The Patina Of Care, Jose Alejandro Carpio May 2026

The Patina Of Care, Jose Alejandro Carpio

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

This thesis aims to address the urgent need for adaptable, socially responsive housing in Sapporo, Hokkaido. The area currently faces a crisis in rapidly aging populations, youth out-migration, housing insecurity, and high rates of domestic violence. These problems are intensified by economic strain, harsh winter conditions, and periods when cultural stigma limits access to safety and community support. As it stands, current housing systems cannot evolve with the rapidly shifting demographics and social needs of the city.

Confront these challenges. The thesis proposes a megastructure-framework grounded in the metabolism movement and the works of Metabolist architects such as Fumihiko Maki, …

Panorama, Qian Shen

MFA in Visual Art

This thesis examines the uncanny, bodily, grotesque, and metamorphic states of beings that exist between human and non-human forms. In my sculptural practice, I approach the body not as a fixed or self-contained object, but as a fluid, unstable, and continuously transforming condition. Working primarily with wool, foam, silicone, wax, latex, and metal, I use material interaction, fleshy quality, gravity, and open-ended processes to generate forms that appear unresolved, bodily, and in the middle of becoming. These sculptures often suggest skin, organs, wounds, hair, membranes, or other bodily elements, yet they resist clear identification and remain suspended between attraction and …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Delirium is an acute cognitive failure characterized by an acute onset and psychomotor disturbances. It is associated with poor outcomes in hospitalized patients, resulting in prolonged hospital stays, elevated rates of mortality, and cognitive dysfunctions after hospital discharge. The pathophysiology of delirium remains poorly understood, making the development of animal models a promising avenue for researchers to elucidate the mechanisms underlying human delirium. These models not only aid in understanding the pathophysiology and etiology of the disease but also enhance the efficacy of nonpharmacological interventions and identify pharmacological therapies. This review aims to present the most relevant and translational animal …

Contagious Rhetoric: The Generative Power And Malignant Erosion Of Rhetoric In Modern Media, Alexandra Russell May 2026

Contagious Rhetoric: The Generative Power And Malignant Erosion Of Rhetoric In Modern Media, Alexandra Russell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation develops a rhetorical framework for explaining how language circulates, shifts in meaning, and gains persuasive force in contemporary media environments. Existing models describe the movement of discourse but offer limited tools for analyzing how circulating narratives change—how affect, identity, and digital infrastructures shape that transformation. This project defines contagious rhetoric as a set of linguistic and narrative processes through which discourse becomes amplified, distorted, reclaimed, or weaponized. The studies examine two sites where these dynamics are especially visible: feminist digital storytelling in the #medusatattoo TikTok corpus and the strategic appropriation of abolitionist terminology by anti-abortion activists. These cases …

Closing The Revolution: The Criticize Water Margin Campaign And The Politics Of Surrender In Mao’S China, Yaowen Dong

Asia Pacific Perspectives

The mid 1970s witnessed a massive Maoist campaign to attack the late imperial vernacular fiction Water Margin, which had been previously favored by the Chinese Communist Party because of its elements of rebellion and egalitarianism. The paper examines the Criticize Water Margin Campaign in 1975 and 1976 that interpreted the fiction as class-reconciliation and surrender. I argue that the dramatic shift of the narratives surrounding Water Margin manifested the deeply embedded paradox between rebellion and normalization in the communist revolutionary project. Such paradox of revolution is not only the product of the infringement of the coming neoliberal world order, …

N-glycanase 1 (NGLY1) Deficiency is an ultra-rare neurodevelopmental disorder caused by biallelic loss-of-function mutations in the NGLY1 gene, leading to severe impairments in neurocognitive and motor function abilities in the affected patient population. Its core clinical features include global developmental delay, hyperkinetic movement disorders, elevation of liver transaminases, (hypo)alacrima, and progressive sensorimotor neuropathy. Due to the range of phenotypes and severity within the confirmed patient population, ongoing characterization of the disease is critical. A prospective natural history study (NHS) was conducted to further elucidate disease phenotypes and examine any changes in neurocognitive or motor function over a one-year period. Fifteen …

