Play-Based Learning: A School Improvement Plan, Pamela Butler

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

In early childhood education, the benefits of play-based learning are widely recognized. Research indicates that it has a significant impact on a child’s social-emotional development, literacy skills, and mathematics. Within the West Elementary building at Knoxville Community School District, studies suggest that children could benefit from more time spent in play-based learning activities. This school improvement plan outlines the steps necessary to increase the time dedicated to play-based learning in transitional kindergarten and kindergarten classrooms. By implementing these strategies, the district aims to enhance student engagement and overall academic achievement.

The Incorporation Of Social-Emotional Learning Into The School Setting, Josh Reynolds Jul 2024

The Incorporation Of Social-Emotional Learning Into The School Setting, Josh Reynolds

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

The concept of social and emotional and learning has been prevalent for years, however, it has not been at the forefront of educational initiatives until recently. Today, we understand through extensive research that social-emotional learning can be utilized to strengthen the whole school experience for all students. The purpose of this school improvement plan is to decrease problem behaviors, and help our students become more engaged in the whole school experience. Modern education has moved into the realm of symbiosis, where learning is reciprocated, and where learning is a process rather than simply a beginning and an end. We are …

Five Side Populations Isolated From Rat Bone Marrow‑Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells, Dalia Al Saied Moustafa Ahmed, Mahmoud Elhussiny Salama, Ahmed Abdou Emam, Sara Mohamed Farrag, Basma Hamed Othman, Shaimaa Hassan Haiba, Mohamed Mosaad Salama

Faculty Journal Articles

Over the past decade, there has been marked enthusiasm surrounding the potential application of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) as universally compatible donor cells in the field of regenerative medicine. Due to their distinctive immune-tolerant characteristics, these entities hold promise for potential applications in cell replacement, gene therapy and immunomodulatory therapy. MSCs have been defined and characterized based on adhesion properties and different surface markers that are negative for hematopoietic stem cells and positive for MSCs, and their capacity for differentiation into osteocyte, chondrocyte and adipocyte is observed under suitable circumstances. However, this protocol is costly and time-consuming and cannot confirm …

Exploring Serum Α-Synuclein And Its Autoantibodies In Essential Tremor: Implications For Diagnosis And Symptom Correlations, Ali Shalash, Ahmed Doma, Mai Barakat, Eman Hamid, Mohamed Salama

Faculty Journal Articles

There is no definite biomarker for confirming the diagnosis of essential tremor (ET) or differentiating it from other diseases, particularly Parkinson's disease. The present study aimed to investigate the serum levels of the α-synuclein protein (α-syn) and its autoantibodies in patients with ET compared with healthy controls and its relation to motor and non-motor symptoms in patients with ET. Serum α-syn and its autoantibodies were measured in 32 patients with ET and 32 age- and sex-matched controls. Both groups were assessed using the non-motor symptoms scale, MoCA, Beck Depression Inventory, Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale, and the Short Form 36 Health …

A Landscape Evaluation Of Caffeine Citrate Availability And Use In Newborn Care Across Five Low- And Middle-Income Countries, Osayame Ekhaguere, Olufunke Bolaji, Helen Nabwera, Andrew Storey, Nicholas Embleton, Stephen Allen, Zelalem Demeke, Olufunke Fasawe, Betty Wariari, Mansharan Seth Jul 2024

Centre of Excellence in Women and Child Health

Apnoea of prematurity (AOP) is a common complication among preterm infants (< 37 weeks gestation), globally. However, access to caffeine citrate (CC) that is a proven safe and effective treatment in high-income countries is largely unavailable in low- and-middle income countries, where most preterm infants are born. Therefore, the overall aim of this study was to describe the demand, policies, and supply factors affecting the availability and clinical use of CC in LMICs. A mixed methods approach was used to collect data from diverse settings in LMICs including Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, and India. Qualitative semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions were conducted with 107 different health care providers, and 21 policymakers and other stakeholders from industry. Additional data was collected using standard questionnaires. A thematic framework approach was used to analyze the qualitative data and descriptive statistics were used to summarize the quantitative data. The findings indicate that there is variation in in-country policies on the use of CC in the prevention and treatment of AOP and its availability across the LMICs. As a result, the knowledge and experience of using CC also varied with clinicians in Ethiopia having no experience of using it while those in India have greater knowledge and experience of using it. This, in turn, influenced the demand, and our findings show that only 29% of eligible preterm infants are receiving CC in these countries. There is an urgent need to address the multilevel barriers to accessing CC for managing AOP in Africa. These include cost, lack of national policies, and, therefore, lack of demand stemming from its clinical equivalency with aminophylline. Practical ways to reduce the cost of CC in LMICs could potentially increase its availability and use.

