Inspiring Macro Practice Through Rural Social Work: Teaching Notes On Experiential Learning, Dana C. Branson

Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal

Experiential learning is the cornerstone of social work education and has been shown to be highly beneficial to students, especially with increased self-confidence in skills, interest in similar work post-graduation, cultural humility, application of theory to practice, problem solving skills, and critical thinking. Additionally, experiential learning opportunities support the nine competencies of social work education and provides students with an opportunity to try out their budding skills with the guidance and supervision of seasoned social workers. This paper discusses an innovative course project that allowed a group of social work students to engage in macro-level social work practice and grant …

Investing In Virginia Through Energy Efficiency: An Analysis Of The Impacts Of Rggi And The Hiee Program, Damian Pitt, I-Shian Suen, Mike Mackenzie, Adelaide Alexander, Molly Lumsden

Institute for Sustainable Energy and Environment Publications and Presentations

This study examines the low-income energy efficiency programs funded by Virginia’s participation in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI). Its goal is to understand the extent to which those programs can address the problem of high energy burdens among Virginia’s low-income residents, and to estimate the impacts that those energy efficiency investments could have on the broader Virginia economy.

Our report begins with a review of existing research on “energy burdens,” or the concept that some residents, particularly those in lower income brackets, spend a disproportionate percentage of their incomes on home energy costs (heating, cooling, etc.). We then discuss …

The “Who” In Engineering: Sociotechnical Engineering As Memorable And Relevant, Diana A. Chen, Marissa H. Forbes, Gordon D. Hoople, Susan M. Lord, Joel Alejandro Mejia

School of Engineering: Faculty Scholarship

Does emphasizing the role of people in engineering influence the memorability of engineering content? This study is part of a larger project through which our team developed a new undergraduate energy course to better reflect students’ cultures and lived experiences through asset-based pedagogies to help students develop a sociotechnical mindset in engineering problem solving. In this study, students in the class were invited to participate in semi-structured interviews (n=5) to explore our effectiveness in helping them develop a sociotechnical mindset around energy issues and conceptualize engineering as a sociotechnical endeavor. This study focuses on an activity during the interview where …

Reshaping Incentivization: An Examination Of California’S Gas Powered Vehicle Ban, Andrew Tabor Jan 2023

Reshaping Incentivization: An Examination Of California’S Gas Powered Vehicle Ban, Andrew Tabor

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

California's decision to ban the sale of new gas powered vehicles (GPVs) was a landmark decision because California's market power has the potential to shift global car production towards cleaner vehicles. As the market for electric vehicles is relatively new, supporting policies will have to be crafted to incentivize the development of this market. This paper looks at the California Solar Initiative for prior examples of how California has handled early green technology adoption policies to see if they focused on equity or efficiency. Additionally, potential re-imaginings of the subsidization and pricing of the Mexican electricity market were looked at …

Exploring Environmental Racism, Quality Of Life, And Inequalities In Kentucky Counties, Bailey Harder, James Maples Jan 2023

Exploring Environmental Racism, Quality Of Life, And Inequalities In Kentucky Counties, Bailey Harder, James Maples

Kentucky Journal of Undergraduate Scholarship

Environmental racism explores how pollution-producing industries are systematically constructed in and around poor, minority communities. Exposure to pollutants over time negatively impacts resident well being and quality of life while economic trends limit opportunities to relocated. Kentucky provides a valuable opportunity for exploring environmental racism. The state’s long dependency on coal extraction has created environmental opportunities for studying this phenomenon amid deindustrialization throughout the region. This study examines how changes in air pollution (a proxy measure of environmental toxins) correlates to poverty, quality of life, and resident racial demographics. Results indicate that Kentucky counties with higher air pollution had lower …

Zen And The Art Of Doughnut Economics: When Limits Are Strangely Liberating, Peter Doran Jan 2023

Zen And The Art Of Doughnut Economics: When Limits Are Strangely Liberating, Peter Doran

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

Kate Raworth's celebrated book, Doughnut Economics: Seven ways to think like a 21st century economist, calls for a reconciliation of our design principles for society and the economy with the rhythms and tolerances of ecological systems. It will demand something akin to a new axial revolution that will have to be experienced as much in the body and in the intimacies of a renewed care and appreciation for our relational and ecological selves as in the collective re-design of our societies, democratic decision-making and collective provisioning. Buddhist scholarship offers a distinctive contribution to this conversation invoked in a book that …

It Turned Into A Bioblitz: Urban Data Collection For Building Scientific Literacy And Environmental Connection, Kelly O'Donnell, Lisa Brundage

Publications and Research

In 2013, Macaulay Honors College redesigned its required science curriculum to focus on scientific literacy skills rather than content. Central to this shift was inclusion of a data collection event, a BioBlitz, to provide students with the basis for their own semester-long research projects. Students are teamed with naturalists in an urban green space to find as many species as they can in 24 h and to contribute to a global biodiversity database via the app iNaturalist. We have learned two important lessons: (1) developing an interdisciplinary curriculum with a high degree of experiential learning is more successful when both …

Synthesizing Marketing And General Recommendations For Social Enterprise Good Nature Argo, Katie Duffy, Isabela Ramirez, Liam Mcbride

Miller Center Fellowship

This research was conducted in Zambia as part of the Santa Clara University Miller Center Lewis Family Fellowship. It examines areas of improvement and general working relationships that social enterprise Good Nature Agro, a seed distributor, has with its three targeted customer segments: agro-dealers, NGOs, and small-scale farmers. This study seeks to understand ways in which Good Nature Agro can increase its brand visibility and customer loyalty to increase their regional foothold by implementing marketing strategies using a mixed methods approach—including interviews, ethnographies, and quantitative surveys. Analysis of the findings reveals that despite having overwhelmingly positive working relationships with Good …