Large language models (LLMs) have demonstrated impressive capabilities in summarization, reasoning, and content generation, yet their inability to directly interpret large-scale omics data has limited their utility in data-driven hypothesis generation-particularly in mechanism discovery that demands the integration and interpretation of multimodal datasets, heterogeneous models, and deep domain expertise. Conversely, traditional computational algorithms excel at quantitative analysis of omics data but often rely heavily on labor-intensive, expert-driven interpretation to extract biologically meaningful insights. Here, we introduce (cointelligent single-cell spatial cell‒cell communication: iS2C2), a novel cointelligent platform that synergizes mathematically rigorous computational algorithms with the contextual reasoning capabilities of LLMs to …

Oral History Collection

In an interview with The Business Times, SMU Chairman Piyush Gupta discussed topics ranging from meditation and conservation to the future of education. On his role at SMU, he emphasised his desire to help shape tertiary education and noted that the rise of AI makes it critical to rethink how we learn. Mr Gupta believes that in an AI-driven world, students must move beyond domain knowledge to focus on interpreting information, "connecting the dots," and engaging others with genuine empathy. He is supportive of a more experiential curriculum at SMU — one that focuses on regional exposure through internships and …

Community Art Therapy: Opportunities Of Accessibility In Spaces And Materials, M Mahoney May 2026

Community Art Therapy: Opportunities Of Accessibility In Spaces And Materials, M Mahoney

Theses - ALL

Community art therapy offers opportunities to address inequities in access to therapeutic services by locating creative practices within shared, non-clinical spaces, and using nontraditional and everyday materials. This qualitative phenomenological study examined how community-based eco-art therapy, using found, foraged, recycled, and low-cost materials in a community studio, shapes participants’ experiences of accessibility, connection, and creativity. Eight adult participants attended two community-based workshops that included open-ended artmaking, a mindfulness-oriented material walk, and individual semi-structured interviews with response art. Data from interviews, field notes, and artworks were analyzed using thematic analysis. Findings indicated that participants conceptualized accessibility as multi-dimensional, encompassing cost, transportation, …

Interdisciplinary Practices In The Band Room: Repertoire As A Tool To Enrich Student Learning, Ainsley L. Brouse May 2026

Interdisciplinary Practices In The Band Room: Repertoire As A Tool To Enrich Student Learning, Ainsley L. Brouse

Theses - ALL

Interdisciplinary learning is an educational theory approach that emphasizes the importance of incorporating content from different subject areas into the teaching of one’s own topic of study. Research has presented that the use of interdisciplinary teaching practices can have several benefits on students' learning outcomes and overall academic success. Music has deep and rich historical roots that can provide students a more hands-on experience with the concepts and events they are learning in their history classes. The use of interdisciplinary practices through specific repertoire selections will not only provide students with a deeper, more meaningful experience with the music they …

Feminization, Fetishization, And Gender Hierarchy: How Trans Women Are Represented In Porn For A Cishetero Audience, May Van Linden May 2026

Feminization, Fetishization, And Gender Hierarchy: How Trans Women Are Represented In Porn For A Cishetero Audience, May Van Linden

Theses - ALL

Trans people, especially trans women, are a highly-targeted minority group and suffer rapidly-increasing discrimination, often predicated on the notion that trans women are dangerous sexual deviants. Further, trans women are often fetishized in their day-to-day lives, regularly manifesting as abuse. At the same time, demand for porn featuring trans women has skyrocketed, but literature about trans women in porn remains extraordinarily lacking in both quantity and quality. My research critically examined how trans women are represented in mainstream internet pornography consumed by a cishetero audience. I performed textual analysis of internet porn featuring trans women through a theoretical lens of …

Blue-Collar Belonging: How An Analysis Of Identity, Epistemics, And Stance Reveal Fluid Community Membership In Rural Upstate New York, Kennedy Reed Jones May 2026

Blue-Collar Belonging: How An Analysis Of Identity, Epistemics, And Stance Reveal Fluid Community Membership In Rural Upstate New York, Kennedy Reed Jones

