The Role Of Special Education Advocates On The Lives Of Students Facing Challenges, Ta'aha Biles Jan 2023

The Role Of Special Education Advocates On The Lives Of Students Facing Challenges, Ta'aha Biles

McNair Scholars Research Journal

Students with learning disabilities often face challenges from childhood through adulthood and their parents and caregivers need to make adjustments to support and adapt to the needs of their children to support them educationally, socially, and emotionally. Some effects on families with learning disabilities are stress, lack of support from extended family, and difficulties interacting with school staff. For these reasons, it is important for families to seek the support from special needs advocates. Minority students who are disproportionately represented within the education system may benefit from a special needs advocate, as they are often at greater risk of dropping …

Rethinking Food Regime As Gender Regime: Agrarian Change And The Politics Of Social Reproduction, Diana Mincyte

Publications and Research

This paper presents a synthetic reading of the food regime and gender regime concepts to consider current trends in deagrarianization. Its underlying goal is to articulate a research agenda for studying the food regime through the lens of gender and labor relations. Combining insights from feminist scholarship and early debates on family farming in agrarian studies, it underscores the role of social reproduction in shaping agro-food systems. Focusing on relations in production it reconsiders family, kinship and strong ties as a form of social organization in capitalist production, emphasizes the significance of ideology on the household level, and underscores the …

Resetting Coastal And Marine Tourism In A Post-Covid World, Alan Fyall, Sergio Alvarez, Robertico Croes, Jorge Ridderstaat, Maksim Godovykh

Rosen Research Review

Marine and coastal zones have long been exploited for tourism revenue, and the health of many coastal and marine environments has declined. The near-global shutdown of tourism due to the COVID-19 pandemic has offered a unique opportunity to rebuild the tourism industry using a new model. Researchers from UCF Rosen College of Hospitality Management joined a team of international researchers to present a framework for such change at the 2022 United Nations (UN) Ocean Conference in Lisbon.

Theorising From The Land: House Or Tipi Of Ir?, Justin De Leon

Ethnic Studies Faculty Articles and Research

In 2004, Anna Agathangelou and L.H.M. Ling wrote their important intervention, entitled ‘The House of IR: From Family Power Politics to the Poises of Worldism,’ that ordered various theories of International Relations within an analogy of a colonial household, calling instead for a Worldism that builds communities based on interests and support. One glaring omission from this analysis, however, is mention of indigeneity. Increasingly, in North America, the experiences of Indigenous peoples are shaping national imaginations and popular political discourses – take for instance Idle No More, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, Standing Rock, and Mauna Kea, to …

Law Of The Land: The Continuing Legacy Of Indian Law's Racist Roots And Its Impact On Native American Land Rights, Maggie Lohmann Jan 2023

Law Of The Land: The Continuing Legacy Of Indian Law's Racist Roots And Its Impact On Native American Land Rights, Maggie Lohmann

West Virginia Law Review

Throughout American history, inhumane treatment of Native nations has been legalized through treaties, court cases, and legislation. Confiscating Native land, treating Native Americans as second-class citizens, and breaking government promises to Native nations has been justified with racist stereotypes about Native Americans. Although some may believe that such atrocities only occurred in the past, this belief is unfounded. This Note examines the structural racism that supports Federal Indian Law through treaties with Native nations, racist Supreme Court Indian law opinions, and legislation that allowed the seizure of Native land. The lasting legacy of this structural racism is explored through recent …

An Electronics Eco-Labeling System For Reducing Toxic Wastewater Runoff In The Tijuana River Estuary, Keari Platt

UC Law Environmental Journal

The wastewater pollution crisis at the United States-Mexico border garners renewed attention every few decades as sewage and toxic runoff overburden treatment facilities in the border region, polluting the Southern San Diego County coastline. Following several years of increasingly catastrophic sewage discharge incidents, the City of Imperial Beach filed suit against the federal government, alleging that the United States Section of the International Boundary Water Commission’s frequent discharge of pollutants into the Tijuana River violated the federal Clean Water Act and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. The lawsuit prodded the federal government to appropriate $300 million to the Environmental …

Zen And The Art Of Doughnut Economics: When Limits Are Strangely Liberating, Peter Doran Jan 2023

Zen And The Art Of Doughnut Economics: When Limits Are Strangely Liberating, Peter Doran

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive

Kate Raworth's celebrated book, Doughnut Economics: Seven ways to think like a 21st century economist, calls for a reconciliation of our design principles for society and the economy with the rhythms and tolerances of ecological systems. It will demand something akin to a new axial revolution that will have to be experienced as much in the body and in the intimacies of a renewed care and appreciation for our relational and ecological selves as in the collective re-design of our societies, democratic decision-making and collective provisioning. Buddhist scholarship offers a distinctive contribution to this conversation invoked in a book that …

John Woolman's Aesthetics Of The Stranger, Jay David Miller Jan 2023

John Woolman's Aesthetics Of The Stranger, Jay David Miller

Faculty Publications - Department of English

Language about strangers, including ‘the heart of a stranger’ specifically, appears with frequency throughout the writings of John Woolman. This article argues that the stranger, inspired to a great extent by passages from the Bible, was a central philosophical and theological concept around which Woolman’s thought was gathered. For Woolman the stranger also functioned as a literary figure that united various parts of his work in what I refer to comprehensively as an aesthetics of the stranger. Ultimately, Woolman writing about strangers reflected his understanding of Jesus Christ as a stranger, which was the ground from which all his thinking …

Environmental Aesthetics And Environmental Justice In Jonathan Edwards’S Personal Narrative And John Woolman’S Journal, Jay David Miller Jan 2023

Environmental Aesthetics And Environmental Justice In Jonathan Edwards’S Personal Narrative And John Woolman’S Journal, Jay David Miller

Faculty Publications - Department of English

This essay examines the relationship between Christian theology, environmental aesthetics, and environmental justice in colonial America. As opposed to the work of secular writers from the early republic like J. Hector St. John de Crèvecoeur and Thomas Jefferson, the Christian environmental aesthetics of Jonathan Edwards and John Woolman have potential to address questions of environmental justice in American literary history, such as tenant exploitation, African enslavement, and Indigenous displacement. Edwards, however, worked in a pastoral literary tradition, which limited his ability to imagine environmental justice due to his commitment to the doctrine of election. Woolman, on the other hand, worked …

Inverting The Discourse Of Civilization And Barbarism In Mundo Del Fin Del Mundo And Un Viejo Que Leía Novelas De Amor By Luis Sepúlveda, Adrian Taylor Kane Jan 2023

Inverting The Discourse Of Civilization And Barbarism In Mundo Del Fin Del Mundo And Un Viejo Que Leía Novelas De Amor By Luis Sepúlveda, Adrian Taylor Kane

World Languages Faculty Publications and Presentations

American critic Raymond Leslie Williams has convincingly argued that a desire to be modern is a central characteristic of the 20th century Latin American novel. Williams's argument also coincides with Octavio Paz's assertion that modernity has been a topic of interest to Latin American intellectuals since the 19th century. A glimpse of the terminology used by authors and critics to name various Latin American movements over the past 125 years—modernismo, posmodernismo, avant-garde, modern novel, and postmodern fiction—gives us a sense of the persistent desire of Latin American authors to engage in a dialogue on …
