Bruen’S Enforcement Puzzle: Unearthing And Adjudicating The Historical Enforcement Record In Second Amendment Cases, Andrew Willinger
Bruen’S Enforcement Puzzle: Unearthing And Adjudicating The Historical Enforcement Record In Second Amendment Cases, Andrew Willinger
Notre Dame Law Review
The Supreme Court’s 2022 decision in New York State Rifle & Pistol Ass’n v. Bruen brings historical complexity to the fore by instituting a history-focused test for the Second Amendment that demands analogues from the Founding or Reconstruction eras to support modern gun regulations. The majority opinion in Bruen considers, in multiple places, how certain historical gun regulations may have been enforced. In each instance, the Court suggests that evidence of racially disparate enforcement of a historical law is relevant to whether that law is part of the American historical tradition and an appropriate analogue. Historical enforcement data appear to …

The Prevalence Of Depression In Women With Pregnancy-Related Pelvic Girdle Pain: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Bradley Halliday, Sarah Chatfield, Joanne Hosking, Jennifer Freeman
School of Health Professions
Background and Aims: Pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain (PPGP) is estimated to affect between 20% and 70% of pregnant women with 10% experiencing it for more than 3 months postpartum. Women may also experience depression during this period. Understanding the prevalence of depression in women with PPGP is important to inform clinical management. This systematic review aimed to examine the prevalence of depression in women with PPGP in the antepartum and postpartum periods. Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis. Seven databases were searched from inception until May 24, 2023, combining keywords relating to pelvic girdle pain (PGP), depression, and pregnancy. Two …
An Updated Secondary Education Program Strengthening Literacy Instructional Capacity Through Targeted Coursework And Teacher Residency, Kaleb Andrew Smith
An Updated Secondary Education Program Strengthening Literacy Instructional Capacity Through Targeted Coursework And Teacher Residency, Kaleb Andrew Smith
Theses and Dissertations
Assessment data continues to show middle and high school students struggling with literacy. As literacy is intricate to every course at the secondary level, students who struggle with reading and writing struggle across the curriculum. While this glaring issue persists, many teachers take few courses to train them to implement the instructional strategies needed to help students overcome deficits and succeed in the disciplinary coursework of secondary school. The goals of the project were to decide which content should be included in a required program of study for secondary education pre-service teachers to increase capacity and improve classroom readiness and …
Windows Into Changing Landscapes: Bioarchaeological And Geophysical Analysis Of The Grenada Yellow Fever Cemetery, M. Kathryn Mckenna
Windows Into Changing Landscapes: Bioarchaeological And Geophysical Analysis Of The Grenada Yellow Fever Cemetery, M. Kathryn Mckenna
Theses and Dissertations
This project focuses on the Yellow Fever Cemetery of Grenada, Mississippi through geophysical and biological methods. A ground penetrating radar survey was conducted to investigate the landscape and burial patterns in relation to the use of the cemetery throughout high periods of mortality such as a yellow fever epidemic. Additionally, biological methods were used in the analysis of an individual recovered as part of a salvage archaeology event from the cemetery. The multifaceted approach aims to uncover more about the cemetery, landscape, and community as it has changed over time with the influence of extreme events such as the yellow …

Creating A Chronology Of Claiborne (22ha501): Revisiting And Revising Radiocarbon Assays Of A Poverty Point Site, Olivia Catherine Baumgartel
Theses and Dissertations
The Claiborne site in Hancock County, Mississippi has been considered part of a culture within Poverty Point’s control since it’s discovery in the 1950’s. In this study, I sampled and ran new five new radiocarbon dates from the collections at Mississippi State University. I then created a chronometric hygiene scale, ranked the new and current dates, removed dates from models that did not have the criteria needed to continue. This thesis created a new chronology for the site, placing it within the timeline of Poverty Point but also related it to the Archaic shell mounds in Southeastern North America.
Gnotobiotic Mouse Models For Characterizing The Role Of The Microbiota On Undernutrition And Early Postnatal Brain Development, Alexandra Elizabeth Byrne
Gnotobiotic Mouse Models For Characterizing The Role Of The Microbiota On Undernutrition And Early Postnatal Brain Development, Alexandra Elizabeth Byrne
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Undernutrition is a serious global health challenge; it accounts for nearly half of all mortality for children under the age of 5. Worse, undernutrition is compounded by intergenerational inheritance and can be transmitted from mother to offspring. The burden of undernutrition is unequally distributed around the world, with South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa accounting for almost 60% of the global childhood stunting. Undernutrition is detrimental to many aspects of development, including long-term deficits in neurodevelopment, and current interventions rarely ameliorate long-term cognitive and motor deficits. Therefore, other causes of undernutrition need to be elucidated in order to treat this epidemic …

Sacrificing Our Children At The Altar Of Modern K-12 Public Education, Rena M. Lindevaldsen
Sacrificing Our Children At The Altar Of Modern K-12 Public Education, Rena M. Lindevaldsen
Liberty University Law Review
Should publicly-funded K-12 education continue to exist? At first blush, it might seem a radical question to even ask. But when public schools are failing in their essential purposes, we need to explore whether to cease funding them. From their inception, public schools had at least two essential purposes: to train students in those values essential to participating in society and, as the saying goes, teaching reading, writing, and arithmetic.
This Article will highlight the ways in which public schools are failing to achieve these two basic goals. First, public schools are failing academically. Scores on standardized tests continue to …

