Western Journal of Orthopaedics
Making up 1.5% to 4.0% of all fractures, radial head and neck fractures are typically treated based on the severity of angulation at the radial neck or if range of motion (ROM) is blocked. In this study, we present a case of a 43-year old woman with a Mason Type 2 radial neck fracture, successfully treated with closed reduction and one week of immobilization, resulting in near anatomic radial neck angulation without the need for operative intervention. Knee infection caused by Aspergillus is a rare condition that presents a diagnostic challenge for orthopaedic surgeons and musculoskeletal specialists. This case report aims to describe the treatment of a patient with active articular Aspergillus infection and knee arthrofibrosis through a two-stage total knee arthroplasty (TKA). A 37-year old woman presented with knee arthrofibrosis, which was complicated by an Aspergillus infection. The treatment involved a two-stage procedure: 1) bone cuts for TKA and systemic antibiotic therapy; and 2) TKA with the use of specific antibiotic-loaded cement. The patient has been followed for 30 months, showing no signs of failure.

This report documents a unique, successful strategy to manage a failed anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) in the setting of coronal and sagittal plane malalignment. The patient is a 38-year-old man with a history of a failed ACLR who presented with recurrent knee instability. Imaging revealed a posterior tibial slope (PTS) of 17° complicated by a varus malalignment of 10°. A single-stage anterior and lateral closing wedge tibial osteotomy (biplanar) with simultaneous revision anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction was performed. Also known as popliteal cysts, Baker’s cysts are fluid-filled lesions found in the popliteal fossa, typically originating from the gastrocnemius-semimembranosus bursa. While these cysts are relatively common in adults, with a prevalence ranging from 5.0% to 41.0%, they are extremely rare in children, showing an incidence of just 2.4%. In most cases, Baker’s cysts result from intra-articular knee pathologies that lead to an increased production and sequestration of synovial fluid. The congenital absence of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) is an extremely rare condition, with an estimated prevalence of 0.017 per 1,000 live births for ACL agenesis. The authors present the case of a 15-year-old adolescent girl with autosomal dominant multiple synostosis, who developed progressive bilateral knee pain and functional limitations. Bilateral knee x-rays revealed trochlear dysplasia and an absent tibial eminence, suggesting a congenital ligamentous abnormality. Diabetes mellitus (DM) continues to escalate as a worldwide health emergency issue, with approximately 537 million adults currently diagnosed and forecasts estimating a further increase to 643 million by 2030. Early and precise foretelling of DM remains a decisive factor for timely intervention, thereby mitigating severe downstream sequelae such as cardiovascular disease, peripheral neuropathy, and diabetic retinopathy (DR). Populations of zoo-managed African elephant (Loxodonta Africana) exhibit substantial individual- and population-level variation in reproductive success, yet research has largely focused on females, leaving male fertility poorly understood. Subfertility in bulls, characterized by low libido and inconsistent semen quality, poses significant challenges to genetic management and long-term population sustainability. Sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas Lam) leaves contain higher concentrations of phenolic compounds, flavonoids, and carotenoids that are remarkable in health promotion. However, the nutrient content in sweetpotato leaves varies from variety to variety, and leaf shape and color are the key identifying factors for the varietal classification of sweetpotatoes. Full-endoscopic resection has emerged as a minimally invasive alternative to microsurgical approaches. Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a progressive, obstructive, and inflammatory process affecting the endothelial lining of the coronary arteries, which ultimately compromises the perfusion of the myocardium and can lead to ischemic infarction. This narrowing of vasculature which supplies the myocardial tissue leads to a spectrum of anginal syndromes and inevitably, catastrophic consequences. This article is focused on understanding the pathophysiology of this disease process and educating providers on emerging clinical tools that can be utilized to prevent progression, and ultimately reduce morbidity and mortality of this insidious disease process.

Racial disparities within the criminal justice system continue to be a pressing issue, especially after the recent passage of California’s Racial Justice Act, which allows for a broader set of legal challenges based on racially disparate treatment. In this article, we analyze data for almost four million stops by California’s fifteen largest law enforcement agencies in 2019, examining the extent to which people of color experience searches, enforcement, intrusiveness, and use of force differently from white people. Black Californians are more likely to be searched than white Californians, but searches of Black civilians reveal less contraband and evidence. Black people …

Empathy is a critical component that allows providers to build a trusting relationship with patients, which ultimately improves patient empowerment and outcomes. This paper will examine the barriers healthcare professionals face in delivering empathetic care, explore how empathy improves patient care, and discuss strategies for cultivating and sustaining empathy in clinical settings. Within modern health systems, empathy is challenged by time constraints, provider burnout, and training gaps. Without empathy, patient outcomes and workplace culture suffer. Male infertility impacts up to 15% of men and contributes significantly to worldwide infertility.1 A multifaceted issue with etiologies from before, after or during spermatogenesis. It includes hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis dysfunction, genetic abnormalities, congenital malformations, systemic illnesses and environmental factors.2 The evaluation of male infertility considers contributing factors and interconnections with broader health issues. Pre-testicular factors discussed include Klinefelter syndrome, Y-chromosome microdeletions, hyperprolactinemia, thyroid dysfunction, obesity, diabetes mellitus, nutrition, pharmaceuticals and lifestyle. Colorectal Cancer (CRC) is the second most prevalent cause of cancer-related death, with the highest incidence in middle-age and elderly populations [1]. However in America, there is a rising incidence rate of colorectal cancer amongst individuals under 45 years of age, leading to early-onset colorectal cancer (EOCRC [2]). From all cancers studied from 2010-2019, gastrointestinal cancers had an increase in incidence rate of 14.80%, making it the fastest-growing among all early-onset cancers [2].
