Changes In Rectus Femoris Strength And Size With Daily Single Leg Bfr Vs Daily Non-Bfr Training In Recreationally Active Individuals, Terrell Kopping, Dj Wilson, Kenzie Ward, Kaileigh Dietrich-Denton,, Bethany Nguyen, Jason Brumitt
Student-Faculty Research - College of Physical Therapy
Blood flow restriction (BFR) utilizes a controlled form of arterial and venous occlusion during resistance exercise.
Resistance training closer to an individual’s one repetition maximum (1RM) (e.g., 70% or higher) has been found to elicit increases in muscle strength and size.1-5
BFR training at lower loads (e.g., 20-30% 1RM) can lead to increases in muscle hypertrophy and strength without the muscle damage associated with training at heavier loads.

CDC reports that falls in the US cost $50 billion per year. Previous research has indicated that light touch is a strategy that humans rely on to maintain upright (Baldan, et al). Assistive devices are often used for increased proprioception, but requires use of both or one upper extremity. The use of a wearable haptic sway vest allows for participation in bimanual tasks while decreasing risk of falls. This is crucial for the older population to maintain functional independence.

The purpose of this study is to determine the influences of peak effort in participants with knee pain and/or knee osteoarthritis during a 1 minute sit to stand test, and new approaches in knee pain education. Many individuals with knee osteoarthritis (OA) may assume that engaging in physical activity could exacerbate their condition. As a result, they may refrain from participating in activities they enjoy due to concerns about worsening symptoms or the progression of OA in their knee. It has been shown in research that if we as clinicians, and other healthcare professionals shift the impairment based talk, individuals …

In 2022, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued the Intersectoral Global Action Plan for Epilepsy and Other Neurological Disorders for 2022 to 2031, emphasizing important connections between brain health, population well-being, and economic growth. A year later, the WHO followed up with strategic guidelines aimed at enhancing brain health outcomes in developing countries. However, critical gaps remain. Our policy forum paper advocates for policies that target brain health across all stages of life, starting with measures to reduce the consumption of alcohol, sugar, and tobacco. Additionally, we propose the integration of school meal programs and social pension schemes as essential …

Kimmel Cancer Center Faculty Papers
Long-term exposure to hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] has been linked to lung cancer, and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) is a well-known inflammatory factor. However, the role and mechanism of COX-2 in Cr(VI)-induced carcinogenesis are not clear yet. To address this question, we employed a mouse model exposed to Cr(VI) through intranasal instillation of particulate zinc chromate (ZnCrO4) for 12 weeks. Metabolomics and RNA-seq assays revealed enhanced activity of the arachidonic acid (AA)/eicosanoid metabolism pathway in lung tissues from mice exposed to Cr(VI). COX-2, the key enzyme of the AA/eicosanoid pathway, was significantly upre- gulated in Cr(VI)-exposed lung tissues, as well as in the …

The COVID-19 pandemic changed the counseling programs in clinical instruction, mentorship, and student’s perception of the university. The qualitative data presented in this paper identifies eight counseling students’ beliefs of support during their time in counseling program during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data was obtained through semi-structured interviews. An interpretive phenomenological analysis resulted in four themes: including higher education response, personal resources, emotions in crisis, and transitions in crisis.
From Cptpp To Us–Taiwan Initiative On 21st-Century Trade: The Evolution Of Good Regulatory Practices And Its Implications For Taiwan, Han-Wei Liu
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
This paper examines the evolution and implications of Good Regulatory Practices (GRP) – otherwise known as ‘regulatory coherence’ in international trade agreements, focusing on the US-Taiwan Initiative on twenty-first-Century Trade. By comparing GRP frameworks in the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement (USMCA), and the US–Taiwan Initiative, the paper highlights the challenges of integrating GRP into Taiwan’s legal system. The analysis reveals significant disparities between GRP requirements and Taiwan’s existing Administrative Procedure Act (APA) in key areas such as public consultation, regulatory impact assessments (RIAs), and sunset review mechanisms. The paper also explores potential …