Integrated assessment models that incorporate biodiversity and ecosystem services could be an important tool for improving our understanding of interconnected social-economic-ecological systems, and for analyzing how policy alternatives can shift future trajectories towards more sustainable development. Despite recent scientific and technological advances, key gaps remain in the scientific community’s ability to deliver information to decision-makers at the pace and scale needed to address sustainability challenges. We identify five research frontiers for integrated social-economic-ecological modeling (primarily focused on terrestrial systems) to
incorporate biodiversity and ecosystem services: 1) downscaling impacts of direct and indirect drivers on eco- systems; 2) incorporating feedbacks in …

A New Record Of Coleoid Arm Hooks From The Lowermost Jurassic Of Lilstock, Somerset, Simon Penn, Malcolm B. Hart, Gregory D. Price
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
We report on a new assemblage of coleoid arm hooks found in the Blue Lias (Lower Jurassic) succession near Lilstock (Somerset, UK). As there are no soft tissues or other materials (ink sac, phragmocone, etc.) preserved in the vicinity of the hooks, the genus and species cannot be accurately identified. Unlike the hooks of Clarkeiteuthis, which have distinctive inflated, bilobate bases, the hooks discussed herein are delicate, with a gently curved apex, which makes them quite similar to the arm hooks of Belemnotheutis or Acanthoteuthis. The assemblage of hooks shows a distinct organisation and, in some places, the hooks are …

Application Of New Media In Peace Building And Conflict Resolution In Nigeria, Eric Msughter Aondover, Ademolu Patrick Okuneye, Timothy Ekeledirichukwu Onyejelem
Journal of African Conflicts and Peace Studies
The role of new media in conflict prevention, resolution and escalation is now a global concern to both peace and conflict scholars and public policy makers. The kind of information the media disseminate is critical to sustaining peace and harmony in society and vice versa. New media has a long history. The media have suffered deprivation in the hands of both military and civilian regimes. However, this has not in anywhere diminished the growth of the media in all its ramifications. Traditional media genre like newspaper, radio and television has received much recognition and seminal attention, but social or new …

Decomposing the responses of ecosystem structure and function in drylands to changes in human-environmental forcing is a pressing challenge. Though trend detection studies are extensive, these studies often fail to attribute them to potential spatiotemporal drivers. Most attribution studies use a single empirical model or a causal graph that cannot be generalized or extrapolated to larger scales or account for spatial changes and multiple independent processes. Here, we proposed and tested a multi-stage, multi-model framework that detects vegetation trends and attributes them to ten independent social-environmental system (SES) drivers in Kazakhstan (KZ). The time series segmented residual trend analysis showed …

Place And Placelessness: An Ecocritical Approach Towards The Mountain Imagery In Country Music, Siyuan Ma
Place And Placelessness: An Ecocritical Approach Towards The Mountain Imagery In Country Music, Siyuan Ma
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Drawing upon cultural geographer Yi-Fu Tuan’s frame of place and placelessness, this ecocritical project explores how the mountain landscapes serve to construct regional, national, cultural, spiritual, religious, even racialized identities in various human societies. Using the U.S. country music as a primary example, I argue that what country music fundamentally draws from the imagery of the Appalachian Mountains is not the Anglo-Saxon ballad music or pastoral lifestyle of/from the mountains, but the powerful sense of place and placelessness (arguably only) the mountainous scenes are capable to provoke. This exploration serves to illuminate the commonalties between humanities of different cultures and …

