Wolverine Habitat Suitability Analysis In Lake County, Colorado, Using Gis, Jake Hostnik Aug 2024

Wolverine Habitat Suitability Analysis In Lake County, Colorado, Using Gis, Jake Hostnik

Geography and the Environment: Graduate Student Capstones

This project explores the reintroduction of the wolverine (Gulo gulo luscus) to Colorado’s mountainous regions, where the species has been extirpated due to habitat destruction and human activities. The study uses Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to identify optimal habitats for wolverine reintroduction, considering factors like snowpack duration, prey availability, and human disturbance. By creating a GIS-based habitat suitability model, this research will guide conservationists in selecting reintroduction sites. The project addresses the species' role in maintaining alpine ecosystem balance and contributes to the broader understanding of biodiversity restoration in the face of climate change. Results will inform future conservation planning …

Key Largo Mangrove Population Monitoring: A Remote Sensing Analysis And Classification Methodology Review, David Lackajs Aug 2024

Key Largo Mangrove Population Monitoring: A Remote Sensing Analysis And Classification Methodology Review, David Lackajs

Geography and the Environment: Graduate Student Capstones

Mangrove forests are some of the world's most bio-diverse habitats, providing essential services to the surrounding coasts. Removal of these habitats has a devastating impact on the ecosystems within them. The Florida Keys are some of the last areas in the United States with extensive mangrove populations. One specific area, John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo, has been under state protection since 1959. For that reason, mangrove forest habitats there are less fragmented. This study uses remotely sensed imagery to quantify and analyze mangrove populations in this area using two methods: sub-pixel analysis and supervised classification. The …

Apparent Joint Swarms Formed By The Crack-Jump Process, D. C.P. Peacock, B. Leiss, M. W. Anderson Aug 2024

Apparent Joint Swarms Formed By The Crack-Jump Process, D. C.P. Peacock, B. Leiss, M. W. Anderson

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Joint swarms can be important components of fractured reservoirs. They are often explained as damage around faults or related to mechanical differences between layers, although this does not explain the close spacing of the joints. Joint swarms around Bergen (Norway) are described, which are not related to exposed faults and are not influenced by layering or foliation in the Lower Palaeozoic gneisses. We suggest an evolution whereby: (1) a zone of microcracks develops; (2) one microcrack propagates and becomes connected to a source of mineralising fluid; (3) the fracture becomes a microvein, with a higher tensile strength than the microcracked …

Domestic Exertions: Soldier-Servants, Military Elites, And Securitized Labor In India, Taveeshi Singh Aug 2024

Domestic Exertions: Soldier-Servants, Military Elites, And Securitized Labor In India, Taveeshi Singh

Dissertations - ALL

This dissertation explores the politics of gender, labor, national security, and social class in India through an examination of a coercive domestic labor regime in the Indian Army. Previous scholarship has focused on the neoliberal state-sponsored global care chains and immigrant women workers from formerly colonized nations, many in Asia, catering to wealthy ‘civilian’ households in the global North. However, little is known about the roles, relationalities, and infrastructures of servitude, inhabited primarily by racialized men, that endure within the domestic life of postcolonial state institutions long after the retreat of European colonial regimes. I present an intervention by providing …

Bridging Heritage And Identity: Integrated Platform Design For Chinese American History Exploration, Zhiru Chen Aug 2024

Bridging Heritage And Identity: Integrated Platform Design For Chinese American History Exploration, Zhiru Chen

Theses - ALL

Local history museums play a key role in historical education, identity strengthening, and community connections. However, many Chinese Americans are unwilling to visit these museums, which weakens the museums’ positive impact on these communities, and they miss out on opportunities to connect with local history and culture. I focused on 3 important factors that can impact minorities’ engagement—cultural representative, low-cost participation, and interactive visiting experience. I conducted semi-structured individual interviews with 10 U.S. born Asian American adults and conducted case study on several design projects. Inspired by research and user feedback, I created Origin Story Project (OSP) - an integrated …

Pulling Up The Tangled Roots Of Rural Nostalgia: A Rhetorical Study Of Story And Space, Nature And Nation, Emily Pifer Aug 2024

Pulling Up The Tangled Roots Of Rural Nostalgia: A Rhetorical Study Of Story And Space, Nature And Nation, Emily Pifer