Theses - ALL

This thesis examines how community membership is constructed in everyday conversations amongst rural blue-collar people in Upstate New York. Through a sociolinguistic approach, the data from this project was collected by recording naturally occurring conversations of rural blue-collar community over a year. These conversations were then transcribed and coded, seeking out pockets of blue-collar topics in the conversations. When doing this, blue-collar/blue-collar experiences were understood as manual work, typically not done in an office, and that does not often require a degree. Therefore, by drawing on sociolinguistic scholarship on identity, epistemics, and stance, this project argues that membership in this …

Women In Literature And Their Ephemeral Bodies, Madeline Zafon-Whalen May 2026

Women In Literature And Their Ephemeral Bodies, Madeline Zafon-Whalen

English Honors Theses

This thesis is a comparative analysis of women writers from the twentieth to twenty-first century. Works by authors such as Virginia Woolf, Margaret Atwood, and Otessa Moshfegh, contain an emerging pattern and relationship linked through an ephemeral bodied aesthetic which depicts women's bodies as deconstructed, intangible, and undefined.

The first chapter analyzes works by Woolf, including To the Lighthouse and A Room of One's Own. Starting in the modernist age we see the body coming into question, becoming denaturalized while the institution of the "novel" is renewed through women's contributions to the literary canon. Women’s productivity, and the potential to …

The Role Of Gender And Salient Social Identities In Producing Vulnerability And Maladptation To Flooding In Koraso, Berekum, Ghana, Kingsley Damoah Oppong May 2026

The Role Of Gender And Salient Social Identities In Producing Vulnerability And Maladptation To Flooding In Koraso, Berekum, Ghana, Kingsley Damoah Oppong

Geography ETDs

This paper highlights how social identities like polygamy, illiteracy, and ethnicity hinder rural women farmers in Ghana from adapting to climate change. It advocates for an intersectional approach to address these challenges, moving beyond simplistic gender binaries. Using qualitative interviews (n=49) in a flood-prone village in Berekum, Ghana, the study reveals how these identities intersect with gender roles and colonial legacies, exacerbating vulnerability. It bridges Black feminist thought with climate change, an underexplored area, offering insights into climate change and environmental studies, as well as Black feminist scholarship. This research urges a reevaluation of how we understand climate change in …

A Dynamic Assessment Of Writing Apprehension In Elementary And Middle School Students Undergoing A Writing Intervention, Jennifer Lin Williams May 2026

A Dynamic Assessment Of Writing Apprehension In Elementary And Middle School Students Undergoing A Writing Intervention, Jennifer Lin Williams

Theses - ALL

Writing apprehension refers to fear or anxiety associated with writing tasks, avoidance of writing, and concern over evaluation of written works (Daly & Miller, 1975c). Although extensively studied in college-aged populations, where elevated apprehension is linked to reduced text production (Limpo, 2018) and diminished sentence complexity and quality (Faigley et al., 1981), research in elementary students remains limited. Existing studies have relied on adaptations of the Writing Apprehension Test (Daly & Miller, 1975c), originally validated for adults, and have typically employed cross-sectional designs, leaving the developmental trajectory of writing apprehension underexplored. To address these gaps, the present study examined changes …

Affective Labor And Deservingness In Global Care Economies: A Comparative Film Analysis In Brazilian And U.S. Cinema, Débora Ferreira Leite May 2026

Affective Labor And Deservingness In Global Care Economies: A Comparative Film Analysis In Brazilian And U.S. Cinema, Débora Ferreira Leite

Theses - ALL

This thesis examines how contemporary cinema constructs narratives of migration, care labor, and social mobility through representations of Latina caregivers. Focusing on two films, Knives Out (2019), directed by Rian Johnson, and Diários de Intercâmbio (The Secret Diary of an Exchange Student, 2021), directed by Bruno Garotti, the project explores how cinematic narratives shape cultural understandings of care work, migration, and the American Dream. Although these films emerge from different national industries and genres, both center Latina women navigating transnational labor arrangements and aspirations for social mobility in the United States. Drawing on scholarship on the global care economy, transnational …

