The Causes And Impact Of Evictions In Southern Nevada, Mohit Pande

Student Research

As the Southern Nevada region continues to quickly grow, evictions have become a structural feature of the region’s rental market. The region has one of the highest eviction filing rates in the country and this trend has continued to increase in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. This paper examines the availability of market-rate affordable housing and the expansion of subsidized affordable housing to understand how the local housing conditions contribute to the number of evictions in Southern Nevada. Additionally, the paper studies local legal processes, such as the summary eviction system and habitability procedures, to understand the relationship between …

Where’D You Go, Ohio: Progressive Ohio Ballot Initiative Passage In A Republican Aligned State, Colin D. Swearingen, Elizabeth A. Stiles, Barrett Scheatzle*

2025 Faculty Bibliography

Over the span of just three months, Ohio voters went to the polls to weigh in on three issues concerning the threshold needed to amend the state constitution, abortion, and marijuana. Despite being a Republican-leaning state – per an author’s calculations, its Cook’s Partisan Voter Index is R+6 – the more progressive position won all three votes handily. In August, the coalition supporting the status quo of requiring a simple majority to change the state constitution, a longheld progressive position, won 57.1% of the vote (“The New York Times,” 2023a). In November, voters approved a constitutional amendment to give individuals …

Background: Ovarian cancer is a leading cause of gynecologic cancer mortality, with Black women experiencing 5-year survival rates of only 41%. Disproportionate air pollution exposure may impact survival. We evaluated associations of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) exposure with survival among Black women with epithelial ovarian cancer using data from the California Cancer Registry (CCR, n = 540) and the multi-state African American Cancer Epidemiology Study (AACES, n = 766).

Methods: Annual PM2.5 and NO2 levels were estimated at a 1 km resolution using well-validated ensemble-based prediction models derived from the …

Spleen And Peripheral Blood Immunopathology In An Outbred Model Of Adult-Stage Murine Schistosomiasis, Thomas Schulze, Andrew J. Neville, Evie G. Ehrhorn, Sarah A. Alsuleiman, Jonathan L. Vennerstrom, Paul H. Davis

Journal Articles: Pharmaceutical Sciences

Schistosomiasis, a parasitic disease caused by flatworms of genus Schistosoma, is a neglected tropical disease that causes significant morbidity in the developing world. Despite numerous efforts to eradicate the disease, the parasite remains a significant global burden, particularly within Sub-Saharan Africa. Schistosoma species possess an arsenal of potent mechanisms to defend against direct attack from host immune cells and a remarkable ability to modulate the host immune system through proximal and systemic modes that facilitate its stage-specific development, survival, and reproduction. Standardized animal models have been developed that serve as an important resource for dissecting parasite and host immunobiology …

Structured Exercise Program And Effects On Depressed Mood And Anxiety, Angel M. Hernandez Jan 2025

Structured Exercise Program And Effects On Depressed Mood And Anxiety, Angel M. Hernandez

Cohort XIII

Exercise has been shown to significantly improve symptoms of depressed mood and anxiety by enhancing levels of key neurotransmitters such as serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine, which are essential for mood and stress regulation. Regular physical activity promotes better sleep, boosts self-esteem, and fosters a sense of accomplishment, supporting emotional well-being. In contrast, lack of exercise may worsen symptoms due to reduced neurotransmitter activity and a diminished ability to cope with stress. This project focused on individuals in a psychosocial rehabilitation (PSR) program who reported symptoms of depressed mood and anxiety. Participants engaged three times a week in a structured exercise …

Screening Beyond The Surface: Enhancing Dissociative Disorders Diagnosis With Des-Ii, Jocelyn Medina Jan 2025

Screening Beyond The Surface: Enhancing Dissociative Disorders Diagnosis With Des-Ii, Jocelyn Medina

Cohort XIII

Introduction/Background: Dissociative disorders are often unrecognized in outpatient mental health settings, resulting in inaccurate diagnoses, ineffective treatment, and prolonged patient distress. There is variability with the current assessment method of clinical interviewing in symptom presentation that can be mistaken for other psychiatric disorders. Clinicians usually use subjective assessment questions, increasing the risk of missing dissociative symptoms. Implementing a standardized screening tool, such as the Dissociative Experiences Scale-II (DES-II), may improve diagnostic accuracy.

Problem: Dissociative disorders are frequently unrecognized in outpatient mental health settings, leading to misdiagnosis and ineffective treatment plans (Steardo et al., 2021). The absence of standardized screening contributes …

Walk The Line: I Keep A Close Watch On These Feet Of Mine Qi Project To Increase The Frequency Of Diabetic Foot Exams, Jossue Herrera

Cohort XIII

The prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus Type II (DMII) is a significant global health concern, affecting approximately 451 million individuals worldwide, with projections indicating an increase to 693 million by 2045. As the eighth leading cause of global disease burden, DMII is associated with serious complications, including diabetes-related foot disease (DFD), which is the leading cause of disability among diabetic patients. An 8-day clinical practice log conducted at a primary care clinic in the Southwest United States revealed that a significant number of diabetic patients had not undergone a diabetic foot exam in the past year.