Dissertations - ALL

Drawing from queer and feminist methodologies, Pulling Up the Tangled Roots of Rural Nostalgia engages rhetorical analysis of popular culture texts, specifically the film The Power of the Dog (2021) and television shows Schitt’s Creek (2015-2020) and Reservation Dogs (2021- ), and material spaces, specifically Yellowstone National Park, to develop a framework for tracing how particular constructions of rural nostalgia (such as “the small town,” “the frontier,” “the cowboy,” “the Indian Other,” “the wilderness”) circulate back and forth across widely consumed digital texts, collective imaginaries, political structures, and material spaces. As my dissertation pulls up and examines the tangled roots …

Three Essays On Socio-Spatial Exclusion Of Disabled People, Fitore Hyseni Aug 2024

Three Essays On Socio-Spatial Exclusion Of Disabled People, Fitore Hyseni

Dissertations - ALL

This dissertation consists of three papers that document socio-spatial exclusion of disabled people. In the first paper, titled “The Disability Penalty: Evidence of Housing Discrimination from a Correspondence Audit Study,” I investigated disability discrimination in the U.S. rental housing market. Access to housing is a necessity that can further exacerbate socio-economic challenges experienced by disabled people. Despite reports of differential treatment of disabled tenants by landlords being on the rise, there have been no rigorous studies investigating them. Using a correspondence audit study, I investigated if landlords in the U.S. discriminate against disabled people. Findings show that disabled applicants were …

Improving Students’ Mineral And Rock Identification Skills Through Service-Learning, Josphine Chaumba, Jeff Chaumba Aug 2024

Improving Students’ Mineral And Rock Identification Skills Through Service-Learning, Josphine Chaumba, Jeff Chaumba

Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education

This paper reports on a service-learning component introduced in an upper-level undergraduate geology course. Students identified rock types used by a local countertop manufacturing company and made fliers describing their mode of formation. Students then completed a final rock identification exam. To assess the effect of participating in the service-learning on students’ rockidentification abilities, an Independent Samples t-test was used to compare scores of students that completed the course to those from previous semesters who did not participate in service-learning. Students who participated in service-learning achieved higher final rock identification exam test scores (M = 91.71, SD = 1.59) in …

The Exhibit And Beyond: Attendees, Collaborating Organizations, And Decision Makers Responding To A Photovoice Project, Cara Dienno, Corey Martz, Lauren Collins, Mimiko Watanabe

Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education

Photovoice aims to impact those who view photographs and stories in culminating exhibits. This multi-phase research project, completed in partnership with city government and community partners, explored photovoice impacts on exhibit attendees, collaborating organizations, and decision-makers. Results show increased levels of awareness, concern, and willingness to take action among exhibit attendees. Additionally, collaborating organizations and decision-makers saw the power of “thicker” public engagement processes, like photovoice, to provide useful data to aid decision-making.

Spatializing Community-Based Learning: How A Critical Geography Framework Can Foster Understandings Of Structural Inequality And Egalitarian Relationships, Roseann Liu, Sarah Fischmann, Ashley Hong, Kathleen Melville

Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education

Critical service learning is an approach that works toward social transformation and egalitarian partnerships. However, the ways in which space facilitates or undermines this approach has been largely unexplored. Drawing on a case study from an urban education course, we argue that a critical geography framework can develop students’ understandings of structural inequalities and nurture egalitarian relationships between partners.

When “Doing With” Can Be Without: Employing Critical Service-Learning Strategies In Creating The “New Orleans Black Worker Organizing History” Digital Timeline, Sarah Fouts Aug 2024

When “Doing With” Can Be Without: Employing Critical Service-Learning Strategies In Creating The “New Orleans Black Worker Organizing History” Digital Timeline, Sarah Fouts

Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education

Analyzing the development of the “New Orleans Black Worker Organizing History” digital humanities timeline, this case study addresses the inevitability of transient partnerships between students and community members, while pushing back on the notion of “authentic relationships” in service learning. Embracing the ephemerality of service-learning projects, I focus more on intentional strategies that can lead to transformative learning experiences and help to create a more even playing field in knowledge production. I link critical service learning with feminist pedagogy to offer collaborative strategies that better leverage resources to bridge campus and community.

