In Pursuit Of Eye Tracking For Visual Landscape Assessments, David Evans, Brent Chamberlain
In Pursuit Of Eye Tracking For Visual Landscape Assessments, David Evans, Brent Chamberlain
Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning Faculty Publications
Visual quality and impact assessments have historically relied on experts to formally evaluate the visual properties of a landscape. In contrast, environmental psychologists have studied subjective landscape preferences using ratings and surveys. These two approaches represent, respectively, the “objectivist” and “subjectivist” paradigms within visual landscape research. A gap, however, exists between these approaches: actual observation behaviors. In this paper, we argue for the inclusion of eye-tracking research in visual landscape assessments as a critical bridge between objective landscape qualities and subjective visual experiences. We describe the basics of eye-tracking methods and data types to introduce the role of eye movements …

National Bowel Cancer Screening Program: Western Australian General Practice Follow-Up Processes Of Positive Immunochemical Faecal Occult Blood Test Results, Caroline E. Bulsara, Diane Arnold-Reed, Jane Gaspar, Karen Taylor, Anne Williams
Nursing Research Reports
The National Bowel Cancer Screening Program (NBCSP) aims to maximise the early detection of bowel cancer through immunochemical Faecal Occult Blood Test (iFOBT) screening. This report details findings of a project that investigated the management of patients who return positive +iFOBTs through the program within Western Australian (WA) general practice settings. The specific objectives were to i) explore processes used by WA general practitioner (GPs) to follow-up NBCSP participants with a +iFOBT; and ii) gain insight into the effectiveness of these current approaches to improve the program and guide future projects. The project utilised an explanatory, sequential mixed method design …

Correlates Of The Ego Impairment Index In An Adolescent Inpatient Sample, Marisa Caponi
Correlates Of The Ego Impairment Index In An Adolescent Inpatient Sample, Marisa Caponi
ETD Collection
The Ego Impairment Index-3 (EII-3), a composite variable of psychopathology that can be computed from a valid Rorschach protocol, is the latest version of the EII found to demonstrate psychometric superiority and sound interrater reliability across studies of child, adolescent, and adult populations (Viglione et al., 2011). Research has documented that one’s EII-3 score reveals information regarding personality functioning that is not otherwise accessible through clinical observation, interview, or self-report measures. Still, guidelines for effective interpretation of EII-3 scores remain essential to yielding clinically relevant inferences and are especially of interest in adolescent populations of psychiatric severity. This study investigated …
Sustainable Development Of Private Art Museums In China: A Narrative Inquiry Study, Chaoran Li
Sustainable Development Of Private Art Museums In China: A Narrative Inquiry Study, Chaoran Li
Education (PhD) Dissertations
Private art museums are a relatively new phenomenon in China, having first appeared in the 20th century. This brief timeline in the larger history of art museums, coupled with the fact most Chinese private art museums close after just a few years of operation, has led many to question how to promote the sustainability of these institutions. These questions became even more pronounced with the onset of the COVID-19 global pandemic, which brought a greater sense of uncertainty to the museum industry and society at large. This dissertation inquires similarly, asking how sustainability is conceptualized by Chinese private art museum …
Developing A Controlled Traffic (Tramline) Farming System, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia
Developing A Controlled Traffic (Tramline) Farming System, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia
Grains and other field crops factsheets
Controlled traffic farming (CTF) is a farming system built on permanent wheel tracks where the crop zone and traffic lanes are permanently separated. It can improve profitability and sustainability.
Implements for seeding, spraying, spreading and harvesting have a particular span, or multiple of it, and all wheel tracks are confined to specific traffic lanes.
CTF increases profit by more yield, better grain quality, improved operation timeliness, and reduced costs. The environment can improve, with less nutrient leaching, less water erosion, better water infiltration, and less greenhouse gas emission. Implementation needs a clear, long-term plan, and prioritisation of soil health.

