This research examines the impact of financially assisted homeownership for Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity home recipients as measured in life satisfaction. We develop and assess a model with homeownership as the independent variable and financial well-being, current health, and psychological well-being as mediating variables that impact life satisfaction. We utilize data from 184 Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity homeowners and applicants to test the model. The findings show that homeownership through Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity is related to life satisfaction. That relationship is partially mediated by financial well-being, current health, and psychological well-being, where the mediating variables amplify …
Effects Of Microplastic Biofilms On An Anthropogenically Impacted Suburban Lake, Paris M. Velasquez
Effects Of Microplastic Biofilms On An Anthropogenically Impacted Suburban Lake, Paris M. Velasquez
Masters Theses
Plastics have been observed in every location on the planet, and their prevalence in the environment is due in part to their strong resistance to degradation. Inland lakes are susceptible to plastic pollution by highway runoff, which contains plastic fragments of brake pads, car tires, litter, and road paint. These plastics eventually enter freshwater environments and degrade into microplastics (

Examining Daily-Self Weighing As A Stand-Alone Intervention For Obesity Management, Ashley Parish
Examining Daily-Self Weighing As A Stand-Alone Intervention For Obesity Management, Ashley Parish
All ETDs from UAB
Obesity is an epidemic that has substantial implications for both individuals with the disease as well as the healthcare system in the United States. Individuals with obesity are at increased risk for developing associated co-morbid conditions such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and some forms of cancer, which can affect quality of life and lead to mortality. There are many health behavior interventions which target weight loss, maintenance of weight loss, or weight gain prevention in those with obesity; however, interventions have unique barriers that can vary based on personal, environmental, and social factors. Primary care (PC) settings, which …

The chromatin-remodeling enzyme helicase lymphoid-specific (HELLS) interacts with cell division cycle-associated 7 (CDCA7) on nucleosomes and is involved in the regulation of DNA methylation in higher organisms. Mutations in these genes cause immunodeficiency, centromeric instability, and facial anomalies (ICF) syndrome, which also results in DNA hypomethylation of satellite repeat regions. We investigated the functional domains of human CDCA7 in HELLS using several mutant CDCA7 proteins. The central region is critical for binding to HELLS, activation of ATPase, and nucleosome sliding activities of HELLS-CDCA7. The N-terminal region tends to inhibit ATPase activity. The C-terminal 4CXXC-type zinc finger domain contributes to CpG …

Importance: Recent large infarct thrombectomy trials used heterogeneous imaging modalities and time windows for patient selection. Noncontrast computed tomographic (CT) scan is the most common stroke imaging approach. It remains uncertain whether thrombectomy is effective for patients with large infarcts identified using noncontrast CT alone within 24 hours of stroke onset.
Objective: To evaluate the effect of thrombectomy in patients with a large infarct on a noncontrast CT scan within 24 hours of onset.
Design, setting, and participants: Open-label, blinded-end point, bayesian-adaptive randomized trial with interim analyses for early stopping (futility or success) or population enrichment, which was conducted at …

Purpose: DEK::AFF2 fusion-associated squamous cell carcinoma (DEK::AFF2 SCC), also reported in the literature as low-grade papillary sinonasal (Schneiderian) carcinoma (LGPSC), is a rare, primarily bland-appearing, but locally aggressive neoplasm. Morphologically, these tumors can closely resemble sinonasal papilloma (SP), especially on small or limited biopsy, often leading to misdiagnosis. DEK::AFF2 SCC is devoid of the underlying mutually exclusive EGFR or KRAS driver mutations of SP, suggesting it may represent a distinct unique entity.
Methods: In this study, we conducted a retrospective search of "unusual" SP reported either as atypical, dysplastic, or suspicious for malignant transformation at our institution in the last …

Austronesian Maritime Migrations: Past And Present - A.B. Lapian Memorial Lecture 2024, James J. Fox
Antropologi Indonesia
This lecture is given in honour of A.B. Lapian whom I had the good fortunate to know. He was a notable scholar whose knowledge of the maritime world of Nusantara was exemplary. As an historian, he had a clear understanding of the broad contours of regional maritime history but equally, he had a concern for the illuminating details of that history. He had a special interest in the Bajau as a maritime population and in their crucial historical role in the trepang trade. I was fortunate to have participated in the International Seminar Professor Lapian organized on the Bajau in …

Importance Historically redlined neighborhoods may experience disinvestment, influencing their likelihood of gentrification, a process of neighborhood (re-)development that unequally distributes harms and benefits by race and class. Understanding the combined outcomes of redlining and gentrification informs how the mutually constitutive systems of structural racism and racial capitalism affect pregnancy outcomes. Objective To examine if historical redlining and contemporary gentrification is associated with increased severe maternal morbidity (SMM) odds. Design, Setting, and Participants This cross-sectional study used data from a statewide population-based sample of all live hospital births at 20 weeks’ gestation or more between 2005 and 2018 in California. Analysis …

