Hidden In Plain Sight: The Role Of Belonging In Shaping Pre-Service Teachers’ Motivations & Practices In A Paraprofessional-To-Teacher Pathway, Julie Sidarous Dr., Douglas Van Dyke Dr.
i.e.: inquiry in education
As school districts face persistent teacher shortages, paraprofessionals and school staff remain an untapped resource with immense potential. The purpose of this study was to explore the distinct benefits that school employees bring to the teaching profession when transitioning into roles as teachers of record. To deeply understand candidates' stories, this qualitative study employed Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) to examine how preservice teacher candidates make sense of their own lived experiences. The findings reveal five key advantages these transitioning educators provide: deep community connections, practical institutional knowledge, resilience in high-need schools, expertise supporting non-traditional learners, and a profound desire to …
Belonging As The Bedrock Of Learning, Gloria Mcdaniel-Hall, Nina Weisling
Belonging As The Bedrock Of Learning, Gloria Mcdaniel-Hall, Nina Weisling
i.e.: inquiry in education
The reasons why we teach are intensely personal. We give our hearts and souls to “the work,” though it is so much more than work to us. It is a calling, felt deep in our souls, to correct wrongs, to bend the “arc of the moral universe” all the way to justice, to realize the dreams that have been deferred at best and stamped out and denied at worst. Because at the core of each day, we find humans, students, families, and colleagues who are inherently worthy of learning, loving, and living a fulfilling life. Yet, for far too many …
Teachers’ Action Research Knowledge: From Knowing To Doing, Firdissa J. Aga Dr.
Teachers’ Action Research Knowledge: From Knowing To Doing, Firdissa J. Aga Dr.
i.e.: inquiry in education
This quantitative study investigated the action research (AR) knowledge of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instructors at three Ethiopian public universities. Data collected via questionnaire from 57 instructors revealed that EFL instructors had respectively high and medium theoretical and practical knowledge of AR. Their theoretical knowledge and practical skills demonstrated a significant positive correlation (r = 0.43, p < 0.01). Furthermore, instructors’ preferences showed strong alignment with reflective rationality (context-specific, practitioner-led inquiry) over technical rationality (externally imposed, top-down approaches). While reported levels of reflection-on-action and reflection-in-action were high, tacit knowing-in-action-the deep, personal, often unarticulated professional knowledge-was notably low. This gap suggests that instructors’ AR understanding remains largely externalized, not yet internalized as embodied, intuitive practice. The findings suggest that empowering instructors to convert their tacit knowledge into explicit understanding through sustained, hands-on AR engagement is critical for authentic professional development and transformative classroom practice.
Applying The Framework Of Activity Theory As An Ongoing Complementary Planning And Evaluation Tool For Esl/Bilingual Programs. How To (Meet) And Go Beyond Compliance, Margaret Bouchard, Jason Stegemoller
Applying The Framework Of Activity Theory As An Ongoing Complementary Planning And Evaluation Tool For Esl/Bilingual Programs. How To (Meet) And Go Beyond Compliance, Margaret Bouchard, Jason Stegemoller
i.e.: inquiry in education
In this conceptual article, the authors explore the use of Activity Theory as a tool to build a framework for designing, modifying, or evaluating ESL/Multilingual Programs. Demographics of immigrant and emerging multilingual students within educational systems are continually evolving. Educational systems with emerging multilingual students are particularly vulnerable to this phenomenon and must meet changing needs that are often driven by outside influences. These changes might include: increases in immigration from varying student ethnicities, societal/political trends, socio-economic level of a community, legal regulations, and advanced educational research. Designing and evaluating educational programs within a system of change can be a …
Living With Ai Within The Context Of Higher Education, Terry Jo Smith
Living With Ai Within The Context Of Higher Education, Terry Jo Smith
i.e.: inquiry in education
This autoethnographic study examines how generative AI has entered higher education, reshaping teachers’ and students’ inner lives, relational practices, and institutional ecologies. Drawing on the author’s embodied experiences within the higher education landscape, the analysis consists of plugging in theory, research, policy, and current events as a means to connect individual experience with broader concepts, events, and structures (Jackson & Mazzei, 2022). The paper maps affective responses such as awe and anxiety, pedagogical tensions such as assessment, transparency, and trust, and political-economic drivers such as capitalism and policy. The study foregrounds methodological reflexivity, arguing that critical autoethnography can surface situated …

