Emergent Themes In Identity Development For Transracial Adoptees: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, Andrew G. Cecil

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to examine the identity development processes of transracial adoptees in college, using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) to explore the lived experiences of individuals from this community through in-depth interviewing. This study identified nine superordinate themes and eighteen sub-themes providing knowledge on the dynamic processes of multidimensional identity development of transracial adoptees in college. Despite variability and differences across participant experiences, these themes function as major paradigms illustrating participants’ understanding of their respective identity development and lived experiences. The results of this study may serve as a basis for further exploration of transracial adoptees’ identity …

Solar Photovoltaics As Climate Change Adaptations For Farmers In West Bengal, India: Barriers Within A Food-Water-Energy Nexus Approach, Emily Rochford

Capstone Collection

This capstone research project seeks to identify and address barriers to the use of solar photovoltaics (PV) as an adaptation method to climate change for farmers in West Bengal, India. These barriers are examined within the context of the food-water-energy nexus, particularly concerning the ability of many small holder farmers to produce their own food and sustain their livelihoods. Previous studies have examined both energy access and renewable energy development in West Bengal, and also the food-water-energy nexus in its application to climate change. However, there is minimal literature on how renewable energy development should be applied within the nexus …

Identifying at-risk patients through early assessment of nutritional and functional status upon admission is critical to personalizing care and improving discharge outcomes.

Context: A 24-bed adult medical-surgical unit in a 173-bed suburban hospital in Northern California is part of a large not-for-profit healthcare organization. Interventions: Nursing staff received education on the Enhanced Recovery Medicine (ERM) pathway designed to prevent HAD. A visual display board, maintained and updated by unit champions, gave staff performance feedback. Nursing leadership reviewed admission assessments and addressed barriers …

The Runaway Train Of Mandated Reporting, Katie Louras Aug 2024

The Runaway Train Of Mandated Reporting, Katie Louras

San Diego Law Review

Mandated reporting was broadly enacted in the 1960s with good intentions and in a very different historical context regarding societal knowledge and recognition of child abuse. It has since expanded drastically regarding who must report and what must be reported. In the same sixty years, no research has demonstrated its efficacy. However, research does suggest that mandated reporting creates independent harms concentrated within low-income and minority communities. On top of the potential trauma of an investigation stemming from a report, mandated reporting also serves to isolate families, cutting them off from community support. Mandated reporters are most commonly those in …

A Comparative Illustration Of Trip- And Activity-Based Modeling Techniques, Steven Hayden Atchley Aug 2024

A Comparative Illustration Of Trip- And Activity-Based Modeling Techniques, Steven Hayden Atchley

Theses and Dissertations

Activity-based travel demand models are generally considered superior to their trip-based counterparts, as activity-based models (ABMs) explicitly model individuals in contrast to the aggregate nature of trip-based models. There have been a number of comparisons between trip- and activity-based models, but these comparisons focus almost exclusively on the technical ability of the two model types, while not considering the practical benefits an ABM may or may not have to a transportation agency. This research performs a more holistic comparison between trip- and activity-based models, focused specifically on the practical differences between model types, both in terms of usability and capability …

The Importance Of Experience: Supporting Pupils’ Creative Writing About The Natural World, Christopher Hanley, David Cooper, Jennifer Rowntree

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

The first part of this article considers the challenge of supporting pupils to write creatively about the natural world. It examines a text by a gifted young writer: Diary of a Young Naturalist by Dara McAnulty. It asks what the challenges might be for pupils who maybe motivated to model their writing on McAnulty’s, but have limited experience of the natural world. Drawing on the scholarly work of John Dixon, Robert Eaglestone and others, the article highlights the importance of pupil experience in the formation of their writerly voice, thereby emphasising the need for writing pedagogies that deepen and enrich …

Changing Landscape Of Liver Transplant In The United States—Time For A New Innovative Way To Define And Utilize The “Non-Standard Liver Allograft”—A Proposal, Rashmi Seth, Kenneth Andreoni

Department of Surgery Faculty Papers

Since the first liver transplant was performed over six decades ago, the landscape of liver transplantation in the US has seen dramatic evolution. Numerous advancements in perioperative and operative techniques have resulted in major improvements in graft and patient survival rates. Despite the increase in transplants performed over the years, the waitlist mortality rate continues to remain high. The obesity epidemic and the resultant metabolic sequelae continue to result in more marginal donors and challenging recipients. In this review, we aim to highlight the changing characteristics of liver transplant recipients and liver allograft donors. We focus on issues relevant in …

The “Horizontal Separation Of Powers” After National Pork Producers Council V. Ross, Bradley W. Joondeph Aug 2024

The “Horizontal Separation Of Powers” After National Pork Producers Council V. Ross, Bradley W. Joondeph

