Risk Factors For Peripheral Artery Disease-Related Amputations Among Black Americans, Darnell L. Blake
Risk Factors For Peripheral Artery Disease-Related Amputations Among Black Americans, Darnell L. Blake
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Evidence suggests that Black Americans (BAs) are at a significantly higher risk of peripheral artery disease (PAD)-related amputations. This study aimed to examine risk factors for non-traumatic lower extremity amputation (NTLEA) among BAs with PAD addressing a significant knowledge gap regarding racial disparities in PAD outcomes. Grounded in Bandura's social cognitive theory, which posits the interplay among personal factors, environmental influences, and behavior, this study examines how age, gender, income, and comorbidities like cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, and diabetes influence NTLEA across various insurance types (private, Medicaid, Medicare, self-pay). This quantitative cross-sectional study used the 2020 National Inpatient Sample, 1% …

Executive Summary: Staff Education Project Prescription-Based Virtual Reality Solution For Chronic Pain Management, Adesina Adegoke
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The gap in practice addressed in this educational project was that the staff at the project site in central Massachusetts did not have adequate knowledge of how virtual reality (VR) technology can be a treatment alternative to pain medication. According to a survey in 2010, approximately 24% of the adult population of Massachusetts had chronic pain and may often depend on opioids for pain management. The problem question was: Does educating the mental health staff on VR technology as a viable alternative to opioid medication improve knowledge as evidenced from pre- to postsurvey? With this evidence-based educational project, I aimed …
Effective Business Promotion Strategies Small Business Owners Use To Improve Revenue And Increase Business Viability, Shirley Owusu-Ankomah
Effective Business Promotion Strategies Small Business Owners Use To Improve Revenue And Increase Business Viability, Shirley Owusu-Ankomah
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Small businesses are vital to national and local economies, yet many struggle to sustain operations in the long term. A significant concern for small business owners is the lack of effective promotion strategies, a key factor in business failure. Grounded in open system theory, the purpose of this multiple case study was to investigate the promotion strategies employed by small business owners to improve revenue and increase business viability. The participants were six small business owners from Sekondi-Takoradi in Ghana’s Western Region, who successfully utilized strategies to improve revenue and maintain their businesses. Data sources included semistructured interview data and …
Public Patent Powers, Laura E. Dolbow
Public Patent Powers, Laura E. Dolbow
Michigan Law Review
Congress has created multiple structures for agencies to control how patents are used, but that institutional design choice has received little academic attention. This Article provides the first comprehensive survey of existing laws that expressly authorize agencies to control patents. I locate 113 express conditions across 68 laws that expressly authorize executive actors to make some form of decision about patents. These powers, which I refer to as “public patent powers,” allow the government to use patented inventions, to obtain patents, to authorize third parties to use patented inventions, and to regulate how patents are used. Agencies have used many …
Retrenchment By Diversion: The New Politics Of Parental Rights, Mary Ziegler, Maxine Eichner, Naomi Cahn
Retrenchment By Diversion: The New Politics Of Parental Rights, Mary Ziegler, Maxine Eichner, Naomi Cahn
Michigan Law Review
For the past century, the Supreme Court has repeatedly affirmed the importance of parents’ rights to direct their children’s upbringing and education. Yet suddenly the rhetoric of parental rights is being used to ground a broad range of claims on issues such as what can be taught in public schools, when minors can access gender-affirming care, or who will be punished for helping minors travel for abortion care. Why have parental-rights claims surged so visibly in contemporary law and politics? And are all the new arguments made under the banner of parental rights equally rooted in constitutional precedent?

Integrating The Workforce: A Proposed Expansion Of The Lane V. Kitzhaber Rule, Dean Farmer
Integrating The Workforce: A Proposed Expansion Of The Lane V. Kitzhaber Rule, Dean Farmer
Michigan Law Review
Sheltered workshops are workplaces that employ, and may legally pay subminimum wages to, individuals with disabilities. Though these workshops have historically been a large part of disability employment services in the United States, many policymakers have advocated for a shift from sheltered workshops to integrated disability employment services, in which individuals with disabilities work alongside other workers for an equal wage that meets or exceeds the minimum wage. In Lane v. Kitzhaber, the U.S. District Court for the District of Oregon applied Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to sheltered workshop programs, holding that states must …
The End(S) Of Bankruptcy Exceptionalism: Purdue Pharma And The Problem Of Social Debt, Jonathan C. Lipson, Pamela Foohey
The End(S) Of Bankruptcy Exceptionalism: Purdue Pharma And The Problem Of Social Debt, Jonathan C. Lipson, Pamela Foohey
Cardozo Law Review
The Supreme Court’s recent 5-4 decision in the controversial chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization of opioid-maker Purdue Pharma ends the use of nonconsensual third-party “releases,” which discharge (eliminate) liabilities of nondebtors who may share liability with a corporate debtor. Although the majority opinion is correct that the Bankruptcy Code does not permit this, it failed to recognize the problematic exceptionalism of the lower courts which approved those releases or the “social” qualities of Purdue Pharma’s mass tort liability.
Bankruptcy exceptionalism has been a contested concept since it emerged over fifteen years ago and reflects a willingness to bend the rule of …

This research examines what Korean young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) perceive as important parts of their lives, and the impact Korean culture has on their adulthood. The researcher interviewed nineteen participants with IDD in South Korea, ranging in age from nineteen to thirty-four years. A semi-structured qualitative interview was conducted to collect data. An inductive thematic data analysis identified three key themes: family-oriented lives with “constraints,” conformity to behavioral norms, and living for others. This article discusses how Korean culture impacts the emerging adulthood of young adults with IDD.