Exploring Ai In Higher Education: Reflections On Research-Informed Practices For Teaching And Learning, Angela Elkordy, Stuart I. Carrier, Jack Denny, Donna Wakefield, Ayn F. Keneman
i.e.: inquiry in education
This article examines how faculty at a college of education are integrating generative AI tools into graduate and doctoral educator preparation programs. Drawing on faculty inquiry and course-based observations across multiple contexts — including early childhood education, secondary education, special education, and doctoral programs in education — the article synthesizes emerging lessons and practices of AI literacy development, pedagogical approaches, and instructional design. We present an evidence-informed, reflective account of faculty practice through the lens of the scholarship of teaching, exploring how educators are navigating AI content, literacy, and practices in real courses, what students are learning, and what instructional …
Ai-Powered Remixes: Using Generative Ai To Critically Examine Text, Genre, And Language In First Year College Writing, Lauren Anderson, Eric Vandemark
Ai-Powered Remixes: Using Generative Ai To Critically Examine Text, Genre, And Language In First Year College Writing, Lauren Anderson, Eric Vandemark
i.e.: inquiry in education
As generative AI tools become embedded in writing instruction, educators face urgent questions about how these technologies encode and reinforce language standardization — particularly for multilingual and multidialectal students. This practitioner reflection describes a series of AI-powered "remix" activities developed and refined in corequisite writing labs. Building on a prior action research study, this paper turns to the pedagogical questions that emerged after the study: how AI tools might be used not as writing shortcuts but as objects of critical inquiry. Drawing on frameworks including critical literacy, plurilingualism, culturally relevant pedagogy, and AI literacy, we describe four remix activity types …
Scaffolded Generative Ai In Instructional Planning: Supporting Teacher Candidates’ Culturally Responsive Teaching, Dr. Eun Kyung Ko, Xiaoning Chen, Vishodana Thamotharan, Julie Sidarous
Scaffolded Generative Ai In Instructional Planning: Supporting Teacher Candidates’ Culturally Responsive Teaching, Dr. Eun Kyung Ko, Xiaoning Chen, Vishodana Thamotharan, Julie Sidarous
i.e.: inquiry in education
As generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) becomes increasingly embedded in instructional planning, teacher education programs must move beyond efficiency-oriented adoption toward equity-centered, pedagogically grounded integration. This mixed-methods longitudinal study examines a year-long, scaffolded approach to integrating GenAI within an early childhood teacher residency program, with a specific focus on culturally responsive teaching (CRT) instructional planning. Guided by the AI/I-TPACK and CRT frameworks, fourteen bilingual teacher candidates (TCs) participated in this study. Data sources included pre- and post-surveys of CRT self-efficacy, lesson plans and instructional artifacts, reflective coursework, and focus group interviews. Quantitative analyses revealed statistically significant gains in TCs’ CRT self-efficacy …
When The Output Looks Like Learning: Tertiary Algorithmicity, Unproductive Success, And The Case For Pedagogical Friction In K–12 Schools, Micah J. Miner
When The Output Looks Like Learning: Tertiary Algorithmicity, Unproductive Success, And The Case For Pedagogical Friction In K–12 Schools, Micah J. Miner
i.e.: inquiry in education
The rapid adoption of generative artificial intelligence in K–12 schools has outpaced educators' capacity to evaluate its effects on learning. This conceptual article argues that the dominant institutional responses treating AI as either an integrity threat or a productivity tool share an unexamined assumption that the fundamental nature of learning remains unchanged. Drawing on Walter Ong's media ecology and extending it through the concept of tertiary algorithmicity, the article offers a theoretical framework for understanding generative AI as a qualitative shift in the symbolic environment of schooling. For the first time, the prevailing communication technology ctively generates symbolic content, enabling …
Making Ai An Intelligent Tool For Our Schools: Using The Perceptions Of Administrators And Teachers In A Midwestern School District To Help Shape Our Educator Preparation Program, John A. Huss
i.e.: inquiry in education
This qualitative practitioner research study explored the attitudes and perceptions of administrators and teachers in a high-performing Midwestern school district regarding the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in K-12 education. While AI has rapidly emerged as a transformative force in society, its implementation in schools remains inconsistent, with limited policies, training, and usage. Semi-structured interviews with nine educators (three principals and six experienced teachers) revealed widespread interest in AI, but also significant uncertainty and uneven adoption. Educators reported using AI for administrative and instructional tasks, such as grading and resource generation, yet expressed concern over student overreliance and diminished critical …

