Platner Leads Collins In Maine Senate Race 5/27/2026, Unh Survey Center
All UNH Survey Center Polls
With the Maine primary only two weeks away, Graham Platner holds a dominant lead in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate following the withdrawal of Governor Janet Mills. Platner leads incumbent Republican Susan Collins in a general election matchup. Troy Jackson and Nirav Shah are tied in the race for the Democratic nomination for governor. On the Republican side, Robert Charles leads the field, followed by Jonathan Bush. No clear frontrunner has emerged in the race for the Democratic nomination for U.S. House in Maine's Second Congressional District, while most likely Republican voters are undecided on a GOP nominee for …

Importance: Climate change may reverse decades of improvements in cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality in the US; however, comprehensive regional projections of heat-related CVD burden in the US are unavailable. Objective: To use the county-level observed (2010-2016) heat-related CVD burden in the US to obtain the projected rates through 2050 according to the mean (shared socioeconomic pathway [SSP] 2-4.5) and high (SSP5-8.5) greenhouse gas (GHG) emission pathways. Design, Setting, and Participants: This cross-sectional ecological analysis used county-level summary data including all counties in the contiguous US from 2010 through 2016 as baseline data with projections to 2030 and 2050 under SSP …
Direct Democracy In The Twenty-First Century: Massachusetts Open Town Meeting And Citizen Participation, Daniel W. Santos
Direct Democracy In The Twenty-First Century: Massachusetts Open Town Meeting And Citizen Participation, Daniel W. Santos
Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
Town Meeting is a unique system of democratic governance that can be found only in New England towns, where it has been the primary form of local government for nearly four centuries. Town Meeting is a type of direct democracy where laws, policy, and decisions are made by a plurality of a town’s eligible voters acting as its legislative body. There is limited scholarship addressing Town Meeting, with much of the extant literature focusing on the benefits of the direct democracy aspect of this form of government. Town Meeting has been generally known to be poorly attended by citizens. The …

Global Inventory And Audit Of Road Injury Data Systems: A Descriptive Study Using The Road Injury Chain Of Survival Framework, Tim Nutbeam, Emily Foote, Lauren R. Rodgers, Rob Fenwick, Willem Stassen
Peninsula Medical School
BackgroundRoad injury causes an estimated 1.19 million deaths annually and tens of millions of non-fatal injuries worldwide. Despite this burden, post-collision data remain fragmented across police, transport, and health sectors, impeding system-level improvement. The recently proposed Road Injury Chain of Survival framework provides a structure for mapping data needs across five sequential links: Early Recognition, Early Rescue, Early Initial Care, Early Transport, and Early Hospital Care & Rehabilitation. This study aims to identify and describe national and major regional road injury datasets worldwide and to assess their coverage against a novel RICS-derived sub-indicator framework.MethodsA structured, descriptive global audit was undertaken …

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers
Mitochondria–endoplasmic reticulum (ER) contact sites (MERCS) are nanoscopic, dynamic platforms integrating metabolism, signaling, and stress responses to regulate cell fate. These nanoscopic interfaces remodel continuously to meet the demands of proliferating, quiescent, and senescent cells. We synthesize evidence that MERCS actively coordinate local Ca2+ signaling, non-vesicular lipid transfer, and proteostasis to shape mitochondrial function and cellular homeostasis. We discuss how MERCS architecture changes across the cell cycle and during arrest, distinguishing adaptive from maladaptive remodeling, and consider therapeutic potential in aging and age-related disease.

Improving medication adherence in adolescents who had a liver transplant (iMALT), a prospective, block-randomized, single-blind, controlled multisite study in 13 pediatric transplant centers, used the medication level variability index (MLVI) to identify nonadherent adolescents. It compared a 2-year remote behavioral telemetric intervention (TI) that focused on adherence and addressed barriers to standard of care (SOC). The primary endpoint was the composite incidence of centrally determined (3 masked pathologists) rejection, death, retransplantation, or consent withdrawal. In 148 participants (TI group, n = 72 and the SOC group, n = 76), with a mean age 15.5 years, there were twice as many …

