An-Archy And Justice: An Introduction To Emmanuel Levinas's Political Thought., William Paul Simmons Jan 1996

An-Archy And Justice: An Introduction To Emmanuel Levinas's Political Thought., William Paul Simmons

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Emmanuel Levinas's political thought is best understood as a tension between an-archy and justice. Levinas claims that the aim of philosophy has most often been a search for an arche, or a neuter term that accounts for all of reality. Levinas argues that the reduction of reality to an arche obliterates all transcendence and subordinates man to a totality. Against the predominance of totality in the Western tradition, Levinas proposes a philosophy of transcendence. This transcendence is not found in the direct relationship with God, but in the face of the other person, the Other. Since the face of the …

Set Redundancy, The Enhanced Compression Model, And Methods For Compressing Sets Of Similar Images., Kosmas Karadimitriou Jan 1996

Set Redundancy, The Enhanced Compression Model, And Methods For Compressing Sets Of Similar Images., Kosmas Karadimitriou

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Image compression is the process of reducing the number of bits required to represent an image. This can be achieved by reducing (or ideally, eliminating) various types of redundancy that exist in the imaging data. All current image compression methods are based on the same theoretical model, which targets redundancy found in individual images. However, this model ignores an additional type of redundancy that exists in sets of similar images, the "set redundancy". The source of set redundancy is the common information existing in more than one image in a set of similar images. Set redundancy can be recognized by …

The Gospel According To Augustine: Augustine's Use Of The Gospels In The Confessions, Nikki Goodrick Jan 1996

The Gospel According To Augustine: Augustine's Use Of The Gospels In The Confessions, Nikki Goodrick

Anthós Journal (1990-1996)

St. Augustine makes use of many predecessors and precursors throughout his work, the Confessions. Among the most prominent of these predecessors are the writings of the early Christian church, in particular the Gospels. Augustine makes extensive use of the Gospels throughout his work but it is quite obvious that he does not view them to be a homogenous group but four distinctly different books. Augustine approaches each book in a markedly different manner and uses them for distinctly different purposes in the Confessions. He pays special attention to the Gospel of John and from this book he derives the most …

Eugène Boré And The Bulgarian Catholic Movement, Stafford Poole C.M. Oct 1995

Eugène Boré And The Bulgarian Catholic Movement, Stafford Poole C.M.

Vincentian Studies

Bulgaria’s nineteenth-century nationalism had a cultural focus, rather than a political one. Seeking freedom, not from the Ottoman Empire but from the cultural domination of Greek Orthodoxy, Bulgarians tried to form an independent church through union with Rome. The Vincentian mission and college of Saint-Benoit in Constantinople was a center for this movement. Eugene Bore also played a key role in it. He thought France’s duty in the Middle East was to limit the expansion of Russian and Orthodoxy there. He believed that the reunion of the Bulgarian church with Rome would be a means of accomplishing this. It was …

A History Of The Concept Of Creativity In Western Nursing: A Cultural Feminist Perspective, Karen K. Fritz Dnsc, Ms, Ba, Rn May 1995

A History Of The Concept Of Creativity In Western Nursing: A Cultural Feminist Perspective, Karen K. Fritz Dnsc, Ms, Ba, Rn

Dissertations

Using historical methodology, this study examined the concept of creativity in Western nursing from a cultural feminist perspective. An exploration of the concept was accomplished by means of a review emanating from the English literature of Western nursing and its allied disciplines of education and psychology. Two distinct views of creativity were delineated--the classical and the contemporary. The classical understanding required the completion of a major product or attainment in order for creativity to be ascribed. In contrast, the contemporary view was that of a novel, unrestrained thought process. It required no creative work or attainment for its ascription. The …

The Anchor, Volume 108.22: April 26, 1995, Hope College

The Anchor: 1995

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Jesus As "Son Of God", Christoph Franz Dobrowolski Jan 1995

Jesus As "Son Of God", Christoph Franz Dobrowolski

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

For the purpose of this paper, the attempt will be made to see how some contemporary scholars have addressed how the New Testament writers came to describe and proclaim Jesus as "Son of God." The attempt will also be made to see through the New Testament writers' theological retrojections of this title, to question whether or not Jesus understood himself to be "Son of God" in the same terms. Furthermore, discrepancies between consciousness and knowledge will be discussed- as contemporary scholars have presented them- in terms of Jesus' probable understanding of his divine sonship.

The Transcendental Element In The Absent Presence., Maggie Burnaman Martin Jan 1995

The Transcendental Element In The Absent Presence., Maggie Burnaman Martin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

"The Transcendental Element in the Absent Presence" analyzes the absent presence, the rhetorical and literary states of being there in the mind of the perceiving individual, though not there physically. It seeks to answer: What does the term "absent presence" mean? Is there a difference between rhetorical and literary absent presences? If so, how is each manifest through the reading process? And, what sustains these absent presences? Evidenced through selected works of Plato, Aristotle, New Testament writers, Sidney, Shakespeare, and Dickinson, the study argues for the intellectually, spiritually, or aesthetically transcendent quality of the absent presence. Any encounter between reader, …

Counting On You: The Rhetoric Of The National Council Of Teachers Of Mathematics "Standards"., Michael R. Dreher Jan 1995

Counting On You: The Rhetoric Of The National Council Of Teachers Of Mathematics "Standards"., Michael R. Dreher

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study sought to initiate the process of identifying the rhetoric of mathematics as a distinct field of research, while acknowledging its basis in the rhetoric of science and other literatures. Accordingly, the study started by examining the external basis of the rhetoric of mathematics; in other words, how discourse affects the way in which the culture views mathematics. The primary text for this study was the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics' three-volume Standards for School Mathematics. This document, designed to reform mathematics education from kindergarten through twelfth grade, was shown not to be completely successful in its goal …
