Realizing The Right To Food In Maine: Insights From International Law, Smita Narula
Realizing The Right To Food In Maine: Insights From International Law, Smita Narula
Maine Law Review
In November 2021, Maine made history as the first U.S. state to constitutionally recognize the right to food. Maine’s right to food amendment—which sought to address widespread food insecurity and corporate control of the food supply—proclaims food as a “natural, inherent and unalienable right,” and empowers Mainers to grow and consume food of their own choosing, affirming their right to food sovereignty. This Article makes three key contributions to scholarly examinations of this historic amendment. First, it situates the amendment within the broader landscape of domestic and global struggles for the right to food and food sovereignty. Second, the Article …

The implementation of a transparent judging process is vital for the credibility of the Festival Film Indonesia (FFI). Clear evaluation criteria, including aspects like theme, originality, technical execution, and cultural impact, should be publicly accessible to foster trust in the system. A diverse jury pool, comprising established filmmakers, rising talents, regional representatives, and experts in various film aspects, is essential to ensure a balanced perspective and reduce bias. Strengthening FFI's credibility also involves a robust nomination and selection process, with preliminary screenings by specialized committees to ensure high-quality contenders. Ensuring the judging process is free from undue influence through measures …

Law, Language, And Authority: The Algorithmic Turn, Amanda Turnbull
Law, Language, And Authority: The Algorithmic Turn, Amanda Turnbull
PhD Dissertations
Law is formed by language and law utilizes language. Law is also like language in that it consists of social rules that aid in the structuring of society. From the time that we first put language into writing, we have been invested in the technologizing of language. There is a clear trajectory of our interest in having machines do things with language that we would otherwise do ourselves. This dissertation investigates how law’s relationship with language changes with the use of algorithmically driven technologies, and correspondingly, the consequences for the changing nature of authority since the use of language in …

Multimodal Data Integration For Oncology In The Era Of Deep Neural Networks: A Review, Asim Waqas, Aakash Tripathi, Ravi P. Ramachandran, Paul A. Stewart, Ghulam Rasool
Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research
Cancer research encompasses data across various scales, modalities, and resolutions, from screening and diagnostic imaging to digitized histopathology slides to various types of molecular data and clinical records. The integration of these diverse data types for personalized cancer care and predictive modeling holds the promise of enhancing the accuracy and reliability of cancer screening, diagnosis, and treatment. Traditional analytical methods, which often focus on isolated or unimodal information, fall short of capturing the complex and heterogeneous nature of cancer data. The advent of deep neural networks has spurred the development of sophisticated multimodal data fusion techniques capable of extracting and …

Takiri Ake Nga Haeata: Lighting A Path To Increased Indigenous Leadership In Aotearoa, Kaylee Ihimaera
Takiri Ake Nga Haeata: Lighting A Path To Increased Indigenous Leadership In Aotearoa, Kaylee Ihimaera
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis addresses the underrepresentation of indigenous Māori people in leadership positions and pursues the need to develop a Māori leadership framework aimed at empowering the next generation of indigenous people. Several frameworks have attempted to exhibit Māori leadership dynamics, each offering unique insights into the cultural and relational aspects of Māori leadership. However, existing frameworks often exhibit limitations in fully encapsulating the breadth of Māori leadership values and practices, necessitating the development of a comprehensive Māori leadership model independent of Western frameworks. Through an extensive review of existing literature and engaging with Māori experts, I synthesized key insights to …

Setting Up An Ambulatory Gi Endoscopy Suite In The Usa-Anesthesia And Sedation Challenges, Basavana Goudra
Department of Anesthesiology Faculty Papers
Gastrointestinal endoscopy units, both freestanding and associated with ambulatory surgical centers, are on the increase, and the trend is likely to continue. The concept is relatively new, and there are insufficient guidelines and a general dearth of information for prospective planners and physicians. Debate continues in areas such as the selection of patients, appropriateness of procedures, and access to tertiary care. Leaders often scramble to address both critical and non-critical issues, often after the center has opened to the public. They often encounter issues which were not anticipated. In this review, we have provided comprehensive and concise information on the …

Ultrasonic Cigarettes: Chemicals And Cytotoxicity Are Similar To Heated-Coil Pod-Style Electronic Cigarettes., Esther E. Omaiye, Wentai Luo, Kevin J. Mcwhirter, Prue Talbot
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Our purpose was to test the hypothesis that ultrasonic cigarettes (u-cigarettes), which operate at relatively low temperatures, produce aerosols that are less harmful than heated-coil pod-style electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes). The major chemicals in SURGE u-cigarette fluids and aerosols were quantified, their cytotoxicity and cellular effects were assessed, and a Margin of Exposure risk assessment was performed on chemicals in SURGE fluids. Four SURGE u-cigarette flavor variants ("Blueberry Ice," "Watermelon Ice," "Green Mint," and "Polar Mint") were evaluated. Flavor chemicals were quantified in fluids and aerosols using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Cytotoxicity and cell dynamics were assessed using the MTT assay, live-cell …

Infections are the leading cause of burn related deaths worldwide. These infections not only complicate micro-environment of a burn wound, but further obscure the wound due to the formation of biofilms at the wound site. Local drug delivery (LDD) has been a highly researched solution due to its advantages in locally treating and preventing infection while avoiding systemic side effects. LDD systems also have advantages for complex wounds, like burns. Chitosan is a natural polymer that is often used in these systems due to its biodegradability, biocompatibility and versatility. Previous research has suggested that short chain unsaturated fatty acids, for …

10-H2da Coating On Polyvinyl Chloride Catheter Biomaterials For Prevention Of Candida-Associated Urinary Tract Infections, Jermiah Tate
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Urinary catheters made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) are susceptible to microbial biofilm formation. 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid (10-H2DA) is a dispersal signaling molecule that inhibits biofilm and planktonic growth of microorganisms. This study hypothesized that coating PVC with 10-H2DA would inhibit planktonic and biofilm-associated Candida albicans. Interactions of the PVC and 10-H2DA molecules were analyzed using Video Contact Angle (VCA), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), and High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). Successful coating of PVC with 10-H2DA was demonstrated through a significantly lowered contact angle and FTIR peaks in regions indicative of the 10-H2DA on the surface of PVC. Elution data displays a burst …

The COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath have precipitated a marked increase in mental health needs among college students. Lockdowns, the sudden shift to remote learning, and social distancing mandates have compounded existing challenges, highlighting a trend that has evolved over the past two decades. Despite heightened demand for mental health support, colleges struggle to meet these needs amid the emotional aftermath of COVID-19 effectively. Recognizing the pivotal role of higher education institutions in shaping future leaders and addressing and enhancing the mental well-being of the college community is imperative to foster an environment conducive to learning and healing. Remimazolam And Its Place In The Current Landscape Of Procedural Sedation And General Anesthesia, Matthew Brohan, Janette Brohan, Basavana Goudra
Department of Anesthesiology Faculty Papers
Remimazolam was derived from its parent compound by adding an ester linkage into its structure so that the drug becomes a substrate for ester metabolism. As a result, it undergoes organ-independent ester hydrolysis, although the clinical benefits in terms of shorter recovery are not uniformly observed in clinical practice. Remimazolam is mainly tested in procedural sedation. In comparison to propofol, the current gold standard for procedural sedation, its proposed attractiveness is shorter wake-up times and a clear-headed recovery. Its clear advantages over propofol are better hemodynamic stability, lack of pain on injection and availability of a reversal agent in the …
