Emotional Content In Working Memory Processes: An Fmri Study., Manal Zafar Aug 2024

Emotional Content In Working Memory Processes: An Fmri Study., Manal Zafar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Working memory (WM) is a dynamic system that processes and manipulates both goal-relevant and goal-irrelevant information, integral to higher-level cognition and executive control (Fujii, 2001; Nyberg & Erikkson, 2016). The processing and manipulation of representations is modulated by the affective nature of the information (Pessoa, 2009) such that negative information can either impair or enhance WM processing. WM impairments are seen commonly across clinical disorders such as depression, anxiety, PTSD and schizophrenia (Levens & Gotlib, 2010; Joorman et a., 2011; Brodziak et al., 2015). Specifically, negative information is known to have differential processing in WM compared to neutral and positive …

The aim of our study was to integrate the chronic stressor of Perceived Everyday Discrimination (PED) into the Hopelessness Theory of Depression with a focus on the comorbidity between physical and mental health by way of depressive symptoms and cortisol in adolescents. Research has shown that cognitive diatheses mediate the relation between stress and depressive symptoms and cortisol predicts depression. We hypothesized that Negative Attribution Style (NAS) and cortisol would mediate the relation between PED and depressive symptoms. Altogether, 99 adolescents (mean age: 14.10 years, 36.4% female; 63.6% male; ethnicity: 2% Latinx; 98.2 % non-Latinx; race: 41.4% Black, 34.8% White, …

Examining The Role Of Presence Of Meaning In Life On Wellbeing In Emerging Adulthood., Hannah K. Heitz Aug 2024

Examining The Role Of Presence Of Meaning In Life On Wellbeing In Emerging Adulthood., Hannah K. Heitz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Emerging adults face numerous challenges and stressors, such as financial stress, which often accompanies the experience of educational and occupational transitions. As such, it is important to identify personal resources, or protective factors, to help emerging adults buffer the experience of financial stress. Presence of meaning in life has been identified as a resource that can buffer the negative effects of stressors on wellbeing among adults and adolescents, yet there is little empirical evidence for its moderating effect among emerging adults. There is some evidence in the literature that suggests that emerging adults experience presence of meaning in life differently …

The Role Of Matrix Metalloproteinase-9 Gene Ablation In Preserving Ejection Fraction During Chronic Volume Overload-Induced Heart Failure., Oluwaseun Ebenezer Akinterinwa

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Heart failure is a prevalent cause of hospitalization globally, especially among older adults. The ejection fraction is a critical parameter in assessing and managing heart failure patients. As we age, the cardiovascular system undergoes changes that increase the risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. One of the most significant structural features that occur with age is reduced or impaired contractility of the left ventricular wall of the heart. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) play a crucial role in tissue remodeling, and their latency is linked with nitric oxide (NO). In the context of heart failure and constant stress, tissue remodeling leads to …

Racial Identity & Psychological Distress: The Mediating Role Of Sense Of Community And Spiritual Struggles Among Black Christians., Adebayo Ajibade

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Religious practice and church membership have historically been protective and critical in Black communities in the United States and across the African diaspora. Demographic studies have shown a consistent decline in religious adherence and practice across racial and ethnic groups in the United States. However, the decline in religious practice and participation in religious communities has been less pronounced among individuals of African descent. Participation in one’s religious community is often a source of positive social engagement and can foster positive intrapersonal outcomes (e.g., wellbeing). However, religious communities and religious practice can also be the source of conflict and emotional …

Unraveling The Complex Dynamics Of Cardiac Fibrosis: Ccn1 As A Novel Regulator Of Scar Collagen Architecture And Structural Integrity In Myocardial Infarction., Annalara Garland Fischer Aug 2024

Unraveling The Complex Dynamics Of Cardiac Fibrosis: Ccn1 As A Novel Regulator Of Scar Collagen Architecture And Structural Integrity In Myocardial Infarction., Annalara Garland Fischer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Expansion of the extracellular matrix (ECM), known as fibrosis, accompanies nearly all forms of cardiac disease; however, its most significant and complex manifestations arise following a myocardial infarction (MI). This process, principally led by fibroblasts, constitutes a necessary and adaptive response acutely to fill the void from cardiomyocyte necrosis following ischemic injury due to the heart’s lack of regenerative capacity. This acute response never fully resolves and contributes to ongoing collagen accumulation in non-infarcted regions, leading to diminished ventricular compliance, ongoing myocyte loss, and attrition in function—culminating in heart failure. Further, recent research demonstrates that concomitant with progressive increases in …