School Shootings In The United States: An Analysis Of Micro And Macro Level Variables, Vineeth Vijayan
School Shootings In The United States: An Analysis Of Micro And Macro Level Variables, Vineeth Vijayan
All Dissertations
In 2023, by November 2, there had been 45 school shootings resulting in fatalities and injuries (Matthews, 2023). There were 193 shooting incidents in preschools and K–12 schools during the previous school year, which is greater than an average of 49 incidents each school year since 2013 (Everytown Research & Policy, 2022). This predictive quantitative study offers a comprehensive analysis of various state-level, school-level, and individual-level variables, such as the laws related to guns, access to mental health services, economics, type of school shooting, socio-demographic indicators, school type, and timing of the incident toward informing effective preventative policies. It utilized …

Because of the first observations in the 1900s of the oligotrophic and eutrophic states of lakes, researchers have been interested in the process that makes lakes become turbid because of high phytoplankton biomass. Definitions of eutrophication have multiplied and diversified since the mid-20th century, more than for any other ecological process. Reasons for the high number of definitions might be that the former ones did not sufficiently describe their causes and/or consequences. Global change is bringing eutrophication more into the spotlight than ever, highlighting the need to find consensus on a common definition, or at least to explain and clarify …

Loss-on-ignition (LOI) has been widely used to estimate soil organic carbon (OC) content for coastal wetland soils, owing to recent interest in ‘blue carbon’ systems. Comparatively less attention has been paid to soil nutrient retention, specifically total nitrogen (TN), despite being a historically limited resource that influences C cycling and aquatic ecosystem health. A single conversion equation is available to estimate soil TN content from LOI, derived from salt marshes. This study investigated the utility of creating TN conversion equations from LOI data for application in mangrove soils to improve global understanding of their role in TN interception and sequestration. …

Paediatrics and Child Health, East Africa
Introduction: Children with moderate or severe wasting are at particularly high risk of recurrent or persistent diarrhoea, nutritional deterioration and death following a diarrhoeal episode. Lactoferrin and lysozyme are nutritional supplements that may reduce the risk of recurrent diarrhoeal episodes and accelerate nutritional recovery by treating or preventing underlying enteric infections and/or improving enteric function.
Methods and analysis: In this factorial, blinded, placebo-controlled randomised trial, we aim to determine the efficacy of lactoferrin and lysozyme supplementation in decreasing diarrhoea incidence and improving nutritional recovery in Kenyan children convalescing from comorbid diarrhoea and wasting. Six hundred children aged 6–24 months with …

Privacy Mismanagement: Privacy Harms, Digital Market Monopolies, And Antitrust Law, Kristie Lam
Privacy Mismanagement: Privacy Harms, Digital Market Monopolies, And Antitrust Law, Kristie Lam
UC Law Journal
Privacy self-management fails to protect consumer privacy. In the advent of the Internet, individuals had the option to tailor how their personal data was used throughout digital markets. However, since the digital markets are dominated by a few large conglomerates, namely Meta and Google, consumers have little choice to determine how they will use the internet in the face of the blatantly decreasing quality of privacy protection. The lack of adequate privacy protections in the digital markets harms consumers and erodes democratic institutions. Given the societal ramifications of consolidated digital markets on consumers, antitrust laws are the appropriate mechanism to …
Brd4 Mediates Tgf-Beta-Induced Vascular Smooth Muscle Cell Differentiation, Sana Petkar
Brd4 Mediates Tgf-Beta-Induced Vascular Smooth Muscle Cell Differentiation, Sana Petkar
Biotechnology Theses
Vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) differentiation is an essential component of vascular development. Vascular smooth muscle cells do not terminally differentiate, the regulatory factors modulate their phenotype between proliferative and differentiated states, which is a major factor contributing to vascular diseases like atherosclerosis, aneurysms, hypertension, etc. Transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) family is highly conserved in mammals and plays an essential role in VSMC differentiation. The canonical TGF-β pathway is propagated by phosphorylation of receptor-associated Smad proteins (R-Smads) following TGF-β stimulation.Bromodomain-containing protein 4 (BRD4) is a protein encoded by the BRD4 gene in humans. BRD4 is novel epigenetic modulator that …

