Lawyers And The Abuse Of Government Power, Margaret Tarkington Jan 2025

Lawyers And The Abuse Of Government Power, Margaret Tarkington

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

The legal profession needs to amend the rules of professional conduct to protect our constitutional system of government from those most likely to effectively undermine it: lawyers. The historic federal indictment against President Donald Trump for conspiring to stay in power after losing the 2020 presidential election included five attorney co-conspirators: Rudy Giuliani, John Eastman, Sidney Powell, Jeffrey Clark, and Kenneth Chesebro. Eight lawyers were indicted in Georgia on similar charges.

Lawyers weren’t just involved in Trump’s plot; they devised and enabled it. Rather than accurately advise Trump that he had lost and needed to concede, lawyers crafted a plan …

Deep Learning-Driven Biometric Security: Advancing Liveness Detection And Anti-Spoofing Techniques, Banafsheh Adami

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Biometric authentication has become a key part of our everyday lives—from unlocking smartphones with a fingerprint or face to verifying identities in banks and airports. These systems rely on our unique physical or behavioral traits, making them both convenient and secure. Unlike passwords, biometrics cannot be forgotten or stolen in the traditional sense. However, they are not without risk. One of the biggest concerns is spoofing: attempts by attackers to fool systems using fake biometric traits, such as silicone fingerprints or AI-generated videos.

As generative AI tools become more powerful and accessible, the ability to create convincing fake biometric data …

Judge Ai: Assessing Large Language Models In Judicial Decision-Making, Eric A. Posner, Shivam Saran Jan 2025

Judge Ai: Assessing Large Language Models In Judicial Decision-Making, Eric A. Posner, Shivam Saran

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Can large language models (LLMs) replace human judges? By replicating a prior 2 x 2 factorial experiment conducted on 31 U.S. federal judges, we evaluate the legal reasoning of OpenAI’s GPT-4o. The experiment involves a simulated appeal in an international war crimes case, with two altered variables: the degree to which the defendant is sympathetically portrayed and the consistency of the lower court’s decision with precedent. We find that GPT-4o is strongly affected by precedent but not by sympathy, similar to students who were subjects in the same experiment but the opposite of the professional judges, who were influenced by …

“Move Fast And Break Things”: Innovation, Stability, And Trust In The Growth Of Revolut., Belen Blanco Mendoza

Business ETD Collections

In this research project, I chose to examine the strategies used in the growth of the fintech Revolut, namely the ’move-fast-and-break-things’ strategy that was employed at the beginning of the company. With this in mind, I decided on two Research Questions, “With the benefit of hindsight, and a focus on problems caused by low security and poor customer support, is Revolut’s ‘move fast and break things’ philosophy a good strategy for the business?” and “Will Revolut’s new fraud prevention strategies, and advances in AI help recover the lost goodwill caused by their earlier ineffective strategies?”, which guided me …

Founder Worship, Effective Altruism, And Corporate Governance, Jennifer S. Fan, Xuan-Thao Nguyen Jan 2025

Founder Worship, Effective Altruism, And Corporate Governance, Jennifer S. Fan, Xuan-Thao Nguyen

Law Faculty Research and Publications

Founders are the heart of any startup. Oftentimes, they are given considerable latitude in managing a company, particularly if they are hailed as a visionary founder in a pathbreaking new industry. Additionally, it is assumed that underpinning their actions is the desire to do good. Unfortunately, sometimes this leads to what we term founder worship where the promise of the founder and the innovation may lead to perverse outcomes because too much control is ceded to the founder and there is a lack (or sometimes complete absence of) corporate governance. When unlimited control is coupled with "do gooderism," which in …

News Mediated Reporting And Governmental Narratives About The Enforcement Of Elite Criminality: Exploring The Social Construction Of Financial Frauds And Discrepancies In Punishment, Dominic J. Zicari

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines how financial crime enforcement decisions are socially constructed through a qualitative content analysis of news articles and government communications pertaining to two specific cases: the Enron scandal of 2001 and the subprime mortgage crisis of 2008. The study was guided by a theoretical framework that utilizes Barak’s (2017) theory of state-routinized crime control. The rigorous analysis of 394 news articles and government communication documents revealed that the media and the state rarely framed the subprime mortgage crisis as a criminal issue. Although the Enron scandal was frequently described as financial crime, journalists and government communicators were often …

Everything New Is Old Again: The Coming Metaverse, Platforms As Premises, And Addressing Harms That Occur Behind The Veil Of Scale, Lara Putnam, Jena Martin

Faculty Articles

Increasingly, social media companies have engaged in the creation, development, and deployment of "worlds" within a virtual reality setting, leading to significant interactions among users within these engineered spaces. However, this expansion has also been accompanied by harms. While some harms are unique to immersive reality technology, many mirror harms that occur in the analog environment, including fraud, theft, verbal abuse, and child sexual exploitation. Others replicate harms that have already exploded in non-immersive online spaces, including image-based sexual exploitation, cyberstalking, and invasion of privacy. Unfortunately, the architecture and infrastructure of these spaces has created what we coin here to …

The Swiping Desire: Intimacy, Libidinal Capitalism, And The Digital Subject In The Tinder Swindler, Chanif Ainun Naim Jan 2025

