The Complexity Of Crime, John E. Angell Nov 1977

The Complexity Of Crime, John E. Angell

Other Works

Although fictional representations of crime depicted in TV shows, movies, and other popular media tend to be simplistic and unrealistic, these portrayals shape much of the American conventional wisdom about crime. This article contrasts fictional depictions of crime and criminals with how criminality actually is seen in society, what causes it, and how it can be addressed.

Where The Law Ends: The Social Control Of Corporate Behavior (By Christopher D. Stone), Dale A. Normington May 1976

Where The Law Ends: The Social Control Of Corporate Behavior (By Christopher D. Stone), Dale A. Normington

University of Dayton Law Review

There has been a growing concern recently that many of society's ills are a result of a lack of social responsibility on the part of America's business corporations. The corporation is portrayed as acting without regard for the public welfare or the morality of its decision. Pollution, lack of product safety, bribery, political intrigue, financial frauds, energy abuses and even inflation are among the charges leveled against corporations. If the corporation is made more "socially responsible," it is argued, its impact on the "quality of life" will be positive and beneficial. The advocates of corporate responsibility have proposed many solutions …

Criminal Consumer Fraud: A Victim-Oriented Analysis, Donald P. Rothschild, Bruce C. Throne Mar 1976

Criminal Consumer Fraud: A Victim-Oriented Analysis, Donald P. Rothschild, Bruce C. Throne

Michigan Law Review

The poor and the elderly are the principal victims of the high pressure and often sophisticated sale techniques of criminal consumer fraud in this country. The problem is compounded when the poor and the elderly live in inner cities where legal assistance is costly and inadequate, and the courts, prosecutors, and investigators are overburdened. Yet the executive and legislative agencies responsible for law enforcement continue to assign a low priority to criminal consumer fraud. President Ford has reflected this orientation: "For effective management [of law enforcement], we first have to have some hard decisions on priorities. As a starter, I …

Integration Of Public Utility Holding Companies, Robert F. Ritchie Jan 1954

Integration Of Public Utility Holding Companies, Robert F. Ritchie

Michigan Legal Studies Series

The Public Utility Holding Company Act of 1935 was one of the most controversial pieces of legislation ever enacted by Congress, but despite this fact it has withstood numerous and vigorous attacks upon its constitutionality and, further, it has never been amended in any material respect. The Securities and Exchange Commission was confronted in 1935 with one of the most difficult administrative tasks in modern history. How it met and resolved the difficult problems of geographical and economic integration, arising under the so-called "death sentence" provisions of this Act, is the subject matter of this publication.

The research involved in …

Control Of Securities Selling, Watson Washburn Apr 1933

Control Of Securities Selling, Watson Washburn

Michigan Law Review

President Roosevelt in his inaugural address stated as one of the most important immediate necessities of the country "a strict supervision of all banking and credits and investments." This statement is in line with his campaign criticism of the failure of the Republican national administration to check the inordinate inflation of security prices in 1929. There is no doubt that the President's program in this respect received a sympathetic hearing throughout the country. Many state legislatures are now considering changes in state laws regulating securities. It is interesting that some States with rigid blue sky laws seem to be quite …