San Diego Law Review

The Supreme Court’s decision in National Pork Producers Council v. Ross (NPPC) held that California’s Proposition 12—which forbids the sale of pork in the state derived from pigs born of sows confined “in a cruel manner”—does not violate the dormant Commerce Clause. Specifically, the Court held that the law neither regulates “extraterritorially” (despite the fact that nearly all the pork sold in California is produced in other states) nor imposes an undue burden on interstate commerce. While the Court’s rationale in NPPC was somewhat fractured, the decision nonetheless established some important points. First, a state law’s out-of-state “practical …

Exploration Of Large-Scale Vegetation Transition In Wet Ecosystems: A Comparison Of Conifer Seedling Abundance Across Burned Vs. Unburned Forest-Peatland Ecotones In Western Patagonia, Kyla Zaret, Andres Holz

Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations

Altered fire regimes, combined with a warmer and drier climate, have been eroding the resilience of temperate rainforests and peatlands worldwide and leading to alternative post-fire vegetation communities. Chronic anthropogenic burning of temperate rainforests at the forest-peatland ecotone in western Patagonia appears to have shifted vegetation communities in poorly-drained sites from forests dominated by the threatened conifer, Pilgerodendron uviferum, to peat-accumulating wetlands covered by Sphagnum mosses. We collected and modeled post-reburn field data using ordinations and hierarchical Bayesian regressions to examine mechanisms through which P. uviferum forests may recover following fire or become locked into alternative development pathways by comparing …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The siderophore-cephalosporin cefiderocol (FDC) presents a promising treatment option for carbapenem-resistant (CR) P. aeruginosa (PA). FDC circumvents traditional porin and efflux-mediated resistance by utilizing TonB-dependent receptors (TBDRs) to access the periplasmic space. Emerging FDC resistance has been associated with loss of function mutations within TBDR genes or the regulatory genes controlling TBDR expression. Further, difficulties with antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) and unexpected negative clinical treatment outcomes have prompted concerns for heteroresistance, where a single lineage isolate contains resistant subpopulations not detectable by standard AST. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of TBDR mutations among clinical isolates of P. aeruginosa …

Living Dead Forests: Assessing Detrital Services In Puget Sound Pseudotsuga Menziesii Ecosystems, Forrest Becker

Capstone Collection

Coarse woody debris (CWD), the detrital result of down wood recruitment, contributes to wildlife habitat, nutrient cycling, morphological processes like soil formation, and each forest’s sense of place but if undermanaged can fuel wildfires or obstruct stakeholder use. Despite its ubiquity in Puget Sound Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) forests in Washington, USA, few studies quantify the exact ecosystem services which down wood provides. This study seeks to understand how forest managers can estimate the ecosystem services of down wood and how human communities perceive down wood management between community, public, and private Douglas fir (P. menziesii) …

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

  • ‘Early detection and rapid response’ (EDRR) is the most successful framework for preventative invasive species management, but prioritizing localized EDRR actions with limited resources is challenging. An approach that ranks individual locations, such as waterbodies, for EDRR by combining an invasive species' establishment risk with the practicality of managing it could help set reasonable priorities.
  • Here, we worked with regional practitioners in Arkansas, USA, and the broader Southeastern USA to co-produce a workflow for preventative aquatic invasive species management that (1) estimates establishment risk under current and future climates with a species distribution model, (2) scores waterbodies according to difficulty …

Under climatic warming, glaciers are becoming a secondary source of atmospheric contaminants originally released into the environment decades ago. This phenomenon has been well-documented for glaciers near emission sources. However, less is known about polar ice sheets and ice caps. Radionuclides are one of the contaminants that can be remobilised through ice melting and accumulate in cryoconite material on the surface of glaciers. To understand the cycling of radionuclides in polar glacial contexts, we evaluate the radioactivity of cryoconite samples from Flade Isblink, a High Arctic ice cap in northeast Greenland. The measured radioactivity is among the highest reported across …

Nfl Franchise Departures And Nearby Home Prices, Brad R. Humphreys, Geoffrey Propheter Aug 2024

Nfl Franchise Departures And Nearby Home Prices, Brad R. Humphreys, Geoffrey Propheter

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

Research shows that US professional sports facilities positively impact nearby house prices. New facilities typically have existing teams, complicating a separate assessment of the impact of teams and facilities. Existing research analyzed departures of pro basketball teams, but arenas host many non-sporting events. These results may not generalize. We exploit the relocation of two professional football teams to investigate the impact of team departures on home sales. Difference-in-differences and repeat sales model results indicate proximity to one team represented an amenity while proximity to the other did not. Differences in urban form likely explains this heterogeneity.
