Using Plithogenic Statistics To Determine Optimal Guinea Pig Manure Dosing In Prickly Pear Cultivation, Jorge F. Troya-Sarzosa, Cristian Oña
Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
This study applied plithogenic statistics to evaluate how different doses of guinea pig manure affect the cultivation of Opuntia ficus-indica (commonly known as prickly pear) and soil quality. It was determined that 7.5 tons/ha, referred to as treatment T3, is the optimal dose, as it maximizes the growth and production of the plant, improves plant height, and increases the production of buttons and berries. T3 also optimized organic matter and adjusted the pH to ideal levels, maintaining a nutritional balance that ensures the availability of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. This balance enhances agricultural production without sacrificing soil sustainability. In conclusion, …

Neutrosophic Clustering Analysis With Data From Cysticercus Tenuicollis Dna Samples, Blanca Mercedes Toro Molina, Rafael Alfonso Garzón Jarrin, Mauricio Rafael Aguilera Vizuete, Christian Geovanny Ávila Rocha, Luis Favian Cartuche Macas, Edilberto Chacón Marcheco
Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
Parasitic diseases caused by Cysticercus tenuicollis significantly impact the livestock industry. The quantification of such impacts presents challenges due to the handling of data obtained through modern molecular techniques. This investigation explores the application of neutrosophic cluster analysis to the study of Cysticercus tenuicollis DNA. Neutrosophic clustering and the use of linguistic terms help interpret analyses, employing a five-step neutrosophic clustering algorithm: selection of the clustering algorithm, definition of distance metrics, data preparation, algorithm execution, and examination of results. Samples from 20 sheep exhibiting liver cysts were collected in Cotopaxi Province, Ecuador. The analysis resulted in a neutrosophic cluster where …

Neutrosophic Analysis In The Evaluation Of The Use Of Beauveria Bassiana Against The Potato White Grub, Edwin M. Chancusig-Espin, Paulina Imbaquingo Cachipuendo, Doris Guil-Camaigua
Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
Beauveria bassiana is an entomopathogenic fungus that has been shown to have the potential to control the potato white grub (Premnotrypes vorax), a pest that significantly affects potato production, especially in Ecuador. Therefore, the present study has focused on evaluating the effectiveness of Beauveria bassiana in the control of the potato white grub under laboratory conditions. To this end, neutrosophic statistics have been used to analyze larval mortality, by applying concentrations of 〖10〗^4, 〖10〗^6 and 〖10〗^8 conidia of Beauveria bassiana by spraying and immersion. Among the results, it was determined that treatment at a concentration of 108 conidia per spray …
Identity Configuration Of Physician Clinician Educators: A Mixed Methods Study, Lindsey D. White
Identity Configuration Of Physician Clinician Educators: A Mixed Methods Study, Lindsey D. White
Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs
This study explores identities of physician clinician educators (CEs) and finds that their identities are multiple and that the COVID-19 pandemic impacted CE identity configuration. Following a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design (quan -> QUAL), participants (n = 115) completed the Physician Clinician Educator Identity Survey (PCEIS) and semi-structured interviews (n = 12). Exploratory factor analysis resulted in a three-factor model; the PCEIS is an acceptable measure of singular CE identity, collective identity, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on CE identity. Qualitative results confirmed the quantitative results and revealed that CEs experience identity enhancement and conflict among multiple identities …
Essays On The Societal Impacts Of Housing Programs And Substance Use Disorder Treatment, Rex W. Sitti
Essays On The Societal Impacts Of Housing Programs And Substance Use Disorder Treatment, Rex W. Sitti
Economics ETDs
I present three essays that contribute to understanding the secondary costs and benefits associated with programs that address homelessness and substance use disorder (SUD) treatment. The first essay investigates whether homeless shelters impact property values. Despite anecdotal claims of property devaluation, endogeneity challenges limit empirical research on homelessness programs. Using data from the Department of Housing (HUD) and Seattle’s King County Department of Assessment, I address these challenges using spatial difference-in-differences methodology, revealing nuanced effects favoring permanent supportive housing. The second essay leverages the Built for Zero program to examine the link between homelessness and crime. Analyzing HUD and crime …