Rhetorical Tapestries Of Water Injustice: The Framing Of (In)Access And (In)Justice In The Struggle For Water Security In The United States, Carla R. Richards
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation argues that access to clean water is a fundamental human right and a cornerstone of environmental justice. It critiques existing communication and rhetorical scholarship for overlooking the environmental dimensions of water access and justice. This gap hinders progress toward equity for marginalized communities disproportionately burdened by water insecurity.
This project proposes a communication approach that prioritizes culturally relevant strategies to empower these communities in advocating for their environmental rights and health needs. By bridging the communication and environmental justice fields, this project equips communities with the tools to demand fair solutions. It ultimately calls for a transformative shift …
Buddhism, Daoism, And Jeet Kune Do: A Contemporary Analysis Of Nondual Traditions In A New Age Martial Art, James H. Sutton
Buddhism, Daoism, And Jeet Kune Do: A Contemporary Analysis Of Nondual Traditions In A New Age Martial Art, James H. Sutton
Journal of Conscious Evolution
Traditional martial arts are known for their focus on spiritual cultivation through a combination of self-defense training and contemplative practices like meditation. Traditional martial art systems tend to utilize nondual traditions commonly associated with Buddhism and Daoism; however, modern martial art practices, particularly those of MMA, no longer place a strong emphasis on such traditions. In turn, this has led to the development of high-performance sport athletes who emphasize self-defense efficiency in combat (usually combat sports) over all other attributes while also mixing “arts” or “styles” as necessary for the individual’s own self growth. I dub these as “new age” …
Chinese Tallow Long-Term Impact On Stand Dynamics In A Bottomland Hardwood Forest Following Vegetation Management, Nicklaus R. Langlois
Chinese Tallow Long-Term Impact On Stand Dynamics In A Bottomland Hardwood Forest Following Vegetation Management, Nicklaus R. Langlois
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Chinese tallow (Triadica sebifera (L.) Small) is an invasive tree known to have negative impacts on bottomland hardwood forests. Chinese tallow is proficient in reproducing and surviving in bottomland hardwood forests because it is more flood and shade tolerant than most native trees. The long-term effectiveness of Chinese tallow control is an important topic to research as only a few long-term studies of Chinese tallow control have been conducted. A 10-year re-measurement of 22 paired plots installed in 2012 on the Pineywoods Mitigation Bank near Diboll, Texas following herbicide treatments examined Chinese tallow and native tree stand structure. Each …
Unincorporated: A Case For American Samoa Through The Fog Of The Insular Cases, Riley J. Gutierrez
Unincorporated: A Case For American Samoa Through The Fog Of The Insular Cases, Riley J. Gutierrez
Liberty University Law Review
For over a century, American Samoa has been an unincorporated territory of the United States. Due to its “unincorporated” status, its inhabitants lack U.S. constitutional citizenship under the Fourteenth Amendment. Congress has further failed to pass legislation granting statutory birthright citizenship to American Samoans, setting American Samoa apart as the only U.S. territory without birthright citizenship.
American Samoan representatives have fought to keep American Samoa from being further incorporated under the Federal Constitution. Despite American Samoa being the largest per capita contributor to the United States military, its people value their way of life, or fa’a Samoa, too much …

“His” Gentleman’S Farm, Virginia Payne Dow
“His” Gentleman’S Farm, Virginia Payne Dow
Masters Theses
Based on our farming experiences in rural Maine, this memoir relates a personal narrative of gardening and animal husbandry. The idea and passion for this gentleman’s farm project was solely my husband Mark’s, but due to his expanding work schedule, the execution of it fell largely on my shoulders. The narrative follows our exploits on the farm, beginning with that first experimental year. Nearly forty years later, Mark decided to try again. However, like our original farming venture, the gentleman’s farm that was supposed to be completely Mark’s project has become another shared adventure. The memoir comes full circle, showing …

Assessing The Role Of Steam Explosivity In Shallow And Deep Marine Environments, Frederick Ede
Assessing The Role Of Steam Explosivity In Shallow And Deep Marine Environments, Frederick Ede
Master's Theses
Volcaniclastic deposits formed in shallow and deep marine environments show strikingly different characteristics resulting from the ability of steam to assist in lava fragmentation. Deep marine deposits come from recent lava flows at Axial Seamount, formed around 1,500 m water depth, while shallow marine samples come from Miocene Columbia River Basalt Group (CRBG) lava flows that were emplaced in a shallow marine to subaerial environment and are now exposed on the Oregon coast. Volcaniclastic material from these two environments was compared using granulometry, componentry, and mapping. Lithofacies from the CRBG contained abundant ash and lapilli sized clasts with a high …

“Lovely Is The Hillside” An Ecocritical Analysis Of The Narrative Function Of Setting Elements In Njal’S Saga, Michelle Fae Jones
Master's Theses
This paper uses an ecocritical lens to examine the portrayal of Iceland’s physical environment in Njal’s Saga. Drawing on historical and scientific context, this paper applies the ecocritical lens using an interdisciplinary approach to explore how the author crafted a narrative that idealizes Iceland’s Saga Age, selectively highlighting aspects of the environment that align with a vision of the land’s fertility and the people’s honor. This paper seeks to uncover the nuances of the author’s portrayal through a comparative analysis of four English translations of the saga. Applying the ecocritical lens allows for a deeper discussion of the implications for …

Dissertations
Given the current political climate of division, the study of history is important now more than ever, but the value of the study of history has been marginalized. This study used student focus groups to understand ways in which history could be taught in such a way that its importance is emphasized through relevance and connection to current social and political issues and through student-centered learning. This study also determined how history could help students evaluate and think critically about historical content. This study drew on the experiences of community college students who have taken a higher education history course …
Power In Picturebooks: A Teacher's Critical Multicultural Analysis Of Illustrated Versions Of Little Red Riding Hood, Adrianna Catherine Galtieri
Power In Picturebooks: A Teacher's Critical Multicultural Analysis Of Illustrated Versions Of Little Red Riding Hood, Adrianna Catherine Galtieri
Theses and Dissertations
This study is a critical examination of the ways power is depicted in six illustrated versions of the "Little Red Riding Hood" story. Anchored in the notions that children's texts are neither ideologically neutral nor inherently benign, a kindergarten teacher analyzed "Little Red Riding Hood" tales for the ways the main character acts and/or is acted upon. Traditional versions of the story are often read as didactic tales that remind young readers to obey their parents in order to stay safe. However, the findings of this study suggest that reimagined versions of the classic tale can open important conversations about …