Thousands of unhoused Black men sleep, live and eat on the streets daily. Many lack the essential resources to survive through the elements. However, little is known about how unhoused Black men share space with the public, businesses, law enforcement and each other. Furthermore, little is known about how unhoused Black men access services once displacement has occurred. Drawing on participant observation and in-depth interviews, I examine how unhoused Black men navigate occupied urban spaces. I find that unhoused Black men regularly encounter contested spaces with businesses, the public, hospitals, and law enforcement. Additionally, unhoused Black men must navigate through …

Regulation And Mechanisms Of Ocular Dominance Plasticity At Cellular Resolution., Thomas Christopher Brown Aug 2024

Regulation And Mechanisms Of Ocular Dominance Plasticity At Cellular Resolution., Thomas Christopher Brown

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sensory systems throughout the brain require experience to aid in proper wiring during development. While forming, many sensory systems have periods of heightened sensitivity where alterations in the quality of experience can have a profound impact on cortical responses throughout life. These periods of heightened sensitivity have been coined critical periods. In the visual system of mice a critical period for ocular dominance has been well studied and defined between postnatal days nineteen and thirty-six. During this critical period, altering visual experience by suturing one eye closed called monocular deprivation (MD) shifts responses in cortex towards the non-deprived eye. Similar …

Health Professions Education And Critical Action Engagement: A Mixed Method Analysis., Leonda Richardson Aug 2024

Health Professions Education And Critical Action Engagement: A Mixed Method Analysis., Leonda Richardson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Poorer health outcomes disproportionately impact racial/ethnically minoritized (e.g., Black Indigenous People of Color, or BIPOC) populations in the U.S. One plausible reason for the persistence of poorer health outcomes among this population is the teaching of racialized curricular content within academic health professions programs. This includes the absence of appropriate context through explicit socio-political curricular content (SPC) and critical pedagogy (i.e., social and structural determinants of health, history of racism in health care, social justice concepts; dialogue and reflective writing). Racialized curriculum is thought to initiate and/or exacerbate existing racial biases, cultural incompetence, and perpetuate dominant medical ideologies and myths …

Examination Of Model Minority Myth, Mentorship, University Environment, And Sense Of Belonging On The Well-Being Of Asian American Undergraduate And Graduate Students., Stephanie Chin, Stephanie Chin Aug 2024

Examination Of Model Minority Myth, Mentorship, University Environment, And Sense Of Belonging On The Well-Being Of Asian American Undergraduate And Graduate Students., Stephanie Chin, Stephanie Chin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Even though Asian Americans continue to demonstrate academic excellence and have the highest rates of completion in higher education, their psychological well-being and the factors impacting it are often overlooked due to the model minority myth (Poon et al., 2016; Mahalingham, 2013). Higher education research mainly focuses on academic outcomes (e.g., persistence and retention) and less so on psychological outcomes. This study explored and examined psychosociocultural factors, specifically internalization of the model minority myth stereotype, mentorship, university environment, and sense of belonging on psychological (eudaimonic) well-being, in order to provide a more holistic and contextualized perspective of Asian American students’ …

Molecular Mechanisms Of Exercise-Stimulated Resolution Of Inflammation And Its Dietary Dependence., Ernesto H. Pena Calderin Aug 2024

Molecular Mechanisms Of Exercise-Stimulated Resolution Of Inflammation And Its Dietary Dependence., Ernesto H. Pena Calderin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Diet-induced obesity and adipose tissue (AT) inflammation that ensues sets the stage for systemic metabolic inflammation, disrupted insulin signaling, and eventual type 2 diabetes (T2D) development. At the center of this pathology lies a disruption in endogenous inflammation resolution pathways characterized by an imbalance in lipid mediator production (greater abundance of pro-inflammatory to pro-resolving lipids). Additionally, obese states are characterized by adrenergic deficiency, especially in response to physical activity. Inflammatory processes have been experimentally mitigated by either the pharmacological inhibition of pro-inflammatory signals (i.e., Leukotriene B4 (LTB4) and its receptor BLT1, which establishes a potent chemotactic stimulus …

Associations Of Natural Vegetation In Relation To Colorectal Cancer Hotspots And Colorectal Cancer Survival., Johnnie Newton Aug 2024

Associations Of Natural Vegetation In Relation To Colorectal Cancer Hotspots And Colorectal Cancer Survival., Johnnie Newton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Background: Across Kentucky, county-level geographic disparities in colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence and outcomes exist. Given the heterogeneity of lifestyle, socioeconomic (SES), and environmental factors within a county, more granular approaches should be used to identify local areas with a high CRC burden and identify the area-level factors that may contribute to geographic disparities. Studies reported that living in greener areas is associated with beneficial health outcomes, including lower mortality. Despite growing evidence that natural vegetation (greenness) exposure is associated with increased physical activity and obesity, two well-known CRC risk factors, epidemiological studies investigating the association of residential greenness exposure with …