Wf-Ppg: A Wrist-Finger Dual-Channel Dataset For Studying The Impact Of Contact Pressure On Ppg Morphology, Matthew Yiwen Ho, Hung Manh Pham, Aaqib Saeed, Dong Ma
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Photoplethysmography (PPG) is a simple optical technique widely used in wearable devices for continuous cardiac health monitoring. However, the quality of PPG signals, particularly their morphology, is influenced by the contact pressure between the skin and the sensor. This variability in signal quality complicates complex tasks that rely on high-quality signals, such as blood pressure and heart rate variability estimation, making them less reliable or even impossible. To address this issue, we present a novel dataset (termed WF-PPG) comprising PPG signals from the wrist measured under varying contact pressures, along with high-quality PPG signals from the fingertip captured simultaneously. Data …

A series of fluorinated and non-fluorinated [6]-gingerol, [6]-paradol, [6]-shogaol and ferulate derivatives were synthesized. Testing these analogs in anti-proliferation assays with MCF-7, A549, HCT-116 and HEK-293 cell lines provided insight into the structural features that contribute to the anti-proliferative activity of naturally occurring ginger constituents. In particular, the use of both vinyl and alkyl trifluoromethyl isosteres allowed us to evaluate the structure-activity impact of the enone motif found in shogaols. Our results indicate that enone-containing derivatives have a higher potency, suggesting the conjugated enone motif characteristic of shogaols may be primarily responsible for the anti-cancer activity of the broader natural …

Menopause, a significant life transition for half the global population, intersects biological, cultural and social dimensions. Despite its universal occurrence, menopause research has historically been dominated by biomedical perspectives, often neglecting women's voices and diverse experiences. This article highlights the importance of including women's perspectives in menopause research to ensure relevance, accuracy and equity. It explores cultural variations in menopause experiences, the impact of socioeconomic status and the often-overlooked emotional and psychological dimensions. This article advocates for participatory approaches, emphasising that women's involvement enhances research design, implementation and policy development. Evidence-based interventions that are tailored to the individual can better …

Customary Corruption, Ani B. Satz, Liza Vertinsky
Customary Corruption, Ani B. Satz, Liza Vertinsky
William & Mary Law Review
For over a hundred years, it has been well-accepted among tort scholars that physicians—as one of the legally recognized professions— determine their own customary practices. Within tort law, and medical malpractice more specifically, customary practice establishes whether physicians breach or uphold the required standard of care toward their patients. The results of our hand-coded examination of decided cases and statutes show a more complex picture. While some states have endeavored to shift the standard away from professional custom, it continues to play a critical, and in many cases a determinative, role in establishing physician liability in most states.

Lighten The Load: Why The Government Should Bear The Burden Of Proving The Validity Of An Alien's Appellate Waiver During A Removal Order Collateral Attack, Jimmy Garner
William & Mary Law Review
While there is much to say about the current state of the U.S. immigration system, this Note focuses on what happens to many aliens when they are subsequently criminally charged with the felony of illegally reentering the United States. When an alien was previously subject to deportation and later indicted on criminal charges of illegal reentry, a provision in 8 U.S.C. § 1326 allows the alien to collaterally attack the underlying removal order if it was fundamentally unfair. In light of the current political conversations surrounding the U.S. immigration system, this Note advocates for ensuring that asylum and removal hearings …

This data brief presents a retrospective analysis of available medical claims data from New Hampshire’s commercial, Medicaid, and Medicare insurance programs. This brief focuses on the conditions that incur the highest medical costs, regardless of their prevalence among the population. Metabolic disorders, hemophilia, certain cancers, and transplants were identified across all three payers as some of the costliest conditions. Most of these conditions have low prevalence and could, in some instances, be considered rare. There is variability in the prevalence of these conditions by payer type and there is a variability in the costs paid by payer type, with commercial …

Guideline-recommended screening programs exist for only a few single-cancer types, and these cancers represent less than one-half of all new cancer cases diagnosed each year in the U.S. In addition, these "single-cancer" standard of care (SoC) screening tests vary in accuracy, adherence, and effectiveness, though all are generally understood to lead to reductions in cancer-related mortality. Recent advances in high-throughput technologies and machine learning have facilitated the development of blood-based multi-cancer early detection (MCED) tests. The opportunity for early detection of multiple cancers with a single blood test holds promise in addressing the current unmet need in cancer screening. By …

Anti-retroviral therapy (ART) has decreased human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-1-associated morbidity. However, despite ART, immune cells remain latently infected, leading to chronic inflammation and HIV-1-associated comorbidities. New strategies are needed to target viral proteins and inflammation. We found activation of Notch3 in renal cells of the HIV-1 transgenic mouse model (HIV-Tg26) and in patients with HIV-associated nephropathy. We hypothesized that targeting NOTCH3 activation constitutes an effective therapy for HIV-related chronic kidney disease. We generated HIV-Tg26 mice with Notch3 knocked out (Tg-N3KO). Compared to HIV-Tg26 mice at 3 months, Tg-N3KO mice showed a marked reduction in renal injury, skin lesions and mortality …

Patients diagnosed with metastatic basal cell carcinoma (BCC) have a poor prognosis. The current standard of care for adults with locally advanced or metastatic BCC who are not candidates for surgery or radiation therapy is treatment with hedgehog pathway inhibitors (HHIs). For patients who progress while on this therapy, further treatment options are limited. There is also a need for real-world clinical practice data on the clinical characteristics, management, disease progression, and survivorship of these patients. The ongoing CemiplimAb-rwlc Survivorship and Epidemiology (CASE) study is a phase IV, multicenter, prospective, noninterventional survivorship and epidemiology cohort study evaluating the effectiveness and …