Book Review: Hicks, T., & Turner, K. H. (2025). Teaching Writing In The Age Of Ai: Strategies For Teachers Of Secondary Students. Solution Tree., Benjamin N. Lathrop
i.e.: inquiry in education
Teaching Writing in the Age of AI: Strategies for Teachers of Secondary Students (Hicks & Turner, 2025) is written for an audience of secondary teachers and teacher educators, but any instructor who teaches or assigns writing will benefit from its insights. While the book's overall stance toward generative AI might be overly optimistic, it effectively addresses key concerns many instructors have about writing with AI, encouraging a critical stance and presenting some out-of-the-box ideas for writing instructive who want to be proactive about AI use in their courses.

Originalisms' Indifferences?: Friendly Amendments To Professor Girgis's "Originalism's Difference?", Jed Handelsman Shugerman
Originalisms' Indifferences?: Friendly Amendments To Professor Girgis's "Originalism's Difference?", Jed Handelsman Shugerman
Florida Law Review
In this Essay, the author begins by summarizing their many areas of agreement with Girgis’s Dunwody Lecture, Originalism’s Difference?. Then they turn to each of Girgis’s three differences to ask a question and perhaps pose a critique. Has Girgis placed too much emphasis on “constraint”? Is “intensity” a virtue without sufficient care, balance, and open-mindedness, and perhaps a vice if it is a tendentiously intense control-f search? Is avoiding “palpable” moral reasoning a virtue if the Court is using historical evidence to cover for ideological motives and cognitive biases? This Essay turns to some of Girgis’s own examples of …

This Article is a Dunwody Distinguished Lecture in Law and the topic is whether originalism makes any practical difference to constitutional reasoning and outcomes, relative to other methods of interpretation.
Does Good Originalism Need Good History?, Gary Lawson
Does Good Originalism Need Good History?, Gary Lawson
Florida Law Review
One might think that originalism by definition is largely about history. After all, what does it mean to be “originalist” if not to be concerned primarily, if not exclusively, about the past? And if history is relevant, surely good history is better than bad history?
That seemingly obvious conclusion is not actually obvious. The role of good history, as with the role of any discipline—be it linguistics, epistemology, economics, classical studies, or political theory—depends on what questions one asks. And at least some forms of originalism ask questions for which the role of good history, as historians might define good …
Congressional Guesswork And The Separation Of Powers, Isaac Park
Congressional Guesswork And The Separation Of Powers, Isaac Park
Florida Law Review
Before City of Boerne v. Flores, the Supreme Court construed Section Five of the Fourteenth Amendment as an expansive grant of authority, affording Congress broad power to enact legislation enforcing its own interpretations of the Constitution. Under this regime, Congress enacted landmark civil rights statutes such as the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Violence Against Women Act. In 1997, however, City of Boerne v. Flores sharply curtailed Congress’s power under Section Five—announcing (for the first time) that legislation contravening the Court’s prior pronouncements on the meaning of the Fourteenth Amendment impermissibly intruded on the Supreme Court’s role as …
Tribal Civil Procedure: An Unexplored Path To Sovereignty And Economic Development, Adam Crepelle
Tribal Civil Procedure: An Unexplored Path To Sovereignty And Economic Development, Adam Crepelle
Florida Law Review
This Article argues civil procedure reform is a means of strengthening tribal sovereignty and economies. Although tribal civil procedure codes are largely consistent with their state and federal counterparts, tribal rules of procedure can be difficult to locate. The inability to locate tribal rules of procedure has led the Supreme Court to diminish tribal jurisdiction over non-Indians. Similarly, uncertainty about the rules governing tribal court operation deter businesses from investing in Indian country. By making greater efforts to publish tribal procedure rules and the jurisprudence interpreting them, tribes can enhance their sovereignty and their economies.
Tribes should also consider civil …

