Structural And Interpersonal Determinants Of Covid-19 Vaccine Uptake In Vulnerable Populations Of The United States, Alyea Wood

Capstone Showcase

Since its introduction in late 2020, the uptake of the COVID-19 vaccine has had the lowest rates in marginalized populations like minorities, elderly, and those of low socioeconomic status. Decreased rates of vaccination uptake in these groups has resulted in increased burden of disease and subsequently higher rates of hospitalization and death. Many inequities in poor COVID-19 health outcomes can be explained by examining common predictive factors that determine vaccination rates in these United States populations. This special article research aims to explore these various predictive factors with the goal to provide targeted strategies to boost COVID-19 vaccination rates, especially …

Adjusting To The Rising Prevalence Of Colorectal Cancer Amongst Young Adults, Stephanie Wang

Capstone Showcase

Colorectal Cancer (CRC) is the second most prevalent cause of cancer-related death, with the highest incidence in middle-age and elderly populations [1]. However in America, there is a rising incidence rate of colorectal cancer amongst individuals under 45 years of age, leading to early-onset colorectal cancer (EOCRC [2]). From all cancers studied from 2010-2019, gastrointestinal cancers had an increase in incidence rate of 14.80%, making it the fastest-growing among all early-onset cancers [2]. Patients with EOCRC have a higher likelihood of misdiagnosis and metastasis, leading to higher rates of mortality [1]. Additionally, many patients suffering from EOCRC are uninsured minority …

Breaking The Chains: An Exploration Of The Effectiveness Of Cbt On Violent Vs. Nonviolent Offenders, Emma E. Sheppleman

Capstone Showcase

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a well known and common form of theory used to treat a variety of disorders. Our criminal justice system has tried and failed at rehabilitating offenders through a punishment-based approach. CBT opens the door to a treatment approach that actually reduces recidivism. Specifically, this research aims to look at the varying effects that CBT has on violent vs nonviolent offenders. Different types of CBT yield differing effects for violent and nonviolent offenders, with some benefitting one more than the other. Looking at the integrity of the CBT program is an important component to keep in mind …

Recommendations For Diagnosis And Treatment Of Functional Hypothalamic Amenorrhea In Females Of Reproductive Age, Monica Foster Jan 2025

Recommendations For Diagnosis And Treatment Of Functional Hypothalamic Amenorrhea In Females Of Reproductive Age, Monica Foster

Capstone Showcase

Hypothalamic amenorrhea (HA) accounts for approximately 30% of total cases of secondary amenorrhea in women of reproductive age. HA is defined as the absence of menses due to inadequate secretion of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) by the hypothalamus leading to lack of secretion of gonadotropins from the anterior pituitary gland and steroid hormones from the ovaries. This feedback loop, called the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, regulates reproductive activity in animals and humans. When this system is disrupted in females due to a hormonal imbalance, menstrual abnormalities may emerge. Functional hypothalamic amenorrhea (FHA) is defined as the absence of menses in which anatomic …

Depression remains a significant public health challenge in the U.S., affecting millions of adults and contributing to both psychological and financial burdens. Major depressive disorder impacts approximately 14.5 million U.S. adults, with about 30% of cases classified as treatment-resistant depression. Traditional antidepressant therapies, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, often have delayed onset and limited efficacy, leaving a substantial portion of patients without adequate relief. Given these limitations, there is an urgent need for alternative treatment options.

Recent research has highlighted ketamine as a promising intervention for Major Depressive Disorder and Treatment Resistant Depression. Initially identified as …

Integrating Deconstruction And Historic Preservation: A Best Practices Policy Comparison, Kelsey M. Baldwin Jan 2025

Integrating Deconstruction And Historic Preservation: A Best Practices Policy Comparison, Kelsey M. Baldwin

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

Carl Elefante, the former president of the American Institute of Architects, famously said, “The greenest building is…one that is already built” (Elefante, 2012). Elefante articulated the environmental benefits of reuse and the significant energy costs associated with demolition and new construction. In 2022, the commercial and residential building sectors produced 31% of the United States’ greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (EPA, 2025). A large percentage of this is tied to the production of building materials.

Managing Kentucky's Coal Severance Tax Decline: Lessons From Other States, Ryan Reed Jan 2025

Managing Kentucky's Coal Severance Tax Decline: Lessons From Other States, Ryan Reed

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

Governments levy severance taxes on the extraction of natural resources such as coal, oil, and natural gas. This can be a substantial source of revenue for these entities, but overreliance on this has led to what is now known through extensive research as the so-called ‘resource curse’. This has been observed to create political instability, corruption, and repression within resource-rich areas. Additionally, it cripples the ability of the area to pursue future non-resource related economic development after the resource is depleted. A Sovereign Wealth Fund has been touted as one such solution to bridge this gap as an intergenerational wealth …

Targeted Federal Advocacy For Financial Stability: Recommendations For United Way Of The Bluegrass, Jefferson Abney, Lou Hurst

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

Advocacy refers to activities undertaken with the intent of influencing policy change. For nonprofit organizations, advocacy can be a critical aspect of furthering their mission. Successful advocacy requires a comprehensive, dynamic understanding of the needs and priorities of stakeholders, as well as an understanding of the political context in which the organization operates and the challenges and opportunities that context poses for its institutional goals. A policy agenda helps nonprofit organizations identify and communicate the most pertinent policy needs for consideration when making decisions around advocacy.

