Teachers’ Use Of Differentiated Instructional Strategies To Support Students Of Low Socioeconomic Status, Cindi Van Petten
Teachers’ Use Of Differentiated Instructional Strategies To Support Students Of Low Socioeconomic Status, Cindi Van Petten
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The problem under investigation in this qualitative study was teachers’ inconsistent implementation of differentiated instructional strategies when teaching students of low socioeconomic status. The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate how elementary teachers implement differentiated instructional strategies to support students of low socioeconomic status. The conceptual framework was based on Jerome Bruner’s constructivist theory, the growth of mind, because symbolic representation helps students visualize the world and enhance experiences. The research questions investigate how teachers implement differentiated instructional strategies to support students of low socioeconomic status and how they believe training on differentiated instructional strategies to support students …

Enhancement Of Mechanical Properties Of Pcl/Pla/Dmso2 Composites For Bone Tissue Engineering, Kyung-Eun Min, Jae-Won Jang, Cheolhee Kim, Sung Yi
Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Bone tissue engineering shows potential for regenerating or replacing damaged bone tissues by utilizing biomaterials renowned for their biocompatibility and structural support capabilities. Among these biomaterials, polycaprolactone (PCL) and polylactic acid (PLA) have gained attention due to their biodegradability and versatile applications. However, challenges such as low degradation rates and poor mechanical properties limit their effectiveness. Dimethyl sulfone (DMSO2) has emerged as a potential additive to address these limitations, offering benefits such as reduced viscosity, increased degradation time, and enhanced surface tension. In this study, we investigate tailored composites comprising PLA, PCL, and DMSO2 to enhance mechanical …
Computational Modelling And Design Of Antibodies: Benefits From Analysis Of Their Unique Structural Motifs, Katherine M. Mccoy
Computational Modelling And Design Of Antibodies: Benefits From Analysis Of Their Unique Structural Motifs, Katherine M. Mccoy
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
The complexes that antibodies make with their binding partners, or antigens, are especially valuable to be able to predict and modify due to their unique role in the immune system. Yet, they present significant challenges to computational methods of both modelling and design. Antibodies are unlike most other proteins in that they are composed of a scaffold region, which is a highly conserved structure that is largely the same between antibodies of the same class, and Complementary Determining Regions (CDRs), which are comprised of hypervariable loops that largely determine their binding motifs. Additionally, antibodies and their antigens do not co-evolve …
Antimicrobials Produced By Ants: Chemical Properties And Microbe Specificity, Katy Chon
Antimicrobials Produced By Ants: Chemical Properties And Microbe Specificity, Katy Chon
Master's Theses
Antibiotic resistance is a growing public health concern worldwide, and for over a decade, we have been witnessing the growth of difficult to treat infectious diseases caused by bacteria that are becoming resistant to antibiotics. This resistance can be mostly related to the misusing and improper use of antibiotics in both humans and animals. To restore this problem, humans have turned to new sources for the production of antibiotics. In this study, we focused on using ants. Social insects, including ants and bees, have faced strong disease pressures during their evolution and have developed a range of methods to fight …

Mars' water history is fundamental to understanding Earth-like planet evolution. Water escapes to space as atoms, and hydrogen atoms escape faster than deuterium giving an increase in the residual D/H ratio. The present ratio reflects the total water Mars has lost. Observations with the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) spacecraft provide atomic densities and escape rates for H and D. Large increases near perihelion observed each martian year are consistent with a strong upwelling of water vapor. Short-term changes require processes in addition to thermal escape, likely from atmospheric dynamics and superthermal atoms. Including …

Alzheimer's disease (AD), a leading cause of dementia, is associated with significant respiratory dysfunctions. Our study explores the role of astrogliosis in the brainstem retrotrapezoid nucleus (RTN), a key breathing regulatory center, and its impact on breathing control and AD pathology in mice. Using Tg-2576 AD and wild-type mice, we investigated the effect of silencing the transforming growth factor-beta receptor II (TGFβR II) in the RTN. We performed behavioral tests, including the Barnes maze and novel object recognition test, along with whole-body plethysmography to assess breathing disorders. Our results showed that AD mice exhibited increased apneas and cognitive impairment, which …

High School Sport Participation: Effects On Students' Grit And Resilience, Rory Kekoa-Israel Waldman
Theses and Dissertations
Adolescence is a time of transition, growth, and identity exploration. Often this great time for growth is accompanied with an increase in stressors that can be detrimental to success and health, without the necessary coping mechanisms. It is a period of life where resilience and grit are extremely important. A post-traumatic growth definition for resilience allows for the possibility of a steeling effect, in which the resilience of an adolescent can grow and develop. Sport provides an ideal environment for the development of both grit and resilience by providing a safe environment for adversity to occur without detrimental consequences. In …

