Publications and Research
Analysing large population genomic datasets requires an interdisciplinary skillset. Beyond a knowledge base in genetics and population biology, population genomic analyses involve computer science and statistics, representing a barrier for researchers without experience in those fields. PopGenHelpR seeks to lower this barrier by enabling researchers to perform population genomic analyses and generate near-publication quality figures in a streamlined and informed fashion. PopGenHelpR allows users to estimate genetic diversity within populations as well as differentiation among populations and individuals from single nucleotide polymorphism data. PopGenHelpR includes commonly used measures such as observed heterozygosity and FST. PopGenHelpR also provides five …

Coal Geology & Exploration
Background Hidden hazards in coalfield fire zones are characterized by limited detectability, rapid evolution, and multi-hazard coupling, posing major challenges to the safe coal mining and related ecological restoration. Methods This study aims to achieve the fine-scale identification and risk control of hidden hazards in coalfield fire zones. Based on a systematic review of the genetic mechanisms and spatial distribution patterns of coalfield fire zones, this study summarizes the characteristics of three primary fire zone types: outcrop/surface fire zones, shallowly buried fire zones, and deeply buried underground burnt-out areas and fire zones within old coal pits. Multi-dimensional hazards caused by …

No Excuses. All Ownership. Music As Meaning, Business As Longevity, Taylor Atherton-Henry
Student Theses
Music has always been more than a creative outlet for me; it is a reflection of identity, emotion, discipline, and the way I move through the world. Long before it became a profession or an academic pursuit, music functioned as a language through which I could process experience, express love, and make sense of both joy and struggle. As I progressed through this program, it became increasingly clear that my artistic development and professional aspirations were evolving simultaneously. What began as separate goals, creating an album and establishing a music production company, ultimately became inseparable. Each process informed and strengthened …

To Record, To Be Heard, Jiahao Li
Student Theses
Introduction
This capstone project is a pop rock album, including seven original songs written, performed, recorded, and mixed by myself. Four of the songs will be from an old project, for which I had made only demos at home about four years ago. The other three songs were written during the last three years. All songs were recorded in the recording studios at Feirstein. This paper will go through the creation process of this album and explore what songwriting, recording and producing mean to me. I will also talk about the evolution of my practice and my artisthood.

Smaller Right Ventricle Results In Poorer Exercise Performance In Young Patients With Repaired Tetralogy Of Fallot, Christiane Mhanna, Katerina Kourpas, Takeshi Tsuda
Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: Severe right ventricular (RV) dilatation and exercise intolerance are considered indications for pulmonary valve replacement in surgically repaired tetralogy of Fallot (rTOF).
METHODS AND RESULTS: Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) and cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) were performed in rTOF patients with pulmonary insufficiency (PI). Oxygen pulse (OP), calculated as oxygen consumption (V̇O
CONCLUSIONS: A smaller RV was associated with worse exercise performance, indicating exercise intolerance is independent of RV dilatation in young rTOF with PI and represents a unique pathological entity responsible for reduced exercise performance.

Wills Eye Hospital Papers
OBJECTIVE: Proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) remains a major cause of failure after rhegmatogenous retinal detachment repair and lacks effective pharmacologic therapies. Although epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is central to PVR pathogenesis, the structural determinants governing the tractability of EMT regulators, particularly those involving intrinsic disorder, remain poorly defined. We developed a disorder-aware, artificial intelligence-enabled computational framework to evaluate EMT-associated proteins in PVR and prioritize structurally tractable regulators for structure-based targeting.
DESIGN: A computational, hypothesis-generating study employing an in silico screening and structural modeling pipeline.
SUBJECTS: No human subjects or biological specimens were included. The dataset comprised 25 EMT-associated proteins implicated in PVR, …

The Lion's Share: The Secret Land Grab Of Drake's Circumnavigation, Melissa Cole Darby
Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Francis Drake’s journey around the world between 1577 and 1580 is renowned as one of the most famous voyages in history. The circumnavigation was a great achievement for England, but the official story Queen Elizabeth and her Privy Council maintained for nine years was that Drake was a pirate, and that the treasure he captured on the voyage would be returned to Spain. Upon his return, information about the voyage and his route were suppressed and the crew was sworn to secrecy: they were not to reveal where they travelled on ‘pain of death’. Here I present the case that …

The Machine For Its Own Sake: Tolkien's Critique Of Instrumental Reason And The Modern Ecological Ethos, Ahmad J. El-Youssef
The Machine For Its Own Sake: Tolkien's Critique Of Instrumental Reason And The Modern Ecological Ethos, Ahmad J. El-Youssef
Journal of Tolkien Research
This essay examines J.R.R. Tolkien's legendarium as a systematic critique of instrumental reason, positioning his work as a vital philosophical resource for diagnosing and navigating the Anthropocene. Rather than a simplistic anti-technology stance, Tolkien's concept of the "Machine" represents a teleological logic that reduces the living world to a standing reserve, paralleling contemporary ecological crises. Through analysis of key narratives, particularly the industrialisation of Isengard, the corruption of the Shire, and the restoration of Lothlórien, this study demonstrates how Tolkien dramatises the ontological flattening inherent in instrumentalist domination. The essay contrasts this with Tolkien's alternative ethos of sub-creation and stewardship, …