Complementation In Guadeloupean Creole: An Experimental And Computational Account, William Joseph Kezerian May 2026

Complementation In Guadeloupean Creole: An Experimental And Computational Account, William Joseph Kezerian

Theses - ALL

This thesis presents an experimental and computational investigation of complementizer variation in Guadeloupean Creole (GC). Despite its morphosyntactic innovations distinct from its lexifier, French, the subordinate structure of GC remains understudied. The project presented here involves a psycholinguistic experiment targeting complementizer usage, using binary choice tasks to gather grammaticality judgments. This was administered during field research in Guadeloupe to 9 youth speakers and 11 adult speakers of GC and French. Ethnographic interview recordings in GC were also collected from adult speakers, which were then transcribed for the purpose of text extraction of key words. I use NLP text-mining methods such …

Simulated Intelligence, Surveillance, And Play, Atienah Cape

Theses - ALL

This MFA thesis explores modern panopticism and the feeling of being watched by creating and installing Four Real Friends, an interactive robotic artwork inspired by the 1998 Furby. The project looks at how surveillance technologies are not just outside forces, but part of daily life, often feeling familiar, playful, and even social. The installation uses hardware design, custom circuits, computer vision, and real-time data display to collect and process how visitors interact in the gallery. Its nostalgic and friendly look encourages people to take part, while still showing how data is collected and displayed as it happens. This makes surveillance …

Background

Genetic testing and genomic sequencing are increasingly part of pediatric care, yet many adolescents and parents lack the knowledge needed to make informed decisions. Prior studies show gaps in understanding, even among highly educated families, raising concerns about the adequacy of consent and assent. Little is known about when youth begin to comprehend genomic sequencing and how this impacts their own genetic and genomic decision-making.

Objective

To assess baseline genomic knowledge among adolescents and parents, examine its influence on decisions about genetic testing and sequencing, and identify opinions on appropriate age thresholds for youth participation in testing decisions.

Methods …

As Seen On Tv: Growing Influence Of Latinidad In The United States, Alex Vazquez May 2026

As Seen On Tv: Growing Influence Of Latinidad In The United States, Alex Vazquez

Dissertations - ALL

“As Seen on TV: Growing Influence of Latinidad in the United States” examines how Latinos increased their political power through television. Examining both English and Spanish language television programming and its business dealings from the 1970s to the 2010s uncovers an unexplored history of Latino activism. Cultural representations of Latinos on television caused Latinos to respond to these depictions through acts of protest, challenging television’s display of Latinidad. In this dissertation, Latinidad serves as a broad term to link Latin Americans living in the United States. It crosses ethnic identities, uniting them through similar elements of culture expression, language, attitudes, …

Dissertations - ALL

This dissertation empirically investigates the impact of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) in China, with a particular focus on Article 24, the right to education. Using a mixed-methods approach, this dissertation addresses two central questions: whether and how Article 24 has influenced Chinese national policies on inclusive education; and whether and how the Chinese law that promotes inclusive education has impacted the lived experiences of students with disabilities in seeking educational accommodations. To examine changes in Chinese national policy, the study employs Critical Discourse Analysis of disability-related education laws and regulations. This analysis …

Avicenna On Non-Rational Voluntary Motion, Hamed Shirmohammadi May 2026

Avicenna On Non-Rational Voluntary Motion, Hamed Shirmohammadi

Dissertations - ALL

This dissertation investigates Avicenna’s theory of non-rational voluntary motion. Avicenna’s most significant innovation in this domain is his theory of the internal senses, and in particular, his account of the estimative faculty (wahm) and its proper objects, the intentions (ma'nā). Intentions are non-sensible features of perceived particulars—such as the hostility of a wolf—that carry evaluative significance for the perceiving animal. This dissertation argues that understanding the nature of intentions is the key to explaining how a non-rational animal can pursue goals through relatively complex courses of action. Avicenna recognizes two ways in which intentions are acquired: through instinct and through …