Structural Analysis Of Dj-1 Glyoxalase Activity By Mix-And-Inject Serial Synchrotron Crystallography, Coleman Dolamore
Structural Analysis Of Dj-1 Glyoxalase Activity By Mix-And-Inject Serial Synchrotron Crystallography, Coleman Dolamore
Department of Biochemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Observing enzyme structures while they are catalyzing a reaction has been a major goal of both enzymology and structural biology for decades. With the advent of time-resolved serial X-ray crystallography using X-ray free electron lasers (XFELs) and synchrotron sources, enzyme reactions can be monitored in real time in crystallo. Here, we use two different approaches to study related enzymes involved in methylglyoxal detoxification. For human DJ-1, we used pink beam mix-and-inject serial crystallography (MISC) at the Advanced Photon Source (BioCARS 14-ID) to probe the controversial mechanism of DJ-1’s action on methylglyoxal by using serial Laue diffraction. The high flux …

Data-Driven Drug Repurposing For Immune System-Related Diseases, Sabyasachi Mohanty
Department of Biochemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
In this research, we explore a data-driven approach for drug repurposing to enhance the immunomodulatory effect by integrating pattern-based search and genome-scale metabolic modeling. This research helps to find a solution to the preexisting problems of drug discovery which includes expenses and a high amount of time consumption. By leveraging the pre-existing data of the approved drugs to identify the major metabolic pathway changes, we can find new drugs with similar effects with less off-target effects.
The focus on the immune system modulating drugs is due to the high prevalence of immune system-involved diseases and the growing demand for effective …

Transaction Monitoring And Enforcing Confidentiality On Blockchain Transactions, Musa Omobolanle Ogunyemi
Transaction Monitoring And Enforcing Confidentiality On Blockchain Transactions, Musa Omobolanle Ogunyemi
Executive DBA Dissertations
There has been significant growth in the adoption of blockchain technology mainly due to its inherent advantages, such as decentralization, disintermediation, security, store of value, etc. These characteristics have enhanced the adoption of blockchain which can be noticed in the increasing popularity of its use cases such as cryptocurrencies (Bitcoin and Ether), Non-Fungible Token (NFTs), Decentralized Finance (DeFi), Initial Coin Offerings ICOs, etc. However, despite its promise, there are still some fundamental weaknesses in the workings of blockchain technology. A balanced tweaking of these weaknesses can further enable it to realize its full potential with the attendant multiplier effects on …
Interleukin 24 Induces Apoptosis Through Glycogen Synthase Kinase-3 Beta Inactivation In Prostate Cancer Cells, Sual J. Lopez, Moira Sauane
Interleukin 24 Induces Apoptosis Through Glycogen Synthase Kinase-3 Beta Inactivation In Prostate Cancer Cells, Sual J. Lopez, Moira Sauane
Theses and Dissertations
Interleukin 24 (IL-24) is a tumor-suppressing protein currently in clinical trials. IL-24 induces cancer-specific apoptosis by activating endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and mitochondria dysfunction. We have previously demonstrated that IL-24 leads to apoptosis in cancer cells by protein kinase A (PKA) activation in human breast cancer cells. To further understand the mechanism by which IL-24 induces apoptosis, I analyzed the role of glycogen synthase kinase-3 (GSK3), a highly conserved and normally active serine/threonine kinase in cancer cells and downstream target of PKA. The work reported here provides direct evidence that GSK3 was inhibited following IL-24 treatment in human prostate cancer …

Social Media And Surveillance Capitalism: Facebook, Political Polarization, Orwellian Dystopia, And American Democracy, Sunil Sahu, Punita Sahu
Political Science Faculty publications
Social media platforms have played a significant role in recent elections in the U.S. and other democracies. While Facebook and Twitter (now renamed X) claimed that they are “on a journey to connect the world,” to serve the goals of reforms and to bring about more democracy, their platforms have been effectively used to spread lies, misinformation, and disinformation which led some analysts to argue that we now live in a post-truth world and that the Orwellian dystopia is upon us. This paper is an attempt to assess whether big tech companies have created an Orwellian state in the U.S. …
Elucidation Of Potential Antimicrobial Properties Of Chalcones, Caleb Howell
Elucidation Of Potential Antimicrobial Properties Of Chalcones, Caleb Howell
Theses
The rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria is a growing concern for the medical and biological community. Increased use of antibiotics has led to increased development of bacterial tolerances. This phenomenon, driven by the principles of evolution, has been exacerbated by the improper antibiotic use of these antibiotics. Often, individuals stop taking antibiotics once symptoms subside, mistakenly believing the infection is cured. This practice allows bacteria or fungi to develop resistance.
These antibiotics have been developed from secondary metabolites. While we have many effective antibiotics we are facing new threats. Chalcones are being looked at for their potential in addressing this issue. …
The Relationship Between Changing Land Cover And Benthic Macroinvertebrate Diversity In Choccolocco Creek, Northeast Alabama, Kindall Brown
The Relationship Between Changing Land Cover And Benthic Macroinvertebrate Diversity In Choccolocco Creek, Northeast Alabama, Kindall Brown
Theses
Land cover changes, driven by urbanization, agriculture, and deforestation, significantly affect the physical and chemical characteristics of water bodies at both the watershed and riparian levels. At the larger spatial scale, a stream’s surrounding watershed facilitates lateral inputs into the stream that are essential for biodiversity support, hydrological stability, and water quality. When a stream becomes disconnected from the lateral inputs due to urban or agricultural development, the morphology of the stream is significantly altered. On a smaller spatial scale, the riparian zone can act as a buffer to pollutants. The vegetation surrounding the stream bank promotes stability to the …