The Swiping Desire: Intimacy, Libidinal Capitalism, And The Digital Subject In The Tinder Swindler, Chanif Ainun Naim

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

This article examines how dating applications operate as libidinal infrastructures that restructure and commodify intimacy within platform capitalism, using The Tinder Swindler as a cultural case study. Employing a visual-narrative approach within the framework of Critical Discourse Analysis, the film is analyzed to reveal the structural exploitation of user affect and desire. Grounded in Lacanian psychoanalysis and Baudrillard’s simulation theory, the study argues that these platforms capitalize on the subject’s ontological lack (manque) which fuels desire as the desire for the Other’s desire. This psychic lack sustains a perpetual pursuit of recognition that can never be fulfilled. The swindler’s hyper-curated …

Political Communication In A Multicultural Metropolis: Chinese Ethnic Media And The 2023 Toronto Mayoral By-Election, Dongwei Lin Jan 2025

Political Communication In A Multicultural Metropolis: Chinese Ethnic Media And The 2023 Toronto Mayoral By-Election, Dongwei Lin

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Chinese are the second largest visible minority group in Canada and the most frequently reported ethnic or cultural origin in Toronto. Mandarin and Cantonese are, respectively, the largest and third largest non-official languages in Toronto. However, little research exists on the role of the Chinese ethnic community in Toronto municipal politics, especially the role of Chinese ethnic media in Toronto municipal elections.

The key argument of this thesis is that “Chinese ethnic media represent complementary public sphere(s) for informing and engaging Chinese Canadians in local political participation and discussion.” Through the 2023 Toronto Mayoral By-Election case study, this thesis examines …

Sting: A Stealthy Backdoor Attack On Gnn-Based Malicious Domain Detection Via Dns Perturbations, Muhammad Anan, Mahmoud Nazzal, Abdallah Khreishah, Issa Khalil, Nhathai Phan, Ahmad Sawalmeh

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Detecting malicious Internet domains is essential for safeguarding against various online threats. The current approach to detecting malicious domains (MDD) employs a graph neural network (GNN) method, which uses DNS logs to construct heterogeneous graphs for determining the maliciousness of unknown domains. Despite its success, this method is vulnerable to data poisoning attacks where an adversary can manipulate specific graph nodes to implant a backdoor into the model during training. To showcase the vulnerability, we propose a stealthy trigger injection attack on node features and graph structure in MDD, dubbed (STING). The attacker carefully manipulates selected features and edges of …

Social Connections And Bond Pricing, Uliana Filatova Jan 2025

Social Connections And Bond Pricing, Uliana Filatova

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

In this manuscript, I present two essays that examine the role of social connections in corporate bond pricing.

The first essay examines the effect of interlocking connections between investment banks and corporate executives or directors on bond underpricing and underwriting fees. Interlocking is associated with more accurate bond pricing, reflected in significantly lower excess initial returns on newly issued bonds. Specifically, interlocking reduces underpricing by 6.25-14.01 basis points, saving, on average, up to $935,000 per issuance cost. The reduction in underpricing is most pronounced for high-yield bonds and bond IPOs, where the financial expertise of interlocked investment banks is particularly …

Content Subversion Against 1 Information-Based Systems, Junjie Xiong, Ian Markwood, Dakun Shen, Yao Liu, Zhuo Lu

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present a novel class of content subversion attacks against information-based services, causing documents to appear to humans dissimilar to the underlying content extracted by information-based services. We demonstrate the significant impact of these attacks on real-world systems through five distinct variants. Our first attack allows academic paper writers and reviewers to collude via subverting the automatic reviewer assignment systems in current use by academic conferences including INFOCOM, which we reproduced. Our second attack renders ineffective plagiarism detection software, particularly Turnitin, targeting specific small plagiarism similarity scores to appear natural and evade detection. In our third attack, we place masked …

Generative Identity Theft: Criminalizing Deepfakes Using The Right Of Publicity, Dustin Marlan

Faculty Publications

The right of publicity grants individuals control over the commercial use of their identity, particularly name, image, and likeness. Currently, publicity laws are a fragmented patchwork of state statutes and case law, leading to frequent calls for reform, including the establishment of a federal right of publicity. This issue has gained renewed urgency amid the rise of generative artificial intelligence and deepfake technologies. In response, Congress has introduced multiple bipartisan proposals—most prominently, the Senate’s No FAKES Act and the House’s No AI FRAUD Act—that seek to create federal protections against unauthorized digital replicas of likeness, voice, and other aspects of …

Background: While whistleblowing (WB) has attracted growing research interest in recent years, several critical WB-related issues remain underexplored. Purpose: This study examines the impact of external WB allegations on a firm’s organizational capital (OC). Such allegations often indicate management’s failure to address employee concerns internally, spotlighting potential deficiencies in internal reporting systems, employee communication, training, and trust in organizational fairness. To mitigate reputational damage, restore employee trust, and prevent future incidents, we posit that WB firms respond by increasing OC investment. Research Design: We employ a difference-in-differences approach, comparing OC changes in WB-targeted firms with those in a propensity score-matched …