Arousal and motivation interact to profoundly influence behavior. For example, experience tells us that we have some capacity to control our arousal when appropriately motivated, such as staying awake while driving a motor vehicle. However, little is known about how arousal and motivation jointly influence decision computations, including if and how animals, such as rodents, adapt their arousal state to their needs. Here, we developed and show results from an auditory, feature-based, sustained-attention task with intermittently shifting task utility. We use pupil size to estimate arousal across a wide range of states and apply tailored signal detection theoretic, hazard function …

Communities of color have been historically excluded and marginalized in the ongoing conversations about climate preparedness and resilience at local, national, and global levels. Using focus groups composed of Boston communities of color (Asian American, Black, Latino, and Native American), this study aimed to understand their perspectives on climate change, providing in-depth knowledge of its impact and their views on preparedness and resilience. Research shows that these communities have long been concerned about climate change and emphasize the urgent need to improve climate preparedness. A multi-pronged approach is crucial: listening to communities of color to leverage local knowledge and leadership, …
Comparing The Health Information Practices Of Sapphic People By Age Group And Generation, Vanessa Lynn Kitzie
Comparing The Health Information Practices Of Sapphic People By Age Group And Generation, Vanessa Lynn Kitzie
Faculty Publications
This qualitative research examines how sapphic people (i.e., umbrella term inclusive of lesbian, bisexual, and pansexual trans femmes, mascs, nonbinary people, and ciswomen) in South Carolina navigate informational barriers within healthcare systems. An information practices lens that examines how sapphic people create, seek, use, and share information to achieve desired healthcare outcomes describes such navigation. The research focuses on how intersectional identities, with a particular emphasis on age and considerations of race/ethnicity, geography, and gender, mediate these practices and their outcomes. The research uses participant data from semi-structured interviews and focus groups with 34 sapphic people about their health information …
Melanism In Polymorphic Terrestrial Snakes: A Meta-Analysis And Systematic Review, Ryan A. Martin
Melanism In Polymorphic Terrestrial Snakes: A Meta-Analysis And Systematic Review, Ryan A. Martin
Faculty Scholarship
Background and Aim: Colour polymorphic populations constitute excellent model systems for testing ecological and evolutionary hypotheses, as alternate colourations are associated with differences in various biological, behavioural and life-history traits. Melanism is the most common and most obvious form of polymorphism. In reptiles in general (and snakes in particular), thermal melanism has been a popular hypothesis used to explain the appearance of black individuals. It suggests that a trade-off exists between superior thermoregulation and reduced protection through the loss of crypsis. Surprisingly, despite the growing body of literature available, to date, there are only two qualitative reviews on the evolutionary …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021
The aim of this study was to assess the agreement of three different automated methods of identifying force-onset (40 N, 5 SDs, and 3 SDs) with manual identification, during the isometric mid-thigh pull (IMTP). Fourteen resistance-trained participants with > 6 months experience training with the power clean volunteered to take part. After three familiarisation sessions, the participants performed five maximal IMTPs separated by 1 min of rest. Fixed bias was found between 40 N and manual identification for time at force-onset. No proportional bias was present between manual identification and any automated threshold. Fixed bias between manual identification and automated was …

Artificial Intelligence, Copyright Registration, And The Rule Of Doubt, Thomas B. James
Artificial Intelligence, Copyright Registration, And The Rule Of Doubt, Thomas B. James
Texas A&M Law Review
Artificial intelligence (“AI”) technology has detonated an explosive burst of seemingly creative expression. Stories, images, music, and even entire books are now being generated very quickly. This development is a major headache for copyright registrars because the copyrightability of works created in this way is uncertain. The almost limitless variability in the extent of human involvement in the creation of a work using an AI tool compounds the uncertainty. In some cases, copyrightability is easy to determine, such as where an author only claims rights in the selection and arrangement of AI-generated output rather than the output itself. But in …

METHODS: In the summer of 2023, two semi-structured interviews and six focus groups were conducted with twenty-one stakeholders at a Texas natural gas construction …
Group Dynamics, Gender, And Field : An Ethnographic Study Of The Yo-Yoing Sport Subculture In Hong Kong, Ho Wang Kwong
Group Dynamics, Gender, And Field : An Ethnographic Study Of The Yo-Yoing Sport Subculture In Hong Kong, Ho Wang Kwong
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
This research explores the yo-yoing sport subculture in Hong Kong, tracing its evolution from a popular pastime to a recognized sport with a global competition structure led by the International Yo-Yo Federation. By situating yo-yoing within lifestyle sports literature, this study offers a sociological understanding of yo-yo players’ experiences and challenges in Hong Kong. Yo-yoing is an interesting case to study because of its prevailing label as a toy hobby, thus players are generally positive to mainstreaming which differs from many lifestyle sports participants’ reluctant attitude. The central question of this study is: How does a subculture gain legitimation as …