Liberation Through Likhá, Melanie Eng, Jules Holland Jan 2023

Liberation Through Likhá, Melanie Eng, Jules Holland

Miller Center Fellowship

Likha is a social enterprise based in the Philippines whose mission is to empower Filipino artisan families to overcome poverty by reimagining time-honored local craft for the global market. Our research endeavored to both quantify the environmental impact of Likha’s products and production processes, as well as determine Likha’s readiness for certifications such as B Corp that signal their social and environmental performance. To accomplish this, we conducted semi-structured, in-person interviews with artisans concerning their raw materials and production processes. We found that while many of Likha’s raw materials were inherently sustainable, it was a lack of formal certification and …

Climate, Health, And Equity Implications Of Large Facility Pollution Sources In New Mexico, Gabriel Pacyniak, Angélica Ruiz, Shannon Sanchez-Youngman, Elena Krieger Jan 2023

Climate, Health, And Equity Implications Of Large Facility Pollution Sources In New Mexico, Gabriel Pacyniak, Angélica Ruiz, Shannon Sanchez-Youngman, Elena Krieger

Faculty Scholarship

In 2019, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham issued an executive order establishing a goal of cutting New Mexico greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 45 percent by 2030.1 In parallel, the state legislature enacted the 2019 Energy Transition Act (ETA), which requires New Mexico utilities to decarbonize their electricity supply by 2045.2 In keeping with these actions, state agencies issued regulations to reduce GHG emissions from oil and gas and transportation sources and to implement the ETA.

These ambitious policies are essential to address the climate-driven extreme weather events, such as record-breaking wildfires, drought, and heat, which are already impacting New …

Mother Nature On The Run: The Sec, Climate Change Disclosure, And The Major Questions Doctrine, J. Robert Brown Jr. Jan 2023

Mother Nature On The Run: The Sec, Climate Change Disclosure, And The Major Questions Doctrine, J. Robert Brown Jr.

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC or Commission) has proposed a rule that addresses the disclosure needs of investors with respect to climate change. The proposal would require that public companies tell investors about the risks to their business associated with climate change and explain the system and strategy of governance for monitoring those risks. In addition, the proposal would mandate the disclosure of certain greenhouse gas emissions.

The SEC’s proposal arrived contemporaneously with the Supreme Court’s announcement of the “major questions” doctrine. A deliberate attempt to limit the authority of the executive branch, the doctrine would restrict agencies from …

Estimating The Above Ground Biomass And Carbon In New College Of Florida’S Food Forest, Garcia Frank Jan 2023

Estimating The Above Ground Biomass And Carbon In New College Of Florida’S Food Forest, Garcia Frank

Theses & ETDs

The New College Food Forest and Carbon Farm, as it was originally coined, was a thesis project planned and installed by Jay McWilliams and Orion Morton in 2016. The intention of the food forest was not only to create a space for fruit and food production, but also to replace the existing lawn area and sequester as much carbon as possible. By estimating the amount of biomass stored and carbon that the FF has been able to sequester since its establishment, the ability of this urban food forest system to combat climate change can be quantified. The litter in the …

Museums And Placemaking: Community Museums As Catalysts For Urban Transformation, Lauren David

Theses & ETDs

Using the Anacostia Community Museum in Washington, D.C., the Wing Luke Museum in Seattle, Washington, and the Tenement Museum in New York City, this thesis investigates the potential of community museums as catalysts for social and environmental transformation. This thesis does not examine the physical and economic development of place in relation to museums; rather, it focuses on the socio-environmental benefits of community museums, highlighting the current social and environmental challenges museums face, and proposing a potential framework for standard placemaking in the museum world, provided by the Project for Public Spaces.

Better Nature: How Nature Improves Our Health And How We Can Use Nature To Do Better, Alyssa K. Snyder Jan 2023

Better Nature: How Nature Improves Our Health And How We Can Use Nature To Do Better, Alyssa K. Snyder

Theses and Graduate Projects

This research paper outlines the salubrious effects of exposure to green spaces and explores how healthcare providers in urban areas can leverage the benefits of green spaces to combat poor health outcomes from the chronic stress of urbanicity, particularly in disadvantaged populations. Focusing on the metropolitan area of Minnesota, this study acknowledges existing barriers and constraints of populations experiencing health inequities while analyzing data on green space accessibility and seeking solutions for those communities, particularly BIPOC and low-income. This paper synthesizes evidence from various studies that establish the positive associations between health and exposure to green spaces, which can also …

Capacity-Building Project To Progress The Implementation Of International Instruments To Combat Iuu Fishing (Capfish) : Workshop 3, 18-21 October 2022, World Maritime University Jan 2023

Capacity-Building Project To Progress The Implementation Of International Instruments To Combat Iuu Fishing (Capfish) : Workshop 3, 18-21 October 2022, World Maritime University

Reports

Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing is a complex and multifaceted problem, with dire consequences for aquatic ecosystems, coastal communities, fishers and fish workers, and economic and national security. It particularly affects developing countries, and is estimated to cost the global economy USD 20 billion each year. This represents foregone taxes, license fees, and revenue from resources that could have been legally exploited. Future opportunities are also lost as fish stocks dwindle and collapse, with knock-on socioeconomic effects. As those involved in IUU fishing seek to cut costs wherever possible, and are often involved in other illegal activities, IUU fishing …
