Effort-Reward Imbalance Among Student Athletes: Relationships With Exploitation, Well-Being, Performance Satisfaction, And Burnout, Joseph Michael White

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

College athletics has changed dramatically since the first conception of “sports clubs” centuries ago. The effort required by student-athletes and the rewards they receive for participation have increased in tandem with the money involved in college athletics. Recent changes that allow student-athletes to be paid for use of their name, image, and likeness have further complicated relationships among effort, reward, and outcomes. In the effort-reward imbalance (ERI) model, effort without adequate reward produces stress and poor health-related outcomes, and research has supported this contention with regard to outcomes such as lower well-being and poorer performance among workers. However, few studies …

Bridging Cultural Identities: Empowering El Students Through Acculturation, Sarah D.T. Corder Jul 2024

Bridging Cultural Identities: Empowering El Students Through Acculturation, Sarah D.T. Corder

Masters Projects

English learners (ELs) are more likely to develop positive social and psychological outcomes when they acculturate to American society, which is to develop cultural competency while maintaining their home language, customs, and traditions (Berry et al., 2006). Yet, multiple factors in our current society cause ELs to lose connection to their heritage culture by assimilating to American society (Chen, 2018). This project first explores the factors that contribute to assimilation behaviors among elementary-age ELs and limit the positive social, emotional, and academic effects of acculturation. Using Vygotsky’s Sociocultural Theory as a framework, it then examines culturally responsive pedagogy as a …

In an engineered context such as membrane desalination, the most widely utilized technique for desalinating seawater, the nucleation and growth of minerals …

Queer Coding And Representation: The Motion Picture Production Code And Its Impact On The Lgbtq Community, Amber Leech Jul 2024

Queer Coding And Representation: The Motion Picture Production Code And Its Impact On The Lgbtq Community, Amber Leech

English and Creative Writing Summer Fellows

The Motion Picture Production Code was a set of guidelines for films imposed between 1934 and 1968 that prevented them from depicting immoral themes such as profanity, blasphemy, and glorification of criminal activity. While homosexuality was never explicitly mentioned, it was banned in films through a rule prohibiting the depiction of sex perversion. This resulted in many films using a technique called queer coding in which they could imply that a character was queer without alerting the Production Code Administration. Because queer characters could not be depicted without glamorizing homosexuality, however, many of these characters were villains, died in the …

Repetitive subconcussive head impacts occur regularly in sports. However, the exact relationship between their biomechanical properties and their consequences on brain structure and function has not been clarified yet. We therefore reviewed prospective cohort studies that objectively reported the biomechanical characteristics of repetitive subconcussive head impacts and their impact on brain anatomy and function. Only studies with a pre- to post-measurement design were included. Twenty-four studies met the inclusion criteria. Structural white matter alterations, such as reduced fractional anisotropy and an increase in mean diffusivity values, seem to be evident in athletes exposed to repetitive subconcussive head impacts exceeding 10 …

Patient-Generated Health-Data Information Needs In Pediatric Asthma, Victoria L. Tiase Jul 2024

Patient-Generated Health-Data Information Needs In Pediatric Asthma, Victoria L. Tiase

Dissertations

Patient-generated health data (PGHD) are data collected by patients that can be used to screen for health problems or monitor progress toward health goals. These data may be especially useful for those with chronic health conditions such as pediatric asthma, as PGHD reflect the day-to-day status and home behaviors. Without access to PGHD within clinical workflows, clinicians working to personalize care and treat patients at an individual level may have an incomplete picture of those patients. A thorough understanding of information needs and display preferences is required to present PGHD in the clinical documentation without causing information overload. The aims …