Translating Encounters: Connecting Indigenous Young People With Higher Education Through A Transmedia Project, Kristine Alexander, Hudson Eagle Bear, Tesla Heavy Runner, Ashley Henrickson, Taylor Little

Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education

This piece draws on multiple voices to reflect on a collaborative project between universitybased researchers and a local community organization devoted to Indigenous Blackfoot children and their families. The evolution of the project from one based on photoelicitation to one devoted to building a digital storytelling library meant a methodological shift to acknowledge the role of translation in encounters between university researchers and community practitioners, between Elders and youth, and between settlers and Indigenous people. Our experience provides lessons on the importance of taking seriously the moments when difference is encountered and translated during the research and community-building process.

Pursuing Reciprocity In Engaged Scholarship Partnerships Using Community Sustainability Certification Programs, Elyzabeth W. Engle, Michele W. Halsell

Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education

In recent years, there has been a proliferation of sustainability certification programs at the local, state, and national level to highlight the use of policies, programs, and infrastructure to achieve sustainable development outcomes within communities. In this paper, we use examples from Penn State’s Sustainable Communities Collaborative to demonstrate how institutions with community-engaged scholarship programs can use these certification programs to enhance program operation and reciprocity by identifying projects, engaging new disciplines, and improving relevance.

Collaboration And Advocacy: A Community-University Partnership And The Well-Being Of Children, Alycia Elfreich, Robert Helfenbein Aug 2024

Collaboration And Advocacy: A Community-University Partnership And The Well-Being Of Children, Alycia Elfreich, Robert Helfenbein

Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education

This paper examines a case study of a community-university collaboration in a Midwestern suburban community. In an effort to promote the well-being of students, a collaborative youth initiative partnership was created alongside a local university, public schools, and other community organizations. We reflect upon this collaboration and the need for a holistic approach to child development through community partnerships. We also address embedded tensions that call for a more transparent approach to challenges of cross-cultural work.

Enhancing Service-Learning Experiences For International Students: An Auto-Ethnography And A Dialogue, Li Mao, Laura Servage, Donna Chovanec Aug 2024

Enhancing Service-Learning Experiences For International Students: An Auto-Ethnography And A Dialogue, Li Mao, Laura Servage, Donna Chovanec

Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education

This auto-ethnographic study recounts the experiences of an international doctoral student in a service-learning (SL) placement. The narrative discusses the cultural and linguistic barriers that the student faced, both in the classroom and in her SL field placement. The authors use the student’s secondary sources as well as a series of reflective dialogues as data toward an analysis of the learning needs of linguistic and cultural minorities in service-learning—an as of yet underexplored area of research in service-learning pedagogy.

Insurance Coverage And Flood Exposure In The Gulf Of Mexico Region: Risk, Social Vulnerability, Urban Form, And Scale, Anissa J. Hyde Aug 2024

Insurance Coverage And Flood Exposure In The Gulf Of Mexico Region: Risk, Social Vulnerability, Urban Form, And Scale, Anissa J. Hyde

LSU Master's Theses

Increasing flood losses in the Gulf of Mexico pose serious threats to resilience and insurability. The purpose of this study is to understand how scale, social vulnerability, risk and urban form relate to NFIP insurance coverage and flood exposure. Our multilevel models identify that flooding is significantly clustered by region and counties, especially shoreline counties. Our measures of risk suggest that the FEMA Special Flood Hazard Areas underestimates risk and exposure when compared with Flood Factor, and that there is some compensation in terms of insurance coverage, suggesting a pattern of adverse selection. Older housing stock appears both less insured …

The Influence Of Individual Characteristics On Human Immunodeficiency Virus Testing In Puerto Rico, Jose Au Lay Aug 2024

The Influence Of Individual Characteristics On Human Immunodeficiency Virus Testing In Puerto Rico, Jose Au Lay

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

In 2016, there were 17,072 people living with HIV in Puerto Rico. Most HIV cases were among men, with the primary mode of transmission identified as men who have sex with other men followed by heterosexual contact. Among women, heterosexual contact was the primary mode of HIV transmission. The rise in the numbers of individuals infected with HIV through heterosexual contact suggest the prevalence of high-risk sexual behaviors including multiple sexual partners and unprotected vaginal and anal sex. Guided by the health belief model, the purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between the likelihood of HIV testing …