OBJECTIVES: Accurate identification of acute stroke by the Emergency Medical Dispatch Centre (EMDC) is essential for timely treatment and efficient resource use. However, stroke mimics-conditions resembling stroke can often lead to overtriage, complicating emergency care. We aimed to quantify EMDC stroke overtriage and compare characteristics of stroke mimics with confirmed stroke cases.
DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study.
SETTING: Patients with suspected stroke identified by the EMDC in Western Norway between 1 January 2021 and 31 December 2022.
PARTICIPANTS: A total of 8,261 patients with EMDC suspected stroke were included. Stroke suspicion was determined using the Norwegian Medical Priority Dispatch System, which …
Feast And Famine: Food, Crisis, And Hope In The Grimm Brothers’ Kinder– Und Hausmärchen, Rebecca Zani
Feast And Famine: Food, Crisis, And Hope In The Grimm Brothers’ Kinder– Und Hausmärchen, Rebecca Zani
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
This paper examines how the Grimm Brothers’ Kinder- und Hausmärchen (final edition, 1857) encode hunger as a structuring condition of both narrative and social order. Furthermore, it explores how these tales articulate the fragile and often unstable nature of abundance, from the perspective of food studies. Drawing on a corpus-based approach, the study highlights the predominance of a restricted alimentary lexicon centered on staple foods (such as bread, wine, beer, milk, and porridge) reflecting a subsistence economy rather than a state of plenitude. By situating these narrative patterns within the longue durée of recurring food crises in preindustrial Germany, the …
Does Modernisation Of Traditional Dishes Lead To Their Destruction? The Case Of Baklava, Banu Özden
Does Modernisation Of Traditional Dishes Lead To Their Destruction? The Case Of Baklava, Banu Özden
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
The modernisation of traditional dishes presents a tension between culinary creativity and the preservation of cultural heritage. Using baklava as a single case study, this paper investigates whether such modernisation leads to the destruction of traditional foodways. Drawing on a qualitative study with seven Turkish chefs, the research finds that innovation does not inherently threaten baklava’s identity. Instead, preservation depends on maintaining the dish’s essential technique—multiple layers of paper-thin pastry—while allowing flexibility in presentation and narrative framing. Participants agreed that baklava’s strong cultural foundation renders it resilient against fusion experiments and deconstructed forms, provided its core qualities remain intact. However, …

When Guide Michelin Came (Back) To Town: Christopher Driver, The Good Food Guide, And The Crisis Over British Food Heritage, 1970-1979, Andrea Broomfield
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
This paper focuses on the status of the Good Food Guide in Britain during a small wave of revived interest among chefs in British regional food in the 1970s, especially under the editorship of Christopher Driver and during a decade when Michelin’s return to Britain and Ireland threatened not only Britain’s recovering sense of its culinary heritage, but also the legitimacy of the Good Food Guide itself. It considers the tiny overlap of restaurants that appeared in both the English Tourist Board’s Taste of England 1978 and the Good Food Guide 1979, and argues that because the Good Food Guide …

A Sisyphean Carrot In Waiting For Godot, Thierry Dubost
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
In Waiting for Godot, Beckett employs a variety of strategies to expose what it means to be human. Among them, one notes a recurring emphasis on eating scenes that reflect a lurking existential crisis illustrated by the characters’ failure to follow expected standards of commensality. In this respect, if one refers to Brillat-Savarin’s maxim “Tell me what kind of food you eat and I will tell you what kind of man you are,” one could start from physiological features that are given pride of place in the play to ponder over the importance of unexpected forms of nourishment as revealing …
Objects Of Wartime Resistance And Food Scarcity, Nathalie Cooke
Objects Of Wartime Resistance And Food Scarcity, Nathalie Cooke
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
This paper considers closely three missives crafted by individuals suffering life- threatening duress during wartime incarceration, one during World War One, and two during the Second World War. Only one of these three survived beyond wartime. All three examples involve food: messages embroidered on or about the sourcing of daily bread or describing dishes that were available only in memory. Nevertheless, the very act of crafting objects to carry communications beyond the dire circumstances in which these prisoners of war found themselves embodied hope and defiance. While acknowledging and describing the very different contexts of each of these examples, I …

Crisis, Hope And The Headline: Agenda Setting In England’S Covid Food Story, Dayna Brackley
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
Panic buying during Covid was a crisis of perception as much as supply. This paper builds on the mixed method content analysis of 209 articles and accompanying images from six high circulation English newspapers, March to July 2020, setting it in the context of calls for civil food resilience and the UK national food strategy. The research shows how the press framed food access, responsibility and risk at a pivotal turning point. Sensationalised language appeared in 89% of articles, 68% carried negative sentiment, and 64% of analysed images showed empty shelves. Supermarkets were the dominant voice, quoted in 62% of …

