Introduction: The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s Worker Protection Standards is the primary set of legislation aimed at protecting farmworkers from occupational pesticide exposure in the United States. Previous studies suggest that worker adoption of Pesticide Protective Behaviors (PPBs) promoted by WPS is associated with lower urinary pesticide concentrations. However, adoption of PPBs is often outside of the control of individual farmworkers and dependent on workplace factors such as employer provisioning of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and access to trainings/resources.
Methods: We conducted a mixed-method study including urinary pesticide biomonitoring, surveys, and interviews with 62 Latinx farmworkers in southwestern Idaho from …

How should instructors adapt technical editing courses to account for generative artificial intelligence (AI)? This article addresses what generative AI means for technical editing pedagogy. While AI tools may be able to address rote editing tasks, expert editors are still needed to provide accessible, ethical, and justice-oriented edits. After reviewing impacts of generative AI on editing praxis, the author focuses on the microcredentials that she built into an editing course in order to address these impacts pedagogically. The goal was to enable students to understand AI, argue for their expertise, and edit from ethical and social justice perspectives.

Psychosocial And Mental Health Challenges Facing Perinatally Hiv-Infected Adolescents Along The Kenyan Coast: A Qualitative Inquiry Using The Socioecological Model, Stanley W. Wanjala, Moses Nyongesa, Stanley Luchters, Amina Abubakar
Institute for Human Development, East Africa
Background: The advent of antiretroviral therapy has led perinatally HIV-infected (PHI) adolescents to live long, fulfilling lives through lifelong treatment. However, there is limited knowledge about the lived experiences and psychosocial and mental health challenges faced by PHI adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa, where 80% of PHI adolescents reside. To address this gap, we adapted the socioecological model to investigate the challenges and lived experiences of PHI adolescents in rural coastal Kenya.
Methods: Between October and November 2018, a sample of 40 participants (20 PHI adolescents and their 20 primary caregivers) participated in a qualitative study using an H-assessment data collection …

Sports participation has the potential to positively impact a young athlete’s physical, mental, and social health. Although some athletes have positive experience with sports, many choose to leave sports for a number of reasons. Sport participation has been on a decline in both the United States and Minnesota over the past 10 years. The purpose of this study was to understand the motives as to why experienced athletes decided to quit sports. Minnesotan adolescents aged 12-17 who quit sports after at least three years of participation were the subjects for this study. Thirty-two adolescents participated in a 20-question Likert-scale survey, …

For many, the “American Dream” involves earning a college degree. This degree promises a brighter professional and personal future and an improved overall quality of life. The steps taken to achieve this dream are graduating from high school, heading straight to college, graduating with that bachelor’s degree, and moving forward in the “perfect” career. While this step-by-step process seems natural to most, the reality is that in the fall of 2022, 69.2 percent of high school graduates entered the workforce, opting to pursue that degree much later in life ("College Enrollment," 2023). Researchers refer to this type of student as …

This study was conducted as part of the efforts of the Council's FGM Data Hub to address measurement challenges encountered by programme implementers in measuring change and the effect of social desirability in the context of FGM. The study involved piloting a simple opinion poll survey using a combination of direct (self-report) and indirect (vignettes) questioning methodologies to generate robust data to measure public views on FGM. While opinion polls have been widely used in market research and to measure public views on other stigmatised or illegal behaviours such as abortion, they have rarely been used in the FGM context. …
Multi-Omic Single-Cell Integration For Understanding T Cell Responses In Acute Myeloid Leukemia, Poonam Desai
Multi-Omic Single-Cell Integration For Understanding T Cell Responses In Acute Myeloid Leukemia, Poonam Desai
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
In recent years, translational initiatives have gained significant traction within the medical community. Clinical parameters alone have been insufficient to fully understand the intricate mechanisms governing patient responses to disease and therapy. Additionally, single-cell technologies have rapidly advanced to a point where generation of large patient-based datasets is financially and logistically feasible. The integration of clinical information with multi-omic single-cell technologies enables the formation of data-driven hypotheses pertaining to the mechanisms of disease progression and therapeutic resistance. Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) is a rapidly-progressing cancer of the bone marrow with poor prognoses and dismal outcomes. Of the adult patients that …
