aged 18–30 to explore the associations between two aspects of social media use—time spent daily on social media platforms (i.e., Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, Tumblr, Twitter, and YouTube) and type of social media engagement (i.e., active social use, active non-social use, and passive use)—with four different types of online victimization (i.e., general online victimization [GOV], online sexual victimization [OSV], online individual racial …
Posture And Injury Prevention Program For High School Musicians, Clifford C. Scott, Cassandra Nelson
Posture And Injury Prevention Program For High School Musicians, Clifford C. Scott, Cassandra Nelson
Summer 2024 OTD Capstone Symposium
Musicians face many musculoskeletal-related injuries due to overuse and repetitive motions (Gembris et al., 2020). These injuries can be mitigated by addressing posture as well as methods to prevent injuries and promote healthier playing. The proposed capstone program is occupationally based and developed to address posture and prevent musculoskeletal injuries among musicians. Occupational therapy can help musicians prevent and treat the development of postural asymmetries and musculoskeletal injuries that inhibit occupational participation and performance in playing their instruments (Ting et al., 2019).

Ovarian Cancer (OC) is one of the major types of cancers in women worldwide. Despite the standardization of characteristics that can help distinguish benign from malignant ovarian masses, accurate predictive modelling following ultrasound (US) examination and biomarkers for’progression-free survival’ is lacking in the field of ovarian cancer. Important leading factors in ovarian cancer lethality are the lack of diagnostic procedures and proper screening to detect early-stage ovarian cancer, and the rapid spread of the disease over the surface of the peritoneum. Therefore, developing tools for accurate screening and prognosis, as well as the diagnosis of early stage ovarian cancer, is …

Analyzing Teachers' Perceptions Of A Principal's Instructional Leadership Practices On A Dual Language Campus Using The Blase And Blase Reflective Growth Model, Selene Canales-Garcia
Theses and Dissertations
As the research base in support of dual language instruction become stronger and more widely recognized, dual language instruction program popularity has risen and the number of programs implemented across the United States has grown (Christian, 2018). Demand for qualified teachers and school administrators is high, but teacher supply has not risen commensurately (Kennedy, 2018b). Therefore, the problem lies in principals having to prepare and provide the necessary supports and professional development for bilingual teachers. The purpose of this research is to explore teachers' perceptions of the principal's instructional leadership practices using the theoretical framework of the Blase Reflective Growth …
Habitat Restoration Along The U.S.-Mexican Border Examining Collaborative Governance For The Bahia Grande, Mya Jude Brown
Habitat Restoration Along The U.S.-Mexican Border Examining Collaborative Governance For The Bahia Grande, Mya Jude Brown
Theses and Dissertations
The Bahia Grande, a 6,500-acre tidal basin in southeastern Cameron County, Texas, once provided habitat for numerous species. Construction projects, such as the Brownsville Ship Channel, altered ecosystem functions and separated it from its water source, reducing it to a dried wetland. In 2005, restoration initiatives reconnected the Bahia Grande to a water source through the Carl Joe Gayman channel, and additional restoration efforts continued. Despite this progress, this area had notable deficiencies in management efforts due to resource scarcity, limited research, and a lack of public awareness. This research investigates the presence and effects of management strategies on the …
Viewing Ir Through A Unicolonial Lens: A Case Study On The Effects Of Cultural Recognition On State Behavior, Andrew Viera
Viewing Ir Through A Unicolonial Lens: A Case Study On The Effects Of Cultural Recognition On State Behavior, Andrew Viera
Theses and Dissertations
The following thesis utilizes the concept of unicoloniality, a process found within several ant species, to analyze the aggressive behavior and alliance-forming behavior of states. Through the unique lens of ant colony behavior, this study creates a new variable for quantifying culture that measures whether two states can recognize each other based on their cultural identity. Utilizing this noble variable, a logistic regression model was run to test the impact of cultural recognition on state behavior. The results indicated that cultural recognition had no effect on the decision of a state to join an alliance or engage in a militarized …

This phenomenological study used semi-structured interviews of 5 participants working in this setting. Participants were recruited through snowball sampling, and interviews were conducted via zoom. This study found that participants unanimously agreed that the training they received regarding verbal de-escalation was not sufficient and that employment of certain personality traits and behaviors were more effective than using only the methods …
A Qualitative Study Exploring The Management & Implications Of Power Differentials Experienced By Pre-Licensed Supervisees In Clinical Supervision Settings, Joyti Jariwala
Dissertations
The focus in this qualitative study was to explore how power differentials in supervision create positive and negative experiences between licensed psychologists and pre-licensed doctoral students. The study results provide insight into how supervisees navigate these dynamics during supervision, which typically involves experiential learning environments in which trainees discuss progress, receive feedback, and enhance their skills. The theoretical framework grounding the study was social learning theory, which is based on the idea that individuals learn from modeling, observation, and imitation in a social context (Bandura, 1986). Reflexive thematic analysis was used to recognize similarities in findings gathered via two sets …

We conducted an epidemiological study by using the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) database to assess and quantify waterskiing injuries between 2012 and 2022. A total of 898 injuries were reported, primarily among Caucasian males during competition. Head (177, 20%), face (93, 10%), and knee (70, 8%) were the most prevalent types of injuries. Common physical examination findings included muscle strains, ligament sprains, lacerations, and fractures. Although rare, there were reported cases of dental injury, hemorrhage, crushing, foreign body, and amputation as well. These findings suggest that protective equipment, particularly headgear, is necessary to reduce the incidence of waterskiing …

We report our management of a 53-year-old female who suffered a wood planer hand-mutilating injury with significant dorsal soft tissue loss and partial metacarpophalangeal joint (MCPJ) amputations of the thumb, index, and middle fingers. The middle finger was deconstructed for "spare parts" and a vascularized osteochondral graft was utilized to reconstruct the metacarpal articular surface of the index finger proximal phalanx, allowing the pedicled transposition of the index finger to the third metacarpal. The middle finger's distal interphalangeal joint was transplanted non-vascularly to recreate the thumb MCPJ and the elevation of a middle finger fillet flap allowed dorsal wound coverage. …

Xerosis is highly prevalent in the population aged over 50 years and substantially impacts quality of life due to the associated stigma, related pruritus, and potential sequelae. We propose that the term mature xerosis be used for subjects over 50 who suffer from age-related xerosis and replace senile xerosis to describe the phenomenon. The etiology of xerosis depends on genetic and environmental factors that affect stratum corneum hydration and skin barrier function. Skincare to restore barrier function is essential in xerosis treatment and is relevant for maintaining and preventing its progression. Many moisturizers and cleansers are available for xerosis; however, …