Narrative Construction In Post-Conflict Society: How Narratives Can Shape Conflict Perpetuation And Reconciliation Possibilities In Syria., Abigail H. Eid
Capstone Collection
In December 2024, Syria’s long-standing Assad regime was overthrown, and the country entered a new era of post-conflict reconstruction. This study explores the narratives Syrians in the diaspora are constructing about this regime change and the new era for Syrian society. To do so, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 16 Syrians in the diaspora of various backgrounds and analyzed using an inductive narrative analysis to see which themes emerged. The findings were further organized to understand how these narratives may contribute to perpetuating conflict or promoting peacebuilding and reconciliation. Based on the analysis, there are four main types of narratives …

Layers Of Representation: A Multidimensional Book Analysis, Mariah Pfundheller, Nikki Logan, Amy E. Lein, Sydney Bueno
Kentucky Teacher Education Journal: The Journal of the Teacher Education Division of the Kentucky Council for Exceptional Children
This study evaluates how educators interpret the Multidimensional Framework for Inclusive Literature (MDFIL), a tool for evaluating and selecting multicultural literature for their classrooms. Participants self-identified as current, former/retired, or student teachers, or as undergraduates pursuing a teaching license at the time of the survey. Incorporating multicultural literature into educational settings has a positive impact on children's development. Multicultural literature fosters feelings of acceptance, cultural awareness, and empathy among students. By exposing children to diverse cultural perspectives, multicultural literature not only enhances their understanding of their own identities but also cultivates a greater appreciation of others' experiences. The benefits of …

“The Last Fish”: Environmental Collapse And Food Crisis In Pink Slime (2024) By Fernanda Trías, Pepa Lago
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
At the end of Pink Slime (2024) by Uruguayan writer Fernanda Trías, the unnamed narrator/protagonist eats tuna from a can and drops the empty container in the river, where it “floated for a moment until the water found its way in and dragged it to the bottom.” This scene mirrors the opening of the novel, when a fisherman releases back into the water a fish “so slight that it made no noise as it broke the surface. The last fish.” The presence of the fish, first as a live being and then as a preserved, shelf-stable foodstuff, frame the dystopian …

Wading In The Waters: The Public’S Use Rights In Non-Navigable Streams, Loren Vigil

In New Mexico, the water law of prior appropriation rules. As a result, no individual holds a complete right to ownership of water in New Mexico. Instead, New Mexico landowners hold only a right to put appropriated waters to beneficial use. Appropriation of waters requires diversion, a distinct feature that prevents landowners from claiming natural watercourses flowing through their property boundaries. The unappropriated waters of the state are then vested in the state via public trust, to be used and enjoyed by the public. This public right to use often abuts landowner property rights, as water flows over and through …
Theorizing Rural Cosmopolitanism: Modern Economic History, Urban Elites, And The Political Economy Of Disaster Recovery, Manuel Montoya
Theorizing Rural Cosmopolitanism: Modern Economic History, Urban Elites, And The Political Economy Of Disaster Recovery, Manuel Montoya
Natural Resources Journal
A heavily understated dimension of cosmopolitanism is the urban rural divide. This is particularly true in the context of modern economics, which emerged at the same time that the notion of cosmopolitanism was gaining renewed political significance. This paper examines how economic thought of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries directly influenced the socio-literary interactions of a “World Republic of Letters” and how writers such as Goethe used terms like “universal spiritual commerce” to valorize the role of the city in the making of a new modern world. The paper also describes how the rural was left behind in …

Adapting The Hermit’S Peak/Calf Canyon Fire Assistance Act To Address The Needs Of The Community It Was Meant To Serve, Kieran Raney
Natural Resources Journal
In 2022, New Mexico experienced its worst documented wildfire season on record, and the Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon Fire was the largest among them. Over 340,000 acres of Northern New Mexico burned, devastating a multi-generational, subsistence community. In response, Congress passed the Hermit’s Peak Fire Assistance Act, the second-ever act of its kind to provide full and expeditious compensation for wildfire damage. Yet, more than four years later, many community members still have not received any funding and litigation continues over whether the Act is meant to provide noneconomic damages. This Comment outlines the steps of the rulemaking process to argue …