Alpha Angle And Anterior Femoral Neck Offset Identify Different Cohorts Of Cam Morphology: An Osteologic Study, Grigory A. Manyak
Alpha Angle And Anterior Femoral Neck Offset Identify Different Cohorts Of Cam Morphology: An Osteologic Study, Grigory A. Manyak
Faculty Scholarship
Purpose: To explore differences in cam morphology defined by alpha angle (AA) and anterior femoral neck offset (AFNO) in the context of other anthropometric parameters in an osteologic collection to further elucidate whether each measurement tool is identifying the same underlying pathology. Methods: Anthropometric measurements of 992 cadaveric hips from the Hamann-Todd Osteological Collection were analyzed. Femurs with cam morphology were identified by AA >55° or AFNO <7 mm. Anthropometric parameters stratified by cam morphology were assessed with Wilcoxon rank-sum and Pearson χ2 tests. Multivariate logistic regressions were performed on significant variables in univariate analysis to examine the predictive ability of anthropometric variables to cam morphology. Results: Cam morphology was identified in 242 hips via AA, 344 hips via AFNO, and 123 hips via both measures. Multivariate logarithmic regression analysis demonstrated that sex negatively predicted AA (females with less pathology, β = –0.14, P = .04), race negatively predicted AA (Blacks with less pathology, β = –0.21, P < .01), and proximal femoral osteoarthritis was positively associated with AA (β = 0.16, P = .02), while none of these were associated with AFNO. On the other hand, right-side specimens were associated with AA (β = 0.15, P = .02) and AFNO (β = 0.25, P < .01), whereas the combined version was unassociated with both measures. Conclusions: In conclusion, cam morphology was identified in a modest percentage of osteologic specimens by both AA and AFNO in our study. Further, associations of multiple demographic, anthropometric, and anatomical parameters to AA and AFNO suggest they may identify different subsets of cam morphology. Clinical Relevance: Cam morphology identified by AA versus AFNO may represent 2 different pathologic entities. Future studies should assess differences between these measures in a clinical cohort and determine whether these 2 definitions of cam morphology identify different clinical populations.

Cisplatin is a widely used anticancer drug with notable side effects including ototoxicity and nephrotoxicity. Macrophages, the major resident immune cells in the cochlea and kidney, are important drivers of both inflammatory and tissue repair responses. To investigate the roles of macrophages in cisplatin-induced toxicities, we used PLX3397, a U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved inhibitor of the colony-stimulating factor 1 receptor, to eliminate tissue-resident macrophages. Mice treated with cisplatin alone had considerable hearing loss (ototoxicity) and kidney injury (nephrotoxicity). Macrophage ablation resulted in significantly reduced hearing loss and had greater outer hair cell survival. Macrophage ablation also protected against cisplatin-induced …
Reconsidering The Test For Interlocutory Injunctions Affecting Homeless Encampments: A Critical Assessment Of Bc Case Law, Stepan Wood
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
Using a 2020 decision in which a judge granted an interlocutory injunction evicting a homeless encampment from an unused, unfenced, publicly-owned parking lot in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic as a springboard, I present the first comprehensive survey of British Columbia homeless encampment injunction decisions, revealing a whopping 85% success rate when governments seek interlocutory injunctions against encampments. The stakes are high: Interlocutory injunction applications dominate homeless encampment litigation, exposing encampment residents to continual displacement and elevated risks of isolation, illness, violence, and death. I argue that courts hearing applications for interlocutory injunctions against homeless encampments on publicly-owned land …

The hippocampus has a central role in regulating contextual processes in memory. We have shown that pharmacological inactivation of ventral hippocampus (VH) attenuates the context-dependence of signaled active avoidance (SAA) in rats. Here, we explore whether the VH mediates intertrial responses (ITRs), which are putative unreinforced avoidance responses that occur between trials. First, we examined whether VH inactivation would affect ITRs. Male rats underwent SAA training and subsequently received intra-VH infusions of saline or muscimol before retrieval tests in the training context. Rats that received muscimol performed significantly fewer ITRs, but equivalent avoidance responses, compared to controls. Next, we asked …

Tawdry Or Honourable? Additional Payments To Representative Plaintiffs In Ontario And Beyond, Suzanne Chiodo
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
Certain class action practices have always fit uncomfortably within the traditional model of civil litigation, not least the payment of honoraria (“additional payments”) to representative plaintiffs. This subject has received little attention in Canada and elsewhere. However, recent decisions in Ontario and the United States have put a spotlight on this practice. These decisions raise crucial questions about the purpose of such payments and the purposes of class actions generally. This article considers the doctrinal and theoretical basis for additional payments, and whether they should be permitted at all. It then proposes a structure for the awarding of additional payments, …
