The Hottest Areas In U.S. Cities Are Losing The Most Greenery, Yunjae Ock, Vivek Shandas

Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations

Due to the significantly increasing impacts of urban heat, cities are seeking to expand tree canopy, parks and other forms of greenery to reduce temperatures. Despite these efforts, few studies have examined the relationship between neighborhood-scale thermal conditions and changes in green spaces. The present study drew on high-resolution, near-surface air temperature measurements in 33 U.S. cities to answer two research questions: (1) to what extent did these cities’ greenery change from 2013 to 2022? and (2) did these study areas have an increase in greenery within neighborhoods exhibiting the hottest air temperatures? Results suggest that 72.7% of cities are …

Ancient Berber Manuscripts In Arabic Script: Defining The Ultimate Objectives, Ouahmi Ould-Braham

Faits de Langue et Société (FLS)

Berber manuscripts written in Arabic characters are a field of scholarly interest since fifty years only. Where most public collections had only a few Berber manuscripts at their disposal, private collectors managed to build up important collections. Thanks to the ground breaking work of several berberologists, berber manuscripts developed during the last decennia, with obvious retardation, into an important theme of study.

Leading Where You Live: A Qualitative Multi-Case Study Of Public High School Principals Who Reside In Their School Communities, Joseph Held

Doctorate in Education

Despite extensive scholarship on relational trust, social capital, place-based leadership, and culturally responsive practice, little is known about how a principal’s residency within the school community shapes leadership demands. This qualitative, multi-case study employed semi-structured interviews, reflexive memoing, and cross-case thematic analysis to examine how nine Minnesota high school principals who lived in the urban, suburban, and rural communities they served experienced leadership practice, equity work, and emotional labor. Findings revealed that residency functions as a consequential leadership condition that reorganizes how principals build trust, exercise judgment, engage families, navigate boundaries, and interpret equity-related tensions. Six themes illuminated residency as: …