Trial By Fire: Disaster Justice And Lessons Learned, Clifford J. Villa
Natural Resources Journal
Disaster Justice reflects the intersection of environmental justice and disaster law. The study of disaster justice is becoming increasingly essential as disasters become more frequent and devastating in the face of accelerating climate change. Disaster law is marked by statutes such as the federal Stafford Act and by theory such as the “disaster cycle” of readiness, response, and recovery. Environmental justice recognizes that the distribution of harms such as bad air or water quality may be distributed inequitably among groups such as low-income populations or racial minorities. In similar fashion, the adverse impacts of disasters may also be distributed inequitably …

Wars, Hurricanes, And Volcanoes: Community Cookbooks And The Politics Of Disaster Relief, Maria Paz Moreno
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
The community charitable cookbook originated in the United States after the Civil War. Since then, this model of fundraising has become popular both in the United States and around the world, often adapted to suit different purposes. Although community charitable cookbooks are traditionally put together to benefit various social causes, they sometimes go beyond the purely charitable to serve other goals, like preserving cultural traditions, promoting social change, or sustaining collective identity within diasporic communities. My paper focuses on community cookbooks created with the goal of fundraising for disaster relief. I will examine not only their charitable motivations, but also …

On the night of 03 August 2024, Adam Kelwick, the imam from the Abdullah Quillian Society Mosque in Liverpool crossed police lines and presented anti-immigration protesters with burgers and chips prepared in the mosque kitchen. This took place in the aftermath of the Southport stabbings and the worst outbreak of civil disorder in Britain for more than a decade. “We decided to deal with those people who came to protest against us in a way which we hoped could open up hearts and minds. We wanted to cook food for them.” This paper will examine the power of food to …
Oxo Made With Milk: The Trials Of The Colonial Housewife, Igor Cusack
Oxo Made With Milk: The Trials Of The Colonial Housewife, Igor Cusack
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
Colonisation may be seen as an essentially male process, imposing Western notions of household organization and gender on native women and on the colonial housewife. This is all part of the ideology of domesticity which permeated British colonial societies from the late nineteenth century until the independence of African states in the mid twentieth century. In this paper I will examine how food was used to combat various medical crises in British colonial Africa. The paper considers cookery books from South Africa, Rhodesia, Bechuanaland, Kenya, Nyasaland, Ghana and West Africa, focussing on sections entitled “for the invalid,” “invalid dishes” or …
Hospitality In Crisis: Deciphering Food Insecurity Among Migrants From A Derridean Perspective, Alexandra Constantinescu, Naz Ali
Hospitality In Crisis: Deciphering Food Insecurity Among Migrants From A Derridean Perspective, Alexandra Constantinescu, Naz Ali
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
Food insecurity faced by disadvantaged groups of migrants (i.e., voluntary migrants living in low-income households and forced migrants – namely asylum seekers) undermines the nature of hospitality, creating conditions of inhospitableness associated with hunger, injustice, insecurity, and poverty. This study presents a critical interpretation of hospitality in crisis by concentrating on food insecurity resulting from government and non-government food policies in England, that are inhospitable towards forced migrants – contributing to an area of enquiry with limited research in food and hospitality studies. The study draws on the teachings of Jacques Derrida, particularly his philosophical perspective on (in)hospitality/hostipitality, with conceptualisations …

Food In Dinneen’S Foclóir Gaedhilge Agus Béarla, John D. Mulcahy
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
Inspired by the work of the late Manchán Magan, this paper examines Irish food and hospitality through the lens of historical lexicography using the 1927 edition of Fr Patrick Dinneen’s Foclóir Gaedhilge agus Béarla as a linguistic “time capsule”. By examining Irish words connected with everyday eating, the paper traces how these words embody resilience, reciprocity, and hope in the face of recurring crises such as famine, emigration, and political upheaval. The paper also draws attention to roles associated with food provision and banqueting, underlining the long-standing importance of hospitality in Irish society. This approach uncovers how hospitality was understood …

Appealing Temporary Restraining Orders, Tyler B. Lindley, Morgan Bronson, Wesley White
Florida Law Review
Temporary restraining orders (TROs) are a powerful injunctive tool for district courts to maintain control over a case by directly controlling the parties’ out-of-court conduct, especially when both the facts on the ground and the litigation are moving at breakneck speed. In response to the wave of TROs against the Trump Administration, appellate courts have struggled with the power of these orders and the long-standing rule that parties cannot appeal from TROs. But that rule is not found anywhere in the relevant statute, which authorizes interlocutory appeals from any order concerning an injunction. To the contrary, an examination of the …