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications
Lead toxicity has hindered the wide applications of lead halide perovskites in optoelec- tronics and bioimaging. A significant amount of effort has been made to synthesize lead-free halide perovskites as alternatives to lead halide perovskites. In this work, we demonstrate the feasibility of synthesizing CsSnI3-based powders mechanochemically with dual light emissions under ambi- ent conditions from CsI and SnI2 powders. The formed CsSnI3-based powders are divided into CsSnI3-dominated powders and CsSnI3-contained powders. Under the excitation of ultraviolet light of 365 nm in wavelength, the CsSnI3-dominated powders emit green light with a wavelength centered at 540 nm, and the CsSnI3-contained powders …
Orthodontic Load Quantification Leveling A Deep Curve Of Spee With Different Archwire Designs, Ahmed Youssef
Orthodontic Load Quantification Leveling A Deep Curve Of Spee With Different Archwire Designs, Ahmed Youssef
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Objective: This study aimed to quantify the effects of different materials, sizes of the continuous archwires in leveling the exaggerated curve of Spee. We used an orthodontic force tester apparatus to measure the forces and moments delivered by the archwires to the brackets attached to the sensors of one quadrant of the arch (from 1st incisor to 2nd molar). The hypothesis is that there is no difference in the load and moments between the incisors when the curve of Spee is leveled with the three different mechanical designs being tested. Methods: An orthodontic force tester (OFT) was used to measure …
The Role Of Obesity In The Development Of Disordered Breathing, Sarah N. Framnes-Deboer
The Role Of Obesity In The Development Of Disordered Breathing, Sarah N. Framnes-Deboer
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Obesity is a complex disease that is defined by an excess amount of body fat. Obesity can have physical, neurological, and endocrine effects and detrimental effects on health. Some obese co-morbid conditions, such as type 2 diabetes have known mechanisms, while others, such as sleep disordered breathing do not. Moreover, there are common respiratory diseases associated with obesity, such as obstructive sleep apnea and obesity hypoventilation syndrome. Furthermore, individuals with obesity or obstructive sleep apnea have a blunted hypercapnic ventilatory response (HCVR) (120), which is indicative of impaired chemosensitivity, as HCVR is a measure of how well an individual responds …
Pressure Dependence Of The Rate Coefficient Of Ozone Using Master Equation Simulations Of Recombination Kinetics, Adil Yermek
Pressure Dependence Of The Rate Coefficient Of Ozone Using Master Equation Simulations Of Recombination Kinetics, Adil Yermek
Master's Theses (2009 -)
The ozone layer in Earth’s atmosphere is distinctive and crucial for the evolution of life. Investigating the process of ozone formation aids in comprehending the evolution of our planet’s atmosphere. The reaction that forms ozone is O + O2 → O3. One can describe ozone forming reaction approximately using Lindeman mechanism, which is very handy. However, its limitation arises from assuming a steady-state approximation, which neglects transient dynamics and complexities that could impact reaction kinetics under non-equilibrium conditions. For this reason, Master Equation simulations can be seen as an enhancement or extension of the Lindemann mechanism, providing a thorough understanding …
Social Experiences Within And Across Neurotype, Claudia Todd
Social Experiences Within And Across Neurotype, Claudia Todd
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Previous research has suggested that some individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) prefer interacting with individuals who share a similar neurotype, and that for some, cross-neurotype interactions present some social barriers and challenges (Crompton et al., 2020). To better understand social and conversational challenges, much research has focused on the challenges and deficits exhibited by those with ASD. However, there is not substantial research related to deficits across neurotype interactions (particularly with neurotypical individuals). Therefore, the purpose of this study was to conduct interviews using qualitative methods to explore social interactions within and across neurotypes for both neurodiverse and neurotypical …
Investigation Of Emissions Characteristics Of Natural Gas Engines With Prechamber Enabled Mixing Controlled Combustion, Johnathan Michael Ronsman
Investigation Of Emissions Characteristics Of Natural Gas Engines With Prechamber Enabled Mixing Controlled Combustion, Johnathan Michael Ronsman
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Increasingly stringent emissions regulations have motivated the exploration of ways to decarbonize the internal combustion engine (ICE). Alternative fuels are of interest as they can easily be implemented with existing infrastructure. Among these alternative fuels, natural gas stands out due to its large abundance and high hydrogen-to-carbon ratio, which can significantly reduce CO2 emissions. Due to its low reactivity, most natural gas engines today are premixed lean burn spark ignited (SI) engines. These engines produce criteria pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) and carbon monoxide (CO), but due to their premixed nature, also produce relatively large amounts of unburned methane …
Parental Political Engagement And Self-Efficacy: An Exploratory Study, Christina Randolph, Robert Needlman, Ellen Hutchinson
Parental Political Engagement And Self-Efficacy: An Exploratory Study, Christina Randolph, Robert Needlman, Ellen Hutchinson
Faculty Scholarship
Political engagement (PE) is associated with a sense of empowerment. PE by parents affects children's lives. This study explored parents' attitudes about inclusion of political engagement discussion in well-child care. Because voting is an expression of empowerment, we hypothesized that voting would be related to higher parenting self-efficacy. We administered a brief questionnaire to a convenience sample of parents/guardians at well-child visits at an urban hospital. The questionnaire included 10 Likert scale questions touching on parenting efficacy; beliefs about political engagement; voting behaviors; and demographics. Analysis included descriptive statistics, correlations, and factor analysis. Among the 70 respondents 84% were mothers; …