Predicting Post-Wildfire Stream Temperature And Turbidity: A Machine Learning Approach In Western Us Watersheds, Junjie Chen, Heejun Chang
Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations
Wildfires significantly impact water quality in the Western United States, posing challenges for water resource management. However, limited research quantifies post-wildfire stream temperature and turbidity changes across diverse climatic zones. This study addresses this gap by using Random Forest (RF) and Support Vector Regression (SVR) models to predict post-wildfire stream temperature and turbidity based on climate, streamflow, and fire data from the Clackamas and Russian River Watersheds. We selected Random Forest (RF) and Support Vector Regression (SVR) because they handle non-linear, high-dimensional data, balance accuracy with efficiency, and capture complex post-wildfire stream temperature and turbidity dynamics with minimal assumptions. The …

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Unsignalized pedestrian crossing accommodations can improve pedestrian safety, yet their quality of service for pedestrians remains understudied. The present study explored whether and how pedestrians’ satisfaction with crossing unsignalized crossings varied according to the type of crossing accommodation used, that is, the rectangular rapid-flashing beacon (RRFB) with median island, median island alone, marked crosswalk, and unmarked crosswalk. The research team collected intercept survey and video observation data from 358 pedestrians across a total of 40 sites in two different cities. Structural equation models illustrated how pedestrians’ crossing-oriented satisfaction was shaped by their positive perceptions of safety and low levels of …

Open Touro Created
2025
Constitutional Freedoms is an undergraduate text for courses in civil rights and liberties. It covers most of the subject areas of other undergraduate texts, although it rearranges some in ways that are more conducive to student learning. The major difference is that freedoms of speech and press are treated together as aspects of communication, rather than separately because so distinguished in the US Constitution. The book includes sections on Supreme Court procedure, methods of interpretation, and tests for unconstitutionality, as well as information about experiential learning opportunities for students.

Extended Reality For Alternative Dispute Resolution, Ryan Gallagher
Journal of Dispute Resolution
“What is real? How do you define ‘real’? If you’re talking about what you can feel, what you can smell, what you can taste and see, then ‘real’ is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain.” As technology continues to advance, its effects will be felt in all aspects of our lives, and the world of Alternative Dispute Resolution (“ADR”) will be no different. Dispute resolution processes must adapt to the needs of their users. These users are increasingly in different parts of the world as the global economy expands. Inevitably, globalization leads to more conflicts that require resolution. Technology …

Department of Pharmacology, Physiology, and Cancer Biology Faculty Papers
Ondansetron is an anti-emetic 5-HT3 receptor antagonist being investigated for treating neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS). Sparse PK data were analyzed from a multicenter, double-blind clinical trial with 98 mother/neonate dyads. Pregnant women with opioid use disorder were randomized to receive either placebo or ondansetron 8 mg intravenously within 4 h of delivery. Neonates born to mothers who were randomized to ondansetron received 0.07 mg/kg orally once every 24 h for up to five doses. Using current PK data, model parameters from a two-compartmental structural model from the literature (i.e., a priori model) were updated with the Metropolis-Hastings Markov-chain Monte …

Acute Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Secondary To Handcuffs Necessitating Emergency Orthopedic Consultation And Operative Intervention, Fabian Jano, Kelly Mackenzie, Vivek Biololikar, David Goldberger, Andrei Tuluca
Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Papers
We present a case of acute carpal tunnel syndrome secondary to tight handcuffs in a detained patient. The severity of the motor and sensory deficits prompted consultation with orthopedic specialists and admission for an observation period with ultimate emergency operative intervention. Handcuff neuropathies are well documented in the literature, mainly involving the superficial branch of the radial nerve, which has strict sensory input into the dorsum of the hand. Less common median nerve neuropathies have also been documented following handcuff injury; however, none have required emergency intervention. We aim to highlight this unusual presentation and the emergency nature of the …