Experimentation, Adaptability, And Ingenuity In The Community Art Studio, Louisa Mary Drab
Expressive Therapies Theses
To examine the question, “How can community art making in an open studio embolden women through creative adaptability, ingenuity, and experimentation?” a mosaic project was conducted over four sessions with women attending an art studio at a day shelter. Current literature illustrates the scope of success open studio has had in promoting community connectivity through the communion of individuality. The expressive therapies continuum, open studio approach, trauma-informed care, and the therapeutic alliance are the pillars that informed this exploration. This community engagement project melded together structural components of mosaic-making with the tenets of open studio, where guiding and sharing are …
Improving Nursing Compliance With Pressure Injury Prevention In Postoperative Patients In The Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit, Chingyi Lam
Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Project Abstract
Pressure injuries acquired in the hospital continue to be a major concern in patient safety among critically ill populations. The purpose of the quality improvement project was to improve nursing compliance with pressure injury prevention strategies among postoperative patients in a cardiovascular intensive care unit (CVICU). Patients who undergo cardiovascular surgery are at a high risk of developing pressure injuries due to immobility, sedation, vasopressors, and prolonged positioning on their backs. The quality improvement project was carried out in a 37-bed CVICU using the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Model for Improvement and Plan–Do–Study–Act (PDSA) cycles. Data on nursing repositioning …

The number of correctly produced words is the primary output variable n most verbal fluency tests. The examination of the number of clusters and cluster size achieves a more in-depth analyses of cognitive aspects and processes. We propose a scoring system for phonemic, semantic, and emotion word fluency tests in the Indonesian context. This study aimed to determine the underlying cognitive constructs of the participants, including the clustering and switching indices, using principal component analysis (PCA). A total of 150 participants were included, and the tests were administered online following a previously validated protocol. The three fluency tests loaded different …

Bridging Images And Language In Radiology: A Comprehensive Prisma Systematic Review Of Transformer Vision-Language Models And Clinical Readiness, Mohammad T. Khasawneh Dr., Sadaf Tabatabaee
Systems Science and Industrial Engineering Student Scholarship
Transformer vision-language models (VLMs) promise end-to-end automation of radiology reporting and related multimodal tasks. However, evidence remains fragmented across datasets, architectures, evaluation practices, and levels of clinical validation, limiting fair comparison and safe translation into practice. Following PRISMA 2020/PRISMA-S, search engines including PubMed, IEEE Xplore, Web of Science, and Google Scholar were systematically searched for peer-reviewed, English-language studies published between 2019 and 2025 that used paired radiology images and free-text reports. Dual reviewers screened records and extracted data using a locked schema covering datasets, modalities, architectures, training objectives, evaluation metrics, and indicators of clinical readiness. Free-text model descriptions were normalized …

Higher predicted brain age difference has been associated with several psychiatric disorders. Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is associated with markers of accelerated aging. In this study, we determined brain predicted age difference (PAD) in individuals with GAD and healthy controls (HC) as well as group differences in PAD variability using voxel-wise structural MRI. The training dataset included 3511 controls, and the testing dataset included 1595 individuals with GAD and 4552 HC from the ENIGMA-Anxiety GAD Working Group. A convolutional neural network model using four input modalities per subject and a model ensemble approach was used to predict brain age. The …

Let Freedom Read: Exploring Mississippi’S Defiance Of National Book Banning Trends, Olivia S. Hoover
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Why have book bans have surged so dramatically across the United States in recent years, especially as they have become a defining political project for conservative lawmakers? At the center of this uptick in book bans lies a confusing puzzle: while book bans overwhelmingly occur in Republican-dominated states, Mississippi, despite its conservative political landscape, has seen almost none, even as states like Florida have enacted more than a thousand in a single year. Much of the existing scholarship on book bans focuses on national patterns of them or on the lawmakers and advocacy groups driving these bans, leaving a gap …

Strategic communication often relies on anchors observed by the sender but not by the receiver. An analyst may report against a proprietary valuation model, an auditor against an internal score, a manager against an accounting estimate, or an institution against its own standard. I study a sender-receiver game in which reports are costly to move away from such privately observed anchors. Anchor heterogeneity changes the geometry of communication. Rather than relying on partitions, privately anchored reporting generates continuous variation in messages because different senders find different reports costly to make. This mechanism can improve information transmission, but it can also …

INTRODUCTION: Cannabis use is proliferating among oncological populations. However, research is limited on whether cannabis routes and sources are associated with neighborhood disadvantage and whether it moderates the relationship between neighborhood disadvantage and patient-reported outcomes (PROs). This analysis evaluates the relationship between neighborhood disadvantage and cannabis source and route, and their association with PROs.
METHODS: Analyses included 106 patients with cancer from varying levels of neighborhood disadvantage. Logistic regressions tested the association of neighborhood disadvantage with cannabis source (i.e., regulated vs. unregulated) and route (i.e., inhaled vs. consumed/other formulations). Multilevel regressions tested the association of neighborhood disadvantage with PROs (e.g., …
