Trouble Bruen For Assault Weapon Bans: A Feature-Based Analysis Of The Second Amendment, Samuel R. Vasilopulos

Northern Illinois University Law Review

“Assault weapons” and “large-capacity magazines” have been the target of recent legislation, such as the Protect Illinois Communities Act. Weapons bans of this nature have traditionally been upheld by the lower courts; however, the U.S. Supreme Court has refined the test for constitutionality under the Second Amendment in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc. v. Bruen (2022). Bruen has laid out a two-step test in which the first step asks whether the conduct, namely the possession of a specifically banned arm, is within the scope of the plain text of the Second Amendment. To determine whether an arm …

Client Confidentiality As Data Security, Jonah E. Perlin Oct 2024

Client Confidentiality As Data Security, Jonah E. Perlin

Washington Law Review

The duty of confidentiality has been a cornerstone of the attorney-client relationship for more than four centuries. Historically, this duty was not difficult to discharge. All a lawyer had to do to comply was not affirmatively share client information in public without consent. But that has all changed. The same technologies that provide unprecedented benefits of authorized access by lawyers and their clients create unprecedented risks of unauthorized access by others. As a result, although the duty of confidentiality was once synonymous with a duty to keep client confidences secret, today the duty necessitates that lawyers keep client confidences secure …

Impact Of Industrial Park Platforms On Sme Financing: Evidence From The Ld Park, Zhendong Liu

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are essential to the Chinese economy. However, when seeking financing, SMEs often face stricter financing conditions and higher financing costs due to information asymmetry in the market, commonly referred to as the problem of “difficult and expensive financing.” This issue severely limits the growth potential of SMEs. This study explores the positive role that industrial parks play as a bridge between banks and SMEs in alleviating the “difficult and expensive financing” problem. The study surveyed 54 industrial parks and collected 268 valid questionnaires from banks, industrial parks, and SMEs. The data analysis yielded the following …

Quantum Many-Body Scars From Unstable Periodic Orbits, Bertrand Evrard, Andrea Pizzi, Simeon I. Mistakidis, Ceren B. Dag

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Unstable periodic orbits (UPOs) play a key role in the theory of chaos, constituting the "skeleton" of classical chaotic systems and "scarring" the eigenstates of the corresponding quantum system. Recently, nonthermal many-body eigenstates embedded in an otherwise thermal spectrum have been identified as a many-body generalization of quantum scars. The latter, however, are not clearly associated to a chaotic phase space, and the connection between the single- and many-body notions of quantum scars remains therefore incomplete. Here, we find the first quantum many-body scars originating from UPOs of a chaotic phase space. Remarkably, these states verify the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis, …

The Evolution Of The Translations Of Virgil’S “The Aeneid”: An Analytical Comparison Of Robert Faglesand John Dryden's Translations Using Sentiment Analysis And Topic Modeling, Eric Zhang, Katherine Elkins Oct 2024

The Evolution Of The Translations Of Virgil’S “The Aeneid”: An Analytical Comparison Of Robert Faglesand John Dryden's Translations Using Sentiment Analysis And Topic Modeling, Eric Zhang, Katherine Elkins

IPHS 200: Programming Humanity

This research poster aims to explore two English translations of the ancient Roman epic “The Aeneid” written by the poet Virgil. The two versions that were chosen for analysis are John Dryden’s translation from 1697 compared with Robert Fagles’ translation from 2006. This poster seeks to use sentiment analysis and word frequency analysis tools to analytically compare the two versions of the epic. From the results, the older translation appeared to use more formal wording and “dramatic” storytelling structures compared to a more “accurate” rendition of the epic translated using modern language. The sentiment analysis result also demonstrates greater sentiment …

What Makes An Emotionally Compelling Novel? A Sentiment Analysis Of Science Fiction Novels 1984 And We, Annalia Fiore, Katherine Elkins

IPHS 200: Programming Humanity

The purpose of this project is to compare the Soviet novel We by Yevgeny Zamyatin (1924) to the English novel 1984 by George Orwell (1949). Many have previously drawn comparisons between the two works, but the focus of this research is to find dissimilarities in their respective emotional arcs using sentiment analysis, a computational tool used for processing large bodies of text. The findings of this research were twofold. Firstly, the novel We suffers from an undeveloped emotional arc due to a weak narrative voice and a lack of emotionally varied events. This is especially notable when compared to 1984, …

Through the use of trauma-informed teaching strategies, teachers are able to better assist students in coping with their past or current traumas and understand that their behavior may be a result of their experiences. Trauma-informed teaching provides an abundance of benefits for both students and educators when implemented with fidelity. With these important research findings in mind, this school improvement plan was created to administer system-wide trauma-informed teaching training and strategies to support students who …

Increasing Student Achievement Through Departmentalization, Braxton Williams Oct 2024

Increasing Student Achievement Through Departmentalization, Braxton Williams

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

Classroom configuration and models of instruction have traditionally been self-contained classrooms with whole-group instruction. This traditional method of teaching is being challenged by recent research showing that small group targeted instruction is more beneficial for student outcomes as well as research showing that a departmentalized classroom configuration is more advantageous for teachers and students than self-contained models. This school improvement plan presents data while addressing the challenges of implementing a departmentalized system for Nixon Elementary in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