Rethinking Pre-Service Teachers’ Agency In Ai-Supported Lesson Design Through A Posthuman Synthesis Of Three Empirical Studies In Teacher Education, Wen Wen, Huijing Wen
Rethinking Pre-Service Teachers’ Agency In Ai-Supported Lesson Design Through A Posthuman Synthesis Of Three Empirical Studies In Teacher Education, Wen Wen, Huijing Wen
Excelsior: Leadership in Teaching and Learning
Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is increasingly used in lesson planning in teacher education. There has been a growing interest in exploring the different practices of teachers using GenAI to support lesson planning. This conceptual paper, using posthumanism as a framework, synthesizes three empirical studies to conceptualize pre-service teachers’ agency in AI-supported lesson design on literacy instruction. Pre-service teachers’ agency emerges from the interaction with GenAI, as well as with other human and non-human resources. Although their agency is shared and distributed during the design process, it remains essential for pre-service teachers to actively exercise their agency and make informed judgments …
Climate Change And The Upending Of Food Heritage: Fugu In Japan, Voltaire Cang
Climate Change And The Upending Of Food Heritage: Fugu In Japan, Voltaire Cang
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
Japan is a country with hundreds of food products and traditions tied to regional pride and identity. However, rising temperatures and extreme weather patterns attributed to climate change have caused unstable, decreasing, and lower-quality yields of many foods in regions where these have traditionally thrived or been sourced, thereby threatening the continuity and very existence of regional heritage foods and related traditions and, thus, identity. This paper employs the case of fugu (pufferfish), the highly poisonous seafood delicacy from Shimonoseki (Yamaguchi Prefecture), to illustrate the ways climate change is upending food heritage in Japan. Until 30 years ago, the seas …

Bonding Through Boucherie: Strengthening Social Ties Through Butchery, Evelyn Lambeth
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
“La boucherie de quartier” is a Cajun phrase referring to a neighbourhood pig slaughter. One such annual event, the Lâche Pas Boucherie in southern Louisiana, brings multiple generations and many traditions together with the goal of sharing and celebrating music, food and culture. Boudin, crackling, andouille sausage, and hogshead cheese are but a few of the unique offerings from this melting pot of shared flavours. I was born and raised in southern Louisiana but rarely appreciated the novelty of Cajun cuisine until I moved to Australia. The flavours and spices of my former home add a certain piquancy that is …
Daily Bread And Divine Providence: Scarcity Sermons In England, 1795–1817, Natalia Giza
Daily Bread And Divine Providence: Scarcity Sermons In England, 1795–1817, Natalia Giza
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
This paper examines the role of printed fast-day sermons in England during the subsistence crises of 1795–1817, arguing that the pulpit functioned as a key interpretive space for understanding food scarcity. Delivered during nationally proclaimed fasts and widely circulated in print, these sermons framed dearth not only as a social problem but as a moral and providential crisis. Preachers such as William Vincent, Samuel Horsley, Thomas Rennell, and Edward Pearson employed a shared theological language of divine chastisement, repentance, and providence, presenting hunger as a consequence of national sin while reinforcing social order and discouraging unrest. At the same time, …

Borsch Is Ukrainian: Food And Cultural Resistance In Ukraine, Todd Armstrong
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
The 2022 invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation under Putin marks a pivotal moment in the cultural history of Eastern Europe. Russian aggression is driven in part by the longstanding Russian imperial project to subsume Ukrainian culture as part of the Russian grand narrative of civilizational unity. This ambition is made explicit in Putin’s 2021 speech “On the Historical Unity of Russians and Ukrainians,” where he asserts that “Russians and Ukrainians [are] one people – a single whole.” Ukraine’s rejection of this Russian colonizing and anti-European narrative, however, has been clear and unambiguous, as demonstrated in the now more …
Teaching The Whole Child Through Living History: Experiential Learning In The History Classroom, Robert E. Capps Jr.
Teaching The Whole Child Through Living History: Experiential Learning In The History Classroom, Robert E. Capps Jr.
Teaching Social Studies in the Peach State
This article examines the role of experiential learning in teaching the whole child within the history classroom. Drawing on the educational philosophy of Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi, the article argues that meaningful historical understanding develops when students engage intellectually, emotionally, and actively with the past. Using a Washington Crossing the Delaware living history lab as a classroom example, the article illustrates how experiential learning encourages historical thinking, empathy, and student engagement across diverse learners, including English Language Learners. The article concludes by offering practical implications for educators looking to incorporate living history experiences that move students beyond memorization toward a deeper …
