Reflections And Gratitude: The Journal Of Food Law & Policy From A Twenty-Year Perspective, Margie Alsbrook

Articles

Twenty years after the Journal of Food Law & Policy published its first issue, I find myself looking back with deep gratitude for the people who helped create it, for the students who sustained it, and for the community that continues to make it thrive. What began as an untested idea has grown into a respected publication and a cornerstone of a still-growing field. This essay is both a reflection on that journey and a heartfelt thank-you to everyone who made it possible.

Rahimi And The Future Of (The Rest Of) The Protection Order Prohibition, Bonnie Carlson

Articles

In the summer of 2024, the Supreme Court considered United States v. Rahimi. Scholars and lawyers watched with bated breath to see how the court would interpret and apply the foundation-shifting Second Amendment test it established in New York State Rifle & Pistol Ass’n v. Bruen two years earlier. Ultimately, the Court upheld the federal law which temporarily bans some protection order respondents from possessing firearms. But the Court provided little in the way of additional guidance that lower courts desperately needed as evidenced by the disparate outcomes on gun cases nationwide following Bruen. Rather, the Court opted for a …

Psychotropic medication use among youth in foster care has been a longstanding concern in child welfare research, with studies consistently documenting disproportionately high prescribing rates, frequent polypharmacy, and the use of potent or off-label medications to manage behavioral or trauma-related symptoms. This study conducted an inductive thematic review of 17 peer-reviewed articles, including qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-method studies, to explore the lived experiences of foster youth and foster care alumni related to psychotropic medication use and mental health treatment. Guided by principles of reflexive thematic analysis, findings across diverse methodologies were synthesized to better understand how systemic, clinical, and experiential …

White matter disease, a broad-spectrum term that covers various types of white matter lesions and degeneration, is strongly related to age-related neurodegenerative disorders including Alzheimer’s disease (AD), and vascular contributions to cognitive impairment and dementia (VCID) and Alzheimer’s related dementias (ADRD). There is no specific treatment for white matter disease. Therefore, basic research and clinical studies are essential for future outcomes. Since its formation in 2020, the Albert Research Institute for White Matter and Cognition (ARIWMC) mission has been to support white matter research by providing a forum for communication where basic and clinical scientists meet to discuss and debate …

Pediatric Occupational Therapists' Perception Of How Nature-Based Play Affects Fine Motor Development, Abbi M. Rosenow, Donia P. Timby, Jacquelyn D. Wiersma-Mosley, Amanda Terrell

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

This study explored the benefits of nature-based pediatric occupational therapy (OT) and the influence of nature and nature-based play on fine motor development. It was hypothesized that nature and nature-based play would positively impact a child’s fine motor skills (FMS) and that nature-based OT would offer unique benefits to a child’s therapeutic experience. To examine these relationships, a survey was distributed to pediatric occupational therapists (OTs) across the United States. The survey was designed to gather insights into how OT supports fine motor development, how nature-based play/therapy enhances these skills, and the perceived benefits of incorporating nature into therapeutic practices. …

In the wake of the Supreme Court’s opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the authors of this Article offer a practical, collaborative response to a seemingly intractable, divisive issue. Kirk and Hanlon draw on their academic expertise in law and social science, respectively, to address the paradox of the general esteem for the institution of adoption alongside the rarity with which adoption is chosen. In this Article, they examine social science data and literature on women’s pregnancy decision-making in order to explain the need for laws and policies that promote informed choice. They introduce never-before-published survey data and …

Following the full implementation of all sections of the Children First Act in 2015, a dedicated Child Protection and Safeguarding Inspection model was introduced in Irish schools. This inspection model was developed as part of the ‘oversight’ arrangements of the legislation and, as with other inspection models developed in schools, the inspection reports are publicly available on the Department of Education website. Since 2019, 105 final child protection and safeguarding reports in the primary sector are available. This paper reviews the findings of the evaluation reports. It outlines the challenges schools have faced, particularly in terms of the record keeping …

In 1765, enslaved Africans boarded the Roi Guinguin in Badagry as part of a restitution agreement between a Nantesian slave trading company and an African ruler. These captive Africans endured treacherous journeys from West Africa’s interior to Badagry, then Príncipe, then toward Saint Domingue before being rerouted to Cayenne in Guyane (French Guiana), and then the Îles du Salut for a smallpox quarantine. The captain of the Roi Guinguin and French imperial officials’ fears of smallpox outbreaks and other contagious diseases prompted them to halt and reroute the voyage to refreshment centers and quarantines along the West African and South …

Right Not To Work: Unions And Title Vii, Seth C. Oranburg

Scholarly Articles

On June 29, 2023, the Supreme Court of the United States issued the landmark decision of Groff v. DeJoy. Groff will probably be remembered for reversing the Court's 1977 decision of TWA v. Hardison, even though the majority claimed to merely be clarifying that precedent. Hardison seemed to interpret Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as amended in 1972, such that employers do not have to make accommodations that have a de minimis cost. Groff restored the original meaning to Title VII. Groff held that "Title VII means what it says." And Title VII says …

Acute Hepatitis B Infection In A Patient With Confirmed Immunity On Long-Acting Cabotegravir/Rilpivirine, William K B Boateng, Neil Carlin, Etan Spira, Maria E Szabela, Kosisochukwu J Ezeh

Faculty and Staff Publications

Long-acting injectable formulation of cabotegravir/rilpivirine (CAB/RPV) is a promising novel maintenance therapy for HIV infection. However, coinfection with active hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a contraindication to initiating this therapy. Despite guidelines, patients with HBV immunity can still contract acute HBV infection. We report a case of a 30-year-old man with HIV who transitioned from antiretroviral therapy to CAB/RPV and had confirmed HBV immunity. The patient, though asymptomatic, showed significantly elevated liver function tests (LFTs) before his monthly CAB/RPV injection. He was hospitalized and diagnosed with acute HBV infection. His LFTs improved, and he was taken off CAB/RPV and …