For this project, in response to a request from United Way of The Bluegrass …

Mortgage Lending Discrimination: Racial Differences In A Post-Covid Society, Zachary Owen Jan 2025

Mortgage Lending Discrimination: Racial Differences In A Post-Covid Society, Zachary Owen

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

Researchers have studied the disparities of the mortgage lending process extensively, but their research fails to examine the process following the COVID-19 pandemic. Throughout the aftermath of the pandemic, home sale prices increased, interest rates rose, and rental costs skyrocketed. As such, the housing landscape changed drastically, and research must be conducted to assess new trends and relationships. In this report, I will estimate the relationship between applicant characteristics, such as race, debt-to-income ratio, and income and the outcome of their mortgage loan application and their expected credit score. Prior to COVID-19, Black and White applicants for mortgage loans were …

Reforming Need: How Certificate Of Need Laws In North Carolina Can Be Reformed To Promote Rural To Regional Health Network Integration, Taylor Fulk Jan 2025

Reforming Need: How Certificate Of Need Laws In North Carolina Can Be Reformed To Promote Rural To Regional Health Network Integration, Taylor Fulk

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

Across North Carolina, many rural hospitals are facing closures, staffing shortages, and financial turmoil. Many hospitals, such as Morehead Hospital in Eden, NC (now UNC Rockingham), have utilized mergers with larger regional networks (e.g., UNC Health, Duke, Novant, Atrium) to stabilize operations and preserve local access to care. (deBruyn, 2017). However, even after successful integration efforts to bring some rural hospitals into larger regional networks, Certificate of Need laws in North Carolina are preventing these smaller, rural integrated hospitals from expanding their service offerings, thereby driving up healthcare expenditures for residents. As a result, patients experience longer-than-normal travel times and …

Caspases Protect Against Hyperglycemia Induced Necroptosis-Like Cell Death In Brain Endothelial Cells, Aleena S. Mathew Jan 2025

Caspases Protect Against Hyperglycemia Induced Necroptosis-Like Cell Death In Brain Endothelial Cells, Aleena S. Mathew

Theses and Dissertations

Acute diabetes characterized by high spikes in blood glucose levels in association with severe hyperglycemia can lead to an increased risk of ischemic stroke in the brain. To better understand high blood glucose levels, hyperglycemia, in the brain we explored its effects on endothelial cells. Endothelial cells line the inner walls of blood vessels and are directly impacted in hyperglycemia. Brain endothelial cells are a major component of the blood brain barrier (BBB) which tightly regulates the brain’s microenvironment. The type of cell death such as apoptosis, caspase dependent, or necroptosis, caspase independent, can exacerbate diabetes associated complications. There is …

Commentary On Capture, Redesign, Release: Market Structure Or Charter Structure In Vice Markets?, Zephyr Teachout Jan 2025

Commentary On Capture, Redesign, Release: Market Structure Or Charter Structure In Vice Markets?, Zephyr Teachout

Faculty Scholarship

This essay evaluates Taparia and Buchanan’s proposal to address the social costs of addiction-driven industries through a “capture, redesign, release” framework, under which government would exercise eminent domain to acquire tobacco firms and restructure them as purpose-driven corporations. The commentary argues that, while innovative, the proposal raises serious constitutional and corporate law concerns. First, the reliance on eminent domain is vulnerable under the Takings Clause, particularly given the Roberts Court’s likely skepticism toward expansive readings of Kelo v. City of New London. Second, the plan to prohibit corporate marketing and lobbying as part of a redesigned charter would almost …

"The Only Place I'M Allowed In The City Is Court": Racial Capitalism, Gentrification, And The Criminalization Of Homelessness In Missoula, Montana, River Rafferty Jan 2025

"The Only Place I'M Allowed In The City Is Court": Racial Capitalism, Gentrification, And The Criminalization Of Homelessness In Missoula, Montana, River Rafferty

Scripps Senior Theses

This thesis dissects how gentrification, homelessness, and criminalization intersect and influence one another, using Missoula, Montana's recent urban camping ban as a case study.

It argues that racial capitalism, as a hermeneutic, structures the logics of Missoula's Ordinance 3747 and that gentrification, as a manifestation of racial capitalism, creates a structural imperative for the criminalization of homelessness. In addition, it asserts that local community organizations such as the Missoula Tenants Union and the Missoula Unhoused Neighbors Union offer viable alternatives to the current carceral organization of public policy, orienting space in the city toward what Ruth Wilson Gilmore terms abolition …

Selling Egg-Cellence: An Exploration Of Commercial Oocyte Donation And Genetic Determinism In 21st Century America, Abigail C. Oswald Jan 2025

Selling Egg-Cellence: An Exploration Of Commercial Oocyte Donation And Genetic Determinism In 21st Century America, Abigail C. Oswald

Scripps Senior Theses

This thesis examines the impact of genetic determinism on commercial egg donation in the United States. Through critical analysis of social media advertisements, online forums, and interviews, it argues that reductionist, genetically deterministic thinking drives the commodification of oocytes. Fertility agencies exploit assumptions about heritable traits (health, ethnicity, intelligence) to market "desirable" donors, influencing intended parents' choices and compensation hierarchies. Then the research explores how these same ideas shape perceptions of familial closeness in donor-conceived individuals and their parents, revealing mixed feelings surrounding genetic ties. This study highlights the complex interplay of biology, technology, and social constructs in defining family …

Cultural Factors Associated With Parenting Practices And Wellbeing Among Pakistani Immigrants, Yumna Khan Jan 2025

Cultural Factors Associated With Parenting Practices And Wellbeing Among Pakistani Immigrants, Yumna Khan

Honors Program Theses

Immigrant parents experience many challenges when shifting to a new culture, such as rearing children in a culture different from the one in which they were reared. Adjusting to a new culture is associated with aspects of parental wellbeing and the parenting practices that they adopt (Murthy, 2024). This has been studied widely among immigrant parents, but not among Pakistani immigrants. The present descriptive study aimed to address the following questions among a sample of Pakistani immigrant participants (N = 61): 1) What parenting practices and values are embraced by Pakistani immigrant parents and to what extent are these values …