Objective: This quality improvement (QI) …

1st Place Research Paper: Increasing The Accessibility Of Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (Tf-Cbt) For Adolescents With Developmental Language Disorder: A Pilot Study, Lauren A. Fillet Jan 2025

1st Place Research Paper: Increasing The Accessibility Of Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (Tf-Cbt) For Adolescents With Developmental Language Disorder: A Pilot Study, Lauren A. Fillet

Eric M. Scandrett Graduate Library Research Prize

Research has demonstrated that adolescents with developmental language disorder (AWDLD) perform more poorly compared to typically developing peers on measures of narrative production. This limitation may not only impact education and social life, but also possibly post-traumatic stress recovery, as Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) involves a Trauma Narrative production activity (D’Amico et al., 2022). A limited amount of research has been conducted on adapting TF-CBT for children with intellectual disability, developmental disabilities, and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) (D’Amico et al., 2022; Anderson & Cook, 2015). However, there is currently no available research explicitly addressing how TF-CBT can be individualized to …

Investigating The State Of Graduate Education In The Philippines: Challenges, Opportunities, And Policy Implications, Anne K. Candelaria, Eric Arthur N. Dio, Jovelyn G. Delosa

Political Science Department Faculty Publications

This study provides a comprehensive assessment of the graduate education sector, revealing that it is highly privatized, NCR-centric, and dominated by enrollment in Education and Business/Administration fields. The analysis confirms that the primary driver for this high demand, particularly in teacher education (which accounts for over half of all enrollment), is the use of graduate degrees as a key requirement for career advancement and promotion within agencies like the Department of Education (DepEd). This policy-driven demand, however, is linked to systemic issues, including the proliferation of “diploma mills” that undermine quality, extremely low on-time completion rates (averaging 18.77% for Master’s …

The Library Instructor As Learner: A Survey Of Reflective Teaching Practices In Us Academic Libraries, Alicia G. Vaandering, Amanda Crego-Emley

Public Services Faculty Publications

Reflective practice provides library workers with a critical opportunity to examine professional experiences, question assumptions and approaches, explore new perspectives, and develop innovative solutions to existing problems. When applied to instruction as reflective teaching, this practice better situates library instructors to meet the evolving needs of twenty-first-century library users. This research study explores how library workers engage with reflective teaching in academic libraries across the United States. A survey was distributed to academic library communities, and a total of 153 responses were collected. While 92% of respondents reported participating in reflective teaching practice in a variety of instructional contexts, results …

The Inconvenience Doctrine, Alexi Pfeffer-Gillett Jan 2025

The Inconvenience Doctrine, Alexi Pfeffer-Gillett

Scholarly Articles

In a nation of stark inequalities, the Roberts Court is often portrayed as siding with the wealthy and powerful. Many scholars argue that the Court has abandoned legal principles altogether and instead simply chooses winners and losers based on the conservative majority’s political agenda. Meanwhile, scholarly examinations of the legal reasoning underlying the Court’s most impactful decisions are largely confined to specific subject areas. Such compartmentalized analyses, though, overlook broader patterns in the Court’s rulings that transcend substantive legal boundaries.

This Article bridges the gap in these parallel conversations by connecting the Roberts Court’s reasoning across many legal fields with …

From Classrooms To Communities: Integrating The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Into Honors Education, Megan Mcilreavy, Pamela L. Martin Jan 2025

From Classrooms To Communities: Integrating The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Into Honors Education, Megan Mcilreavy, Pamela L. Martin

National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs: Chapters

Embracing the United National Education for Sustainable Development (SDG) framework empowers students to reflect on their actions and understand current and future social, cultural, economic, and environmental issues from local and global perspectives. Inherent in the concept of lifelong learning, these values should resonate with our next generation of students (Gen Z) who, studies show, are making career choices that contribute to making real changes on our planet. Leveraging different institutional strengths, honors programs and colleges can tailor their education within the framework that SDG provides to accommodate various needs that will benefit the institution itself.

Keeping Company: Genuine Conversation As A First-Year Honors Seminar Pedagogy, Richard Badenhausen

National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs: Chapters

Despite the challenges of a conversational approach to the FYS, the pedagogy has become engrained enough in the gateway seminar to the Westminster University Honors College that it would be hard to imagine adopting another strategy. Faculty tend to improve over time at leading such classrooms and regularly focus on the conversation-based features of their classes in their end-of-term self-reflections, as two teaching partners did in the following comments about the honors core course Global Welfare and Justice: “The strength of the class was the group dynamic and constellation of voices. It was an incredibly engaged class. Students challenged and …

Reflection In First-Year Honors Courses: Why We Can’T Take It For Granted, Kevin W. Dean, Zachary Wooten

National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs: Chapters

Existing scholarship suggests that intentional reflection, during or shortly following an event, can impact future vocational choices and generate memories that participants can recall years after the undergraduate experience. Inspiring accounts of reflection, decades following honors City as Text experiences, demonstrate the influence that reflective experiences played in vocational formation (Daniel; Schock). Given the community focus of an honors FYS, studying the long-term impact of that experience on alums would be interesting.