Sport officials (referees, judges, umpires) have been historically underrepresented in the sport management, psychology, and physiology literature, but this collection of experts provides avenues for collaboration and exploration that can contribute to understanding systems, individuals, and initiate real-world changes for sporting organisations, policy makers, and officials themselves. Focused and organised around the key research areas and priorities of physiology, decision making, psychology, mental health, management, and training and development, this statement offers detail on the development of the research and associated literature and …
Risk Factors For Peripheral Artery Disease-Related Amputations Among Black Americans, Darnell L. Blake
Risk Factors For Peripheral Artery Disease-Related Amputations Among Black Americans, Darnell L. Blake
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Evidence suggests that Black Americans (BAs) are at a significantly higher risk of peripheral artery disease (PAD)-related amputations. This study aimed to examine risk factors for non-traumatic lower extremity amputation (NTLEA) among BAs with PAD addressing a significant knowledge gap regarding racial disparities in PAD outcomes. Grounded in Bandura's social cognitive theory, which posits the interplay among personal factors, environmental influences, and behavior, this study examines how age, gender, income, and comorbidities like cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, and diabetes influence NTLEA across various insurance types (private, Medicaid, Medicare, self-pay). This quantitative cross-sectional study used the 2020 National Inpatient Sample, 1% …

Executive Summary: Staff Education Project Prescription-Based Virtual Reality Solution For Chronic Pain Management, Adesina Adegoke
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The gap in practice addressed in this educational project was that the staff at the project site in central Massachusetts did not have adequate knowledge of how virtual reality (VR) technology can be a treatment alternative to pain medication. According to a survey in 2010, approximately 24% of the adult population of Massachusetts had chronic pain and may often depend on opioids for pain management. The problem question was: Does educating the mental health staff on VR technology as a viable alternative to opioid medication improve knowledge as evidenced from pre- to postsurvey? With this evidence-based educational project, I aimed …

Public Patent Powers, Laura E. Dolbow
Public Patent Powers, Laura E. Dolbow
Michigan Law Review
Congress has created multiple structures for agencies to control how patents are used, but that institutional design choice has received little academic attention. This Article provides the first comprehensive survey of existing laws that expressly authorize agencies to control patents. I locate 113 express conditions across 68 laws that expressly authorize executive actors to make some form of decision about patents. These powers, which I refer to as “public patent powers,” allow the government to use patented inventions, to obtain patents, to authorize third parties to use patented inventions, and to regulate how patents are used. Agencies have used many …

Retrenchment By Diversion: The New Politics Of Parental Rights, Mary Ziegler, Maxine Eichner, Naomi Cahn
Michigan Law Review
For the past century, the Supreme Court has repeatedly affirmed the importance of parents’ rights to direct their children’s upbringing and education. Yet suddenly the rhetoric of parental rights is being used to ground a broad range of claims on issues such as what can be taught in public schools, when minors can access gender-affirming care, or who will be punished for helping minors travel for abortion care. Why have parental-rights claims surged so visibly in contemporary law and politics? And are all the new arguments made under the banner of parental rights equally rooted in constitutional precedent?

Integrating The Workforce: A Proposed Expansion Of The Lane V. Kitzhaber Rule, Dean Farmer
Michigan Law Review
Sheltered workshops are workplaces that employ, and may legally pay subminimum wages to, individuals with disabilities. Though these workshops have historically been a large part of disability employment services in the United States, many policymakers have advocated for a shift from sheltered workshops to integrated disability employment services, in which individuals with disabilities work alongside other workers for an equal wage that meets or exceeds the minimum wage. In Lane v. Kitzhaber, the U.S. District Court for the District of Oregon applied Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to sheltered workshop programs, holding that states must …

The End(S) Of Bankruptcy Exceptionalism: Purdue Pharma And The Problem Of Social Debt, Jonathan C. Lipson, Pamela Foohey
Cardozo Law Review
The Supreme Court’s recent 5-4 decision in the controversial chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization of opioid-maker Purdue Pharma ends the use of nonconsensual third-party “releases,” which discharge (eliminate) liabilities of nondebtors who may share liability with a corporate debtor. Although the majority opinion is correct that the Bankruptcy Code does not permit this, it failed to recognize the problematic exceptionalism of the lower courts which approved those releases or the “social” qualities of Purdue Pharma’s mass tort liability.
Bankruptcy exceptionalism has been a contested concept since it emerged over fifteen years ago and reflects a willingness to bend the rule of …