Removing Methane Via Atmospheric Oxidation Enhancement: The Legal Framework, Romany M. Webb, Martin Lockman, Korey Silverman-Roati

Sabin Center for Climate Change Law

To achieve the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting the increase in global average temperatures to “well below 2 degrees Celsius,” and ideally 1.5 degrees Celsius, above pre-industrial levels, global greenhouse gas (“GHG”) emissions must reach net zero in the second half of the century. The global community is not currently on track to achieve net zero emissions. In fact, with the exception of a slight dip during the Covid-19 pandemic, emissions have risen steadily in recent years. This, together with the increasingly visible impacts of climate change, has prompted growing interest in the possibility of removing GHGs directly from the …

Politics, Law, and Society Faculty Journal Articles

This article introduces the NJAS special issue “Art and Imagined Futures in Eastern Africa”, edited by Alex Perullo, Claudia Böhme, and Christina Woolner, and has not been peer-reviewed. Artists in eastern Africa use songs, poems, fiction, cartoons, and other artistic forms to explore their lived experiences and future possibilities. Through their art they can envision alternatives to their current experiences, contest social and political problems, and reveal the dangers of complacency. They can also grapple with regret at missed opportunities or develop a sense of longing for a future that could or should have been had different decisions been made. …

Barriers To Family Planning For Women In West Africa, Emma Gunn Jul 2024

Barriers To Family Planning For Women In West Africa, Emma Gunn

Ballard Brief

In West Africa, access to family planning remains a pressing issue with far-reaching implications for women's health, education, and economic empowerment. Despite global efforts to promote reproductive rights and expand contraceptive access, significant barriers persist, hindering women's ability to make informed choices about their reproductive health. According to recent data, only 13% of married women aged 15-49 in West Africa use any form of family planning method, These low utilization rates are compounded by an unmet need for family planning among 26% of women in the region. Factors contributing to these barriers include limited access to accurate information, fear of …

Judicial Power And Potential Unconstitutionality: A Scholastic Perspective, Kevin C. Walsh Jul 2024

Judicial Power And Potential Unconstitutionality: A Scholastic Perspective, Kevin C. Walsh

Catholic University Law Review

This essay is an exercise in constructive retrieval of the traditional American understanding of judicial power with respect to judicial disregard of potentially unconstitutional laws when identifying rules of decision in constitutional adjudication.

This retrieval makes use of the act/potency distinction from Scholastic philosophy, Thomas Aquinas’s distinction between ius and lex, and John Marshall’s canonical account of the judicial application of the Constitution as a rule of decision in Marbury v. Madison to diagnose the cause of contemporary severability doctrine’s problems and to identify a basic framework for replacement doctrine.

I contend that the doctrinal pieces for the replacement …

A Comprehensive Study Of Library-Led Textbook Affordability Initiatives In The United States, Mitchell Scott, Rachel E. Scott Jul 2024

A Comprehensive Study Of Library-Led Textbook Affordability Initiatives In The United States, Mitchell Scott, Rachel E. Scott

Library Faculty and Staff Publications

This study presents findings from a survey and interviews investigating library-led textbook affordability initiatives in the United States. The results document diverse considerations and divergences in workflows, challenges librarians face in establishing and maintaining textbook affordability programs, and the intersection of these initiatives with library and institutional strategies. Findings suggest that these programs have grown in number and scale over the past few years, accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns, and are sustained—even without permanent, designated funding—due to consistently positive perceptions about their impact on student success, just-in-time delivery, and alignment with library and institutional goals.

An Experimental Study On Mixed Hydrocarbon Gas On Transport Through Subsurface And Atmospheric Interfaces With Application To Natural Gas Pipline Leak Dection And Quantification, Richard Kolodziej

Civil and Environmental Engineering Theses and Dissertations

Natural gas (NG) production and usage as a fuel source have surged in recent years, becoming a critical component of the global energy system and requiring extensive belowground pipeline infrastructure. Leaks in belowground pipelines release fugitive methane (CH4) emissions, posing significant environmental, safety, and economic risks. Effective leak detection and quantification (LDAQ) methods are essential for identifying and measuring leaks to enable timely repairs and accurately address these threats. However, few studies have characterized the effectiveness of current and advanced LDAQ survey methods for belowground NG pipelines, with existing work often limited to technology-centric evaluations or studies of …

Occupational Stress And Coping During A Public Health Emergency: A Mixed-Methods Approach To Understand The Experiences Of Lactation Professionals In Clinical Settings, Mya Michele Carter Jul 2024

Occupational Stress And Coping During A Public Health Emergency: A Mixed-Methods Approach To Understand The Experiences Of Lactation Professionals In Clinical Settings, Mya Michele Carter

Health Services Research Dissertations

Introduction: During public health emergencies, such as the coronavirus 2019 pandemic, breastfeeding is still the recommended feeding option, and mothers and babies may need additional support to reach breastfeeding goals. Pandemic-related, clinic-level restrictions posed new challenges for postpartum mothers and their healthcare teams, including lactation professionals (LPs). The pandemic and subsequent restrictions may have impacted lactation professionals’ work-related stress and limited their ability to provide lactation support. Coping strategies to mitigate occupational stress can be useful in preventing adverse outcomes for both the provider and the patient. The need for continuous support for this profession of healthcare workers is paramount. …
