Filipino Citizen Planners In Stockton & San Francisco, California: Little Manila Rising (Lmr) & South Of Market Community Action Network (Somcan), Natalie Pauline Delos Santos
City and Regional Planning
Citizen planners are direct representatives of their communities, “often working without formal position, a title, or support from the state” (Beard, 2012, p. 708). The purpose of this project is to enrich the existing literature of planning history, by including stories of citizen planners. And acknowledging them as key actors in building equitable communities. This project asserts the importance of local knowledge and citizen empowerment when it comes to successfully developing community.
This project follows the story of two Filipino citizen planner organizations. One is in Stockton, named Little Manila Rising (LMR) which is located in South Downtown Stockton. The …

The Relationship Between Academic Crafting, Work-School Facilitation And Academic Engagement: A Mediated Model, Gökhan Kerse, Umut Çil
Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia
This research examines the relationship between academic crafting, work-school facilitation and academic engagement in higher education. Based on the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) Model, the research sought to determine how students' alignment of academic activities with personal preferences and interests (academic crafting) affects academic engagement and whether work-school facilitation mediates this effect. The research therefore emphasized the delicate balance that students strike between their work obligations and their scholarly activities. Our research hypotheses focused on understanding how academic crafting directly and indirectly affects student engagement. The research data were obtained from a sample of students enrolled in postgraduate programs and actively …
Enhancing Self-Concept Among Preschoolers, Amanda Collings
Enhancing Self-Concept Among Preschoolers, Amanda Collings
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
Academic achievement and what influences it among students is a focus of many researchers today. When students do well in school, they are more likely to succeed in other areas of life. Self-concept is one factor associated with academic achievement among youth. It is important for adults working with children to understand not only its importance but how to improve it among children so that they succeed in school and after graduation. Early childhood educators have an opportunity to instill a positive self-concept in preschoolers before they enter kindergarten, setting them up for high academic performance. It requires professional development …

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
This paper explores the importance and benefits of Play-Based Learning (PBL) in early childhood education, with a focus on West Elementary School. It highlights the current problems, like less playtime in kindergarten, which has caused behavior issues and missed growth opportunities. The study stresses the need for a balanced curriculum that includes PBL to help children grow cognitively, socially, emotionally, and physically. Key findings show that adding PBL can improve academic results, reduce behavior problems, and boost overall student development. The proposed plan includes strategies for increasing playtime, creating play-based activities, and providing teacher training. Involving parents and the community …

Louisiana Agriculture
When the first agricultural experiment stations were founded in Louisiana more than 130 years ago, researchers focused on ways to improve the lives of farmers across the state. They found the best methods for raising cash crops and livestock along with the fruits and vegetables grown to feed the average rural family. Today the LSU AgCenter maintains that long legacy of research and expands its scope.
This issue of Louisiana Agriculture acknowledges those who helped establish the system of research and extension that would grow into the AgCenter. In addition to these articles, the scientists and staff at the AgCenter …

Resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (R-fMRI) offers insight into how synchrony within and between brain networks is altered in disease states. Individual and disease-related variability in intrinsic connectivity networks may influence our interpretation of R-fMRI data. We used a personalized approach designed to account for individual variation in the spatial location of correlation maxima to evaluate R-fMRI differences between Parkinson's disease (PD) patients who showed cognitive decline, those who remained cognitively stable and cognitively stable controls. We compared fMRI data from these participant groups, studied at baseline and 18 months later, using both network-based statistics (NBS) and calculations of …

The effects of female sex hormones on optimal performance have been increasingly recognized as an important consideration in exercise and sport science research. This narrative review explores the findings of studies evaluating the effects of menstrual cycle phase in eumenorrheic women and the use of hormonal contraception (oral contraceptives and hormonal intrauterine devices) on metabolism, muscular strength, and recovery in active females. Ovarian hormones are known to influence metabolism because estrogen is a master regulator of bioenergetics. Importantly, the menstrual cycle may impact protein synthesis, impacting skeletal muscle quality and strength. Studies investigating muscular strength in eumenorrheic women report equivocal …

The characterization of human behavior in real-world contexts is critical for developing a comprehensive model of human health. Recent technological advancements have enabled wearables and sensors to passively and unobtrusively record and presumably quantify human behavior. Better understanding human activities in unobtrusive and passive ways is an indispensable tool in understanding the relationship between behavioral determinants of health and diseases. Adult individuals (N = 60) emulated the behaviors of smoking, exercising, eating, and medication (pill) taking in a laboratory setting while equipped with smartwatches that captured accelerometer data. The collected data underwent expert annotation and was used to train a …

Urban environments expose wildlife to levels of anthropogenic noise they would not experience in rural areas (e.g., traffic noise), and research suggests that many species adjust their acoustic signals for optimal transmission in urban soundscapes. However, our understanding of anuran (order Anura) responses to noise pollution in urban environments of the southeastern United States is limited, particularly for species that can breed during winter. Our goal was to examine how vocal anuran advertisement call characteristics during winter varied with increasing distance from roadways in bottomland hardwoods of Louisiana, USA. We deployed acoustic recording units at two sites (i.e., rural and …

Capstone Projects – Politics and Government
This research project explores the evolution of incarceration philosophies and their disconnect from outdated prison infrastructure in the United States, with a focus on Illinois. From ancient civilizations’ reliance on retributive justice to the modern era’s emphasis on rehabilitation, punishment practices have evolved, yet many facilities remain stuck in the past. The “tough-on-crime” era deepened the divide, leading to overcrowding and neglect. While recent reforms prioritize rehabilitation, progress is hindered by outdated facilities. Illinois’ plans to demolish and rebuild Logan and Stateville Correctional Centers offer renewed hope, but the lengthy process requires significant investment and commitment from all involved parties.

Fall Rates In Patient Populations With Remote Video Monitoring Compared To Companions, Alexandra Volpe, Catherine Close
Nurse Residency
Background: Healthcare facilities are constantly searching for new and improved interventions to minimize injury and fall rates within their units. 1:1 companions, or ‘sitters’, have been used to provide the patient with close monitoring in order to accomplish these goals. However, companions are not always a liable option for facilities due to poor staffing and increased expense in order to staff a ratio of 1 companion to 1 patient. Research has started to develop on the benefits of remote video monitoring, or ‘telesitting’, as an intervention to minimize fall risk and injury.

Reducing Cesarean Sections With Peanut Ball Use: A Quality Improvement Project, Alexi Rivera Bsn, Rn
DNP Projects
Cesarean sections, although sometimes medically necessary, carry multiple risks and complications. Movement and frequent repositioning throughout labor has been shown to support the natural physiologic process of birth, leading to less medical intervention and increased incidences of vaginal deliveries. The peanut ball is a variation of a birthing ball that assists women with this movement and repositioning. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to see if increasing nursing knowledge on peanut ball benefits, risks, and proper technique would reduce cesarean section rates. It is expected that peanut ball use throughout labor would decrease cesarean sections and increase the …