Essays On Aging, Health, And Labor Market, Lanjie Wang
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
This dissertation consists of four chapters on aging, health, and labor economics.
In the first chapter, we investigate the short-term impacts of unemployment on older workers in Singapore, a setting without public unemployment insurance. Using monthly panel data, we analyze dynamic impacts on income, spending, health, and subjective well-being over two years post-unemployment. We find substantial initial earnings losses with incomplete recovery, with income remaining 46.5% below pre-unemployment levels after 24 months. Despite this persistent income gap, consumption responses are modest and comparable to countries with strong social safety nets, suggesting robust self-insurance mechanisms. We observe increased retirement among married …

ATU Faculty OER Books and Materials
This book adopts a "20,000-foot view" approach, offering an essential understanding of emergency management without delving into operational specifics. It doesn't detail day-to-day practices of emergency management offices. Instead, it paints a high-level portrait of the field's core principles. This approach equips readers with a broad framework—a canvas onto which they can later add layers of specialized knowledge.

Spirituality And Self-Management Of Diabetes Among African American Women, Tiaa Reshawn Padgette
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Spirituality plays an important role of support for many people; however, little is known about the role spirituality plays in helping manage chronic conditions such as type 2 diabetes (T2D). African American women (AAW) have the highest incidence of T2D compared to other racial and ethnic groups, which demonstrates the need to learn more about improving health and reducing diabetes in AAW. The purpose of this qualitative narrative inquiry, using Roy’s adaptation model as the theoretical framework, was to assess the role of spirituality in how AAW with T2D manage their illness and whether that role changes according to disease …

Function over form: the benefits of aspen for Greater Sage-grouse
Michel T. Kohl, Associate Professor of Wildlife Management and Wildlife Extension Specialist, University of Georgia
David Dahlgren, Associate Professor and Rangeland Wildlife Extension Specialist, Utah State University
Sage-grouse, and their elaborate springtime breeding displays, are an icon of Western landscapes. Yet, sage-grouse (a sagebrush obligate species) have been facing decades-long declines due to the loss of habitat. Historically, the species ranged across 13 western states and two Canadian provinces. Today, they occur across < 50% of that range, and abundance has declined 80% since 1965 and almost 40% since 2002. Despite this, it was determined in 2015 that the sage-grouse did not warrant Endangered Species protection due to the strength of wide-spread collaborative conservation actions.

Detection Of Cryptosporidium Spp. In Surface Water And Tissues Of Bivalves In Waterways Of Coney Island, New York (Usa), Manasvi Patel
Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
Combined sewer overflows (CSOs) are major sources of pollutants such as microbial pathogens, total suspended solids (TSS), oxygen depleting substances, toxicants, and nutrients. Untreated wastewater contains parasites like Giardia, Cryptosporidium and Entamoeba which impact human health. Cryptosporidium is the leading cause of diarrheal diseases which spreads through contaminated water supplies. Our research on Coney Island in Brooklyn investigated the amount of Cryptosporidium oocysts found in the water and bivalves/shellfish tissue and to supports a parallel study examining both people's use of waterways around Coney Island (for religious ceremonies, fishing, foraging, swimming, etc.) and their perceptions of how polluted the …

Despite considerable efforts, progress in the implementationof sexuality education (SE) has been uneven. This study identi-fied six “positive-deviant” low- and middle-income countries,i.e., countries that had scaled up, sustained and enhancedtheir SE programs when many others—in similar social, cul-tural and economic circumstances—were not able to do so. Inother words, they were significantly and consistently moresuccessful than the norm. Countries were shortlisted using avalidated framework and were analyzed using three other vali-dated frameworks on political priority setting, scaling up, andstakeholder engagement. The study found that India, Pakistan,Nigeria, Senegal, Mexico, and Uruguay had scaled up (eithernationwide or in some states/provinces), sustained andenhanced their …