The Effect Of Angiogenesis On Thermal Properties Of In-Vivo Human Tissue, Shriya Musuku
The Effect Of Angiogenesis On Thermal Properties Of In-Vivo Human Tissue, Shriya Musuku
Theses
Bioheat transfer is the study of heat transfer in biology. There are several sources of heat in biology including external ones such as surgical applications of heat, or internal ones like cancer tissue. Blood flow networks affect both types of processes and are often generated during disease phenomenon through a process called angiogenesis. This affects the properties of the tissue. Several attempts were made to model flow and heat transfer within various tissues through physical measurements or computer simulations. Both types of models used bioheat transfer models do not consider the geometry of vasculature at its most fundamental level. The …

Impact Of Non-Thermal Plasma Generated Using Air And Nitrogen On Functional Properties Of Milk Protein Dispersions, Nikitha Modupalli, Md Mahfuzur Rahman
Food Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
This study focuses on improving the functionalities of milk protein concentrate (MPC) using a nonthermal plasma jet and plasma-activated water (PAW) with atmospheric air and nitrogen as source gases. The 5% and 10% MPC dispersions were directly treated with a plasma jet, and PAW was used to make the MPC dispersions. The dispersions were analyzed for changes in protein structure and functional properties. The treatment altered the secondary structure of MPC protein structure by increasing β-components and changing the order of random coils. The solubility of the PAW-treated 5% protein dispersions doubled due to plasma-induced modification of hydrophilic and covalent …
Spatial And Temporal Variability In Nutritional Physiology Of Pyropia Perforata, Matthew S. Elliott
Spatial And Temporal Variability In Nutritional Physiology Of Pyropia Perforata, Matthew S. Elliott
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The red alga, Pyropia perforata, commonly referred to as nori, is ubiquitous in intertidal communities throughout coastal California and offers high nutritional value to marine herbivores. However, California rocky shores are dynamic ecosystems, with dramatic abiotic and biotic shifts resulting in environmental heterogeneity. Research has shown that seaweed nutrient physiology is impacted by environmental heterogeneity, yet there is sparse data on how internal nitrogen and total protein content change as a result of environmental heterogeneity. Here, I studied the impacts of seasonality, geography (spanning 4° of latitude from Northern to Southern California), and the onset of environmental heterogeneity on internal …

Fedgmmat: Federated Generalized Linear Mixed Model Association Tests, Wentao Li, Han Chen, Xiaoqian Jiang, Arif Harmanci
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Increasing genetic and phenotypic data size is critical for understanding the genetic determinants of diseases. Evidently, establishing practical means for collaboration and data sharing among institutions is a fundamental methodological barrier for performing high-powered studies. As the sample sizes become more heterogeneous, complex statistical approaches, such as generalized linear mixed effects models, must be used to correct for the confounders that may bias results. On another front, due to the privacy concerns around Protected Health Information (PHI), genetic information is restrictively protected by sharing according to regulations such as Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). This limits data sharing …
